Basically Seymour’s guardian was his mum and together they went to Zanarkand to retrieve the final aeon, to beat Sin. But going by the dialogues, they knew, at least the mother knew that unlike every other aeons, to get the final aeon, the guardian, in this case the mother would have to give up her body.

The mother, since her marriage with Seymour’s dad was always subjected to harsh life and abuse and basically racism from Guados (Seymour’s dad’s race). But she stayed and did all she could out of love.

In the end she sacrifices herself to become the aeon and I think after the process Seymour, being a child, just runs. But watching how his mother just dies and learning the story of the endless cycle of Sin makes him go nihilistic in a way and he too wishes to further fuel the cycle, by becoming one with Sin. But yeah basically the mother, becomes the final aeon known as Anima. The name is a reference to the fact that while all aeons are souls, summoners usually get them by praying, the aeons are already aeons. But the final aeon requires a new sacrifice each time. The whole deal with anima and pain is basically a picture of the mother’s whole life, till her death being an endless mess of pain and suffering and even her sacrifice was in vain as her son basically went batshit crazy, became a power hungry murderer. It’s a sad story, sadder when you see how she became the primal, watching young Seymour and her and all
