I thought that you unlock a new class by equipping a weapon from it but I bought a Thaumaturge staff and tried an Arcanist grimore but I can't equip either because I haven't unlocked the class. All current melee positionals are chained as part of a combo sequence. Monk used to have positionals with all its attacks, but most of those got removed because it was clunky. So using a positional-attack as an opening strike robs you of the majority of its intended power due to using it out of sequence.

Beyond that, what Wynne said about overworld mobs is right. Overworld mobs are also designed to be fairly easily killable for much that reason; if you're fighting a single enemy, it's always technically facing you, so the only way you can "hit" your positionals would be to use True North, which allows you to ignore positional requirements for a short period.

if you can handle things being smaller, turn it down
