You basically “meld” materia to the scroll with a 100% success chance that goes down with repeated successes, which resets once you meld enough to need to meld the next grade
Each materia is 1 point of stat
Depending on materia prices for your datacenter, your best option is to usually meld 5 of the cheapest combat stats with grade 1’s and 2’s
Maybe grade 3’s for some stats if they’re cheaper than grade 2’a for other stats

As they've started implementing duty support/trust's to help the player-base experience the game without human interaction. Will they be working on a queue system where once Heavensward/Stormblood have their own NPC/AI's to work with, they'll eventually make queue times 5 minutes at max then proceed to fill in those leftover spots with bots in their position? Just a question I wanted to ask since it'd be fun to play the game with your friend but not have a full party and queue as 2x DPS without waiting too long. ^~^

i usually recommend 1 combat, 1 botanist or miner
so you have a minimum variety of things you may want
it entirely depends on what you're intending to craft later on but i find combat most useful since i can't be asked to go grind mob drops manually
else i'd have to buy them for crafting and that's additional overhead

it is recommended to look up the steps early and see what materials you can buy
middle merchant in the central building in Idyllshire, and the stand up the hill path in Mor Dhona both have a '(Special Arms)' tab you can purchase these materials from
you will need a LOT of poetics if you're going in blind and don't have any resources so I would also suggest getting poetic grinding down to a science

Not all materials are available until you reach a certain point in the questline

I personally did a bunch of Eureka for mine but if you're not in a rush, doing daily roulettes is nice
and yeah Kat brings up a good point, not all mats will be available but most will
If they aren't there then you'll need to proceed
My final piece of advice is to get comfortable with doing stuff unsync if you haven't before but a 90 class dumpsters every necessary unsync for 60
