Early levels are done by doing your crafting log. Just crafting items you haven't crafted before. Then at 20 you can do Ishgard Restoration, I'm pretty sure. That works all the way up to level 80, and then from 80-90 you can do levequests and Grand Company turnins.
I know that's a lot of info, but just google search some of those terms and you'll find plenty of info about it

For using controller, I only put the actions in L2, R2, L2->R2 and R2->L2, I never put them in R2->R2 , L2->L2 because it' takes more time (for me) to double press the same shoulder button while doing my rotation, but there I keep stuff like food, sprint and non battle stuff (teleport, mount, etc).

you can do fates or hunts but they're really not that efficient at all
