No. You get a compass that detects aether currents, and have to collect 5 overworld currents and do a few that reward more currents.

For flying in ARR zones, there's nothing to collect. You only have to finish the level 50 MSQ called The Ultimate Weapon. For expansions, you'll have to collect aether currents.
