How do I unlock melding?

Complete Forging the Spirit (materia extract/npc melding) and Waking the Spirit (player melding) in Central Thanalan.

How can I get my gear melded?

To meld visible Materia slots a NPC melder in any major city will do (marked with a Blue Materia icon on the map). To overmeld gear you'll need to request another player to meld your gear or to do it yourself.

Why can't I meld this Materia to my stuff?

Every Tier of Materia has a minimum item level requirement that gear must meet to allow melding of that Tier. Tier 6 Materia requires an item level of 290 while Tiers 7 and 8 require an item level of 420.

Why is my meld giving +0 stats?

Every item has a maximum amount of stats that can be given through melding and the natural stats found on the gear. This can be seen at the bottom of the Materia Melding menu, as seen in the picture below.

The secondary stat with a higher number is already at the cap and cannot be further melded.

EXP in potd really drops off at around 55. You can do it til 60 if you want to go braindead like I did though. Heaven on High is the 'upgrade' to PotD that is good for leveling 61-70, and similarly drops off at around 66, but again - you can keep doing it.

to clarify I say I went braindead because I leveled up almost all of the classes from 1-60 in PotD aside from the ones I took through MSQ.

But now people have other more popular places to go like the Ivalice raids unlocked, so its not as common to end up in the CT raids.

Reci Succor vs Reci Spreadlo

Note: Exact potencies when using Recitation are based on your own crit stat. Assume M is your own crit multiplier and plug it in if you want more precise numbers for your own gear. Every potency in the faq will include an M multiplier so the exact stat doesn't affect the comparison.

In AoE healing situations Recitation Succor provides a 180(M) potency heal and 225(M) potency shield (405(M) total potency) to each party member. In contrast, Recitation Spreadlo provides a 375(M) potency shield to each party member and a 300(M) potency heal and 750(M) potency shield (1050(M) total potency) to your primary target.

As you can see Reci Succor provides more total potency to all party members but the primary target, assuming the heal is not wasted. Beyond this, Reci Succor requires only an oGCD (Reci) followed by a GCD (Succ), while Reci Spreadlo requires an oGCD (Reci) followed by a GCD (Adlo) followed by another oGCD (Deploy). The biggest advantage of Reci Spreadlo is that it puts all of its potency (excluding the heal on the primary target) into shield, meaning you can go into a mechanic with more effective max hp, or use it in times when Succor would overheal such as during downtime.

Remember that using Recitation on uptime GCDs is generally going to be suboptimal. It's main usage will come during prog to conserve mana and give larger safety shields, but this is still very situational.
