You could start leveling them now but I wouldn't get too far into it. I'd probably stop when the items you need for crafting gets really hard to get (vendors stop selling it) because that's kinda when you want the marketboard and retainers. Also doesn't help your inventory will be a mess by then

Your first few class quests give a fuck ton of shards so I'd do all of those for each class. If you have a house you can garden with. Planting and growing shard seeds is pretty good too

Otherwise I'd honestly just buy them from marketboard because grinding them out gathering style is a massive pain in the ass

'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts. The first rank comes from completing specific quests in the main scenario quests, with the second rank coming from Riding Maps which are bought with either Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, or Bicolor Gemstones. Mount Speed Boosts do not increase the flying speed of mounts.
