I don’t quite understand how the Esprit gauge works. It says “increases when you or your dance partner execute a weaponskill or a spell.” Yet I swear I’ve seen the samurai do their attacks while I gain nothing. Is it at a % chance?

the % chance is lower with classes who have a faster GCD so it's roughly equal between all jobs

the only one you shouldn't buff is SMN since their pet doesnt recieve the dance partner standard step buff

'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts. The first rank comes from completing specific quests in the main scenario quests, with the second rank coming from Riding Maps which are bought with either Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, or Bicolor Gemstones. Mount Speed Boosts do not increase the flying speed of mounts.
