Just depends what you are personally looking for in an FC.
A bigger FC might have more events, more groups going, and a more active chat but also has the potential for more disagreements due to more people, more drama, and more cliques forming.
A smaller FC may have less events than a bigger one, but also is just one clique (the 10 or so of you or whatever) so might feel more like a family or tribe that you belong to.

piggybacking on that, a larger FC is also more likely to feel the exact opposite of a family you belong to
not all of them are like that, but in larger FCs there's a larger likelihood you end up being a number

It also depends if you are looking for an FC with a very specific intent (rp, maps, leveling, just social, etc). The more specific you make your search, the better chance you find an FC that molds well to how you play FF14.
Also, there is nothing wrong with wanting to be in a large FC. Some people want something to do 24/7 and you aren't going to get that in a smaller FC.

the best way to progress on your gear, should be focusing on the the Tomestones of Revelation, and gaeting a new piece each week.
