modest moss
#

yeah ram was better when it didn't have dumb gamer rgb heatsinks

kindred brook
#

how does those RGB heatspreaders work anyway

#

is there like some sort of electrical connection

#

between the memory

#

and the headspreader

#

wouldn't that make it hotter?

potent arrow
#

No

#

LEDs barely emit heat

#

It's just taking 12vs from the slot throught the card

#

And the heatspreader has diffusers that bring the light from the LEDs to the top of the spreaders

#

That's all

kindred brook
#

O I see

#

when did rgb plastics

#

become such mainstream lol

#

was there a leap in tech

#

that made it possible?

potent arrow
#

? Diffusers existed forever

#

Its just a piece of plastic that basically reflects the light outwards

#

It's like those plastic ones you see on shop lamps but alot more directed

kindred brook
#

I mean; I am seeing those weird plastic LED lamps and junk too now

#

before it used to be glass

potent arrow
#

Glass would need to be frosted or texture to diffuse, so probably cheaper

umbral moss
#

but you can injection mold plastic into much thinner shapes so you don't use as much of it for a similarly robust product

#

and you can make diffuser-type glass without surface grinding as well, it's just that fluorites tend to be brittle as shit and are very hygroscopic

#

it's a big waste to take a super polished glass surface and put a 60 grit finish on it post-manufacturing

kindred brook
#

I just think in the last decade? or so

#

LED plastic lamps

#

became quite popular

#

and mainstream

umbral moss
#

that's because LEDs are cheap as shit these days thanks to slave labor happy chinese employees

#

you can get 20W LED modules for like $35 shipped

#

and the color purity on them is remarkably good if you get a four-chip package

potent arrow
#

Cob LEDs are also a fucking god send for random garbage

umbral moss
#

ye

#

no more SMD bullshit

#

you can get way more power density out of them when the LED is directly on the substrate

potent arrow
#

Yep

#

And practically any shape for any application

umbral moss
#

too bad you can't get COB mechanical keyboard PCBs

#

unless....?

kindred brook
#

cob

#

smd?

#

what

#

Pcb

#

PCB = board?

umbral moss
#

LED used to be discrete surface mount devices that got soldered to the PCB, which limited how much power they could handle because of heatsinking and trace widths

#

chip on board designs are closer to how CPUs are designed where the LED is mounted to its own substrate and you supply power directly

kindred brook
#

😮

#

I did that in my electronic class

#

I remember that

umbral moss
#

those are probably through hole diodes

kindred brook
umbral moss
#

SMD diodes are teeny and usually BGA or QFP pinouts meant for you to assemble with a soldering oven and a pick/place machine

#

think the tiny resistors you see on a GPU board

#

those are SMD

kindred brook
#

holy crap is there microscopic resistors too?

are we fucked lol

potent arrow

potent arrow
umbral moss

that's why solder is made the way it is lmao

potent arrow

Lmao

umbral moss
#

tin-lead alloys mad easy to melt

well, intentionally melt, galium alloys melt more easily but they also melt under a stern glare too

kindred brook

what is solder anyway

dull garnet

umbral moss

dull garnet

the good stuff is leaded

#

lead free sucks

umbral moss
#

even lead-free solder is some horrible shit like tin-antimony or tin-indium

potent arrow
#

Tin whiskers mannnnn

kindred brook
#

ah tin is a good binding agent

#

for electronic boards

umbral moss
#

tin is the bulk material because it melts very easily

kindred brook
#

I see I see

potent arrow
umbral moss
#

you wouldn't want to make solder out of like, platinum or gold

dull garnet
#

60% tin, 40% lead is what i use

umbral moss
#

it's fucking miserable to try to melt those metals

dull garnet
#

some of em have like 1% silver

kindred brook
#

gold is the best conductor

umbral moss
#

no

kindred brook
#

of electricity though right

#

no?

#

o.o

umbral moss
#

gold is worse than silver or copper

potent arrow
dull garnet
umbral moss
#

gold's special property is that it has extremely high corrosion resistance, unlike silver and copper

kindred brook
#

why do we put gold in our boards?

potent arrow
kindred brook
#

ah

dull garnet
#

shh

potent arrow
#

I feel like lead free wrecks less of my soldering tips lol

dull garnet
#

probably

umbral moss
#

gold is desirable in electronics when you don't want to deal with moisture or electronegative degradation

potent arrow
#

I don't know if it's scientifically true

kindred brook
#

I had a terrible soldering iron and ruined a saturn I bought at a pawn shop

potent arrow
#

But it sure feels like I'm fucking less tips now

umbral moss
#

since gold is pretty close to perfectly inert under most circumstances

kindred brook
#

trying to put a mod chip on it

#

back in the day lol

dull garnet
#

saturn are so easy to mod

potent arrow
#

I still need to work on my deaoldering technique

kindred brook
#

Yeah

dull garnet

i need to get a hot air station

kindred brook

potent arrow

Even with a got air station smd is a bitch

potent arrow

I just use my soldering tweezers

umbral moss
#

I kind of want to print a new dreamcast chassis and put a teeny PC in there

potent arrow
#

Hot air is for BGA chips

kindred brook
#

new age mods are pretty cray now

#

you can just replace

umbral moss
#

I don't think you'll ever be able to get a high performance PC in that footprint anymore 😔

kindred brook

dull garnet

i have done that to my saturn and ps1

kindred brook

kindred brook

yeah

dull garnet

potent arrow

I mean for the footprint it's fine

#

If you want an overkill nucc those skull ones are more then fine

umbral moss

you're not going to be putting out like, xboner XXXX performance from a dreamcast volume

dull garnet

beyond modchips not really, you can just run PS2 games via OPL/HDD with softmods though

kindred brook

umbral moss

I thought gdemu died because the guy couldn't afford to make them anymore

dull garnet

gdemu is heavily cloned

the dev makes a batch like once a year so

kindred brook

I wonder why

those were only made

umbral moss
#

are the clones any good or are you just rolling the dice that it won't shit the bed and take your board with you

or some shit

"Weather is getting good"

dull garnet

clones are largely okay but you can't update them

kindred brook

there's also the mode from terraonion which is mega expensive but allows you to load roms via usb, micro sd or sata drive

that can be used with saturn, dreamcast and ps1

Who else other than Altera makes FPGA chips

#

Xilinx, Inc. ( ZY-links) is an American technology company that is primarily a supplier of programmable logic devices. The company invented the field-programmable gate array (FPGA). It is the semiconductor company that created the first fabless manufacturing model.Co-founded by Ross Freeman, Bernard Vonderschmitt, and James V Barnett II in 1984,...

#

Oh they do too

#

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrix let’s bring back Cyrix

Cyrix Corporation was a microprocessor developer that was founded in 1988 in Richardson, Texas, as a specialist supplier of floating point units for 286 and 386 microprocessors. The company was founded by Tom Brightman and Jerry Rogers.
In 1992, Cyrix introduced its own i386 compatible processors, the 486SLC and 486DLC. These were higher perform...

what does AMD want to do with xilinx tech?

do they want to take something like ultrascale and combine it with a ryzen APU instead?

that tbh feels kinda backwards

I am under the impression ryzen APUs are more efficient than intel's alternative, but both are still a lot less efficient than ARM SoCs

is it actually overheating?

it is more than likely within spec, gddr6x runs hot there's probably no need to mess with it as you could wind up making things worse

lower the clock speed of the memory if it's a big concern, there's really not much you can do to guarantee you'll get lower temps

it's a known thing for the memory chips to run hot so much so that they brought back active backplates for the 3090 so your best bet would be to watercool it if you really want to drop temps

@deep sapphire and any other #technology-discussionbros who know about cars, our car is being driven less since the pandemic and a few times it has had a flat battery and we've needed a dude to come start it... apparently it still has the original battery in it, if I replace the battery how much better will it hold a charge? the guy told my wife some shit about needing to drive a minimum of 7 miles per start, would a new battery mitigate that?

It's super simple so that sounds about right

modest moss

they even do a thing where they save the settings on the radio, and we've used them before for stuff when another guy tried to rip us off

I could probably do it myself if I watched a yt video but eh, £7 for peace of mind is good value I reckon

#

My friend has a 2003 HD with a 6.6 duramax the thing has 400,000 miles on it

modest moss
#

I bet I need a socket thingy to change a battery

deep sapphire
#

It’s usually 2 small bolts on the terminals that clamp it to the posts and then on the battery plate there is usually a small retaining bracket to hold the battery in place. Probably a 10mm. I’d use a wrench instead

#

Depending if the clamps are the side post ones or the top post you might need 2 wrenches, one to hold the bolt and the nut or it’ll just spin freely

#

Most places that sell batteries will install it for you for free though

modest moss
#

a place with fitting want £100, can buy just the part for a little over 50 it looks like

deep sapphire
#

Sucks you don’t have Walmart, they have surprisingly good batteries for cheap

#

Same with oil

#

Same company that supplies a lot of the name brand batteries makes the Walmart brand ones too and they are considerably cheaper and I can vouch for them

modest moss
#

welp just looked at it, there's some other cover thing over the bracket thing and it looks like the bolts holding it in are jank and at an angle where I won't have the right tool, or it'll be fiddly af

expect Hank and Sarah would be like NP and have it done in 5 minutes though

Most of the time, the PC speaker is regarded with derision. It was never intended to play anything but simple, utilitarian signal "beeps" like you hear at the post screen on boot. It was ...
