i have decided to build my game pc into my server rack

but i dont know how to approach it

that sounds like a neat idea

for general image-editing stuff, do y'all prefer Krita or GIMP?

never used krita and i dislike gimp deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp

yeah, clip studio has a trial though if you want to try it and see if it's worth it deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp

and it's 3 months long Pog

It's really not much different than building a tower. Just get a rack mount that's has enough U to put your components in at can accommodate a conventional PC build. The biggest difference is the cable runs after that you have to watch out for as longer distances introduce more likelyhood of problems.

pseudo frigate
#

just wanna fit it in 1 place

#

Hello. Sorry for long msg
So I'd like to add a 6th fan to my PC, a friend helped me buy/ build my PC but he has a lot going on rn so I'd like to not bug him. I believe my fan hub can only hold 5 so I need to buy another to add more fans. Idk what exactly I need, I'm not a tech guy lol. I have the link to the fans set I used if any1 can help.

pseudo frigate
#

not really

#

xD

#

i need to fit my AIO in there tho

#

which is gonna be a pain

#

360mm radiator...

#

it technicalkly fits a 240mm but it would be bumping against my powersupply

untold onyx
#

Well unless you're going to need the drive bay populated you can just pull out one of the middle fans and run through there while mounting the rad assembly on the front.

pseudo frigate
#

nah im not gonna use the drive bays

#

i dont think the cable of my aio is long enough to reach to the front of the case tho

untold onyx
#

Though I would say if you're going to push for liquid cooling then it might be wise to change over to a custom loop.

pseudo frigate
#

but ye ima replace the front fans with noctuafans anyways

#

so might as well replace the aio for a good fan cooler then

pseudo frigate
#

but ye best to custom loop

lavish vortex
hard drift
#

yeah

lavish vortex
#

OK I got lots. I just need plug it in just that or is another cable for power supply too?

hard drift

just that

lavish vortex
#

Oh that's a lot easier than I thought

hard drift
#

make sure the fan is the correct orientation you want though deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp

probably the hardest part lol

which doesn't mean much since it's easy

lavish vortex

Blowing air out

hard drift

just make sure you have the fan facing the right way then deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp

#

each fan is different, some will have arrows to indicate airflow

lavish vortex
#

Ah lol ok

pseudo frigate
#

euh ngl

#

you can use any fan

#

if it says cpu fan it really doesnt care

#

xD

#

most motherboards allow you to change the funcitonality in the settings

lavish vortex
#

Ik I need a smaller one than the sets I have. I just didn't know how this stuff connects and everything lol. I wanted a bigger case but it was sold out

latent grotto

I have 7 fans oldriskyDerp

9 if I include the cpu fans ponderpaissa

lavish vortex

I have 5 for my case, 2 on my aio cpu cooler, if I could've got the bigger case I would've had 10

untold onyx
#

A good general rule of thumb is the label side is the intake and the spec detail side is the exhaust. Won't be that way in every situation, but for most it works.

latent grotto
#

You can also look at the way the fan blades curve

#

If they're curved towards you then they're blowing towards you

latent grotto
#

If they curve away they blow away

dull garnet
#

they blow out the grille side

lavish vortex

modest moss

are your temps a problem?

are you fixing a problem that doesn't exist?

dull garnet

why do people have so many fans

#

i'll never understand

Not that I know of, yes fixing a problem that doesn't exist

modest moss

AIO and 5 case fans sounds like plenty to me

dull garnet
#

5 case fans is ridiculous

untold onyx

modest moss

odd sand
#

One of the rare cases where a console has a tech edge over PC

#

That doesn't stop people from spending double on a PCIE 4.0 SSD for that sweet 0.3 sec faster load time though. namazuconcern

umbral moss
#

the NV2A in the original xbox had some special alpha-channel culling feature that made emulating OG xbox games on x86 hardware pretty fuckin difficult

#

even though the xbrick was ostensibly just a shitty celeron and a Ti4200

#

the "scene dump" thing you described probably won't be leveraged by developers in console games until much later anyway, that seems like something that requires a lot of additional programming even if it's a console exclusive feature

odd sand
#

Yeah, I was going to say that even then, it's a feature only a handful of well-funded AAA developers are likely to even do.

#

Even if the PS5 nags you, I can almost guarantee the 3500 speed drives will be fine for any PS5 titles you would try to run on it

#

I think it was Linus Tech Tips that did a test, and the only thing that would auto-fail a drive was not being PCIE4.0 I think. The speed test would give a warning, but not outright be rejected.

umbral moss
#

not going to catch capcom or square-enix modifying their engines to use this new feature

#

unless unreal engine incorporates it

odd sand
#

At least until it's something that's automagically baked into the engine for like Unreal 6.0 or 7.0 or something.

#

jinx

umbral moss
#

well, capcom makes their own engine

#

so there's little to no chance of RE engine being modified to use some new jazz that only the PS5 can use right now

odd sand
#

Kinda like we're finally seeing more broad multicore adoption in games, but that's almost certainly bc unreal or unity started including a multithread scheduler or something into the engine to spin things off to helper threads

umbral moss
#

yeah

#

it mostly helps that unreal engine's widespread penetration into the market has kind of forced even in-house engine developers to add those functions

#

hhmmm yet again the GM EV1 came up on reddit. It's funny, I hear about that fuck up about as much as the Ford Pinto fuckup, and GM only made 1,000-ish EV1s. Whoever thought "we should just recall the leased carss and crush them, so we can save money since it's not profitable and we don't want to support them with parts and service" didn't realize it'd produce decades of bad will hahaha.

umbral moss
#

that sounds like GM to me

sly elk
#

then again we're talking about the company that made their flagship car in china and somehow ran Hummer out of business

umbral moss
#

"let's save pennies now and get deep fucked later"

sly elk
#

and then there's the whole corvette thing

#

nothing wrong about the car itself, but the toxic sales practices and they only make like 10 of them a year lol

umbral moss
sly elk
#

I would imagine they'd make those in china too, if they could save $0.50 a car

#

ah yes

umbral moss
#

and when ford got shit on for the pinto they quietly retired the GM version

sly elk
#

the vega?

umbral moss
#

wasn't the vega a bigger car?

sly elk
#

I forgot about that. wasn't that GM's exercise in cost cutting?

umbral moss
#

GM's exercise in cost cutting is ever-present

sly elk
#

they made special train cars to ship them vertically because they realized they could save some $$ on shipping costs lmao

umbral moss
#

every fuckup in GM's history has been "I'm trying to save some pennies"

Can someone help me with the sound quality issue? I've been trying to fix it, but It still cracks when I use an ability on sage. Or any skill for that matter.

#

I've tried to change the audio equalizer, changed to DX9 which kind of helps but not entirely, as the issue just arises again. I've changed my headset over to speakers, still didn't work. I've looked into processes, nothing suspicious that I can find. I don't want to redownload the ENTIRE game just to fix this, but at this point, that's my only option I can think of.

I hate it when windows can't decide which way my trackpad is scrolling

Looks like a lot of other people are experiencing sound quality issues as well... So it will be taken on board for sure. Wish it would get resolved, but it seems like it's a difficult problem to pin down.

sly elk
#

hmmm i bet that's a rigol 1000z

#

i wonderw what the thing next to it is

#

nooo

#

oh ok

#

never seen one like that before

#

never seen one like that before though 😄

#

i realize that sounds silly

#

the ones I'm used to seeing are the long ones made by hp/agilent

#

like these

#

or your standard yellow fluke or one of its many clones

#

the one in that picture looks like a hybrid between the two designs

#

aye the only places I've been that had them were in the college EE labs

#

and at work

#

and like

#

i see plenty of cheap power supplies but yea xD

#

the cheapest scope at work is one of those rigols someone has on a test bench they use for playing with random prototypes and I haven't seen it used in ages

#

most of them cost more than a car

#

and my job is to write software so if I'm messing with one of those then we're having a really really bad no good day

#

though if I'm in the lab it's already not a great day

#

the novelty of that kinda balances it out

#

it's a real mixed bag

#

i'd rather the software bug be found and solved at my desk in a sim, or at least on a bench by my desk

umbral moss
#

rigol? yeah

#

they're decent considering the price but they have fairly strict requirements about using a time-synchronized trigger scheme

sly elk
#

dangit

#

I decided to try a magnesium supplement i had laying around and then wanted to take a heartburn tablet

#

... realized the heartburn tablet has lots of magnesium in it

umbral moss
#

if you try to self-reference with a rolling trigger rigol scopes do weird things depending on the time scale so it's not really ideal to use rolling trig

sly elk
#

aw that sucks

#

I think sarah was talking about the DMM on the desk?

umbral moss
#

never tried a rigol DMM

#

fluke is DA STANNARD but amprobe is like, OK

#

I have an amprobe at work that's over 10 years old, still a champion even though it doesn't have a hall effect sensor for current measurements

sly elk
#

if ya noticed, I was noting that I'd never seen a DMM like the one in the picture lol

#

all I've ever seen are the portable flukes and their copycats, and the oldschool pizza box HPs

#

the most disturbing fact is I don't personally own a DMM

#

i've never gotten to use one of those 😦

#

I have used a tek a few times

umbral moss
#

honestly, you should always use a reference trigger and not rolling

#

but rigol's case is that it draws from the delay flag position and refreshes after 100% of the draw window buffer is full

#

so it doesn't scroll right to left and let you see stuff in real time

#

at the end of the day you're paying like $3k for a four channel high bandwidth scope, what did you think was going to happen

#

it's not a tektronix

sly elk
#

3k?!

#

isn't that a bit much for a rigol?

#

oh, high bandwidth

umbral moss
#

not for the high refresh rate and high bandwidth ones

#

the top-end one is like $8k or something

#

I got a decent frequency sensing one for like $60

Looking at a tracert for primal servers

 10 26 ms 27 ms 27 ms ae-4.r00.scrmca02.us.bb.gin.ntt.net [129.250.7.57]
 11 31 ms 30 ms 40 ms xe-0-1-0-1-1.r00.scrmca02.us.ce.gin.ntt.net [192.80.16.2]
 12 26 ms 30 ms 28 ms 204.2.229.230
 13 27 ms 28 ms 28 ms 204.2.229.10

Those are the last 4 nodes in the route. Does SE own the FFXIV servers or are they managed and operated by NTT America (owner of the 204.2.229 IP range)?

#

Well more of is 204.2.229.230 a DC or a CDN?

deep sapphire
#

SE only has a contract with them

boreal surge
#

Interesting. So from what I'm seeing (did a tracert for Elemental) basically SE owns their japanese servers but contracts their US ones. To a company that also happens to be japanese.

modest moss
#

I would assume SE own the hardware and rent space in NTT's DCs

deep sapphire
#

yeah, and we all heavily criticized the decision

#

its illogical to me they would move the data center from the far east to the far west

modest moss
#

they recently talked about trying to buy more hardware iirc

deep sapphire
#

on top of going with someone more reputable, NTT was probably only chosen because it being japanese lol

#

if you're only gonna have one data center per region

#

you should make it in a centralized area

#

they should've chosen chicago or kansas city

boreal surge
deep sapphire
#

exactly

#

but it is better than the old DC

boreal surge
#

Which tbh, idk which end of the US FFXIV is skewed towards.

deep sapphire
#

the Quebec DC was so bad they had emergency maintenance almost weekly

#

on top of Level 3 and Comcast having a bitch fest over routes

boreal surge
#

L3 and Comcast is nothing they can do about.

deep sapphire
#

at the least it should've stayed in the east, thats where a majority of the population lives

boreal surge
deep sapphire
#

there are plenty of networking fields and data centers along the east

#

north virginia is one of the biggest networking hubs

boreal surge
#

True.

#

But we frankly don't know what factors goes in their heads when deciding where to put a DC.

deep sapphire
#

I just think they were familiar with dealing with NTT obviously being a japanese company

#

but I dont think NTT is a very good host

#

their node before it reaches WAN is dog shit

boreal surge
#

But with their going international strategy (or i might be mistaken from another company) It would make sense for the to consider owning a full blown DC, land and design and all.

#

At least one a continent.

deep sapphire
#

or contract out with a larger cloud provider like amazon or microsoft

boreal surge
#

Well like it or not NTT is international, and it's an L1 provider apparently.

deep sapphire
#

that way they can scale operations easier

#

im aware of NTT being big

boreal surge
#

Yadda yadda cloud is not the solution to everything yadda yadda data consistency.

deep sapphire
#

but that doesnt excuse it being poorly implemented

#

but with anything networking

#

its subjective

boreal surge
#

Yup.

deep sapphire
#

im not a CCNP lol

boreal surge
deep sapphire
#

I've run winMTR and sharkwire

#

and the same node always drops packets

boreal surge
#

Also I'm assuming the 204.2.229.230 node is the dogshit one?

deep sapphire
#

I would have to look, dont recall exactly the ip

#

yeah .230

#

which im assuming is either the outside wan address or the node before it

boreal surge
#

Well I know 10 in that list i posted is the end of their network in sacramento

deep sapphire
#

yeah thats where the DC is located

#

I feel like its a combination of factors

#

the net code in ffxiv (and if I have to be honest a lot of japanese games) isnt great

#

and I think it doesnt handle syn-ack exchanges particularly well

#

its pretty picky on the quality of the network traffic

#

I use to have issues with some modems where the game would just up and DC out of no where

#

others it would DC when transitioning to the duty server

#

just really weird issues

#

this is also evident with the whole 2002 issue

#

for some they never get it, others they get it constantly

#

thats inexcusable

boreal surge
#

I wonder if there are any other L1 companies available in Japan.

deep sapphire
#

hard to say, NTT is pretty massive there

#

I suppose softbank probably

umbral moss
#

I miss the quebec servers though

#

if you had the ticks right you could land a weaponskill during the jump anim lock

#

now it doesn't work because the latency is too high

deep sapphire
#

I hated them, every tuesday was a shit show and they constantly had to go down for maintenance lol

#

so many times we had to call raid early because it was so laggy

boreal surge
#

Ok so all NA servers are at sacramento, which tbh that is big dumb.

deep sapphire
#

its ridiculously dumb

#

but overall it has been more stable than montreal

boreal surge
#

Prolly ease of maintenance but piss from a servicing NA perspective

#

btw im still 2002ing

deep sapphire
#

I gave up trying hours ago lol

#

they need to do rolling restarts

#

and kick all the afk abusers

#

and they should do this every morning until things relax

boreal surge
#

now I'm just tracerting all the dcs out of curiousity.

#

tracert 124.150.157.157

deep sapphire
#

having 0-1 percent packet loss is normal, but even during normal operations with NTT I would see sometimes 5-15 percent packet loss

modest moss
#

I'm just sat here quietly logged in to an NA DC from the UK with no lag and no disconnections

deep sapphire
#

it runs perfectly fine once in

modest moss
#

log in at 8am EST, don't log out

deep sapphire
#

I still anticipate them implementing daily restarts

#

its the only way you'll get an even playing field

#

I dont blame people for abusing the afk system

#

but at the same time

#

its frustrating as well

umbral moss
deep sapphire
#

the whole 2002 thing is absolutely inexcusable though

modest moss
#

I don't abuse the afk system, I just set an alarm and move my character every 8 minutes while I stop for food

deep sapphire
#

thats fine, and I wasnt accusing you of such

#

but there are a lot of people who are

modest moss
#

they stopped the inn cutscenes from keeping you logged in

umbral moss
#

also the 2.0-5.0 end credits autolog you haha

deep sapphire
#

I wonder how they plan to stop people from using outside tools to control their inputs

#

they have no way of proving that from a game perspective

#

as they dont scan your PC for programs

#

like a lot of other online games do

modest moss
#

I would imagine they can't

deep sapphire
#

which is why I think rolling restarts is the best solution

#

kick everyone off at 7am, if you are playing around that time you have little competition and can log back on np

boreal surge
#

So they have a separate contractor for EU, a german company.
Also something interesting:

boreal surge
#

like inside it.

#

So to recap

  1. NA servers are managed by NTT America, who also happens to own an L1 network and therefore any routing to them prioritizes getting onto their L1 network. And their DC tech is possibly crap. Also all 3 DCs are physically likely in the same location.
  2. JP servers are SE owned, it's possible they have their own japan wide WAN. Differences in SE WAN routing may imply that they're geographically separated.
  3. German servers are managed by KDDI, which lives under twelve99's L1 network. I have no idea why I have a really good connection to Chaos from Seattle.
umbral moss
#

all three NA DCs are definitely in the same physical location

deep sapphire
#

they are

#

all in Sac

umbral moss
#

they're mercifully on different boxes so if aether dies primal and crystal don't go with it

boreal surge
#

Yeah but NTT could fuck up with their DC and shut all 3 servers down

See facebook & co shutting down cause of DNS

umbral moss
#

that was a problem with the quebec colo though

#

the one entry point to canada was constantly shitting the bed because everyone thought it was the other person's problem to fix

What does disabling CSM do in the BIOS (outside of cutting off legacy stuff)? It was enabled so I disabled it, I run off a UEFI W10 so it booted fine. What else can it stop from working exactly?

sly elk
#

CSM presents your computer to the OS as if it were an oldschool machine using BIOS

#

I can't find a nice explanation on a page so I'll try and give you a really goofy TL;DR, sorry if I botch it up

#

for the most part, anything made in the last 10+ years uses UEFI

#

it is a more sophisticated, more 'universal' way of making the firmware for your motherboard and the glue the OS uses to reach the hardware on it

bleak sonnet
#

Any fixes for that audio bug?

iron kiln
#

Does it affect things like old hardware? I have a drawing tablet that’s from 2008 lol or is it just the OS and the PC hardware itself that checks CSM?

modest moss

not that we've seen, keep hassling SE

but most of the time people just call UEFI firmware "BIOS" anyway, including a lot of menus

iron kiln

Hmmm that makes sense, I suppose I’ll leave it disabled then since it’s apparently required to be set to disabled to fully allow Secure Boot with Windows UEFI

Think of it as a movie providing surround vs the theater only providing surround.

You can do more interesting shit with the surround when you're toying with the source.

#

How interesting is an exercise left to the listener

lapis talon

so it lets you fine tune the audio to exactly how you like it?

I'm assuming it's more of they fine tuned it to make it sound like you have real directional audio

It's just another Razer Surround/Nahimic software like

umbral moss
#

like, audiophile stuff is nominally Super Isolated to preserve The Frequency or whatever shit, but I don't see how applying audiophile oil to a SSD makes it any better than a bog-standard noise-rejecting PCB design

#

there's something to be said for quality cable design and there's a marked difference in quality between a $3/m cable and a $15/m cable, but not so much between $15 and $250

sly elk
#

@umbral moss i first heard about digital snake oil a couple years ago. their logic seems to be that the lower clas...err.. quality equipment passes more noise to the analog amplifier/speakers, and that's why you'd want a $200 ethernet cable

#

i'm not sure which angle they're going for here

#

sounds like "we filtered the power going to the drive so that the bits remain purer" which is insane 😄

#

i wonder if their heads would explode if they found out their virgin sound bits were encoded on a random apple/dell machine with an off the shelf SSD

umbral moss
#

like, I guess

#

but that's not what any of that noise isolation shit does

sly elk
#

they're just in desperate need for a hobby

imho the external power supply for the SSD was the icing on the cake for me

I wonder if motherboards are designed to handle backfeeding power through the pcie pins

i've seen some very strange cards in my time, and I mean, GPUs do get 'external' power but not like this XD

umbral moss

that's typical

#

there's some level of "yeah, maybe you do need some power filtration", but not to the extent that you're talking picovolts of ripple

why would you use a toroidal core instead of a IGBT setup

#

you should absolutely be dodging any analog components in your power delivery circuitry if you can avoid it because of the reactive power issues

so much humbucking you need to engineer in to keep the PFC reasonable

sly elk
#

I very much like what I hear! Swapping from mobo power to external LPS is indeed a major step up. Even quieter background and the biggest difference is a big increase in dynamics, more body, better controlled (tighter) bass, and more air around individual instruments and vocals with better detail again.

umbral moss
#

I bet that supply pisses 60Hz noise everywhere

and what they're hearing is the transformer core's resonance being picked up in their headphone voice coils haha

yea in another thread someone's talking about a custom PC build using an audiophile power supply with separate 5v/12v instead of using a normal ATX power supply

a high-quality single rail 1000W PSU will have practically zero ripple and extremely high wall efficiency

a normal high quality 1000w psu will probably produce cleaner power and have lower chances of defects since they mass produce the dang things

sly elk

🙂 true

umbral moss
#

there's like 30% redundant power/ground pins on an intel chip because they don't trust manufacturers to make all the pins on an LGA correctly

#

which begs the question of why the fuck they need so many pins if they aren't going to use them in the first place

sly elk
#

oooo this is a really fancy ethernet cable

umbral moss
#

I bet it performs like shit too

#

because it's super fucking thin and has zero crosstalk isolation

sly elk
#

"Network cables carry digital information, and, just like all other digital cables in a system, the data transfer is incredibly sensitive to tiny variations in amplitude and spacing. These can rob drama and vitality from a performance by hiding musical nuances, bleaching colours, and flattening dynamic contrasts. It’s important to know that higher data rates are more vulnerable to external interference too. That’s why maintaining data integrity is more important than transfer speed when streaming music."

umbral moss
#

you know, things that actually matter to a cable like that

#

the ideal cable design is just a big dick coax cable with a strong dielectric and triple woven shielding

sly elk
#

this reminds me of a few years back when somebody was talking about "bleaching emails"

umbral moss
#

look at how thin those braided sections are

#

that's like 32AWG wire

#

or thinner

#

there's 11 pins in ethernet

#

😱

sly elk
#

the chances of there being a defect in the sound file between their host and their receiver are so tiny lol

umbral moss
#

the impedance on those things must be bonkers, have fun load-matching that over any sort of distance

sly elk
#

like I agree with your comment

umbral moss
#

also have fun measuring your voltage on the receiver end

sly elk
#

all they're doing is making things worse lol

umbral moss
#

yeah

#

nearly all of these things are overengineered to convince people that robustly engineered products are bullshit and you need this Very Elegant solution

#

that doesn't work

boreal surge
#

Because having your song stop and go is a lot more disruptive then having minor details lost.

sly elk
#

it seems what that dude with the crazy power supply setup did is stream to their .. ipad? with a program called euphony?

#

-scratches head-

umbral moss
#

there's just a limit to how far you can go with thin gauge wires because the losses kill your signal quality below the recovery threshold at the load end

#

(this is also why HDMI is a bullshit spec designed by assholes who have no fucking idea how cables work)

boreal surge
#

But I find it hard to believe the slightly better than average cable won't be sufficient

umbral moss
#

specifically to drop that impedance/m value and increase the distance you can go before the vdroop kills you

boreal surge
#

Yeah makes sense + has better EM shielding.

umbral moss
#

yeah

#

ironically these cables aren't very expensive

#

because they're not desirable

boreal surge
#

Cause they can't turn as much for home use right.

umbral moss
#

they're only like 15-20% more expensive than a monoprice bullshit cable just because of the extra cost of the cable stock

boreal surge
#

Remember some of that shit from my networks class

umbral moss
#

nah, it's just that consumers don't value them

boreal surge

IM IN

umbral moss

boreal surge

Makes sense.

umbral moss
sly elk

umbral moss

you can get thick boy cables with in-wall insulation for cheap too

sly elk

the fat cables are pretty annoying

umbral moss

it's all hidden to the user

boreal surge
#

Yeah when i said home use was specifically referring to the not hidden to the user bits.

umbral moss
#

eh, even the thick boy cables are still malleable enough to make reasonable bends for visible applications

#

I use thick boy HDMI cables and they're fine

#

if you live in the US you should be using BJC for any cables you want to run because they actually provide cert info on anything you buy

boreal surge

boreal surge
umbral moss
#

imagine what could have been if sony wasn't so fucking effective at lobbying for proprietary bullshit 😔

boreal surge
#

Imagine what could have been if the public and lawmakers could be arsed to ignore lobbying for anything.

umbral moss
#

well, HDMI is largely sony and a handful of other media outlets

#

the reason HDMI even exists is because sony wanted a proprietary connector and an obnoxious DRM scheme in the same cable/connector

#

SDI and DP are capable of the same bandwidth without the DRM overhead penalty, which is why they have higher bandwidth at the same "generation" as HDMI

#

you lose 12% of your HDMI bandwidth to HDCP

umbral moss
#

they did the same thing with blu-ray but forced the issue with making the BDR part of the PS3 at a huge loss (it was 30-40% of the PS3's BOM cost in 2006, and a large chunk of why there's so many fuckbright blue LEDs around)

boreal surge
#

Huh, learn something new a day

#

mmm i honestly wish i could give you a better convo over this

#

not enough knowledge

umbral moss
#

HDMI makes me extremely angry because of how shitty it is as a spec, connector, and cable

umbral moss
#

behold, a shitload of good info on why HDMI sucks

#

from a company that manufactures the cables

#

imagine designing a spec around an extremely fragile 38-conductor connector, and then making sure that connector is non-locking so it can have intermittent contact when the cable weight pulls the connector boot

odd sand
#

Yeah, I got a really thick gauge HDMI cable some years back and I was worried it would pull on the port in the TV too hard. Had to make sure it was routed to avoid that as much as possible. Which was a bitch bc the cable was hard to even bend

sly elk
#

yep

#

I dislike both HDMI and displayport pretty equally though

umbral moss
#

at least DP tries with a locking tab on the connector

sly elk
#

if you have both attached to a monitor with cable management too tight and then try to rotate your screen

HDMI is like "haha, good luck bitch"

We have mini-DP connectors at work that are non-locking, so you try to adjust the monitor on the adjustable stands and it pulls them out lol

I have one knocking around that I can plug in if I need to, but nah I don't put one in as standard

#

unless you're ripping CDs and care about them being exact copies with EAC or whatever, just get a usb dvdrw or something

fading sparrow
#

Anyone getting random micro stutters since EW launched? Not sure if ti might be tied to the most recent nvidia drivers either..

a lot of my favorite shows are on dvds or blurays and I think physical media is still king for that kinda stuff

#

tbh if I could buy modern games on disk without them requiring a phone-home to some server, I'd probably buy them on disk too

#

it sounds silly but I can grab a cd from 20 years ago and play a game on it just fine

#

guess there's always the possiblity the disk breaks or wears out, but you could clone the disk and keep the original

Yea, since they moved boot devices over to USB that was basically it for DVDs unless you're ripping media

Tethering imo

It’ll help keep battery life from tanking, and it’s probably a better signal than hotspot since it’s cabled

Plus it keeps other people from trying to ride off it

#

odd question but why relaunch the 2060 again like I'm pretty sure given a choice no one would get it (ya I know no one have much of a choice in this days and time and but it feels so wrong)

hard drift
#

lesser utilized node so they can hopefully get out more cards since the situation is so bad and or they had leftovers from the 2060 when it first released

#

that is pretty much the reason

modern iris
#

maybe but I hear that card is also a lot better for mining more then anything that sure as hell doesn't help much out minus the fact there also a lack of msrp (not like that matter hell you can sell a old ass card for over $1000 and someone will still get it in this day)

hard drift
#

it'll help for mining anyways 🤷‍♂️ more memory to use to mine for a cheaper cost but that isn't the purpose of the card although it may wind up used that way

modern iris
#

ya let's give more cards to the miners then again not like nividia cares when they are making more from them then us anyway

#

a lot more from them that is

hard drift
#

🤷‍♂️ it'll happen one way or another just have to wait until mining changes to proof of stake

modest moss
#

2060 relaunch is definitely not an altruistic move, they've said it's a 'premium product' and will be priced accordingly iirc
