#

I’d just buy a second pc for that price tag tbh

#

But it would be big and louder

#

And use more power

sly elk
#

well

#

so they have a nice 4k camera that costs $450, but it comes free if you buy the nvr pro for $500

hazy frost
#

That’s a decent deal then

#

It’s basically $50

sly elk
#

which makes it an OK deal because if you buy that kinda camera from hikvision/dahua/whatever it's going to be $150-200-ish anyway

hazy frost
#

It’s probably worth like $150 imo

#

The $500 is insane tho

sly elk
#

yep lol

#

but at the same time

hazy frost
#

It’s pricing to make u buy the other products too

sly elk
#

even if i didn't consider the camera

#

$500 for a 7 bay nvr is kinda funny?

#

like I can see why it uses a little arm and sata and stuff

#

if they used sas and a proper cpu and ram it'd cost >$1k lol

#

meh I have high hopes fo rit

#

in theory this should work as well as nest cameras but without the cloud shit

hazy frost
#

Price product abysmally, sell product with other product ‘free’ to make it look like good deal, profit

#

That’s basically how everything is sold these days

sly elk
#

yep lol

#

but unifi cameras are way overpriced

#

like 2x-3x what you could get a dahua/hikvision/amcrest/reolink for

#

what tipped me in favor was the newest version of unifi protect can record from those cameras, too. And I haev a bunch of amcrest stuff still

#

so it softens the blow of switching over a little

hard drift
#

Should just stop making non x3d processors period 😭

sly elk
#

or at least come up with a different name for the not-x3d stuff

hazy frost
#

7950x is goated tho

sly elk
#

ya like

hazy frost
#

So is the 7600 and 7500f

#

The problem is the 7700x and 9000 series mostly

sly elk
#

the hard part here is that some of the CPUs are awesome, just not most optimal for running 1 game on

hazy frost
#

It’s kind of just the same thing as 13-14th gen Intel except

#

Am5 got more efficient and lga1700 got less efficient

sly elk
#

but they might be great for some kinda other computing tasks

#

anything's better than 11th gen intel 😄

hazy frost
#

7900x and 7950x are both decent

#

The 9950x not so much T the current price

hazy frost
#

lol

#

12th seems to be an anomaly

#

Of recent times

sly elk
#

lol

#

13th and 14th did pretty good until they didn't!

#

the funny thing is

#

when i bought my 7800x3d ^ I used that gif a lot as a joke 😄

#

like hahahha look at this idiot not getting a 13900k

#

WTF HAPPENED INTEL

#

how did I end up with the reliable cpu this gen lmao

hazy frost
#

13900k was mid even before they had issues

#

7950x ate it up in most tasks

#

Or 7800x3d for just gaming

#

I miss stuff like the 12400f

#

Or the 12900k tbf it stood a lot better against competition

dapper nymph
#

how tedious is it to replace just the motherboard

inland mauve
#

most other components are plugged into the motherboard directly

#

it's basically the central nervous system of your PC

#

so pretty much the most tedious thing to replace

sly elk
#

Yep. But how big a deal that is, is up to you.

#

and also what are you changing the motherboard in

#

a regular diy pc? It is indeed the most time consuming part to replace, but not the end of the world. A Dell? Fucking Hell.

#

^ for someone who's done it before lol

inland mauve
#

the advantage of replacing the mobo in a PC you built yourself is that you were the one who put it in in the first place so you know what to watch out for

#

also good luck replacing anything if you have a recent high end GPU

#

GPUs have gotten too bloody big

wise jay
#

I want more storage but no fucking way am I taking my 4090 out right now

inland mauve
#

same

#

I lost a hdd to a dead sector and my mobo has M.2 slots left but they're behind the GPU

#

and fuck that lol

wise jay
#

its on a vertical mount too so its even worse with how big it is

inland mauve
#

that's going to take me an entire evening

#

I needed a second person to get the damn thing in properly the first time

dire viper
#

@potent arrow oh btw the Catalina is coming back, a company is going to produce them for private, commercial and military use again

#

we will have sub hunter catalinas again

#

THE BLACK CATS WILL RETURN

sly elk
dire viper
#

yes

#

the new ones will have turbo props

#

so they will be insanely loud

#

they're making the new ones on the original US factory for the Catalina

sly elk
sly elk
#

i figured some third world country did lol

dire viper
#

no

#

the Catalina was built globally

#

its a US design

#

its why its called the Consolidated Catalina

sly elk
#

ohhh

#

flying boat and amphibious aircraft

dire viper
#

yes

#

the Black Cats took Catalina's and where there was a 50 cal they changed it to a twin and some of the Black Cats had a 20mm for the rear facing lower gun

sly elk
#

In July 2023 a company called Catalina Aircraft, current holder of the Type Certificates for the Catalina, announced an intent to build the Catalina II, a new aircraft on the basic design principles of the original Catalina but using turboprop engines and other modern aviation tools.[44][45] Deliveries are said to commence by 2029.[44]

dire viper
#

ye

#

it will basically just be a catalina but modernized

#

the Catalina is still used around the world

#

they will probably never not be used

#

same with the grumman goose

#

so unique are the needs of a seaplane that the ones from WW2 are still adequate today

#

Just got the LTT messenger laptop bag in the mail the other day. I was apprehensive on buying the small one, but it's almost a perfect fit for my Surface studio laptop

odd sand
golden stream
#

ayyyyyyyy neato

odd sand
#

Laptop is 14.4" screen and fits inside the laptop compartment almost exactly (it was probably their test item for fitting the small, honestly)

#

My only small gripe at first test is it bulges with the power brick. If I had to daily drive it, I would probably buy a 100W GaN charger instead for a smaller footprint.

#

But that isn't their fault really.

#

If you have good battery life or can use it on USB-C power somewhere when you get there, you could comfortably fit a tablet and maybe even a notepad inside. I currently have the tablet on the outside sleeve and that works decently even with the power brick, but it's definitely at capacity without feeling like I'm abusing it.

golden stream
#

I do want to change my power brick to a 100W GaN but then it uses the olde round AC plug playdead
also it's a 150W OEM brick so um

#

imo it's nice for a common office laptop w C port charger + tablet
saw some peep on reddit saying the bag may bulge quite a bit w some stuff but then diff people diff load

odd sand
#

Dunno how much getting a 150W would help me, as that looks to be the same thickness as the power brick, but probably a size savings for you:

golden stream
#

like I just measured my tote bag yesterday, hell it's 6.6kg instead of 5kg as I thought

golden stream
odd sand
#

Only downside to those gan chargers is you might burn a hole in your bag if you have to stuff it inside on short notice /s

golden stream
#

I mean, fair ye

#

it really does, but only if I have any device need it, currently couldn't replace the laptop AC brick aaaaaa

odd sand
#

Size comparison between the 737 ganprime and the new "anker prime" gan3 charger

#

Looks to be 35% smaller, so 35% hotter? heh

#

Well, I suppose it's 20% less current with multiple devices plugged in. Even the one on the left says it's only 100W max per port

golden stream
#

actually it ain't that heat up if multi device plugged in but prob depend on load

#

I have a GaN 65W but only a C port and an A port, it heats up p uhhh if use both port but kinda depend on load

#

phone is fine, no heat at all but charging my power bank or steam deck, ye defo does heat up

odd sand
#

It's all about the amount of current that has to flow through it.

#

GPUs needing insane coolers bc of the wattage they draw should have taught you that haha

wise musk

shadow oracle
#

the LNP government fucked up our national broadband badly

#

cos they looked at it and went "hmm great plan but theres not enough privatisation happening"

wise musk
#

Belgium btw

shadow oracle
#

because it was meant to be a government owned infrastructure project

#

all the services belonged to this one organisation called the NBN

#

and then the LNP came in and went "yeah but what if we ran it like a for profit business"

deep sapphire
#

you guys literally live on a giant island with nothing around it and only have 2 coastal populations completely opposite of eachother with nothing between them of course its gonna be expensive

#

you think copper is free or something

shadow oracle
#

so now we have a monopoly on wholesale services by a government department thats run like a private company

shadow oracle
deep sapphire
#

thats exactly why its super expensive in canada

#

its dense population and then nothing

shadow oracle
#

if I didnt know anything about the nbn rollout in australia I would simply shut up but ok

deep sapphire
#

thankfully satelite internet is getting a lot better

shadow oracle
#

because clearly you dont understand how it happened

#

cos nobody is running fibre to boganville, population 200

#

intercity connections and fibre backhauls are also by far the cheapest part of this project too lol

#

mostly because we already had fibre backhauls between the major cities anyway

dire viper
#

Well

#

Internet shouldn’t be a private thing

#

I pay 20 bucks a month for fiber because it’s price regulated by my city and is seen as a service rather than a good

My internet has only been down like twice this year

#

The ISP and line layers are two different entities

#

Line layer does maintenance regularly and updates stuff

#

Both times the internet was down they gave us notice

#

Cause it was maintenance related

#

Seeing as it’s so good here companies worth tens of billions should be able to figure it out better than a regional isp and a single state based line laying company lmao

If the 5070/ti has 12GB again that’s insane

I can already see the 3k 5090 asus models

Intel might have a not terrible gpu one day..

Once again nothing to make me wanna upgrade without buying used lol

#

Game devs need to learn how to use texture streaming if 12gb of vram still isn't enough

#

It's not the 2010s where SSDs were only for OS drives

hazy frost
#

Or Nvidia need to do what AMD do and give us reasonable amounts of memory

shadow oracle
#

Meh, software devs get away with hardware performance increases too much

#

I'd rather have better optimised games

hazy frost
#

Texture streaming helps but if u want improved graphics then it’s going to use more memory

shadow oracle
#

Ok but clearly most games that "demand" 16gb of vram really shouldn't need it

hazy frost
#

The games aren’t actually all that bad, the problem is Nvidia giving u 12GB of vram on $800 graphics cards

shadow oracle
#

Cos they look like shit lol

hazy frost
#

??

#

Which game looks like shit and uses 16gb of vram lol

#

If any is like that it’s an exception and not a rule

hard drift
#

@deep sapphire i would just like to say fuck sony lmao

#

what do you mean it's not a public specification that you disclose

deep sapphire
#

They have horrible support

hard drift
#

this was about their new product too 😭

shadow oracle
#

Oh ffs

#

Oh for fucks sakes

shadow oracle
#

But also TLOU before the texture streaming update

hazy frost
#

TLOU doesn’t look like shit tho

#

And u said in the same sentence it’s not an issue now either way

shadow oracle
#

Because texture streaming was implemented lol

#

They gave a shit and optimised the game post release

hazy frost
#

And like I said exception not the rule

#

It’s not on game devs to try and optimise games for hardware that’s been neutered by Nvidia bc they don’t wanna spend $10 more on manufacturing a gpu

shadow oracle
#

?????????

#

It's not on NVidia to put more vram on their gpu so devs can be lazy when porting games to PC

#

See how this argument can come back around again?

hazy frost
#

It’s not for lazy game devs lol

I had my work laptop in my bag and then a full bottle of kraken rum (going to work the 2nd half of friday from my buddies place) but the cap was defective and when sloshing in my bag it spilled out and leaked into mostly the display side of the laptop. So there is still a discoloration in the screen. Using dark mode you basically can't see it, but it's super obvious on any light background.

Just wasn’t right losing that G3 boot chime

Yea, the lead researcher who found it was apparently originally getting pushback from fedora and Linux foundation about just how bad it really was

thankfully that port isnt really used much aside from maybe local printers

you wouldnt really have that as a front facing port to the outside

late basalt

But… we all know it only takes a few brain cells to do something that stupid

#

But even then, if a malicious actor can get access into the network somehow, it’s pretty fucked

#

Like, I write software, I get it, I get how someone can be defensive about the stuff they write, I really do. But holy sh, if your software has been running on everything for the last 20 years, you have a freaking responsibility to own and fix your bugs instead of using your energies to explain to the poor bastard that reported them how wrong he is, even tho he's literally giving you PoC after PoC and systematically proving your assumptions about your own software wrong at every comment. This is just insane.

deep sapphire
#

The Apple Mouse (A1152) (formerly Mighty Mouse) is a multi-control USB mouse manufactured by Mitsumi Electric and sold by Apple Inc. It was announced and sold for the first time on August 2, 2005, and a Bluetooth version was available from 2006 to 2009. Before the Mighty Mouse, Apple had sold only one-button mice with its computers, beginning wi...

#

The mouse has four functional controls: a left capacitive sensor, a right capacitive sensor, a trackball with a pressure sensor and side squeeze sensors. The track ball enables users to scroll a page or document in any direction, including diagonally. Instead of mechanical buttons, the touch-sensitive topshell (mentioned below) and the pressure-sensing trackball allow the mouse to detect which side is being touched or whether the trackball is being held in.[2][3][4][5]

sly elk
#

but the 'ears' on the pro mouse did nothing, they were just there so you could move the mouse without clicking it

deep sapphire
#

yeah so I wasnt crazy haha

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

ye that 'squeeze the ears and push the scroll nib' thing sounds awful lmao

#

i thought they made one before the magic mouse where you could right click by just tapping the right side

#

seems i was wrong

#

also there's a far easier way to right click than that...

#

and it still works

#

you hold the ctrl button on the keyboard when you left click

#

i always had a hand on my keyboard anyway so i never really cared about having the right mouse button back in those days

deep sapphire

yep

i think the g4 imac was basically the same computer minus the crt

hazy frost

Leaks say the 9950x3s and 9900x3d should do

#

Unlike the 7000 series

#

I don’t think the 9950x3d is going to be worth it either way

#

9900x3d maybe

#

U might as well get the 7950x3d cheap if that’s what u need

#

Would be way more than adequate for gaming either way

#

And probably cost $200 or more less lol

#

7950x3d is almost $200 under what it was at release rn I think

#

It retailed for $700 and it’s like $450 now

#

9950x3d is potentially gonna be the same or more while the 7950x3d gets cheaper

Bc you’ll likely have the same gaming performance with the 9950 or 7950 and a similar performance elsewhere judging by the normal x model

deep sapphire

Sandybridge was one of the most legendary processors ever made

I don’t think they will ever have anything that can top its status

The fact you could overclock it to 4.6 GHz and have it still relevant even today is insane

dire viper

the good ol days 😔

hazy frost

Even more recently things were still better

#

Up until 9th gen and then 12th gen is cool but started to become unreasonable with how much power it draws anyway

An overpriced 920

hazy frost

he could overclock that 12900k to the moon lol

icehunter's rig had a custom loop with 3x120mm radiators

hazy frost

I’ve seen but presumably if ur even considering upgrading u don’t overclock

Which I do think is stupid with any custom loop

U can squeeze more than enough out of a 12900k

I’d just wait another year to upgrade lol

sly elk

yea i don't disagree

with desktop parts i usually like upgrading every 3-5 years or so lol

@deep sapphire i'm thinking of replacing the radio unit in my escape with a media receiver, any brand recommendations? I'm seeing nods towards kenwood or jvc so far

sly elk

whatever the point is where there's enough new shiny doodads to make me wanna upgradfe

deep sapphire

most of the cheap chinese brands on amazon arent worth it but are much cheaper

sly elk

off the top of my head i'd recommend a sony

deep sapphire

sony, JVC and kenwood are all good brands

#

so you cant go wrong with any of them

#

pioneer as well

sly elk

also alpine yes? xD

but the alpines and pioneerss can get quite expensive

does that include installation

late basalt

nah, just the unit itself

deep sapphire

check amazon and see if its competitive

sly elk

deep sapphire

sly elk

deep sapphire

sly elk

watch out

late basalt
#

i already know i'm spending ~200 on additional hardware to replace

deep sapphire
#

adapters arent expensive but you will have to crimp the wires yourself

sly elk
#

you probably need a dash kit

#

definitely check crutchfield then lol

late basalt
#

which is why i'm fine being slightly cheaper

#

but for this i will absolutely refuse to use amazon

#

i'm not getting no-lubed by some scammer selling fuckin sand in a box and having to fight amazon for a refund

deep sapphire
#

thats fair lots of counterfeit bullshit on there

late basalt
#

random shit i dont mine being chinesium? sure, i'm not spending a lot on it for that reason

deep sapphire
#

as kyanche said make sure its fully compatible and doesnt require a wire harness adapter

late basalt
#

but quality stuff like this? i want to know i'm getting my money's worth

deep sapphire
#

cause if it doesnt its pretty simple pull the center console dash out and remove a few screws

#

and remove the back connector

late basalt
#

almost gauranteed to need an adaptor if the bundle kits on RA are any indication

#

but for decade old car i cant complain that much

deep sapphire
#

well most automakers have standardized the din connector

#

since the late 90s

#

but you cant be too sure

late basalt
#

it's at least an option for me to give it the upgrade

sly elk
#

honestly

#

could just hit up ebay and probably find a $300 chinese kit that does wireless carplay/aa

idk how long it'd last though lol 😄

late basalt
#

rather not use something that might have an equal chance of setting my car on fire

#

anywho, time to head back to work playdead

hazy frost
#

Sony has a good one for like $250 iirc

#

Nvm it’s like $300

#

Still

#

Cheaper than what pioneer is selling

#

Sony AX1000 is what I was gonna buy bc it’s cheap here

#

It’s not particularly nice but it does everything it’s meant to do

sly elk
#

does the ax1000 do wireless?

#

but yea I agree on the sonys

#

iirc they also regularly go on sale

#

when I had my jk jeep i was planning to get one of those lol

#

tbh I might still eventually swap out the 8.4" uconnect radio in my jeep for one of those. I hate the 'connected' stuff

#

stellantis thought it'd be cool to send me full screen ads that I have to click dismiss on

hazy frost
#

Idk if it’s worth the $250 or whatever normally

#

Depends on ur expectations

#

Personally I only care that it does the job and not how fancy it is

#

So long as it’s responsive and not super ugly

#

I hate not having maps without my phone in a holder

sly elk
#

yea, I agree

#

responsiveness is #1

hazy frost
#

Yeah

#

Most are inoffensive looking anyway

#

I just need Spotify and maps anyway

sly elk
#

also kinda $$ but I do prefer units that have a map built in because

#

well I guess it doesn't matter if you have wireless carplay/AA

hazy frost
#

Yeah

sly elk
#

but if you don't, it's nice to have a map on the screen

hazy frost
#

Im probably gonna get that as the next thing for my car

sly elk
#

and even then my experience with carplay is that my phone randomly doesn't know which way it's facing

hazy frost
#

Exhaust and turbo must wait

#

CarPlay comes first

sly elk
#

so like every other block the map rotates back and forth

#

and that gets on my nerves

hazy frost
sly elk
#

they're terrible to use

#

but to just view it's fine

hazy frost
#

I’d rather just use my phone in a holder at that point

sly elk
#

also one thing I don't like in carplay is the maps don't show the speed limit unless you have a route going

hazy frost
#

Which is what I do rn but it’s not convenient

hazy frost
sly elk
#

it doesn't!

hazy frost
#

Oh well

sly elk
#

it might just be a carplay thing

hazy frost
#

I just always set a route tbh

sly elk
#

i use google maps by default LOL

hazy frost
#

Habit from using my phone

sly elk
#

yea I don't, I like just hopping in and going without worrying about it

hazy frost
#

I need to see the limit bc I can’t see signs in bushes here

sly elk
#

but I guess that's also why I like having a map on screen

#

if I'm going some place I'm not too familiar with, I tend to just remember the address and the general area surrounding it

hazy frost
#

But people get pulled over for looking like they’re using their phone when it’s for maps in the car

#

Which is a pain

sly elk
#

this also kinda goes back to the whole experience using navigation

#

it feels more stressful lol

#

the whole time I can see ETA and distance and shit

#

and if I'm falling behind the estimate, which I almost always am

#

and then finally I get where I'm going and I can't quite make that turn because of traffic, or I need to get into a parking garage half a block away

#

and my phone starts blowing up with

#

IN 300 FEET, MAKE A U-TURN

#

MAKE A U-TURN NOW

hazy frost
#

Lmao

sly elk
#

IN 28 FEET, TURN LEFT

hazy frost
#

I have the voice off permanently

#

I can’t put up with it

sly elk
#

and I'm like pulling into a parking garage and trying to talk to the security dude or whatever

hazy frost
#

I just check it whenever I can and remember directions

sly elk
#

and my phone is still there telling me i should make a u-turn across 4 lanes of los angeles parking lot traffic

hazy frost
#

I don’t wanna be told 7 instructions in a row at a big roundabout either

sly elk
#

yea xD'

hazy frost
#

It just gets unnecessarily confusing

sly elk
#

that it does

hazy frost
#

We have a lot of like 4 lane roundabouts here and it drives me crazy

sly elk
#

i also dislike the routes it gives anyway, sometimes they're way... more.... -shakes hands around head-

#

like the "make a u-turn in this area where nobody ever makes u-turns because it's dangerous AF"

#

or "take this street with a stop sign every single block instead of the main street because it'll save you 27 seconds"

#

the navigation built into cars is much funnier

#

in my old jeep it pretty much always told me to take the freeway, like 99% of the time, even if the freeway was a parking lot

#

even if the freeway added 3 miles to the trip

hazy frost
#

Old ones not updating for roadworks is a real pain

deep sapphire
#

buy a 454 radiator from the junkyard there

even includes an oil and trans cooler built in

All the ATX ones will have that

#

mATX ones maybe not

#

There’s some good matx ones that don’t cost much

Out of the more expensive ATX b650 boards probably the MSI tomahawk, b650e riptide, or b650 aorus elite AX

#

They’ve all got very good vrms and 3 m.2 with 2.5gb

#

And4-6 sata

#

Not sure whether u can use all of the m.2 slots and all the sata ports for all of those boards tho u would need to check

Hey yall, Im not sure if this is the place to ask but is there any documentation on high GPU usage over time for this game?

#

When I do a fresh restart of the whole PC, I can run the game perfectly fine 1440p 144fps max setting etc etc on a 3080

#

but over time, probably after 20-30 minutes, it dips down to 100s-110s

#

Confused on what it could be

Im just chillin in front of my house in shirogane to test this

#

Ehh

#

They’ve been cheaper than that without special deals

#

Before

#

I’d wait for the 9800x3d and see what happens

#

It’s actually cheaper to buy the 7950x3d rn in Canada lol

#

It’s $799

#

That’s fun

#

Actually a much better deal at that price than the 7800x3d lol

#

Tbh I think it’s better value just bc there’s no justification for a $560 7800x3d

#

I wouldn’t buy either rn tho

#

There’s no way the 7950x3d and 7800x3d stay that price

#

Not in stock for the 7800

#

U either cant get one

#

Or they’re like 90% above what they should be

#

People buying these instead of a 5700x3d are insane

#

The 5800x3d is like 3% faster and $150 more

#

That’s

#

Interesting

#

Idk why anyone would do that

#

Long screw to mount fans on both sides I understand but

#

Either give more productive information or don’t reply to me with some passive aggressive comment what’s the point

#

They’re the only one I knew was meant to use it so far

#

That’s what I replaced my old kit with and people didn’t have much information on who used what still
