sharp star
#

but hey they don't have silicon degradation issues

inland mauve
lost python
#

still weird to release them at all

#

guess they really had a ton of leftover stock

sharp star
#

I get that they're for people still on AM4, but it's also extremely weird considering that the 5700X3D and to a lesser extent the 5800X3D are still available

lost python
#

yeah

#

and they arent exactly faster than existing AM4 cpus in workloads either

inland mauve
#

praying to nanna

#

she has a personal investment into Intel now

#

maybe she can accomplish something from beyond

deep sapphire
#

why didnt they show it compared to the 5700X3D

hazy frost
#

The 5900xt would be good if the 5950x wasn’t on sale already lmao

#

It should just be a cheaper 5950x really

#

But rn the 5950x is like £50 less

cold yacht
#

Ain’t the 5800xt and 5900xt just for production

sharp star
#

production and for people who won’t budge off AM4

#

even then I still think they’re in weird spots

#

in gaming it’s just “why” and in production it’s nothing spectacular

#

but the real annoying part about it all is AMD’s claims of beating the 13600K and 13700K and using crap first-party data

inland mauve
#

so a lie then

sharp star
#

iirc they used the RX 6600 which is just

odd sand
#

The senior engineer on my team is driving me insane. I never know when he's randomly going to get mad at me for inconsequential shit.

#

We've been troubleshooting this issue for like 2-3 days now. I've been in all the calls with them actively troubleshooting it, etc.

#

Now suddenly he is concerned I said I added a query template to the tool during the troubleshooting process

#

"That's a production system!"

sharp star
#

if you're gonna have first-party data you can like

odd sand
#

Bruh... I added a query filter. It doesn't change any data and it doesn't even run automatically. It's simply a possible query you can run if selected...

sharp star
#

Use a reasonable GPU

#

but nah they gotta cherry-pick data to make it look good

#

I like how Hardware Unboxed got flak for using a 5950X to substitute a 5900XT prior to release

#

though anyone with two brain cells can figure out that they're virtually the same CPU

deep sapphire
#

all this does is make you not wanna speak up

cold yacht
sharp star
#

yeah it's been brought up a few times but Gelsinger is deeply religious and does this every Sunday

#

I just think it's poorly timed in the midst of Intel's latest nose dive

cant they just... not?
or come up with more numbers to use? or anything?

odd sand
#

When it could actually be worse: At least 14th gen are compatible with the 12th and 13th gen motherboards, so they could even send a 14700K to replace say a 13700K if they didn't have stocks of them anymore and they wouldn't have to provide a new motherboard to users

lost python
#

dont give them any ideas now

#

i think my ISP is nuking my network

#

literally exactly 21:00 at my local time the internet broke

#

aand it died again

#

and back again

dire viper
#

My ISP does maintenance exactly at 23:30 to 23:45

#

And it’s usually only down for like 2 or 3 minutes, it’s down the full time if they’re doing any actual service

deep sapphire
#

I wasnt even aware this was going on

#

Does anyone here need to take breaks from electronics or is it just me?

sly elk
#

not me i am looking at a screen all day long xD

inland mauve
#

electronics is my job

sharp star
hazy frost
#

Mine used to be 10 hours like every day bc I had screen auto turn off set to never and fell asleep watching YT

#

But it made me look insane if people saw my screen time

sly elk

lol 😄

wide juniper

pinging @deep sapphire because I need hardware help

#

lemme grab a picture too

deep sapphire
wide juniper
#

Finally have a new pc. Would getting some adapters to get any files I wanna keep out of these babies be out of the question?

#

these are the hdd and ssds from the laptop that the motherboard burnt out on

#

well, idk if it burnt out or what

deep sapphire
#

Yeah you can buy external drive caddy’s or drive sata adapters if you didn’t wanna hook it up internally

wide juniper
#

wondering if there are different adapters that i'd need

#

cause like idk if there's a specific adapter i'd need for this hdd and a specific adapter for the ssds

#

like if i'm correct i can get an HDD caddy pretty cheap

deep sapphire
#

The one on the left is SATA and the 2 on the right are M.2 NVME drives. I know they make SATA ones I’m sure Nvme ones exist as well

wide juniper
#

I can get a dock that's 27 bucks but there's also an adapter cable for like 8 bucks

#

either way looks like ordering drive docks off of amazon is infinitely cheaper than going to best buy

#

'sides it never hurt to learn stuff on the hardware side of things. hell maybe some day knowing how hardware works could get my mom out of a bind when she's.... well, older than she is already

deep sapphire
#

yeah its a good skill to have for sure

#

if your PC supports multiple NVME drives and it has an open slot you could always just install 1 at a time and transfer what you need if you wanted to save some money

#

up to you though

wide juniper
#

Oh also the non-acer branded one is the OS drive

#

The acer branded one is what I had FFXIV on.

deep sapphire
#

if you had an OS on it already and installed it natively Windows will probably show 2 versions of Windows and ask what one you wanna boot into, if you use the USB adapter it'll operate like any bog standard removable storage like an external HDD or flash drive etc.

you can get some decent mice and usb mics in that price range sometimes. or a usb hub. or a small ssd or something of that sort. sd card.

maybe a nice wireless charger?

#

there are also some neat tiny screens that get into that price range

Some few chifi earbuds can fit in that range (check crinacle stuff)

I do have a lotta stuff at that price range tbh

I like how silent quitting is just working the 9-5 and not doing anything extra

#

And that’s a problem ig

#

Not working unpaid overtime is anti American according to certain billionaires

hazy frost
#

Not working unpaid overtime is standard in the UK is the same

#

It’s expected

#

Idk anyone who actually gets paid for overtime at all here ngl

dire viper
#

Overtime is taxed more in the US

#

It’s dumb but you can get some crazy money doing overtime

#

I have a friend who does IT at a company and they actually pay him over time for after hours stuff and he already makes 35 an hour

inland mauve
#

yeah overtime is more expensive, that's why businesses try to fuck you over into doing it unpaid

#

it's double free labour for them essentially

dire viper
#

Yes

#

I’ve worked at companies that don’t care and had some outrageous paychecks with them

#

Like making 24 an hour and getting overtime on top of it and working 5 12’s lol

hazy frost
#

If u get compensated like u seem to some places in the US then it’s fair

#

Not a bad option from people I know who do it

yeah my normal pay im taxed at like 16% my overtime pay is taxed at 40%

sly elk

dire viper
#

I’m gonna get a UX degree me thinks

#

About 8k total for the two year

sly elk
#

i would say, if you're getting a degree, don't let job prospects sway you too much

dire viper
#

And talking with some ppl I know it’s not a bad gig now

dire viper
#

I would rather have a degree in something interesting that I would enjoy doing

#

Which UX is

sly elk
#

like heeding caution is good, and trying to become a generalist and soak up as much knowledge about different new things in college is very important

#

like especially for people who want to study CS

#

because the basic cs curriculum is just a skeleton framework

#

you learn your algorithms and OSes and other stuff

#

then you need to pick up places to apply it

dire viper
#

Don’t people treat the bare minimum bog standard computer science degrees as a red flag

sly elk
#

like do you want to get into scientific computing and help work in a bio research lab or something

dire viper
#

One of my friends hired a guy and that dude lasted 2 days

sly elk
#

or work on embedded computing and make robots/spaceships

#

or work on data science and ai stuff

#

my uni had a whole lot of classes that were basically applied cs/ee

#

and a lot of people did miss out on that stuff

dire viper
#

Had a 4 year degree and barely knew anything and it was an entry level IT gig helping with setting up company computers and what not

sly elk
#

a lot of people double majored cs and business

#

which I thought was foolish

#

but their goal was to get an mba so

#

-shrug-

dire viper
#

Real

#

Business degree looks good period

sly elk
#

ehhhhh

#

but it still leaves you short on applied cs

#

yea there's also background, right

#

like somebody who comes into cs and has never used a computer before

#

vs someone who's been writing programs and websites since they were like 10 or something

sly elk
#

(I know at least one really good programmer who never used a computer beyond basics before they went to college lol)

dire viper
#

Half of the people in the industry it sounds like, got their two year degree cause they were told they’d get paid a lot

sly elk
#

that may be the case

#

and to be fair, there's a wide gradient of skill needed sometimes

#

like I could see someone with basic knowledge taking a code bootcamp and getting good at javascript and landing a solid job

#

that's like the cs equivalent of becoming a phlebotomist

#

or a nurse aid or whatever

dire viper
#

My friend who runs the IT department at a power company is just constantly ranting about the inability of all the entry level hires to follow directions, apparently most of the ones that apply have never had a job before

sly elk
#

solid respectable job

#

but it's very entry level

dire viper
#

Yuh

#

The reason I want a UX degree is because it’s one of those things that would eventually be something I could do as a contractor possibly

#

Cause most companies don’t need a full time UX designer

some free courses are also worth taking if you don't mind not having certificate

dire viper
#

this is real

#

in the US we have Wester Governors but idk if they are a good online college, my uncle got his cybersec degree there that was required by IBM

#

but he already knew everything so he got his done in half a year

#

cause WGU lets you choose how long you spend on a degree, half a year to a few years

golden stream
#

you can Coursera iirc?

dire viper
#

thats true

#

the only thing is I have zero knowledge of programming or any sort of thing related

#

and I need motivation other than self motivation (like a hard deadline) to get me to do school stuff lmao

#

big time procrastinator

golden stream

dire viper

I would join the procrastinator association of america but i keep putting it off

#

tthats a real thing btw

golden stream

odd sand
dire viper
#

it would be cool if we had a federalized intern system for high school kids to work at registered companies with mentors that actually are good at teaching kids work ethic

#

I got lucky and just had a full time job when I was 16

odd sand
#

Mix in a smattering of helicopter parents, economy where entry level jobs for HS and college students are often taken by adults instead, socializing online instead of in person so they don't have experience dealing with people, etc.

dire viper
#

I dropped out and did online

golden stream
odd sand
#

I went back to college a few years back after being out over 10 years and it was crickets in any class where the teacher would ask for discussion or opinions

#

Nobody wanted to speak up about anything ever.

golden stream
#

asian schools are like, passive learning

dire viper
#

I do most of my social interacting online but ive worked with enough people and done customer service to be normalized to the average population :)

golden stream
#

meanwhile there are many works that you could do w/o a deg at all which downplay the degree

#

I kid u not, I went little to no training in IT but can assemble and diagnose PCs like nothing lololol

dire viper
#

mostly cause all my friends irl are like me and work a 9-5 and have to do other stuff to stay afloat

golden stream
dire viper
#

yes

#

idk if I should get a UX degree

#

what should I really aim for?

#

@odd sand what do you think would be the most useful type of degree to aim for going into the CS space these days

odd sand
#

Hard to say. Something like UX is a specialty, so it could be good or bad depending on the business climate.

golden stream
#

web? app? game? that's the point, UX is HELLA HUGE

dire viper
#

obviously a degree doesnt do much in the way of experience

cerulean talon
dire viper
#

but I have an uncle at IBM who said he would help me get experience if need be

#

(he said hed get me an internship if I wanted)

odd sand
#

I'd say in general, most companies don't appreciate UX enough. Probably only the silicon valley types actually pay much attn to it

dire viper
#

so large already entrenched companies or startups/small numbers companies

golden stream
dire viper
#

its outrageous the numbers those small headcount companies push

odd sand
#

I think cybersecurity is still growing/data science

dire viper
#

people in the industry for 8 years making 150k a year base but then they get a 400k performance bonus aaaa

golden stream
#

oh ye, in addition to UX, if you can afford any psychology crash course, do et, free or paid are fine

odd sand
#

So maybe go with a general CS degree, minor in business and take some electives for network security/analyst stuff.

golden stream
#

that's also a nice income every tax season lol

dire viper
#

I could do cybersec cause

#

my uncle is a team lead at IBM for the Cybersec R&D

#

been doing it... 15 years

odd sand
#

I'm going to be biased, but I think logging tools/SIEM products like Splunk or Datadog are in big demand if you get some certs for like Splunk power user and/or enterprise admin

golden stream
#

also recommend knowing tax stuff so peepo come to you and ask for plugging their number for calc

odd sand
#

It's funny you say that, because IBM just sold off Qradar

golden stream
dire viper
#

he says he still works for them

odd sand
dire viper
#

but originally he was working for his friend at his company that IBM bought and merged

#

he worked on Watson and a few other hush projects for government

#

not sure if hes part of the main department or if hes doing contract stuff

#

he makes absurd money so I would assume his team is not in the normal group of cybersec people

odd sand
#

Nice thing with Splunk is they have a free license, so you can spin up a container with it in minutes and there is lots of documentation online and I know people have courses they put up on Udemy etc.

dire viper
#

so what is splunk

odd sand
#

It's a logging platform with tons of bespoke apps/addons bolted onto it

dire viper
#

a CISCO company

odd sand
#

They were recently bought out by Cisco in the past year

golden stream
#

Splunk Inc. is an American software company based in San Francisco, California, that produces software for searching, monitoring, and analyzing machine-generated data via a web-style interface. Its software helps capture, index and correlate real-time data in a searchable repository, from which it can generate graphs, reports, alerts, dashboards...

odd sand
#

At it's heart though it's a platform to collect logs

dire viper
#

oh ok

#

the free version is business related think

odd sand
#

They offer a SIEM tool for cybersecurity monitoring, ITSI for general monitoring, analytics, SOAR is playbook automation

golden stream
#

also folks, real question, is a BA in cybersecurity worth it? I'm thinking getting a degree on coursera

odd sand
#

Splunk is also used by Formula1 race cars for real-time metrics from the cars streamed to the paddock

golden stream
#

they do some wild stuff ya

odd sand
#

Basically anything that can be turned into text logs, you can take that into Splunk and do stuff with it

#

I've only half joked about making mods for games that do text metrics and send that into Splunk and setup alerting

odd sand
#

IE: Poll when Darktide vendors turn over their item inventory and use the API to see what it is, record that into Splunk and send myself an SMS alert for items I'm looking for haha That was a use-case I cooked up when I played a lot of Darktide

dire viper
#

can splunk make assumptions using data its been fed

#

well

#

it should cause thats what you are using it for probably think

odd sand
#

I heard a couple years ago Splunk was hiring ppl fresh out of school for traveling installation ppl. They would train and you'd be making 250k after 2 years. Only issue is they're in SanJo/SFO area so that's $$$ for rent

dire viper
#

I mean yea rent is high but

golden stream
#

yeah

dire viper
#

compared to the income wtf

#

thats crazy good

golden stream
#

$$$ + tax man

odd sand
#

You just have to be willing to be on the road 3 weeks per month I think

#

But you could do that for like 2-3 years and transition to something else and be set well

dire viper
#

idk even 250k you are making a lot even with tax

#

more than the average american

golden stream
#

but prolly also utilities when you're on the road

odd sand
#

Nice thing with a lot of cybersec is you can get remote positions

golden stream
#

tho ofc having physical access is also nice if for sensitive works

odd sand
#

I kinda wish I was on a commercial contract for work instead of govt, bc I'd totally get a travel visa for Japan and work remote from there for like 3 months or something

dire viper
#

idk I probably shoulda done more when i was fresh 18

golden stream
odd sand
#

I could still travel domestically though. I've considered trying to find an airbnb I could rent for a month in summer and go visit Colorado or something

golden stream
#

gamejam/ludum dare, etc

dire viper
#

one of my cousins went to one of those training camps for aircraft powerplant stuff and now hes 24 working on contract for Lockheed Martin at an airforce base making 120k a year after tax

odd sand
dire viper
#

idk I have worked at a lot of places

#

thats my main thing

#

I just know how to adapt

#

I will jump head first into the deep end with shit

odd sand
#

One thing that may not be obvious is spinning your life experiences into bullet points on the resume

dire viper
#

true

odd sand
#

eg: I was staff for Anime Central for 10 years. I put that on my resume bc by the last few years we were scheduling/managing 250 events for 30k people event.

dire viper
#

I meant more that I wish I wasnt dumb and actually decided on something like a trade school

golden stream
#

yeahhhh that thing sucks but people not like seeing too many words

odd sand
#

I called it by their LLC name "Midwest Animation Promotion Society" instead of Anime Central, but still :)

dire viper
#

lmfao

#

real

#

idk I know an excessive amount about cars

#

thats my main interest

#

ultimately I wanna do that but cant do that without money

#

and I also find computers interesting

#

so shrug

odd sand
#

If you've ever done a hobby project and had to troubleshoot or make a project plan and execute on it

dire viper
#

like my skill set is so fucking wild

#

I can use any shipping program currently in use, sell people shit, I know how to zinc plate and sand blast stuff, rebuild vintage cars

odd sand
#

That could be a story to tell while interviewing. Ultimately for entry level they aren't going to expect much though, no matter what the job listing says.

dire viper
#

yuh

#

projects are important

#

shows you can follow through

odd sand
#

Well, that can be a point then: Able to adapt and learn quickly.

dire viper
#

idk I sold some shit for one of Jerry Seinfelds cars that one normally gets me through the interview good enough

odd sand
#

Bc for any job you get, you're going to have to learn their tools and org environment

dire viper
#

yuh

#

from what ive seen newer younger companies are better about that

odd sand
#

Working on classic cars requires being meticulous and detail oriented blah blah

dire viper
#

people are very front with how they do things and whats acceptable and whats not

dire viper
#

brake calipers

#

i was quality control cause I did all the shipping on them plus customer service pepeAgony

#

the level of knowledge I got there was insane

#

I can tell you what year a porsche is just by the brakes

#

I have mega brain rot

#

or uh

#

the 911S "S" Calipers

#

aluminum brake calipers produced by Fuchs that were forged

#

these would take 12-18 hours of hand grinding to restore properly

#

galvanic corrosion would eat them

odd sand
#

Speaking of brake calipers, I think I'm getting close to needing at least new front ones on my Stinger. At 40k miles now

dire viper
#

well, new pads and rotors

#

shouldnt need calipers

odd sand
#

That's what I meant

dire viper
#

yuh

odd sand
#

I bought it at 17k miles, so I dunno if they replaced the brakes then. I want to say they told me they didn't.

dire viper
#

I do miss working on brake calipers :C

#

it was very rewarding and satisfying

odd sand
#

I'm not feeling any obvious shudder while braking off the highway though, so it's probably fine.

dire viper
#

the 930 Turbo brake calipers are cool

odd sand
#

Just dreading the cost bc I dunno if I want to try doing them myself. Never worked with Brembo/oversized brakes before

dire viper
#

the aluminum casting back then was bad so they are very porous, so you have to cover them in vaseline and bake them, that is in original factory documentation lmfao

odd sand
#

Only my shitbox Saturn I had before

dire viper
#

monoblocks just require a pad slide out and then you can just hang the calipers from the strut and remove the rotor

#

plus unless your monoblock caliper is leaking you dont have to do anything on the caliper

odd sand
#

Yeah that's what I did with the Saturn as well. Although you needed a c-clamp to push in the piston as well

dire viper
#

brembo pistons are fully retracted when there is no pressure applied

odd sand
#

Ah okay, nice.

dire viper
#

slider styles use an adjustment mechanism so the pad makes proper contact

#

for all purposes the monoblock style caliper is superior to the slider but sliders are just as good when setup properly so shrug

odd sand
dire viper
#

its just brembo shit is expensive

odd sand
#

Yeah...

dire viper
#

cause its still all made in italy

#

so you are dealing with EU export taxes and what not

odd sand
#

The alternative is my Saturn where China bought up all the OEM bearing makers, so I literally couldn't buy a good wheel bearing for it

#

I was replacing them every 15-25k miles...

dire viper
#

wtf

#

thats wild

#

ive seen original factory wheel bearings on a 1973 911 still kicking in 2022

#

car had 180k miles too so it should have had them replaced but it never did cause it never had a problem

odd sand
#

Yeah my Mazda6 I had after that, I didn't have to replace pads for like 60k miles and I think I had to replace the front right wheel bearing at like 100k

dire viper
#

yea thats about right

odd sand
#

My two banes with the Saturn were the wheel bearings and burning oil bc their head gaskets were known problematic

#

So by the time I got rid of it, I was adding a quart every 500mi haha

#

Started out needing a quart every 1500mi at like 150k mi, then every 1000mi at 200k, and I sent it to the junkyard at 240k and it was 500mi per quart

#

Granted, I could have rebuilt the motor well before then but

dire viper
#

true but why would you

#

beater car

odd sand
#

I couldn't diagnose a water intrusion problem, so there was some rust in the frame etc. so I was just done iwth it

dire viper
#

also I hate reading brake discussion threads

#

I know too much to read dumb shit pepeAgony

#

people talking about cracking in drilled rotors, they should not crack if you fucking brake properly

#

daily commuting you should be soft on brakes, driving hard you should brake hard to soft

odd sand
#

I mean it was a plastic car, so if I wouldn't have had that water issue, it still looked very good for 200k+ mi. Driven full time for pizza delivery in midwest winters with all that salt etc and somehow the underbody still had the original powder coating on the frame

dire viper
#

your brake pedal allows you to modulate how the car is controlled, same with the throttle, proper control is essential

odd sand
#

Haha my friend annoys tf out of me with how he brakes

I drive for fun for like 8 hours every weekend and have done so for like 4 years

in the canyons here in the rockies

#

I am burdened with the knowledge of driving fast but smoothly

odd sand
#

He says I "roll stop signs" which tbf sometimes I do when there is nobody around, but what he thinks of as rolls is I softly come to a complete stop and the moment that happens I'm accelerating away again

dire viper
#

most people I get in the car with drive so poorly it takes a lot in me not to say something

dire viper
#

this is how I drive my stick

odd sand
#

When I first moved to Cali I took Kit Carson Pass in April

dire viper
#

I keep the car rolling ever so slightly so I can just give a tad of throttle and then let the clutch out

#

my car has a performance transmission so driving it smooth is not in my ability yet, specifically from a stop

odd sand
#

That was so much fun. It was me and this Subaru just bombing the pass at like 80-85mph

#

It was April so you still had the walls of snow on either side

dire viper
#

Just don't buy the cheapest. All rotors are about the same. They all come out of China these days. I'd get decent pads. They're more important. reddit is full of idiots

#

rotors are as important as pads cause if its a bad rotor compound you will never actually bed your brakes properly and your car wont be able to stop good ever

odd sand
#

Yeah even with my shitbox, I always got sport pads and rotors bc I knew I would be riding it pretty hard doing delivery

dire viper
#

also most rotors arent even out of china its only OE shit RAGE

#

if you buy aftermarket rotors for your euro car they're probably made in europe somewhere

#

asian car? probably made in the country of origin

#

It won't have any impact on how well you can brake though. It's the tires that stop the car. If you can engage the ABS your brakes are doing as much stopping as they can. Deathitself

#

this is not entirely true

#

most modern tire compounds very much outperform shitty brakes

#

so you should only worry about the limit of tires if you have full on 6 piston brembos and 4 piston brembos on the rear that can stop the car in half the time a standard camry can

#

and then you have something like a Porsche/AMG/Audi RS

odd sand
#

Imagine going thru here with 5m snow walls on either side heh

dire viper
#

my 150 dollar a piece tires are so good Ive never had tire slippage even driving at the limit but also I know when my car is going to bite me so I dont go past that point cause it makes you drive slower so shrug

dire viper

I've been up to Mt Evans twice as well. That's also a fun drive, but both times it was off-season so I could only get to echo lake, not the summit

#

Funny story: On that cross country trip my mom warned me to be careful, never know what dangerous ppl you might run into etc. and I'm like mom it's fine this is the middle of nowhere, nobody is out here to do anything

#

I went to echo lake to look around as the summit was closed and there was a news van in the parking lot of the campground that was closed for the season there

#

Turns out some lady had made death threats to some schools in Denver and then drove out there and walked off into woods and shot herself a short time earlier omegabruh

dire viper

CO is too expensive or I woulda found a job out there already

odd sand
#

Do you get to enjoy the wonders of BEAVER every weekend? /s

dire viper
#

utah has a large portion of the rockies so I only go up to colorado for extended trips

odd sand
#

Oh, are the mountains along 15/89 still considered the Rockies?

#

89 looks like it would be a lot of fun being in the valley between the mountains. Reminds me of the drive along I-395 in CA

dire viper
#

yes

#

its all rockies

odd sand
#

Only annoying thing about mountain driving is getting stuck behind slow traffic that won't use the gd turnouts

#

mfer you have like 10 ppl behind you, see that sign that says pull over for faster traffic? DO IT

dire viper
#

yep

#

Utah drivers are ass

#

they will drive 20 in a 50 cause its slightly uphill

odd sand
#

I only ever got to travel Big Sur once at full speeds. I was headed north just before sundown, so it has less traffic than heading the other way. Was able to bomb it in like 90mins for the 75mi route

#

Have to be careful though, bc you can't understeer or you might hit ppl coming around the outside

dire viper
#

thats why you dont go fast in a bad car

#

thats why so many accidents happen

#

people try going fast in an economy car

#

you dont do that

odd sand
#

They have a couple crazy fun back highways in Cali if you hit them at the time of day/week there isn't a lot of traffic:

#

I got to take 155 shortly after they had repaved the entire thing, so it was super smooth too

#

Kernville was a fun place too. They have a river going thru town that ppl hang out and swim and do canoe rides thru, and upstream is rapids so the rafters will start up there and end in town.

#

Gives me vibes of a less crowded version of St George maybe?

odd sand
#

As far as what general skills would be useful: Something like MS-101/102 certs, although they recently deprecated the classic versions of them

#

Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate

#

That is the closest thing I can find to the original MS-100-102 courses. Now they're focused on O365 and Azure

#

eg: General OS proficiency for Windows and Linux, familiarity with Azure and AWS

golden stream
odd sand
#

A SIEM tool like Splunk SOAR or Qradar

#

And possibly knowing a bit about PowerBI automation. Really depends on if you're looking to get a job at a place that uses Azure or is more focused on AWS or on-prem

golden stream
#

I do know a gist of PowerBI at old workplace tho

odd sand

Speaking of automation: At least a little experience with python, bash, and bat files.

#

golden stream

odd sand
#

How much you need that stuff as a Tier1 analyst probably varies depending on the maturity of the org you join

golden stream
#

atm I only aim for a general deg for some odd jobs and for the sake of my resume since my current one is iffy

odd sand
#

If you aren't in India, I would probably shy away from a degree thru them.

golden stream
#

oh the tuition over there is only 4k to me (special listed country)

odd sand
#

They're broadly viewed as diploma mills where most people cheat and have low skills

golden stream
#

hmmmm fair, yeah

odd sand
#

That said, plenty of Indian devs still get hired to jobs so maybe I'm talking out of my ass

golden stream
#

like, hell, that tuition fee is even cheaper than in my place

odd sand
#

I will say that in general, those degrees seem to lead to ppl who do performative work and aren't good at troubleshooting and problem solving

#

Dunno if that's just the culture or tied to the quality of the degree however

#

I get stories from my friend whose company employs like a dozen indian devs remotely and some of the facepalm stories about them are wild

#

He says your chances of a competent Indian dev are like 1 in 5, and those usually quit after 2-3 years to pivot to a higher paying job then heh

golden stream
#

well that's also their work culture as well

#

atm I plan to get a BA just for the sake of having a degree, the actual skills like troubleshooting I'd learn w my own pace

#

tfw I learned how to handle linux in these years more than an IT student fiddling it in a year but then I just nuke things if it is too headache to fix haha

dire viper
#

CS just seems daunting cause there’s so much to learn

#

I would like to learn a language on my own time but I would rather not learn Java cause I’ve been told I would smash my head into a wall with it

#

Also from my basically zero understanding, don’t languages work off of a logic that they adhere too so understanding a language requires understanding what makes it tick basically

golden stream
#

well, that, yeah

#

I'm getting a few free language courses to get the gist of each of them while working on my own short visual novel lol

How the hell do these things not combust from heat buildup?

#

I don't see how you can pack that much power in such a small space and not have it explode. Where's the cooling? Where do they put the power supply? How does it get airflow? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS! flawed

sly elk
#

coincidentally i realized that my gpu/motherboard get along better with my 57" monitor when connected via hdmi

#

so I guess i'll be retiring the cable matter dp kvm lol

modern iris
#

Yes.

sly elk
#

the apple silicon ones don't really produce heat lol

#

and they're mostly empty space inside

#

that said

#

at one point you could buy a mac mini with the exact same chassis and an i7 8700 jammed inside

#

oh wut

#

This model is powered by a 14 nm, 64-bit "8th Generation" Intel Mobile Core i7 "Coffee Lake" (I7-8700B) processor which includes six independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip. Each core has a dedicated 256k level 2 cache, shares 12 MB of level 3 cache, and has an integrated memory controller (dual channel).

#

wonder if an 8700b is undervolted

#

they did have a decent size vent

#

but it's just an exhaust vent lol. idk how they took air in

#

the bottom cap that goes over that is solid plastic

#

OH

The air inlet on the Mac Mini (2018) is located on the bottom. If you look closely at the circular plastic disc, you'll see that there's a gap between that and the metal part of the computer. This is the air inlet!

#

still funny because people would toss nh-d15s on the 8700k LOL

modern iris
#

huh- neat.

sly elk
#

to be fair the person using a nh-d15 on an 8700k would find the temperatures that 8700b in the mac mini would probably run... scandalous

modern iris
#

what's an nh-d15?

sly elk
#

a very large noctua cpu cooler

#

never held one but from the pictures i'd guess it's like a mac-mini-sized-cube LOL

The recipe for a successful sports car is simple: great looks, great name, and a vocal engine.

VW's Scirocco replacement had gorgeous styling and an Italian-sounding name. But the supercharged G60 engine was a disappointment. Slower than the Scirocco 16V it replaced, the new-technology four-cylinder Corrado G60 didn't find many fans.

Alright so tech folks;

A few days ago I started getting errors while using my browser that said they were possibly related to memory/install issues where the page or the browser would crash and restart.

I also started having my GPU program (Adrenalin) and my fan/RGB (iCue) program either not starting at launch properly or not fully working without having to quit and restart then.

My CPU (7800x3D) also started randomly having the temp spike from like 55 to 73/83 while just using the internet or doing minor things like opening Steam.

Then a couple of my games would crash either during gameplay or when trying to exit.

I followed MS's troubleshooting and tried to run the Windows Mem Diagnostic, but it crashed. I tried it again but it reported no issues. I Then went into Safe Mode, did the whole SFC/DSKCHK thing which reported nothing. Just to be safe I used DDU to uninstall my GPU drivers and did a fresh reinstall and update.

For a day it seemed fine but the browser crashes came back, and then thus morning while trying to play some CP2077 my comp freaks out, the lights on stuff turn red and iCue says it's in Failsafe mode because the CPU is overheating. It doesn't crash and kept running everything but I just held the power button force shutdown.

Any ideas?

have you enabled ECO mode for your CPU in the bios?

lime wasp

A corsair 360 AIO

real edge

well have you checked that your cooler works properly

#

also

#

enable ECO mode for your CPU in the bios

lime wasp

Its been working fine for months

real edge

somethings not working now

#

check it

just in case

and enable eco mode

lime wasp
#

Okay, let's go with the hypothetical and say that doesn't work - what would be next?

real edge
#

depends on what does not work

#

if its the pump or the water you can replace them

#

etc

sly elk
#

if the cpu is overheating then either your cooler came loose or the pump died or something

#

it's not unheard of for the pump to die, but corsair coolers usually have 5 year warranties, so there's at least that

sharp star
# sly elk https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/08/almost-unfixable-sinkclose-bug-affects-...

Honestly this sounds like a day that ends in Y? This requires physical access to hardware and Intel's issues are much more serious due to the fact that:

  • They have been known for at least two years but have not been publicly disclosed them until the last few months
  • Intel does not have a clear path for remediation and has screwed up customer support over the course of this bullshit
  • Intel unwilling or unable to provide date code ranges has eroded a lot of trust and, frankly speaking, caused more FUD than a vulnerability that won't affect most AMD end users
wraith agate
#

I won't buy that

#

unless the article lies about hundreds of millions then I wouldn't call it an everyday thing

#

most of them are probably workplace computers at multimillion dollar companies but that doesn't mean users aren't affected

well as people already pointed out, you already need nearly full access to the machine to exploit this

sly elk

and I coul;dn't go tool-only because the stupid milwaukee one is m12 instead of m18 so

also carbon fiber looks like ass when used too much and like

its cause its mostly fake carbon fiber

there was a guy at work that had a gla in that matte silvergrey paint job

those car-uvs always gave me 'crocs' vibes
