that we know of
I get that they're for people still on AM4, but it's also extremely weird considering that the 5700X3D and to a lesser extent the 5800X3D are still available
yeah
and they arent exactly faster than existing AM4 cpus in workloads either
praying to nanna
she has a personal investment into Intel now
maybe she can accomplish something from beyond
why didnt they show it compared to the 5700X3D
The 5900xt would be good if the 5950x wasn’t on sale already lmao
It should just be a cheaper 5950x really
But rn the 5950x is like £50 less
Ain’t the 5800xt and 5900xt just for production
production and for people who won’t budge off AM4
even then I still think they’re in weird spots
in gaming it’s just “why” and in production it’s nothing spectacular
but the real annoying part about it all is AMD’s claims of beating the 13600K and 13700K and using crap first-party data
so a lie then
The senior engineer on my team is driving me insane. I never know when he's randomly going to get mad at me for inconsequential shit.
We've been troubleshooting this issue for like 2-3 days now. I've been in all the calls with them actively troubleshooting it, etc.
Now suddenly he is concerned I said I added a query template to the tool during the troubleshooting process
"That's a production system!"
if you're gonna have first-party data you can like
Bruh... I added a query filter. It doesn't change any data and it doesn't even run automatically. It's simply a possible query you can run if selected...
Use a reasonable GPU
but nah they gotta cherry-pick data to make it look good
I like how Hardware Unboxed got flak for using a 5950X to substitute a 5900XT prior to release
though anyone with two brain cells can figure out that they're virtually the same CPU
gotta love that
all this does is make you not wanna speak up
yeah it's been brought up a few times but Gelsinger is deeply religious and does this every Sunday
I just think it's poorly timed in the midst of Intel's latest nose dive
??????
rtx 4070
rtx 4070 (slow)
rtx 4070 ti
rtx 4070 super
rtx 4070 ti super
cant they just... not?
or come up with more numbers to use? or anything?
Ironically enough, them trying to limit liability by being dodgy is exactly what is killing their market cap
When it could actually be worse: At least 14th gen are compatible with the 12th and 13th gen motherboards, so they could even send a 14700K to replace say a 13700K if they didn't have stocks of them anymore and they wouldn't have to provide a new motherboard to users
4gb 4090's
dont give them any ideas now
thats all I need
I have this old GTX 970 4GB VRAM meme I need to find it lmao
I think we need more tech CEOs posting prayer
i think my ISP is nuking my network
literally exactly 21:00 at my local time the internet broke
aand it died again
and back again
My ISP does maintenance exactly at 23:30 to 23:45
And it’s usually only down for like 2 or 3 minutes, it’s down the full time if they’re doing any actual service
I wasnt even aware this was going on
Does anyone here need to take breaks from electronics or is it just me?
not me i am looking at a screen all day long xD
electronics is my job
https://vxtwitter.com/envinyon/status/1820510037007118378
okay this is actually extremely funny
greater context of this scripture is avoiding temptations, lying, and overall just avoiding making bad decisions that negatively effect your life
which makes it really, really funny

Me and my 12 hour screen time on my phone
Mine used to be 10 hours like every day bc I had screen auto turn off set to never and fell asleep watching YT
But it made me look insane if people saw my screen time
lol 😄
Sounds good
Finally have a new pc. Would getting some adapters to get any files I wanna keep out of these babies be out of the question?
these are the hdd and ssds from the laptop that the motherboard burnt out on
well, idk if it burnt out or what
Yeah you can buy external drive caddy’s or drive sata adapters if you didn’t wanna hook it up internally
wondering if there are different adapters that i'd need
cause like idk if there's a specific adapter i'd need for this hdd and a specific adapter for the ssds
like if i'm correct i can get an HDD caddy pretty cheap
The one on the left is SATA and the 2 on the right are M.2 NVME drives. I know they make SATA ones I’m sure Nvme ones exist as well
The Sabrent USB 3.2 Tool-Free Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs is the perfect solution for your enclosure needs!FEATURES:CONVENIENCE: 100% Tool-Free, quickly install and remove SSDs without any tools.DESIGN: Ultra-slim Aluminum case with ABS frame. StarTech.com SATA to USB Cable - USB 3.0 to 2.5” SATA III Hard Drive Adapter - External SATA USB Converter for SSD/HDD Data Transfer - Black (USB3S2SAT3CB)
I can get a dock that's 27 bucks but there's also an adapter cable for like 8 bucks
either way looks like ordering drive docks off of amazon is infinitely cheaper than going to best buy
'sides it never hurt to learn stuff on the hardware side of things. hell maybe some day knowing how hardware works could get my mom out of a bind when she's.... well, older than she is already
yeah its a good skill to have for sure
if your PC supports multiple NVME drives and it has an open slot you could always just install 1 at a time and transfer what you need if you wanted to save some money
up to you though
Oh also the non-acer branded one is the OS drive
The acer branded one is what I had FFXIV on.
if you had an OS on it already and installed it natively Windows will probably show 2 versions of Windows and ask what one you wanna boot into, if you use the USB adapter it'll operate like any bog standard removable storage like an external HDD or flash drive etc.

Means i can show my dad that it's objectively cheaper to buy what i need and do it myself
i can vouch for these being solid af
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XMY49BM
but i use this cable for them
hey tech nerds any tech in the 20 to 40 dollar range yall would recommend off amazon
nothing, I don't want my house catching fire from random chinese shit dropshipped off alibaba
how does a laptop stand catch fire
not entirely sure, but I wouldn't be surprised
i mean it just depends on what you'd find use in
you can get some decent mice and usb mics in that price range sometimes. or a usb hub. or a small ssd or something of that sort. sd card.
maybe a nice wireless charger?
there are also some neat tiny screens that get into that price range
Moondrop Space Travel if for earbud stuff, actually decent pair with ANC
Some few chifi earbuds can fit in that range (check crinacle stuff)
Cheap graphic tablets
I do have a lotta stuff at that price range tbh
God I wish we would just ditch the earbud form factor
I want wireless headphones in the vein of the p3 style ones
me SEA
we have bikes and must have helmets
earbuds only mannn
Headphones are not as convenient as earbuds for what most people use them for
Also there’s like way more cheap headphone options than earbuds so I’m not sure why you’d want them to ditch it anyway
Intel’s crashing CPU warranty extends to OEM models. If you’re having crashing issues you can contact Intel if you purchased a boxed CPU, or your OEM or system builder otherwise. Intel has also released a list of CPUs that are getting an extended warranty https://t.co/XqSRyRjpw7
this picture reminds me of what a clusterfuck intel CPU naming schemes are
14900
14900F
14900KF
14900K
14900KS

oh right i forgot the 14900T

14900KMS would be an accurate CPU naming scheme right now

Ah yes. My CPU on the list
another day, another reminder I got lucky buying 12th gen instead of waiting 3 months for 13th gen
another day... oh look ma I'm there!
Dem, same, I was lucky, dodged a bullet bc cheapened out
sigh
"people nowadays don't want to work anymore"
it's why I'm not eager to switch to tech nor game studio
if not a tech company lays me off then a studio
I like how silent quitting is just working the 9-5 and not doing anything extra
And that’s a problem ig
Not working unpaid overtime is anti American according to certain billionaires
Not working unpaid overtime is standard in the UK is the same
It’s expected
Idk anyone who actually gets paid for overtime at all here ngl
Overtime is taxed more in the US
It’s dumb but you can get some crazy money doing overtime
I have a friend who does IT at a company and they actually pay him over time for after hours stuff and he already makes 35 an hour
yeah overtime is more expensive, that's why businesses try to fuck you over into doing it unpaid
it's double free labour for them essentially
Yes
I’ve worked at companies that don’t care and had some outrageous paychecks with them
Like making 24 an hour and getting overtime on top of it and working 5 12’s lol
I just haven’t heard anyone actually get paid overtime here lol
If u get compensated like u seem to some places in the US then it’s fair
Not a bad option from people I know who do it
yeah my normal pay im taxed at like 16% my overtime pay is taxed at 40%
It’s just being friendly
I wonder if thats with EMC
i wonder how many unemployed people are in total now just because they are laid off
like, these layoffs easily can turn people homeless if there are that many people needing jobs all at the same time
yea the blood bath continues
i would say, if you're getting a degree, don't let job prospects sway you too much
And talking with some ppl I know it’s not a bad gig now
Yuh
I would rather have a degree in something interesting that I would enjoy doing
Which UX is
like heeding caution is good, and trying to become a generalist and soak up as much knowledge about different new things in college is very important
like especially for people who want to study CS
because the basic cs curriculum is just a skeleton framework
you learn your algorithms and OSes and other stuff
then you need to pick up places to apply it
Don’t people treat the bare minimum bog standard computer science degrees as a red flag
like do you want to get into scientific computing and help work in a bio research lab or something
One of my friends hired a guy and that dude lasted 2 days
or work on embedded computing and make robots/spaceships
or work on data science and ai stuff
my uni had a whole lot of classes that were basically applied cs/ee
and a lot of people did miss out on that stuff
Had a 4 year degree and barely knew anything and it was an entry level IT gig helping with setting up company computers and what not
a lot of people double majored cs and business
which I thought was foolish
but their goal was to get an mba so
-shrug-
ehhhhh
but it still leaves you short on applied cs
yea there's also background, right
like somebody who comes into cs and has never used a computer before
vs someone who's been writing programs and websites since they were like 10 or something
(I know at least one really good programmer who never used a computer beyond basics before they went to college lol)
Half of the people in the industry it sounds like, got their two year degree cause they were told they’d get paid a lot
that may be the case
and to be fair, there's a wide gradient of skill needed sometimes
like I could see someone with basic knowledge taking a code bootcamp and getting good at javascript and landing a solid job
that's like the cs equivalent of becoming a phlebotomist
or a nurse aid or whatever
My friend who runs the IT department at a power company is just constantly ranting about the inability of all the entry level hires to follow directions, apparently most of the ones that apply have never had a job before
Yuh
The reason I want a UX degree is because it’s one of those things that would eventually be something I could do as a contractor possibly
Cause most companies don’t need a full time UX designer
So much for the CHIPS Act
Dell doesnt make processors
My brain saw "tech giant" and "layoffs" and my brain immediately saw it as Intel.
finally bought myself a soundbar and wow, what a difference from the tiny speakers in my tv
some places even accept online certificates, esp UI/UX side, but ye for something really deep early, a degree is nice
some free courses are also worth taking if you don't mind not having certificate
this is real
in the US we have Wester Governors but idk if they are a good online college, my uncle got his cybersec degree there that was required by IBM
but he already knew everything so he got his done in half a year
cause WGU lets you choose how long you spend on a degree, half a year to a few years
you can Coursera iirc?
thats true
the only thing is I have zero knowledge of programming or any sort of thing related
and I need motivation other than self motivation (like a hard deadline) to get me to do school stuff lmao
big time procrastinator
lmao relatable
I would join the procrastinator association of america but i keep putting it off
tthats a real thing btw
The Procrastinators' Club of America is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and describes its purpose as promoting "the philosophy of relaxation through putting off until later those things that needn't be done today." It was established in 1956 as a joke by Les Waas who eventually registered it as a business in Philadelphia in 1966. Waas remai...
holy s it's real
Because most unis are diploma mills these days, on top of K-12 education also rubber stamping graduation so their funding doesn't get cut, so you get a lot of ppl heading into the workforce that have no practical experience.
it would be cool if we had a federalized intern system for high school kids to work at registered companies with mentors that actually are good at teaching kids work ethic
I got lucky and just had a full time job when I was 16
Mix in a smattering of helicopter parents, economy where entry level jobs for HS and college students are often taken by adults instead, socializing online instead of in person so they don't have experience dealing with people, etc.
I dropped out and did online
dem you're lucky
I went back to college a few years back after being out over 10 years and it was crickets in any class where the teacher would ask for discussion or opinions
Nobody wanted to speak up about anything ever.
it's even worse if in asia
asian schools are like, passive learning
I do most of my social interacting online but ive worked with enough people and done customer service to be normalized to the average population :)
meanwhile there are many works that you could do w/o a deg at all which downplay the degree
I kid u not, I went little to no training in IT but can assemble and diagnose PCs like nothing lololol
mostly cause all my friends irl are like me and work a 9-5 and have to do other stuff to stay afloat
tfw cs/social engineering is a legit skill nowaday
yes
idk if I should get a UX degree
what should I really aim for?
@odd sand what do you think would be the most useful type of degree to aim for going into the CS space these days
Hard to say. Something like UX is a specialty, so it could be good or bad depending on the business climate.
web? app? game? that's the point, UX is HELLA HUGE
obviously a degree doesnt do much in the way of experience
Tbh, I'm strongly of the opnion that the best people in general tech work (Not like giga-deep low-level programmers), self-train in general.
but I have an uncle at IBM who said he would help me get experience if need be
(he said hed get me an internship if I wanted)
I'd say in general, most companies don't appreciate UX enough. Probably only the silicon valley types actually pay much attn to it
so large already entrenched companies or startups/small numbers companies
I did went thru a good dozen OS/distro nuking for breakfast
got 2 Tails USB readied last night
its outrageous the numbers those small headcount companies push
I think cybersecurity is still growing/data science
people in the industry for 8 years making 150k a year base but then they get a 400k performance bonus
oh ye, in addition to UX, if you can afford any psychology crash course, do et, free or paid are fine
So maybe go with a general CS degree, minor in business and take some electives for network security/analyst stuff.
that's also a nice income every tax season lol

I could do cybersec cause
my uncle is a team lead at IBM for the Cybersec R&D
been doing it... 15 years
I'm going to be biased, but I think logging tools/SIEM products like Splunk or Datadog are in big demand if you get some certs for like Splunk power user and/or enterprise admin
also recommend knowing tax stuff so peepo come to you and ask for plugging their number for calc
It's funny you say that, because IBM just sold off Qradar
dem thicc profile
yea im not really sure whats going on there
he says he still works for them
but originally he was working for his friend at his company that IBM bought and merged
he worked on Watson and a few other hush projects for government
not sure if hes part of the main department or if hes doing contract stuff
he makes absurd money so I would assume his team is not in the normal group of cybersec people
Nice thing with Splunk is they have a free license, so you can spin up a container with it in minutes and there is lots of documentation online and I know people have courses they put up on Udemy etc.
so what is splunk
It's a logging platform with tons of bespoke apps/addons bolted onto it
a CISCO company
They were recently bought out by Cisco in the past year
Splunk Inc. is an American software company based in San Francisco, California, that produces software for searching, monitoring, and analyzing machine-generated data via a web-style interface. Its software helps capture, index and correlate real-time data in a searchable repository, from which it can generate graphs, reports, alerts, dashboards...
At it's heart though it's a platform to collect logs
They offer a SIEM tool for cybersecurity monitoring, ITSI for general monitoring, analytics, SOAR is playbook automation
also folks, real question, is a BA in cybersecurity worth it? I'm thinking getting a degree on coursera
Splunk is also used by Formula1 race cars for real-time metrics from the cars streamed to the paddock
wild
they do some wild stuff ya
Basically anything that can be turned into text logs, you can take that into Splunk and do stuff with it
I've only half joked about making mods for games that do text metrics and send that into Splunk and setup alerting
that seems crazy
IE: Poll when Darktide vendors turn over their item inventory and use the API to see what it is, record that into Splunk and send myself an SMS alert for items I'm looking for
That was a use-case I cooked up when I played a lot of Darktide
aka XIV Universalis
can splunk make assumptions using data its been fed
well
it should cause thats what you are using it for probably
I heard a couple years ago Splunk was hiring ppl fresh out of school for traveling installation ppl. They would train and you'd be making 250k after 2 years. Only issue is they're in SanJo/SFO area so that's $$$ for rent
WTF
I mean yea rent is high but
yeah
$$$ + tax man
You just have to be willing to be on the road 3 weeks per month I think
But you could do that for like 2-3 years and transition to something else and be set well
but prolly also utilities when you're on the road
Nice thing with a lot of cybersec is you can get remote positions
tho ofc having physical access is also nice if for sensitive works
I kinda wish I was on a commercial contract for work instead of govt, bc I'd totally get a travel visa for Japan and work remote from there for like 3 months or something
idk I probably shoulda done more when i was fresh 18
you can build your portfolio as well
I could still travel domestically though. I've considered trying to find an airbnb I could rent for a month in summer and go visit Colorado or something
gamejam/ludum dare, etc
one of my cousins went to one of those training camps for aircraft powerplant stuff and now hes 24 working on contract for Lockheed Martin at an airforce base making 120k a year after tax
Most people have no portfolio even as "fresh 22/23"
idk I have worked at a lot of places
thats my main thing
I just know how to adapt
I will jump head first into the deep end with shit
One thing that may not be obvious is spinning your life experiences into bullet points on the resume
true
eg: I was staff for Anime Central for 10 years. I put that on my resume bc by the last few years we were scheduling/managing 250 events for 30k people event.
I meant more that I wish I wasnt dumb and actually decided on something like a trade school
yeahhhh that thing sucks but people not like seeing too many words
I called it by their LLC name "Midwest Animation Promotion Society" instead of Anime Central, but still :)
lmfao
real
idk I know an excessive amount about cars
thats my main interest
ultimately I wanna do that but cant do that without money
and I also find computers interesting
so shrug
If you've ever done a hobby project and had to troubleshoot or make a project plan and execute on it
like my skill set is so fucking wild
I can use any shipping program currently in use, sell people shit, I know how to zinc plate and sand blast stuff, rebuild vintage cars
That could be a story to tell while interviewing. Ultimately for entry level they aren't going to expect much though, no matter what the job listing says.
Well, that can be a point then: Able to adapt and learn quickly.
idk I sold some shit for one of Jerry Seinfelds cars that one normally gets me through the interview good enough
Bc for any job you get, you're going to have to learn their tools and org environment
Working on classic cars requires being meticulous and detail oriented blah blah
people are very front with how they do things and whats acceptable and whats not
ye this is the shit I was working on everyday
brake calipers
i was quality control cause I did all the shipping on them plus customer service
the level of knowledge I got there was insane
I can tell you what year a porsche is just by the brakes
I have mega brain rot
or uh
the 911S "S" Calipers
aluminum brake calipers produced by Fuchs that were forged
these would take 12-18 hours of hand grinding to restore properly
galvanic corrosion would eat them
Speaking of brake calipers, I think I'm getting close to needing at least new front ones on my Stinger. At 40k miles now
That's what I meant
yuh
I bought it at 17k miles, so I dunno if they replaced the brakes then. I want to say they told me they didn't.
I'm not feeling any obvious shudder while braking off the highway though, so it's probably fine.
the 930 Turbo brake calipers are cool
Just dreading the cost bc I dunno if I want to try doing them myself. Never worked with Brembo/oversized brakes before
the aluminum casting back then was bad so they are very porous, so you have to cover them in vaseline and bake them, that is in original factory documentation lmfao
Only my shitbox Saturn I had before
brembos are easier than slider style calipers imo
monoblocks just require a pad slide out and then you can just hang the calipers from the strut and remove the rotor
plus unless your monoblock caliper is leaking you dont have to do anything on the caliper
Yeah that's what I did with the Saturn as well. Although you needed a c-clamp to push in the piston as well
brembo pistons are fully retracted when there is no pressure applied
Ah okay, nice.
slider styles use an adjustment mechanism so the pad makes proper contact
for all purposes the monoblock style caliper is superior to the slider but sliders are just as good when setup properly so shrug
its just brembo shit is expensive
Yeah...
cause its still all made in italy
so you are dealing with EU export taxes and what not
The alternative is my Saturn where China bought up all the OEM bearing makers, so I literally couldn't buy a good wheel bearing for it
I was replacing them every 15-25k miles...
wtf
thats wild
ive seen original factory wheel bearings on a 1973 911 still kicking in 2022
car had 180k miles too so it should have had them replaced but it never did cause it never had a problem
Yeah my Mazda6 I had after that, I didn't have to replace pads for like 60k miles and I think I had to replace the front right wheel bearing at like 100k
yea thats about right
My two banes with the Saturn were the wheel bearings and burning oil bc their head gaskets were known problematic
So by the time I got rid of it, I was adding a quart every 500mi
Started out needing a quart every 1500mi at like 150k mi, then every 1000mi at 200k, and I sent it to the junkyard at 240k and it was 500mi per quart
Granted, I could have rebuilt the motor well before then but
I couldn't diagnose a water intrusion problem, so there was some rust in the frame etc. so I was just done iwth it
also I hate reading brake discussion threads
I know too much to read dumb shit
people talking about cracking in drilled rotors, they should not crack if you fucking brake properly
daily commuting you should be soft on brakes, driving hard you should brake hard to soft
I mean it was a plastic car, so if I wouldn't have had that water issue, it still looked very good for 200k+ mi. Driven full time for pizza delivery in midwest winters with all that salt etc and somehow the underbody still had the original powder coating on the frame
your brake pedal allows you to modulate how the car is controlled, same with the throttle, proper control is essential
Haha my friend annoys tf out of me with how he brakes
you also never brake through a corner, you do all your braking before you turn
He does the whole firm stop shit where your head bobs for a moment as you come to a complete stop
cause braking while car is experiencing weight transfer can just cause you to lose all your grip
blegh
I drive for fun for like 8 hours every weekend and have done so for like 4 years
in the canyons here in the rockies
I am burdened with the knowledge of driving fast but smoothly
He says I "roll stop signs" which tbf sometimes I do when there is nobody around, but what he thinks of as rolls is I softly come to a complete stop and the moment that happens I'm accelerating away again
most people I get in the car with drive so poorly it takes a lot in me not to say something
yuh
this is how I drive my stick
When I first moved to Cali I took Kit Carson Pass in April
I keep the car rolling ever so slightly so I can just give a tad of throttle and then let the clutch out
my car has a performance transmission so driving it smooth is not in my ability yet, specifically from a stop
That was so much fun. It was me and this Subaru just bombing the pass at like 80-85mph
It was April so you still had the walls of snow on either side
Just don't buy the cheapest. All rotors are about the same. They all come out of China these days. I'd get decent pads. They're more important. reddit is full of idiots
rotors are as important as pads cause if its a bad rotor compound you will never actually bed your brakes properly and your car wont be able to stop good ever
Yeah even with my shitbox, I always got sport pads and rotors bc I knew I would be riding it pretty hard doing delivery
also most rotors arent even out of china its only OE shit
if you buy aftermarket rotors for your euro car they're probably made in europe somewhere
asian car? probably made in the country of origin
It won't have any impact on how well you can brake though. It's the tires that stop the car. If you can engage the ABS your brakes are doing as much stopping as they can.
this is not entirely true
most modern tire compounds very much outperform shitty brakes
so you should only worry about the limit of tires if you have full on 6 piston brembos and 4 piston brembos on the rear that can stop the car in half the time a standard camry can
and then you have something like a Porsche/AMG/Audi RS
Imagine going thru here with 5m snow walls on either side heh
my 150 dollar a piece tires are so good Ive never had tire slippage even driving at the limit but also I know when my car is going to bite me so I dont go past that point cause it makes you drive slower so shrug
that would be fun
I've been up to Mt Evans twice as well. That's also a fun drive, but both times it was off-season so I could only get to echo lake, not the summit
Funny story: On that cross country trip my mom warned me to be careful, never know what dangerous ppl you might run into etc. and I'm like mom it's fine this is the middle of nowhere, nobody is out here to do anything
I went to echo lake to look around as the summit was closed and there was a news van in the parking lot of the campground that was closed for the season there
Turns out some lady had made death threats to some schools in Denver and then drove out there and walked off into woods and shot herself a short time earlier
So of course my mom is like SEE! SEE WHAT I MEAN!
lmfao
Whereabouts are you in CO then? I'm contracted to an agency operating out of Denver
Ah okay. So you drive up to Grand Junction and back then I take it
CO is too expensive or I woulda found a job out there already
eh sorta
Do you get to enjoy the wonders of BEAVER every weekend? /s
utah has a large portion of the rockies so I only go up to colorado for extended trips
Oh, are the mountains along 15/89 still considered the Rockies?
89 looks like it would be a lot of fun being in the valley between the mountains. Reminds me of the drive along I-395 in CA
Only annoying thing about mountain driving is getting stuck behind slow traffic that won't use the gd turnouts
mfer you have like 10 ppl behind you, see that sign that says pull over for faster traffic? DO IT
I only ever got to travel Big Sur once at full speeds. I was headed north just before sundown, so it has less traffic than heading the other way. Was able to bomb it in like 90mins for the 75mi route
Have to be careful though, bc you can't understeer or you might hit ppl coming around the outside
thats why you dont go fast in a bad car
thats why so many accidents happen
people try going fast in an economy car
you dont do that
They have a couple crazy fun back highways in Cali if you hit them at the time of day/week there isn't a lot of traffic:
I got to take 155 shortly after they had repaved the entire thing, so it was super smooth too
Kernville was a fun place too. They have a river going thru town that ppl hang out and swim and do canoe rides thru, and upstream is rapids so the rafters will start up there and end in town.
Gives me vibes of a less crowded version of St George maybe?
Although I've only ever driven thru St George, never stopped there to know exactly what it's like
I'm thinking in getting a BA CS, but is any CS folk could review/recommend on the experience in the program in general?
I got a general CS degree, so I can't help you there
eh I'm sẻaching for just bachelor so should be fine lol
yeah I found a program with 4kUSD in tuition (but more traditional uni) in India, hence the price, and a 18kUSD one in US
which criteria should I check if for CS degree?
both are online btw
As far as what general skills would be useful: Something like MS-101/102 certs, although they recently deprecated the classic versions of them
Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate
That is the closest thing I can find to the original MS-100-102 courses. Now they're focused on O365 and Azure
eg: General OS proficiency for Windows and Linux, familiarity with Azure and AWS

A SIEM tool like Splunk SOAR or Qradar
And possibly knowing a bit about PowerBI automation. Really depends on if you're looking to get a job at a place that uses Azure or is more focused on AWS or on-prem
I do know a gist of PowerBI at old workplace tho
Speaking of automation: At least a little experience with python, bash, and bat files.
A lot of CS tools have automations or data collection using scripts

How much you need that stuff as a Tier1 analyst probably varies depending on the maturity of the org you join
atm I only aim for a general deg for some odd jobs and for the sake of my resume since my current one is iffy
If you aren't in India, I would probably shy away from a degree thru them.
oh the tuition over there is only 4k to me (special listed country)
They're broadly viewed as diploma mills where most people cheat and have low skills
hmmmm fair, yeah
That said, plenty of Indian devs still get hired to jobs so maybe I'm talking out of my ass
like, hell, that tuition fee is even cheaper than in my place
I will say that in general, those degrees seem to lead to ppl who do performative work and aren't good at troubleshooting and problem solving
Dunno if that's just the culture or tied to the quality of the degree however
I get stories from my friend whose company employs like a dozen indian devs remotely and some of the facepalm stories about them are wild
He says your chances of a competent Indian dev are like 1 in 5, and those usually quit after 2-3 years to pivot to a higher paying job then heh
well that's also their work culture as well
atm I plan to get a BA just for the sake of having a degree, the actual skills like troubleshooting I'd learn w my own pace
tfw I learned how to handle linux in these years more than an IT student fiddling it in a year but then I just nuke things if it is too headache to fix
CS just seems daunting cause there’s so much to learn
I would like to learn a language on my own time but I would rather not learn Java cause I’ve been told I would smash my head into a wall with it
Also from my basically zero understanding, don’t languages work off of a logic that they adhere too so understanding a language requires understanding what makes it tick basically
well, that, yeah
I'm getting a few free language courses to get the gist of each of them while working on my own short visual novel lol

guess i really do have to save up the 200$ for the fucking nvidia shield because somehow its the only device powerful enough to not only stream shit but also encode 1440p/60 video streams from PC

it reminds me of a tello thingy whatever that was called

it looks like that google tv thing lmao
i get the vibe it's a google 'ecosystem' shit that only works with google's tv service, too
at that point you might as well buy a mini pc for the same price, should get more power, no?
yeah but i get power that i dont need and i lose the comfort of a handy remote and instead need to get a mouse and keyboard

We have brand new ...
set plex up, now I just drag stuff to it over lan, watch shit using the app on my tv or via browser on other devices
yeah but my primary use case for these is watch streams on crunchy & twitch and decode video signals i sent over via sunshine & moonlight for gaming
the latter is the only issue because none of the usual devices is powerful enough for 1440p/60 or, in apples case, doesnt support more than 60hz
“It’s not Intel” is certainly a bar
oh no, not again
thats sad
oof
i feel like the x3d cpus that will eventually release wont be much better either
makes this thread even funnier
well, 50-60w less than the 7700x is quite neat though
Someone said the 5700X3D and 5800X3D are the GTX 1080 Ti of CPUs
oh my fucking god
that’s unironically true

it is so fucking funny

"It's not Intel" is the highest praise Zen 5 can get lol
I’m looking through more reviews and Jay and der8auer are reporting stability issues (of the non-degrading kind) with the pre-release BIOS
Tom’s Hardware is a weird outlier because they’re not reporting stability issues

I kid u not, it is
Gud shite CPU for a decade if not keen to upgrade ngl
AM4 DDR4 is dirt cheap now
x2 FFXIV FPS :3
nvm, I cancelled it. The shop feels like it won't do the warranty well enough if push comes to shove. I rather buy from somewhere that I can physically access instead :/
I get paranoid easily 😦
hm... RGB fan for your gaming smartphone 😄
that's exactly the thing I was looking for /s
I noticed when looking for a mobo for when I eventually upgrade that right now a lot of brands haven't put AGESA 1.2.0.0 bios up (so it's possible to be running on bare minimum compatibility)
edit: also a bunch of recent b650 boards are unobtainable. I was eyeing a asrock steel legend but it's discontinued.
Xilinx Acquisition: The Secret Weapon Everyone's sleeping on the Xilinx deal. This isn't just another boring acquisition - it's AMD's ticket to dominating adaptive computing and edge AI.
Interesting, too bad I can only read half because the other half is paid
"Our investigation highlights the ‘don't ask for permission’ ethos technology companies have when it comes to scraping massive amounts of copyrighted content into datasets for training some of the most valuable AI models in the world."
So re-evaluating my thoughts on Zen 5: I think the problem right now is that no one is willing to admit that CPUs are Good Enough™️ and we’ve been complaining about power draw for years
Like yeah it’s not a very flashy upgrade over Zen 4 but there also has to be a point where CPU performance plateaus
I think Zen 5 being a more efficient architecture and not breaking down and degrading were achieved at the very least
anyway Zen 5 is fine and not being pushed to 95c is good
i was going to say 'so it's crap because the defective intel chips outperform it at a particular game?' but then I noticed the amd 5700s also outperform it lol
I also think AMD being effectively the only option for current gen is bad
for now
PISS
why does every CS bachelors now have a full thing on AI
is it really that common in software development
idk
it looks like Western Governors is gonna be the only viable online university for CS :/
they do offer the most classes tho
Well, it's hot stuff rn, and ngl assistant AI is somewhat useful if not hallucinated
Ngl, that's a lot to cover for a BA degree
I forgot how much bios updates are pain in the rear

If I have 5 SSDs (4 full and 1 m.2) do I need to turn on intel RAID?
Probably not for this
But eventually I wanna create a personal NAS server and there I think using RAID is good
Also god I'm tired of Microsoft
I don't want your personalized ads, I don't want your onedrive, your teams, your cortana, your copilot nor your xbox subscription
And no, I don't want a Microsoft office package either
Just run TrueNas, watch a few tutorials
Okay
I plan to set up a NAS, either at my granny's place or my aunt's place
What would you suggest for a low energy consumption NAS?
I may go for SSDs over spinny for noise, space and power tho
lmao it's such an open ended question tbh. Tons of videos on YouTube and stuff. Key search phrase is TrueNas or Unraid
TrueNas I usually rec for beginners
my first Nas was a shitty optiplex
but if you need like transcoding and stuff might need something more powerful for example
Yeeee would prefer to do it when I have my own place tho
I would get a bunch of used hardware and slap one together as per usual
Atm I'm thinking either repurpose my stuff (AMD Cezanne APU) or commit a Pi
I hate pis
Why tho
not powerful enough for anything and over rated lol
Plus fucking around with I/O
expenses etc
Well, fair tho, it's k for some funsi but the expense is oomph
Like I'm an embedded engineer, PI to me is like....the thing that everyone likes but I know better so I dislike
they are overrated af
but when they were new and you could get them for $20-30 they were handy
especially if you're using a53s anyway LOL
i have 2 and I can't really think of a use case where i'd use one again
even for the use cases that I use them for, they're terrible xD
yeaaaa
i have a retroflag gpi (looks like an og gameboy) and it uses a pi zero w
and uhhhh
the form factor is atrocious LOL
and running it off AA batteries LOL
I heard nas, I have many opinions xD
Imo, for a small nas, an apu is the way to go, it gives you a couple transcode threads, it’s more of a full system so expandable is a thing
here i was thinking the answer is always an old thin client
lol jk
big nas requires a surprising amount of ram
Yeeeah, my quarter pb nas is running out with 128g
I’m probally going to have to upgrade the core nas to 512 eventually
It needs more cpus and more ram, but not in a position to upgrade her atm
tell me
what do you feel is the stupidest thing you've spent money on in recent history?
i think for me it was the steering wheel/pedal racing setup xD i'm glad i bought cheap-ish ones
Not much, I’ve been slamming everything into saving up for my move
5 years? That long would be any number of things
The stupidest would probally be either the full Hotas set, or the peleton
Probally the peleton
Nah, sold it and went back to lifting weights for awhile xD
ahhh ok
i bought ring fit adventure and actually played it for a while. then something happened and i stopped
i tried again a few months ago and got it going for like 2 weeks
I’m not big into cardio as it is, gimme heavy things to pick up and put down
and something happened again x_X
I need more space for that and be
*vr
Next house will have a dedicated vr room, one way or another
tbh what I want for my next house
my list of requirements is really simple hahahaha
- one floor, no split level, no steps anywhere. 2. living room in the front with a nice front window. 3. a normal size shower without some ridiculous huge threshold because out here the showers are often tiny and stupid
- air conditioning WOULD BE NICE FOR ONCE FFS
I need a ton of shop space ofc, but I’m likely to just build a new house/prefab that’s close to what I want to live in
No house is really gonna be what I want, so being able to live somewhere mediocre while I build the new place is key
If imma spend 50-100k remodeling it, I’d rather just build something new and really make it mine
ye
i'm just gonna keep paying rent for this place until the landlord asks us to leave
it's a piece of crap but the other houses available are even crappier crap and they cost another $1000-1500 a month

Is the melting connector thing for 4090s just the adapters, or has it been happening with actual 12vHP cables that don 't need an adapter too?
it happened to both
Both but majority is just people not putting it in properly
The cable sucks but if u put it in properly ur most likely going to be fine
Failure rate of the cable itself is still super low just unnecessary design change and still worse than standard power cables were
iirc it has been revised once since the big melting issues as well
Oh
I saw a 4090 Open Box at my Best Buy listed as "Excellent" for $400 off that would fit in my case and I my PSU came with a native PCIE 5.0 connection and cable so I was wondering if I'd be good
You’re probably fine
At $400 off I’d get it but it’s up to u to decide whether u need it
Lots of 4090 owners and the amount of issues are very small considering that
Anecdotally I have the cable because I have a 4070ti and haven’t had it come loose once still after 1.5 years

AMD is doing a great job at capturing that spark in a glass bottle LMAO
who is this product for
and who tf would buy a shitty slow 6 core CPU in 2024
for almost 300 dollars
what a scam
@deep sapphire @potent arrow rate these MOPAR welds
what even is that, a cross member?
Yes

Stamped aluminum
It’s the rear member that just holds the plastic bumper to the car
Which is mounted into the crash member iirc
They both do crash stuff but that member is way cheaper than the actual crash one
The 9700x uses like 60w less than the 7700x and is faster outside of gaming
9600x is considerably more mediocre
yeah
They’re not terrible but they’re not great at msrp
But I doubt they stay at msrp very long since it’s AMD
The 9700X is "okay" but when you remove the power limits it becomes a much better chip
Yeah the 9700x actually has OC headroom
Why didn’t they do this from the start and advertise that
But in productivity it’s already up to the 7900x or 7950x sometimes at 60w which is still pretty good

They should! No one should have to scour the internet on how to remove power limits and overclock a 9700X
All the press is shitting on it instead of showing that
Yeah idk why
In the tech spot benchmarks online u can see it’s decent in productivity already
Catching up to last gen’s top end CPUs
It just has nothing in terms of gaming stock
I’m more excited to see actual OC benchmarks tho
I think overall good cpu and just hope price comes down a bit
It would be amazing if u could finally recommend AMD over Intel even for overclocking lmfao
AMD has put themselves in a predicament when gamers know it’s better to just wait for X3D lmao
yeah but intel 'OC' weirdos didnt care about gaming anyway so if they can do that its still cool
9700x matching the 7900x but at 60w is nice
And if Intel didn’t have these problems I still think the 700K SKUs are the best middle ground between productivity and gaming
the 7700x was as good as t he 13700k was
14700K added 2 more e cores and was clocked higher it typically did better in multi core workloads by a considerable amount
the reason intel benchmarks come off better with a lot of places is they used 6400mt ram as well
bc am5 wouldnt be stable at the time
now it can
14700k was the same price as the 7900x so
AMD told HUB that 6000 is the absolute max they should be using
Anything higher doesn’t benefit them
people have used 6400 and got better results now
outside of reviewers
7700x is cheaper as well
and the 7900x was 14700k price
and better or equal
but with more P Cores as well
the last intel gen i commend is 12th
12900k is pretty good used and 12400 and 12600k are good new
looks like intel micro code updates are going out for Z790
Z690 at a later date
so I gotta wait
😒
yeah
12700k gang still feeling like a solid buy
Only insane people own those
but i own one :(
11th gen was a sad gen
11th gen had little to no increase
there was 0 reason to get 11th gen when you could get 10th gen for basically the same performance and cheaper
Yes again like I said people bought 14th recently
Exactly the same stupid decision just bc bigger number
alderlake was a genuinely good CPU
plus supposedly they had extremely high failure rates
intel is prone to these issues
Intel has been falling off for a while and alder lake was just a fluke fr
z590 only
My statement stands 🔫
the duality of man
i couldn't make this shit up if i tried lmao
i bought another usb-c to hdmi adapter that promises better mac support with a firmware update
so I plug it into my mac work laptop and of course it won't drive my stupid fucking samsung monitor at full 7680x2160
no surprise
afaik anything other than an m2 max/m3 pro won't support it in mac land because apple's a fucking asshole
supposedly the firmware update sidesteps that
but the firmware update requires a windows machine
so I plug it into my desktop and boot into windows
well windows doesn't like this usb-c adapter lmao 😄
basically it just sits on the windows boot logo and that's that lmao
windows actually starts up fine
oh nvm
this one's actually my own fault
i disabled the onboard graphics because when onboard+gpu are present steam takes forever to launch
HOLY SHIT THE FIRMWARE WORKED
I can actually run my monitor at 7160x2180 on my work mac with the adapter now
fuuuuuck sweeeet!!!!
lmao it lets me drive it at 8k as well
surprised the monitor accepts 8k lmao
hnng this is so nice
no more fiddling with settings yay
IT BETTER BE THINNER TOO
just give it 4 usb-c plugs and make the thing the size of a pcmcia card lmao
AYO SMOL BOI
How the hell do these things not combust from heat buildup?
I don't see how you can pack that much power in such a small space and not have it explode. Where's the cooling? Where do they put the power supply? How does it get airflow? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!
coincidentally i realized that my gpu/motherboard get along better with my 57" monitor when connected via hdmi
so I guess i'll be retiring the cable matter dp kvm lol
what, mac minis?
Yes.
the apple silicon ones don't really produce heat lol
and they're mostly empty space inside
that said
at one point you could buy a mac mini with the exact same chassis and an i7 8700 jammed inside
oh wut
This model is powered by a 14 nm, 64-bit "8th Generation" Intel Mobile Core i7 "Coffee Lake" (I7-8700B) processor which includes six independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip. Each core has a dedicated 256k level 2 cache, shares 12 MB of level 3 cache, and has an integrated memory controller (dual channel).
wonder if an 8700b is undervolted
they did have a decent size vent
but it's just an exhaust vent lol. idk how they took air in
the bottom cap that goes over that is solid plastic
OH
The air inlet on the Mac Mini (2018) is located on the bottom. If you look closely at the circular plastic disc, you'll see that there's a gap between that and the metal part of the computer. This is the air inlet!
still funny because people would toss nh-d15s on the 8700k LOL
huh- neat.
to be fair the person using a nh-d15 on an 8700k would find the temperatures that 8700b in the mac mini would probably run... scandalous
what's an nh-d15?
a very large noctua cpu cooler
never held one but from the pictures i'd guess it's like a mac-mini-sized-cube LOL
oh jeez
Reminded of that early futurama episode where Amy has a phone that's like 2 inches by 1 inch big (That was when phones were getting smaller and smaller shortly before smartphones came out)
hehe 😄
i liked the tiny phones, but you can get tiny smartphones tooooo
but they're kinda crap
Doesn't get much more of a wonder device than when the StarTAC was first released:
oh baby
they were so cool
the original ones were especially cool
they also had a dock so you could charge them like cordless phones
I remember being a kid and seeing them at the store and being amazed they worked while being so small
When you had something this size as a home phone:
Had really good range for it's time, ngl. As a test I walked down the road with it and was a solid 100m from the base station before it started cutting out.
god it is so fucking stupid that Youtube won't let you change the thumbnail on shorts
a good thumbnail makes so much difference and I always have shit luck with the auto-generated one
there is just no reason not to allow it
fine guess ill make a tiny edit to the video tonight and reupload it a third time and hope for a better thumbnail this time

Alright so tech folks;
A few days ago I started getting errors while using my browser that said they were possibly related to memory/install issues where the page or the browser would crash and restart.
I also started having my GPU program (Adrenalin) and my fan/RGB (iCue) program either not starting at launch properly or not fully working without having to quit and restart then.
My CPU (7800x3D) also started randomly having the temp spike from like 55 to 73/83 while just using the internet or doing minor things like opening Steam.
Then a couple of my games would crash either during gameplay or when trying to exit.
I followed MS's troubleshooting and tried to run the Windows Mem Diagnostic, but it crashed. I tried it again but it reported no issues. I Then went into Safe Mode, did the whole SFC/DSKCHK thing which reported nothing. Just to be safe I used DDU to uninstall my GPU drivers and did a fresh reinstall and update.
For a day it seemed fine but the browser crashes came back, and then thus morning while trying to play some CP2077 my comp freaks out, the lights on stuff turn red and iCue says it's in Failsafe mode because the CPU is overheating. It doesn't crash and kept running everything but I just held the power button force shutdown.
Any ideas?
what cooler do you have on your cpu
have you enabled ECO mode for your CPU in the bios?
A corsair 360 AIO
well have you checked that your cooler works properly
also
enable ECO mode for your CPU in the bios
Its been working fine for months
Okay, let's go with the hypothetical and say that doesn't work - what would be next?
if the cpu is overheating then either your cooler came loose or the pump died or something
it's not unheard of for the pump to die, but corsair coolers usually have 5 year warranties, so there's at least that
what the fuck hahaha

that's unfortunately how you get clicks
Yeah I mean just compared to the Intel headlines that are actually mostly just the problem
Honestly this sounds like a day that ends in Y? This requires physical access to hardware and Intel's issues are much more serious due to the fact that:
- They have been known for at least two years but have not been publicly disclosed them until the last few months
- Intel does not have a clear path for remediation and has screwed up customer support over the course of this bullshit
- Intel unwilling or unable to provide date code ranges has eroded a lot of trust and, frankly speaking, caused more FUD than a vulnerability that won't affect most AMD end users
I won't buy that
unless the article lies about hundreds of millions then I wouldn't call it an everyday thing
most of them are probably workplace computers at multimillion dollar companies but that doesn't mean users aren't affected
well as people already pointed out, you already need nearly full access to the machine to exploit this
hmm
In the grand scope of things, everything has a global exploit
Nothing is safe if you click a funny link
if u let a random person get access to any personal computer and do that i mean i just blame u at that point
Probably bc that looks to be like a 386 from 35 years ago
Looking at the wiki for Pentium and it's wild the perf bonuses they were getting in those early years.

crowdstrike already makes machines the safest possible way... unusable
lmao
so i'm going to home depot to buy another power tool today
.... and it's a ryobi this time because the milwaukee one costs too much lol
cheap tools or bust
I know race techs that use harbor freight shit exclusively lmao
cause they have to modify tools so much they just dont commit to buying nice ones
the ryobi one comes with a battery and my store has it on clearance for 134 lol
I kinda wanna carbon fiber out my car cause the E46 has been around so long its cheaper than OEM plastic moldings but also I dont wanna deal with damaged carbon fiber that I cant just duct tape
never know when ur gonna eat a rock inside the brake cooling duct and explode the carbon
and I coul;dn't go tool-only because the stupid milwaukee one is m12 instead of m18 so
hehehe
bruh
uhg
also carbon fiber looks like ass when used too much and like
idk
its cause its mostly fake carbon fiber
there was a guy at work that had a gla in that matte silvergrey paint job
and gloss instead of matte
and fake carbon fiber everywhere
that car reminded me of crocks
matte finish looks way better
those car-uvs always gave me 'crocs' vibes
but that one somehow did it worse because of the matte paint and the stick on cf
Mercedes Owners trying to make their new car look good (the design itself is bad there is no saving it)
there is a reason why the SLS is still so expensive
its just a retro car in modern skin
same with the Ford GT
oh true
whats kinda funny is that 911's come standard with chrome window trim but very few cars are sold with it
all of the look packages replace it with black trim
chrome window trim is fine
hell I think chrome looks better than black 90% of the time
but I have unconventional taste ya know 😉
i'm like an old man hahahahha
i like chrome and the polished aluminum look
997 911 in Macadamia Brown
there is a local one of these with chrome window trim and it makes it stand out way more
yuh
I have to replace the aluminum trim inside my car tho
its all scratched too deeply to buff out and also it gets SUPER hot in the summer
i burnt my arm on it
yeaaa
oh soon we will get the CSL's in the US
