signal fable
#

How's the general opinion on electric cars recently?

#

I don't have one but my idea was to change my 2007 Toyota Aygo with an electric car

#

But first I need to see what my needs are when I need to change my car

cold yacht
#

EV seems chill if you have a home charger

#

personally ill probably wont get a ev unless i can charge at home

wraith agate
#

I will probably never get one

#

Not just I can't afford it, but I live on the ninth floor of a ten story building

#

So no charge at home

signal fable
#

I don't have a home charger obviously but I saw that last year here where I live they put a lot of chargers

sly elk
#

I know a lot of battery packs do that, but I think newer EVs are starting to move away from that. Unfortunately that's a mixed bag when it comes to re-usability. Thing is, when it comes to Priuses and old Teslas, there are refurb people that can take apart the "bunch of AA battery" power packs and replace the non-functioning cells with functioning ones.

#

The "giant ass laptop battery" style packs are basically disposable, but I imagine they can be designed to be reused

#

I also think the giant ass hummer EV is really stupid

modest moss
#

my dad is in his 70s and drives an EV, has no home charging but he's happy enough

cold yacht
#

yeah hummer ev is just stupid

sly elk
#

but i think small/midsize car EVs are fine for a lot of use cases, and hybrids are great for a lot of use cases

cold yacht
#

like ill probably get a hybrid but not a full ev

sly elk
#

and really I think it's ok to drive something that isn't appropriate for your use case haha

cold yacht
#

a PHEV

#

by the time i got enough cash for a new car EV will probably be a lot more widely adopted

modest moss
#

my dad's is a Renault Zoe, it's tiny

#

it is a 4 door, barely

dull garnet
#

welp, there it is

umbral moss
#

yeah, because tesla's workmanship is dogwater so they offer you a massive warranty lmao

#

"I get a 10 year warranty" - dumby who bought a hyundai

wraith agate
#

I heard hyundais are good

#

I want a Honda Civic but the new one

potent arrow
#

Hyundai and good is not something I want to see in the same sentence

sly elk
#

I wouldn't buy a hyundai/kia unless it was like that rwd one with the v8 or maaaybe the v6

#

and I think the prices they ask for those are too high

#

like if you give me the choice between a $50k chrysler 300 with the v8 and a $60k genesis, I'd never buy the genesis

potent arrow
#

I'm very biased but I love my civics, it takes a lot to kill those things

sly elk
#

even if everyone and their mother tells me i'm an idiot for not buying the genesis for just $10k more

#

but if it were $40k I might consider it

wraith agate
#

I like the new Honda Civic, very angular, will definitely cause lethal internal bleeding if I hit a pedestrian, which isn't the goal ofc

sly elk
#

maybe it is the goal

wraith agate
#

Accidents can happen

sly elk
#

i'd be more willing to believe somebody buying a mazda for that purpose

potent arrow
#

Mazda 3 are perfect for that

sly elk
#

the way the hood sticks out about an inch past the grille

#

IDK why people keep swooning over mazda

wraith agate
#

Seriously, why did cars go for these more angular, sharp edged shapes?

potent arrow
#

Futuristic

sly elk
#

I think their current cars are hideous

#

also that cx30 looks like a pain in the ass to get into if you're tall

#

if you lean forward at all your head will hit the windshield

#

geez it looks like a pt cruiser with a long hood

wraith agate
potent arrow
#

I kinda wanna cop

sly elk
#

i like that and i like the miata

#

and the new supra

potent arrow
sly elk
#

the supra is the only bmw i like lol

#

I mean i guess there's the mini cooper as well

wraith agate
#

Miata user detected

potent arrow
#

....supra....bmw

sly elk
#

bmw makes some nice cars when they lock their car designers out of the room

potent arrow
#

I sold my neon

sly elk
#

you had a working neon?!

potent arrow
#

So I have 40-50k ish to play with for my new track car

sly elk
#

you had a working neon in 2023?!

potent arrow
wraith agate
#

Wait Sarah can drive?

sly elk
#

I kinda want to go find a random fresh neon to take to a dodge dealer and film their reaction

#

they'd be like "holy crap a working neon?!"

potent arrow
#

Lol it's not fresh

#

It's heavily modified

sly elk
#

but how"?!

potent arrow
#

I've mentioned it's got an old rotary in it, a custom adapted transmission

#

Running E85, methanol kit...the works

sly elk
#

that 224k mile neon has an auto transmission too o_O

potent arrow
#

Sold it to a shop friend because I blew a turbo

sly elk
potent arrow
#

And didn't want to put more money into it

potent arrow
sly elk
#

thhe upside down steering wheel always bugged me

potent arrow
#

The roll bar set up I had costed more then the chassis mewpaissa

#

I'm having withdrawals rn because I don't have a track car

#

I do want to get the BRZ, but idk how much tuning I can put into a newer car

#

So either I can a nice clean BRZ or I do a new project car an hate myself

#

Was challenged to make my next track car electric too

#

Dunno how that's gonna work.

sly elk
#

given your record with microwaves and toasters I'd suggest sticking with the brz lol

#

that or we're gonna hear about your used tesla battery spraying you with coolant

#

idk

potent arrow
#

I'm still an electrical eng

sly elk
#

did any of your lab projects ever catch on fire?

#

i should be ashamed of myself for asking that question but idk I almost caught an adc on fire once

potent arrow
#

Not the ones I do for production no

#

If Im doing work work it's the full proper process with health and safety

#

Full engineering design flow and all

#

But personal stuff I just kinda..wing it

sly elk
#

phew 🙂

#

so you need to do work work when you work on your car

potent arrow
#

Eh

#

It's a car

#

If it crashes and burns on the track what can go wrong /s

#

Luckily because I'm competiting, there are rules I need to adhere too. And the track marshall inspects all our cars

wide hill
#

the tar.gz is rising

#

i did tar -czvf

#

lmao, google play games messed up my directory reading

#

ah, nvm there is the "used" part that is now sorted instead, now that i updated

odd sand
#

Fuck me, been a series of minor crises today being the last day of the project

#

Going to be stuck finishing it up going into midnight I think

#

Nothing like realizing at 5pm your logic underpinning saving data to the database is flawed and will be duplicating entries

#

I was able to work out an elegant solution without resorting to jank. Also that I WAS able to figure out a solution and not have to be SoL and crawl back to them in the morning unfinished.

#

I'll leave the admin guide for tomorrow

sly elk
#

i imagine it's still cheaper lol

sly elk
#

wtf?!

#

nooooooooooo

cold yacht
#

Ok why try to pop it like a pimple

graceful pine
#

How did that even happen

sly elk
#

tire bubbles happen when the internal structure fails

#

remember tires are more than just rubber, there's a lot of metal belts and stuff inside holding them in the tire shape

graceful pine
#

I’ve just never even heard of that before

sly elk
#

when the structural bit fails you can have a leak between the layers of rubber and then you get a bubble like that

#

basically if you keep driving on it, it'll go ka-boom

odd sand
#

I don't think there's anything you can do but get a new tire

#

Any damage to the sidewall of a tire is GG

sly elk

umbral moss
# sly elk i imagine it's still cheaper lol

depends how much power you want, a tesla drivetrain (motor + inverter) is like $15k-ish and probably more now that tesla doesn't just total out cars when they get a ding in the bumper

#

the reason you had a million of the stupid things in the aftermarket was because tesla just didn't bother to fix any crashed cars, the repair value was too high compared to the insurance value so they just scrapped them for parts

sly elk
#

lol tesla didn't make that decision, the insurance companies did because tesla wouldn't sell the repair shops the parts they needed

#

and the worst part is that other car companies copied them

#

they all pull that shit now

#

"you need a part that we use to make thousands of new cars every day? Nah bruh it's on nationwide backorder for the next 6 months sorry"

wide hill

kindred brook
#

umbral moss
#

burn-in isn't a terribly big deal unless it's on 24/7

#

or like, 20 years old

#

it's not like CRTs didn't have the same problem 35 years ago

#

any phosphor-igniting element will degrade over time, them's the rules

signal fable
#

True

wise jay
#

Im sticking with IPS for now but by the next time I get a new main monitor OLED wont worry me at all and will probably be cheap. Theyve gone down a good bit already

umbral moss
#

my issue with OLED is that they haven't resolved the subpixel decay rate to be the same between the colors

signal fable
#

I'm still going to look how's the market since I'm saving for a 1440p build

umbral moss
#

so your monitor slowly gets more yellow over time since the blue pixel dies faster

#

imagine paying $3500 for a state of the art OLED and by the time your brightness half-life hits you're 600-700K warmer

signal fable
#

I'm waiting for more mini led monitor because I think it's a good compromise

#

You have really good colours, you don't have black levels like a oled but not as bad as a normal ips monitor

dull garnet
#

OLED aren't that much

With a supporting effort by UE5 being such dogshit performance without hyper optimizing it. Leading to lots of games that would have run fine on UE4 with the level of effort developers make, to almost requiring DLSS for decent fps on UE5.

Eventually I went out and bought a 32gb one for like $5 I knew would be the size to be properly FAT formatted and then it worked

void dove
#

entirely unnecessary

#

fat32, has support for larger than 32GB

#

but windows just doesn't do it if you format in the UI

#

you could have just formatted that drive in teh command line, or used a 3rd party tool called fat32format

#

in standard sector size of 512B, fat32 can reach up to 2TB max size

#

then again, 5$ is 5$, so who cares

odd sand
#

I tried a number of things including using rufus and it wasn't working so yes, after awhile I was tired of the nonsense and just got a preformatted 32gb that way I knew it would work heh

void dove
#

ive got a small box full of USB drives

#

i never throw any away 😛

#

so ive got like, 6x 8GB drives, and a couple 16, and another couple 32

odd sand
#

Yeah I have or had a 2gb one for many years but I couldn't find it

void dove
#

they used to get used A LOT

#

since well, i worked in IT

#

which is why i had so many

#

ive even got one very special 2GB one

#

which you can use a piece of software, to change how it presents itself

#

as either a removable drive, or a fixed disk

#

which was amazing back in the win XP days

#

as booting from USB was Very non-standard, so "removable drives" would just not work on many computers

sly elk
#

my msi motherboard actually came with a usb stick lmao

#

it kills me how both windows and macos come with real shitty drive partition/formatting tools

void dove
#

yeah, not uncommon nowadays

sly elk
#

like if you remember how to use fdisk or macos' diskutil in the commandline it can go ok but the GUI tools suck so bad lol

void dove
#

diskpart is my friend on windows

sly elk
#

I can fumble my way through whichever one by using the help screen xD

#

I know what I want, I just don't always remember what the tools call their options 😄

void dove
#

diskpart is one of those windows tools where you run it in cmd, and it opens its own prompt

odd sand
#

Want to ask for a raise by the end of the year so now that my project is finally done, im gonna try booking up to pass a few

void dove
#

though really nowadays i only really use it during windows install

#

#

diskpart

odd sand
#

I was like 1 question off passing the windows 101 one, so figured I could take 101 and 102 and sec+ and then knock out the splunk certs I took the classes for this summer at Splunk.conf

void dove
#

list disk
select disk 0
clean

#

Done

sly elk
#

the other funny thing is sometimes the OS won't let you repartition because it doesn't identify the existing partitions correctly, which is obnoxious

void dove
#

clean drives of all partition data

#

then install windows on a clean disk, dont even setup partitions, just select the empty drive, click next

#

windows does the setup for you

#

EZ

sly elk
#

my favorite thing about windows is when you install windows you need to turn off/remove all the other disks from your system

void dove
#

because i see the UI does fucky things if you dont clean the disk, liek trying to keep old recovery partitions and BS like that

sly elk
#

because it's totally unpredictable where it will try to install its boot loader stuff

void dove
#

yep

#

it checks what drive the hardware sees as the first disk

#

which is the problem

sly elk
#

it'll usually zero in on wherever you have grub or whatever else installed and fuck it up for you 😄

#

drives me u pa fucking wall

void dove
#

ALWAYS, unplug all other disks when installing windows

#

after that, easy

#

all works fine

sly elk
#

it's funny because I couldn't blame apple for doing that because it makes sense for them to assume you'd never use something else on a mac (especially an apple silicon one) but.... on a pc? come on man

void dove
#

unless you have some dumb disk with an old boot sector on it

#

which is fun when you next reboot 😄

#

and the mobo decides to try boot that one

odd sand
#

I hit that landmine once. It put it somewhere odd or the old one I had from the old OS made it not load properly afterwards. So I had to unplug it and redo the entire process

#

Bc that was simply faster than trying to edit things

sly elk
#

my very favorite was that weird period in time where you could partition a disk GPT

#

and then for compatibility reasons, shove an mbr inside it

void dove
#

well gpt does have backup partition tables,

#

and IS supposed to be compatible

sly elk
#

way back in the early days of intel macs, I remember screwing up my macos partition to the point t wouldn't work, but windows still booted lmao

#

because the efi could still see the mbr and know to boot windows

#

it was funny :3

sly elk
#

Monoprice, I applaud your audacious use of the word premium for 99 cent earbuds

#

I remember back in the early 2000s, Kia launched a car they advertised as "The Kia Amanti Premium Sedan"

#

idk I feel like it's an awfully presumptuous word to use to describe your product yourself. Like, that's a word that you want reviewers and customers to use to describe it. But self-proclaiming premium is weird.

#

Apple's new M3 Pro chip with a 12-core CPU offers only marginally faster CPU performance compared to the M2 Pro chip with a 12-core CPU, according to a Geekbench 6 result spotted today by Vadim Yuryev, co-host of the YouTube channel Max Tech. This is only a single benchmark result, so further results are needed to ensure accuracy.

meh.

#

I personally only trust linux to format/partition things correctly lool

#

even good ole gparted

#

I hate the way macos and windows both play the "I only understand what I want to" shit

#

-pops USB stick with the wrong partition formats on it into a windows machine- -windows completely ignores the usb stick's existence, even in diskmgmt-

#

actually I gotta say

#

the version of disk utility apple came out with in the last few years is a total piece of shit

#

I honestly don't know what happened there but it's just straight up garbage

#

every time I try to do something with it I end up unmounting the disk and looking up the correct things to type in the terminal window to accomplish what i want lmao

dull garnet
#

Yeah I wanted to format a disk ext4 from Windows for my pi recently and that was basically impossible, but I also didn't want to make a gparted disk... In the end I just formatted it ntfs and added the disk to my fstab so it was properly mounted... Pretty needless lol. I could have done something wrong

sly elk
#

it's funny because the gui app is really just a front end for the cli utility

#

but about 50% of the time you try to do something interesting (more than 1 partition on a disk) in the gui disk utility it will fail badly

#

sometimes it fails just doing the most basic shit like repartitioning a usb stick with a single volume

#

god forbid you try to take something with APFS and redo it without APFS 😄

sly elk
#

my coworkers do that kinda crap all the time

one of my coworkers is just a straight up "make wsl do things that a real linux machine could by fucking with the registry and windows config" guru

could also be that some metallic fragment broke off and is now below the motherboard

wise jay
#

ya a grounding post couldve snapped

lament pine
#

My spouse mentioned rebuilding it, I assume just fully debuilding it and making sure there's no debris before rebuilding

wise jay
#

ya itd be a good idea because you could closely inspect everything

cerulean talon
#

Yarp, that'd be the next step imo.

lost python
#

and check every single part for potential damage while rebuilding it

lament pine
#

Yeah we thought replacing the power supply would do it but no

cerulean talon
#

Eh, that's the usual first step.

lament pine
#

This has been lit up however since we've had that thing

modest moss
#

Yeah methodically reseating everything would make sense for the next

lament pine
#

Just all the time

#

I don't think that's causing the shorts but i also don't think it's supposed to do that

cerulean talon
#

Software controlled, it might be running on the always-on lines tho.

#

If it wasn't before, but is now, it's possible the mobo itself is damaged, but that'd be odd for a bottom drop uniless the GPU wiggled itself hard or something.

#

It's the only thing that weighs anything in a build like that.

lament pine
#

Oh the scuffs are on the top at the back 🫠

lost python
#

scuffs or dents?

#

or both?

lament pine
#

I know he mentioned a corner was dented

#

One of the thumb screws definitely died

lost python
#

could be that a bit there is bent just enough to make contact with the board. guess you will see more when you take it apart

lament pine
#

I'm hoping that no internals are damaged and maybe just rehousing in a new case would eliminate the issue

royal forge
#

Could just rebuild outside

#

As in, pop it on a cardboard box

modest moss
#

yeah that's a good test

potent arrow
#

My thoughts would be that you buckled the case enough that it's shorting out on the back of the motherboard

lament pine
#

Is the margin thin enough to do that by denting the corner?

void dove
#

not likely, standoffs are a thing after all

#

would have to have warped the case pretty bad

lament pine
#

The side profile looks intact, but of course that isn't the end all be all

potent arrow
#

But really something has to be shorting for it to trip a breaker

#

LED on motherboard suggestes to me maybe something on the board got knocked loose and the motherboard is in fault mode

void dove
#

something something, read the motherboard manual to see what that light means?

potent arrow
#

Just thinking out loud, I do get a few of these scenarios in my shop

#

Yep rtfm something something

void dove
#

mobos also have beep codes, IF it has a pc speaker, which many dont

#

but they cost like 5$, at your local parts place, jaycar for me

potent arrow
#

I course of action would be:
Remove everything and launch it outside the box
Case 1:
It boots, the case is probably shorting it
Case 2:
It doesn't boot and it's probably some internal damage. Then I would test bench all the individual parts :P

potent arrow
#

I wish more mobos had seven segment diag displays

modest moss
#

I know a guy, who absolutely was not this guy (it was this guy) who forgot to use mobo risers on a build once

#

short city

void dove
#

ive got a few which are like, 20 years old by now, ripped out of old company computers

modest moss
#

thankfully I was able to add them and it was fine

void dove
#

still use them, always put one in my current computer

void dove
#

amateur hour

modest moss
#

it was many years ago

potent arrow
#

2015?¿ I think

void dove
#

ive seen "professionals" do some really dumb shit, i dont trust anyone with my PC at all.

potent arrow
#

I don't trust myself lol

#

I don't work on my own PC and I've been doing this for years

#

I mean yeah, but I rather not work on my own PC

#

Pain in the aasssss

void dove
#

yeah a good quality, good size case, does wonders

#

small cases are nice for Simple builds

potent arrow
#

I like sff

void dove
#

as long as you dont need to change much ever

potent arrow
#

A good challenge and good for me who moves a lot

void dove
#

but once you start adding extra drives, and other stuff, it gets painful

lament pine
#

Oof

potent arrow
#

Small boi

lament pine
#

The thing is that the shorts arent reproducible

potent arrow
#

O

lament pine
#

They just kind of happen

#

🫠

potent arrow
#

That's.... definitely internal damage

lament pine
#

fuck

#

But like to what

potent arrow
#

Itself lol

lament pine
#

like which piece 😭

potent arrow
#

Could take just one thing in one of the power stages for example

#

My bet is always motherboard or cpu

#

Probably motherboard

#

They are just chillin

#

I'm still debating whether I should buy a new airbrush or build a new spray paint booth

#

...or a new pc

wise jay
#

I wanna eat it

lament pine
#

How can we diagnose if there's damage to a specific part of the build

#

What reading on that indicates damage?

potent arrow
#

Shorts are really annoying to diagnose, even for me who has a full shop for it lol

#

Especially intermittent ones

glossy ravine
#

Re: build from last night.

I could also give them my current card. I was planning on upgrading anyway to a 6750 XT and the 5600 XT should run Sims, BG3, and XIV just fine all the while saving them 400 USD

lament pine
#

We do have a second build that we could do

glossy ravine
#

Oh? I was looking at the website that was linked and the $1122 was suggesting the afformentioned 6750 XT
