@cerulean talon purpur

hushed ermine
#

does enabling all my processor like this help with my fps?

modest moss
stable mirage
#

emphasis on i think

potent arrow
#

I've never talked in this channel before

cerulean talon
fleet cave
#

So I had an FPS question if someone were willing to indulge me.

#

This is my pc build.

My FPS in cities (limsa/Uldah) is about 40-50fps, in zones with people usually around 80~ and in empty zones I tend to get FPS around 100-110fps.

#

Is that performance to be expected, and tangentially to that what is it that is holding me back tHONK

paper tusk
#

sounds like cpu holding you back hard this is in laby on my laptop (i5-12500H + 3050 @ 1080/60)

hushed ermine
#

so would enabling all my processor boost up my fps or nah

paper tusk
#

using all threads helps with performance in general

hushed ermine
#

i have a ryzen 9 3900x but when i play baldur gate 3 while being in a crowded area my fps drops down to like 40 fps

#

how do i enable them

paper tusk
#

no point in reducing that unless you're micro managing bazed off zen chiplets (or old software that should have affinity set in windows)

#

r9 3900x is 24 thread so you're set

#

if performance sucks relative to graphics would double check the ram is clocked properly

#

2400 (non XMP profile) speed loses a lot of performance to 3200 or 3600 (whatever the sticks are rated for)

hushed ermine
#

yeah so i enabled all the cores fps still the same

fleet cave
paper tusk
#

in bios (or task manager)

void dove
#

should be physically impossible

#

unless you have a fake 3070

paper tusk
#

I don't get that either

hushed ermine
paper tusk
#

oof

#

need to enable XMP in bios

void dove
#

im running 32 GB of 3200, ddr4

hushed ermine
void dove
#

check what the ram is rated for

hushed ermine
#

and what does the oof mean sideeye

void dove
#

XMP, (or DOCP for AMD)

paper tusk
#

overclocks ram to the rated spec

void dove
#

oof = bad

#

oof= yikes

#

so, lookup the ram's specs, and set that in the bios, via XMP (if on intel) or DOCP (if on AMD)

hushed ermine
#

i have amd

void dove
#

ok cool, thats just the name AMD calls it, doesn't change anything else

#

you still have to lookup the specs to figure it out

hushed ermine
#

it was this

void dove
#

ok, you can literally see the speed right there

hushed ermine
#

3600?

void dove
#

yes

hushed ermine
#

yeah im bad at tech stuff

#

so i just gotta make it to that speed?

#

cuz right now it says 2666 mhz

void dove
#

set DOCP to 3600, yes

paper tusk
#

yeah should be fine with just setting the speed and letting the system deal with the rest

void dove
#

you are losing a large chunk of performance

hushed ermine
#

im so glad u guys r here

void dove
#

yeah thats why xmp/docp exists

#

you set it, and it does the rest

#

but has to be done in bios

#

usually when building the computer

#

you do that

#

so if someone else built it for you, give them a smack πŸ˜›

hushed ermine
#

nah i installed those rams

#

afterwards

potent arrow
#

ITs a common misake lol

void dove
#

literally leaving a chunk of performance on the table

hushed ermine
#

just kinda sticked it into the motherboard

potent arrow
#

Not very obvious if you arnt doing it often

#

and most guides ignore it

hushed ermine
#

uh

#

how do i enter bios

void dove
#

depends on your motherboard

#

check your motherboard manual

#

its usually something like, F2, or delete, or F12, or maybe something else

hushed ermine
#

well its a ASUS to start off with

#

i forgot the exact name

#

a320m-k

paper tusk
#

should be Del

#

although asus page also mentions F2

hushed ermine
#

lemme try

void dove
#

also would have come with the motherboard

hushed ermine
#

i see ot

#

docp disabled

#

but it only shows a profile

void dove
#

read to the right

#

what is that profile for

#

you have cut it off lol

hushed ermine
void dove
#

and what did we say earlier

#

and what did you find the speed was?

hushed ermine
#

3600

hushed ermine
#

oh i see it says 3597

paper tusk
#

close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades

void dove
#

yea close enough

#

only having one profile is odd to me, mine has multiple, but maybe its cheap ram, i dunno

#

though i do my stuff in advanced menu

#

so i prob get more options

#

doesn't matter, save, reboot, done

hushed ermine
#

i still think my 3900x is bottle necking my gpu

void dove
#

very unlikely

#

3900x is still very good, unless you have your game at really high frame rates, thats probably not happening

#

have task manager running, showing GPU stats, and see what happens while in game. if it shows the GPU hitting 90%+, its not the cpu

#

this assumes whatever game, is actually using the GPU efficiently as well, which isn't really something you can check

#

i dont think you've mentioned what graphics card you are running either

#

as well as what graphics settings you are using in BG3

#

all these things matter.

#

also game could just be bad wiith your particular setup, or you are running old graphics drivers

hushed ermine
#

this is while running the game

#

the frame only drops when im in cluttered areas like the city

late basalt
#

in 14? that's almost a given tbh

void dove
#

BG3

#

unless i misread

hushed ermine
#

yes

#

in bg3

#

framerate do drop when theres a lot of ppl in ff14 too but not that bad

late basalt
#

Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

#

same reason, different causes probably

paper tusk
#

might be an engine quirk

late basalt
#

rendering a bunch of stuff isnt conducive to framerate

late basalt
hushed ermine
#

so it is the cpu bottleneck?

late basalt
#

dunno

#

you dont have the cpu stats in the same screen

paper tusk
#

bg3 also runs better on dx11 than vulkan

void dove
#

cpu bottle necks are harder to see

hushed ermine
void dove
#

as most games can't fully use all of a cpu's threads

late basalt
#

eh.... depends on core-count and game programming

void dove
#

thats a lot of utilisation for a 12 core cpu

#

for one game

late basalt
#

like if you had a dual-core cpu, and a game being slow while the cpu utilization was pegged to 50%

#

yea, cpu bottleneck

void dove
#

i dunno how BG3 runs on multi core

hushed ermine
late basalt
#

ngl, i'm more concerned about the 271 processes

paper tusk
hushed ermine
void dove
#

depends on your computer

#

and what you have installed

#

271 is quite a bit, compared to my clean lean system

late basalt
void dove
late basalt
paper tusk
#

I have a bunch of crap on my laptop because intel demands it (also have 2 twitch strims up on firefox). edit: and antivirus that isn't jank windows defender

late basalt
#

πŸ€” i wonder if there's a way to figure out the longest uptime your pc's had

#

because the 11 days is rookie numbers for me haha

#

that just happens to be the last time power went wonky with storms

paper tusk
#

I miss windows 7 uptime measured in months

fleet cave
void dove
#

never heard of speccy, sounds like shit πŸ˜›

late basalt
#

probably

#

sounds like some garbage 32bit program if it cant correctly see large numbers

void dove
#

well also the screenshot, is missing some things i would expect from a program like that

hushed ermine
#

what does the 3900x mean on the cpu

void dove
#

so yea, i dont rate it

#

its, the model of hte cpu

late basalt
#

model, product line, generation, etc

#

which is unironically why i like intel's i-series

void dove
#

ah, but they aren't i series anymore πŸ˜›

#

because marketing need to justify their paychecks πŸ˜›

late basalt
#

no, but if someone says they upgraded from an i-3 3100 to an i-5 10600 or w/e

#

you know just how massive of an upgrade that is

hushed ermine
void dove
#

zen has this as well you know

#

r5 r7 r9

late basalt
#

THIS WAS MY UPGRADE

hushed ermine
#

so what is the difference between a ryzen 9 3900x and 5900x

late basalt
#

7 fucking years on that cpu

void dove
#

which is, something

#

you can't quantify it by just looking at model numbers

#

you have to lookup benchmarks

late basalt
hushed ermine
void dove
#

different cpu generations have different internal changes, to architecture, which changes their behaviour

#

some things will run way better, others will run a bit better

late basalt
#

and whether a motherboard supports it out of the box

hushed ermine
#

it says lower latency n higher speed

late basalt
#

or needs a new southbridge chip to support the latest arch

void dove
#

is this userbenchmark

paper tusk
#

userbenchmarks isn't very good at actual app performance

void dove
#

please tell me its not userbenchmark

#

oooof

#

yea, do NOT use userbenchmark

#

they are insanely biased against AMD, its insane

hushed ermine
#

i just kinda googled it

void dove
#

its a fucking joke

hushed ermine
#

n it was the first result

paper tusk
#

which is why ryzen 3xxx to 5xxx usually gets a good 20% uplift in gaming, and another chunk going from 5xxx to 5800X3D (since better performance per core, and better memory manager)

late basalt
#

Userbenchmark is a hot steaming garbage dumpster fire, do not use it as a reference

void dove
#

the bias is insane

#

yea, dont touch them wiht a 10 foot pole

#

ever

late basalt
#

if it isnt already

modest moss
late basalt
#

oh, looks like it is, buried underneath the horny pins though

#

Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

#

πŸ€” would unpinning and repinning bring it to the top of the list?

#

or are pins chronological?

void dove
#

check out gamers nexus, or hardware unboxed, on youtube if you want good thorough and unbiased reviews

late basalt
#

and ask here if you want strong opinions based on personal experience (questionable value though)

#

like how amd gpus are shitty because they only hire competent SWEs to write drivers after launching a product /s

#

and on that note, time for a shower before bed

fleet cave
#

Alright so atm, standing in Limsa on balmung at 50-54fps~

#

So its my CPU thats causing my grief here from what someone said earlier? And if so what should I be looking for in an upgrade for the future? tHONK

paper tusk
#

since you have 10th gen any upgrades are going to involve new cpu/mobo. in the mean time that ram speed needs to go up

void dove
#

im on ddr4- 3200 on a 5900X, with no major issues

paper tusk
#

(SparkyMage's) mem speed is 2400

void dove
#

oh was thinking about the other person on 3600

#

uh yea, that ram is kinda trash

#

but, standing in limsa, and getting 50fps, is kinda normal even for high end rigs

#

the game isn't exactly optimised to the nth degree

#

when it comes to CPU

paper tusk
#

yeah especially when player count increases (frame rate drops good)

void dove
#

my cpu doesn't break a sweat, and nothing else is bottlenecked on my system. but i still get frame drops in limsa, unless i lower my graphics down, despite neither hte CPU nor GPU, hitting any bottlenecks

#

yea, increased player counts, has something about it that isn't well optimised

#

i CAN, hit 120+ fps in limsa, if i put my gfx settings to the lowest

#

but i dont care about limsa

#

i care about the rest of the game, so i dont do that

paper tusk
#

my mopey laptop gets 57-67 fps in famfrit limsa (next to the jades who are getting hate crowded)

void dove
#

i have gfx at max, and hit 60+ usually

#

depending, sometimes im at 80

#

sometimes i hit 55

#

and im on a 5900x and a 3070

#

everywhere else, fps hits 100+

#

upgrading CPU, just for limsa, seems wasteful to me, since yea, thats almost a full system rebuild

void dove
fleet cave
void dove
#

ok, then, fix it

paper tusk
void dove
#

adjust xmp

#

exactly same thing we just went through with the other person

#

if its 3600, then you are running the ram at 2/3 speed

#

which is a sizeable hit to many games

#

i doubt it will help you a lot here, as thats just how ff14 is, but it will probably help a little at least

paper tusk
#

yeah fix that then pop an alcoholic beverage if the improvement isn't enough (cost of cpu/mobo considering intel 13 gen refresh is around the bend)

#

I would fix ram speed well before budgeting for new cpu

#

gen 10 is still plenty usable

void dove
#

10th gen is more than usable

deep sapphire
#

get an 8700K

void dove
#

8 core 16 thread part, easy

void dove
#

that 10700f is still good

#

a 3 year old CPU, is not "old", especially a mid range one like that

#

CPU bottlenecks are less likely nowadays, as most games still can't actually use the large amount of cores.

#

so a mid range cpu lasts much longer than they used to

sly elk
#

yea, admittedly i upgraded from my 9700k to a 7800x3d because i felt like it not because I felt I needed to lol

Alright, I watched the whole thing

#

I personally agree that with Ian that LMG should be held accountable for some stuff but not all; absolutely the Madison allegations and the mishandling of the Billet Labs waterblock, but stuff like incorrect testing data should’ve been a bit lighter because it’s not gonna cause the entire tech journalism space to collapse and implode upon itself. On the other hand, Steve should also be held accountable for stuff like blowing things out of proportion like when he said that the waterblock was their life’s work and implying that they could go under, and holding LMG to his standards, and as Ian said there’s no β€œuniversally accepted” one

#

So this, I think, is a case of Steve’s heart being in the right place but the methods and mentality going about it being shit

#

And yeah Steve let it all get to his head; his language was too emotionally charged and Ian got his point across without getting flared up

Question: Is wifi 5 has the same stability in terms of playing online games like wired?

#

not 5g mobile network but the router wifi 5.

paper tusk
#

5ghz wifi has less range than 2.4ghz but is less crowded usually. if you mean wifi 5 (AC) there's more latency than wifi 6 (AX) but it's still playable (in 14)

#

stability tends to come down to the router and competing with other wifi networks

analog aspen
#

that means wired still better

paper tusk
#

to a certain degree if the router processor can't handle the number of devices

#

if it's just 5 devices connected and doing nothing should be fine

#

wired is usually better in every way speed/latency wise since ethernet is an old standard and doesn't take much resources

#

(i.e. can actually get gigabit speed assuming your internet connection is up to task)

#

(while wifi might top off at 350mbit in real world use)

should i have an intake on the top or the front?

ok thats waht i was thinking, just wanted to confirm, bough tsome cheap fans for my dads pc that i put linux on

umbral moss
#

if you have enough open area elsewhere in the case (ie, open/passive grills, gaps in the chassis), you might want to just put two intake fans

there's no value add in having an exhaust fan when the exhaust flow isn't necessarily pulling air somewhere you want it to go, and the positive pressure will keep crap out of the case

air flow is a vaccuum, as long as there is pressure generated it'll work

#

I will be selling my old 5600 XT for like. 100-150 on like. Ebay to recoup some of the cost.

lost python
#

well, remember to not look for new cards. they arent being manufactured anymore and vendors are selling remaining stock for inflated prices

also for the 6850xt you would need a new PSU

glossy ravine

This is the 6750 xt, is the 6850 a thing?

lost python
#

oh lol, no it isnt, i meant the 6750xt

#

they skipped the 6800 and just went over to 6950xt

glossy ravine

Gotcha.

#

Looking at PSUs, grabbing the 6750 would incur an extra 150 for a 850w psu.

#

Corsair of course. (Never cheaping out on these things.)

#

I suppose I'll be sticking to the 6700, as I don't have that extra 150 for the psu right now.

#

Then again, AC should work fine with my deck.

lost python

hmm wait

glossy ravine

The whole reason this came up was because of AC and min. Gpu requirements.

If the deck can run the game fine, I'll be okay.

lost python

hmm you might be ok with the 6750xt but i would recommend a bigger psu

and yeah it might be alright with your old card

i enjoy being in office with my coworkers

it would suck hard if i had to "work from home" alone for the rest of my life

deep sapphire
#

I said from the start WFH all the time was a stupid idea because its incredibly difficult to stay motivated on top of working with others

#

obviously during pandemic it was the only viable option but after that

Some stuff you legitimately can do fine from home

But meetings should be done in person

also rub silicone grease on your rubber door trim to prevent them from freezing

deep sapphire

okay I did that once but then I learned that can crack your windows so im never doing that again

wide hill

yeah the best advice I've ever gotten was the silicone grease on the rubber trim

#

once I did that I never had a single door freeze

Hybrid is the best compromise imo

specially when you can tune them for high performance

that new toyota tundra has some impressive torque specs for being a V6 hybrid

#

too bad the fuel economy is laughable for also being a hybrid

I dealt with that with my old ISP, there was clearly something fucked in the junction box outside and they said they would have an engineer come out and look cause it was an issue in the apartment complex, they never sent anyone after multiple requests

which I get, it was in the winter and the ground is rock hard so you arent digging shit but come on

I had a problem like that a couple houses ago

The internet would die every night when the weather was above 100f or so in the day

I couldn’t convince them something was fucked somewhere lol

#

Usually it’s easy to counter when they say it’s your house wiring by plugging it in outside at the ground block and being like β€œsee shits still ducked!”

Cool. So ever since I got my PC built ( 1 year and 6 months ago ), my extra drive has sometimes stopped working, I reboot and it disappears. Two times after just doing a hard reset/restart it would come back. Well yesterday, that wasn't working until I went to the BIOS, and saw my drives were there. After a few boot loop cycles, the extra drive showed up. What could be the cause of that you guys think? I'm only a software enginner so my computer enginner skills are poo LOL.
