#

experiences tell me that free things is not free of troubles. If you rely on network reliability, a quality router and mesh sound like a must

sly elk
#

like, free for you? or free like they let you use their router for free while you have their service?

#

my isp rents routers but the routers are managed by them

royal forge
#

mine gives a router with the service

#

it's not great

#

but shit, at least the technicians will fix it

#

cuz all our technicians are kinda like drones in that they dont know how to fix anything outside their own stuff

sly elk
#

that makes sense

#

which is both the good and the bad thing about those routers

#

the ones my isp rents (the rental might be free for some tiers lol) are things they can control on their end, so if you call complaining about wifi not working, they can reset it and try stuff

#

which is great if you need that kinda help

#

but creepy if you don't

royal forge
#

well

#

i dunoe about you guys

#

but ours lay fiber right to the house

sly elk
#

so did mine lol

royal forge
#

so they can individually reset shit

#

but that's sorta, i dunoe

#

what i kinda expect?

torpid kayak
sly elk
#

that box isn't the same box as the router though

royal forge
#

ah true

#

i legit dunoe how my router works top kek

sly elk
#

the fiber line goes to a box in the closet my furnace is in

royal forge
#

we have holes drilled in our walls for the fucking fiber

sly elk
#

the ONT (optical network terminal) box has an ethernet port and then you can plug whatever you want into that. preferably a router. hehe. any router works though.

#

the only special thing the ISP's router does is it has a coax port for hooking up tv boxes

royal forge
#

but you need the router to connect to the internet right?

sly elk
#

the ONT is technically the thing that makes the connection

royal forge
#

our ISP's router sorta come, preconfigured?

#

like you plug and go

#

it's p neat that way

sly elk
#

some ISPs use a box that is a combination router and ONT

royal forge
#

then you have a customer who breaks the fiber cable by folding it

hard drift
sly elk
#

I think this is part of why they don't do that here

royal forge
#

i had a friend who folded their fiber cable

sly elk
#

depending on the house

royal forge
#

then was telling me the ISP was dumb

sly elk
#

sometimes they mount the ONT outside in a plastic box

royal forge
#

i was like

#

bless this fool

#

bless this fucking dumbass

sly elk
#

and if they're really lazy, they'll use the existing coax wiring to connect the ONT to the router (and have the router inside the house just plugged into a cable tv jack)

#

but the ONT connection is considered permanent/non-serviceable

#

that's how they keep customers from breaking the fiber line xd

royal forge
#

my dad yanked the fiber cable in the house

#

i nearly fucking cried

sly elk
#

sadness

royal forge
#

thank fuck it was just a small issue

#

he was telling me over video call ya know

#

"i wanted to stop ur sister from being addicted to the internet so much"

#

"so i yanked this cable and now the internet doesn't work"

#

i said show me the cable

#

and when he pointed to the FUCKING DISCONNECTED FIBER CABLE

#

i felt my heart just dip

sly elk
#

did ya learn how to reterminate the end past the break? XD

#

what I don't get is my ONT looks pretty old but it still can do gigabit

paper tusk
#

well there's yer problem

#

dlink is shit

#

like tp-link's lack of firmware updates but with meh hardware too

royal forge
#

well

#

ya know

#

ISP router

#

so

paper tusk
#

yeah 😐

potent arrow
#

I hear consumer mesh and I run away screaming

#

They are all shit

sly elk
#

I expect the commercial mesh is garbage as well

#

hell, wireless uplink on ubiquiti (which is consumer hahaha) is crap too >>

#

i mean, it works.

#

90% of the time it works 100% of the time

potent arrow
#

The only one that I've had seen work reliably is the Google one

#

Otherwise? Shit

#

The TP link one? Beyond redemption

sly elk
#

like 2 of my cameras are connected to an AP that is out in my garage and wirelessly links to a wired AP

#

and they work pretty darn well

potent arrow
#

I push just hardwiring APs so hard because I know it's reliable

sly elk
#

(hehe one is connected to the ethernet jack on the ap)

#

it looks so dumb 😄

royal forge
#

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

potent arrow
#

Those shitty consumer nodes that "go anywhere" fucking suck

royal forge
#

technician """fixed""" it alright

#

the """mesh""" router is connecting to the 5Ghz connection

sly elk
#

gah i fucking hate icloud

royal forge
#

and it wont work

#

but it propogates it as 2.4Ghz or some bollocks

#

so my internet connection will get interrupted cause of it

#

HOLY SHIT

#

HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU DISCONNECTING EVERY FEW MINUTES

sly elk
#

hmm

#

what imma suggest is a little unorthodox but can you just get another AP to plug into their router?

#

like would they be ok wth that?

torpid kayak
royal forge
#

ya know what i mean?

sly elk
#

I didn't say it would be for their benefit

royal forge
#

i know i know

sly elk
#

they'd still use their own wifi

royal forge
#

i dont THINK there's another AP

sly elk
#

you just effectively get your own wifi and can change the channel and frequency. maybe get a wifi 6 ap

#

but you're still using their router/network

royal forge
#

or do you mean grab a router for myself?

#

like, get a mesh router for myself

sly elk
#

IIRC

#

your landlord has the router in their room so you can't just run an ethernet cable to it

#

and their router's wifi sucks

#

yea? but they didn't say you can't plug your own AP into their router and tune it to your desire?

royal forge
#

OH

#

i get what you mean

#

so basically plug another router into the ONT and setup my own network?

sly elk
#

an AP just does wifi, if you plugged that into their router your devices would still be on their network and using their IP range

#

you could try that, too...

#

IDK what the internet setup at your place looks like. Is it ONT <-> router <-> computers/phones/whatever on wifi?

royal forge
#

or you mean plug a router or whatever via LAN into THEIR router?

sly elk
#

or is the ONT and router the same entity?

royal forge
#

HOLY SHIT IT'S GETTING WORSE

#

ONT and router and seperate

#

i swear it's the mesh wifi fucking things

sly elk
#

ok

#

does the ONT have multiple ethernet?

#

(even if it did, it might only allow 1 device to pull a public IP)

royal forge
#

brb disconnecting the router or smth

#

it does.

#

i think

#

hold on

#

i dont know what exacvtly is happening

#

there'll be sudden disconnections?

#

but i dont know why

#

i wonder if it's cuz it's bouncing me between the two routers

sharp star

I have a case made for positive pressure so I'm running four intake, one exhaust because there are holes punched in the back

so I went with a 3090

it does the job, and defo renders a fuckton faster than what I used to work with

real edge

ye rendering and stuff soaks up vram

royal forge

but I am working with

stupid details

i dont THINK games would need that much?

wraith agate

indie is about to break into 2k really, give a few years

royal forge

might as well say a fukken 4090 SLI then

royal forge

that's part of the dev process

i THINK unity has some more "friendly" aspects for game dev?

FUCK

real edge

so

deep sapphire
#

LMAO

real edge
#

nvidia has the advantage in terms of workloads

wraith agate
royal forge
#

alright

real edge
#

so you definitely do not want an amd gpu

royal forge
#

up to ya

#

but ye, sounds like, it's defo an nvidia

wraith agate
#

plus I hate Unity, but that's a personal take

deep sapphire
#

and AMD has the advantage of lying to its customers about usable core counts

royal forge
#

and that AMD driver kills windows

#

but thats rare

#

apparently

real edge
#

how much is a used 3090 in your used market?

wraith agate
#

for shame, they got the best name for a workstation CPU, Threadripper

real edge
#

amd cpus are fine

royal forge

also depends on where your market is, tbh

royal forge

oh. i saw NA server

wraith agate

wraith agate

NA server is a lie

royal forge
#

ah

wraith agate
#

I live in Hungary

royal forge
#

well, Nhadala can advise on the market i think?

real edge
#

basically you want an nvidia gpu with plenty of vram for rendering and workloads

royal forge
#

i dont fuckin know shit on that

#

ye

real edge
#

but they are expensive

real edge
#

unless you somehow score a used gpu

wraith agate
#

I know Nvidia keep pushing CUDA cores, but honestly that's for rendering 3D animations and models

royal forge
#

u do know ur game also involves game models

#

you have to first make a higher res model, then optimize it

wraith agate
#

that's already prerendered in most cases

real edge
#

I wouldn't recommend an amd gpu for workloads

royal forge
#

no hank. This is for kupobot !hank spam

real edge
#

yes

#

so

#

a 3090 or a 4090, or a 4080

#

a used 3090 is your best bet

if you want a reasonable price

royal forge
#

i dont think you can find 3090 new

#

even my local stock is out

wraith agate
deep sapphire
#

thanks dkoldies

royal forge

thats wishful thinking, that. Second hand 3090 for new

real edge
#

as for cpu

wraith agate
#

welcome to Hungary, people here clearly weren't raised under capitalism, else we would have better bargaining

real edge
#

is your workload thread dependant?

deep sapphire
#

I thought you lived in the UK

wraith agate
#

well physics traditionally is a CPU intensive

wraith agate
wraith agate
#

currently? depends

#

I might be able to get stuffs on loan

real edge
#

I would highly recommend waiting before purchasing a GPU

#

stuffs too expensive rn

wraith agate
#

let's say current budget is in $4000, roughly

#

when do we expect prices to drop?

royal forge
#

when the 5000 series is announced

#

unfortunately

real edge
#

ye

real edge
#

blender? or

wraith agate
#

right now just UE5

#

I still haven't picked up 3D modeling yet

royal forge
#

?????????????????????????????????????

#

Then how are you gonna make game models??

wraith agate
#

here's a gamedev protip: make sure your gameplay loop works with devblocks before you jump ahead and make 3D models and animations

royal forge
#

uhhh

#

sure.. i'll take ur word for it

real edge
#

the minimum requirements for UE5 seem really low

wraith agate
#

in triple A, you can avoid that as there are thousands of people working on it

real edge
#

hm

#

the best gaming and workload hybrid cpu

#

is the 7950X3D

#

you get the vcache and tons of threads with good IPC

#

vcache for games

wraith agate
#

hm

real edge
#

but its also kinda overkill

wraith agate
#

that's true

real edge
#

im stumped because idk what people usually run for game dev

#

I know for modeling

#

you need a lot of vram

#

and ram

#

and for code compiling and shit

#

you need a good cpu

#

so my tech knowledge recommends you a high thread and core count cpu

#

with a gpu with high vram

#

nvidia preferably

#

but that is jacking up the cost immensely

#

waiting is preferred right now

#

the most ideal specs are

#

7950X3D
64 gigs of ram
A used 3090, or wait for 4080 and 4090 to drop

#

but thats ungodly expensive

#

so idk if I would recommend building it

wraith agate
#

I think the best is to wait rn

real edge
#

yes

wraith agate
#

perfect gameplay loops, write story, seek ways to get voicing, maybe find someone to do music and SFX

#

a lot to do

real edge
#

for game dev and working with models and stuff

-Nvidia GPU with high vram
-64 gigs of ram
-CPU with a high thread and core count to help with compiling code and physics

these are my guidelines as of right now

#

if you do not work with 3d models and modeling

#

you can maybe skip the high gpu requirement

wraith agate
#

noted

#

I am still not sure if baking lights into environments uses gpu or not

#

but I guess I could use the high GPU for playing games myself

real edge
#

for games you do not need an expensive nvidia gpu

#

to play them that is

#

if your plan is only to play then there are cheaper options

#

also

#

please for the love of all that is holy do not take out a loan to buy the system

royal forge
#

High end gaming PCs or even for game dev for a hobby is very much a non-essential item

real edge
#

^

royal forge
#

getting a loan for stuff like this, esp tech is a bad idea

real edge
#

and for hobbyist stuff

#

getting old stuff is good as well

#

you can build a workstation PC with far less money

#

an old xeon cpu with an old workstation nvidia gpu with high vram

#

if you are even remotely serious about this

#

then get 500 or so bucks together by yourself, no loans

#

and build an old workstation pc for game dev and only game dev

wraith agate
real edge
#

even then I'd highly hesitate taking out loans to build a system

#

build an old workstation PC if you want to get your feet into gamedev

#

for far less money

#

and no loans

#

as someone that only earns 300 a month

#

and has seen parents take out loans

#

they can quickly sink you into debt

#

and if your gamedev stint does not work out

#

ull regret ever taking out a loan

#

only build tech with spare money

#

its a very bad financial decision to take out a loan for something you are not even sure will work out

#

its akin to gambling

▶ Play video
#

is it the same as flooding that exhaust in the video? lol

deep sapphire
#

Though flooding usually has water coming into the intake as exhaust pressure pushes things backwards, but yeah engines are just giant air vacuums

#

They compress air and fuel which combusts to create a force

#

Water doesn’t compress

#

So if you get water into the engine it will lock it up and stall it or damage it

#

Sometimes you can save an engine if it wasn’t driven too far into water but it’s rare cause it also damages all the electrical components and interior

#

Most people don’t know this but when you see an engine sized by “liter/litre” it’s because that’s the volume of air the engine hold

inland mauve
#

the only thing that Oracle managed to do by changing the licensing structure for Java to something insanely stupid is drive everyone to OpenJDK

odd sand
#

There's no need to flush them like that, and would that even get to the exhaust manifold where it would actually matter?>

#

I remember on my Saturn I took the manifold off at like 190k and parts of it were completely clogged with soot, so I chipped it out of there with a screwdriver and then used a bendable wire brush as best I could

deep sapphire
#

It would likely destroy the catalytic converter and O2 sensors

#

There is no reason to do this at all, if you are burning oil causing the level of soot that would cause damage you need to be looking elsewhere

sly elk

#

does it matter what kind of monitor you get for a computer or is there like compatibility type of things you have to consider

odd sand
#

I think there are generally cables that will work no matter which you buy, but sometimes it might be like Displayport to HDMI you need or something depending on the connections available

#

What you want to do with it and how much you want to spend are considerations of course. For gaming you want something at least 120hz. IPS panels are color accurate but TN are higher refresh rate and lower latency. This mattered more in the past, but as the chips powering them got more powerful, you can even get IPS panels with like 165hz+ and like 1ms or better latency now.

Other consideration is whether you want HDR or not.

Until the end of the 20th century, UPS delivery vehicles were equipped with manual transmissions and steering, with automatic transmissions and power steering adopted by newer vehicles.

For lower-volume delivery routes, UPS utilizes production-based vehicles, including minivans (including the Ford Transit Connect or the Ford Transit, and Dodge Grand Caravan C/V) and Mercedes-Benz (Dodge/Freightliner) Sprinter box vans. UPS has ordered Modec electric vans for its UK and German fleets. Energy costs play a huge part in the potential profitability of package delivery companies.[76]```

For many years, UPS trucks were powered by Detroit Diesel engines. However, the company has recently begun switching to vehicles with LS motors. LS motors are a type of engine designed and manufactured by General Motors. They are known for their high power and efficiency and are often used in performance cars. However, they are also well-suited for use in commercial vehicles like UPS trucks. The switch to LS motors is part of UPS’s ongoing effort to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. The company is also testing electric trucks, which may eventually replace UPS’s diesel-powered fleet.

In the years since 2007, Diesel engines have become burdened with UEGs. The UEG that cuts down on soot (still get just as much particulate matter, but now it's too small to see - and is small enough to avoid the "dust handlers" millions of years of evolution has put in our lungs) need to regenerate from time to time. This is done in one of two ways. Either sustained operation above a threshold speed (drop below the speed for an instant and the ECM will insist on starting from scratch), or "parked regen" (vehicle must remain stationary until regeneration is complete, can take 15–30 minutes). If a "rolling regen" hasn't happened by the time the UEG gets a certain percentage of soot loading, the ECM will give the driver a message along the lines of "You have 5 minutes to park and start a parked regen, or I'm shutting down the engine and won't allow it to be started until a dealer-only tool is used to clear the code". An in-city truck won't be operating above the threshold speed for long enough to do a "rolling regen", and a truck that demands a parked regen whenever it damn well wants will throw a few dozen monkey wrenches into the pickup/delivery schedule.

For operational reasons, UPS can't tolerate UEGs on their local delivery fleet. Since they're mandatory on post-2007 diesels, their only alternatives are gas engines and electrics. Due to the local delivery fleet returning to the terminal every night, I'm sure someone in a brown office is talking to Musk.```

so that answers your question of why they moved to the GM Vortec engines

ya know watching these videos led me to ev busses and then I was thinking

#

depending on the city you can do fun things like this!

#

no need to carry around a battery when you can just run power lines everywhere haha

I was on a bus like that going from Niko to some resort at a lake on top of a mountain and every switchback looks like you're narrowly avoiding the railing and plunging to your death by inches

#

oh yea

#

hell no

#

there was a really goofy pilot plan to run electric lines like that to/from the port of LA for trucks

#

but instead of using purpose built trucks they were trying to do some weird hybrid shit

sly elk

ugh the housing market shit is so stupid

#

one way or another you'll get fucked

#

I was looking at a nice apartment in a city near my office

#

it's okay, not too big, has a nice location, but not in the city centre or like too convenient

#

but it costs €400,000

#

for an apartment

The worst part is when you lose the lottery tho

#

even if I got a mortgage for that, which I won't because I am single, I would have to pay €1500 monthly

#

which is also what the rent would probably be if I rented an apartment in that neighbourhood
