I'm hoping that just the board borked, tbh it's the cheapest part in all the rig playdead

#

NEVERMIND IT'S STILL ALIVE but data salvaging is still in schedule

sly elk
#

most PSUs have some form of overcurrent protection and leaving them unplugged for a little bit will usually reset it

#

heheh my favorite one is when the psu is on its way out and you have to unplug it from the motherboard to get it to reset and power on again

#

I know stuff is up when the computer won't turn back on until I've done that >>

#

that reminds me

Mine is Corsair SF750, very uwu
Ya I unplugged for a while, it resetted back

sly elk
#

when my brother's computer fell off his table that one time

#

the only thing that broke was the power supply haha

golden stream
#

How tf haha

sly elk
#

I think one of the heatsinks fell off

#

I can't remember, fan was catching on it so I swapped the psu out

#

but I'm not 100% sure what it was. If I shake the psu around I can hear rattling inside but I couldn't see what it was -shrug-

I mean for everyday use? Shits been fine for the past million years. Although all it has are diagnostic tools and windows isos. It does have various drivers and stuff on it. But really all of it is just a copy of the master folder on my PC, I just use it to set up post install windows on new PCs

#

And if you are storing stuff long-term on any external without back up, your asking for it

buoyant falcon
#

I have FFXIV's sound out put set to my TV's sound bar via "App volume and device preferences," but every time I start the game up it comes out of my PC's speakers by default until I go in, open the drop down menu (which is still set to my sound bar) and pick the sound bar.

#

I'm not sure why it's doing this, but I feel like this rather defeats the purpose of this feature if I have to go in and manually change it every time. MiqoteDepressed

I have a fun Lodestone coding question, but not sure if that belongs here ponder
Does anyone know how to get this "Click to Show" to work? I looked it up and it should be the BBCode for [spoiler]. However, it's not working on Lodestone posts when I try but I see it on others.

they don't sell the colored trackpads separate from the imacs ;_;

cerulean talon

Tbh, I'm not a huge evga fan anyway, they were my last-resort vendor.

#

I tend towards gigabyte when I have a choice.

sly elk
#

yea bt who the hell is going to buy an imac just to get the trackpad lol

#

in the last 5 years I went kinda stir crazy so I've had asus, gigabyte, zotac, sapphire, and evga GPUs

cerulean talon
#

In the end though, as long as the card is compatible with a 3rd party waterblock, it doesn't matter much.

sly elk

golden stream

In AMD end, sapphire has decent cooling, design and at least it fits the case kind of design

sly elk

but it was sturdy af, no sag, nice finish

#

but the worst software of all of them >>

cerulean talon

I had a couple windforce 2080ti's I really liked.

sly elk
#

the asus card was a 1070

#

really pretty backplate, nice looking shroud

#

but it had the most flex of any gpu i've ever owned

#

and the software was stupid

cerulean talon
#

I had a weird mix of 1080ti's just due to purchasing timing. Then the 3xxx's I've had no choice in as both of them were "My systems are dying, I need a new one now"

void dove
#

had a gigabyte 560. then a mini gigabyte 1060 6gb, but got a evga 3070 this time around, but that was more that, its waht i managed to get my hands on during the shortage.

#

snatched the first thing i could find in stock 😄

sly elk
#

the zotac was a 1070ti amp extreme, I think it was the biggest GPU I've ever owned

cerulean talon
#

For being a SFF vendor, I've always been surprised how large zotac cards are.

real edge
#

every new gpu is too expensive for me now but I want an upgrade to my 1070 :<

sly elk
#

my only beef with the zotac was I couldn't spin the fans down to 0rpm

that really bothered me

cerulean talon
#

I need to order a 4090 soon-ish now that they're dropping to reasonable-ish prices.

a used 2080ti might be a good option considering they are under 400euro hmmm

#

it even has the darn slot for a tape

cerulean talon
#

I hate how much I love the look of that card.

#

I don't want the RGB, but I like the asthetic.

sly elk
#

I mean the evga also had a bricky aesthetic

#

but they made it look good

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, it's the rear grille that makes that slick tho.

sly elk
#

ya know what this reminds me of

#

sapphire's nitro 60 series cards

#

oo speaking of that

#

i like their 7900 too

cerulean talon
#

It's too futuristic imo.

#

That curved edge kills it for me.

sly elk
#

except

#

the backplate is FUGLY

cerulean talon
#

Oh yech. Hard pass.

sly elk
#

you HAVE to vertically mount it

#

it's too ugly to horizontal mount lol

#

ya know what always made me laugh with the 30 series cards was when people bought the asus white strix

#

only to immediately strip it and put a custom loop block on it

cerulean talon
#

Huh, the gigabyte 4090 aorus is nice looking.

sly elk
#

like people who were obsessed with flexing

#

no way

cerulean talon
sly elk
#

i mean it's better looking than the 30 series aorus but

cerulean talon
#

Nah, the watercooled one.

sly elk
#

oh that one's sweet

cerulean talon
#

Yeah.

sly elk
#

although they are still SO WIDE

#

i love this

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, but as a no-sider for my cases, idgaf.

sly elk
#

there was another card I can't remember now

#

hmm

cerulean talon
#

My only concern is finding somewhere to put that radiator.

#

:D

sly elk
#

oh right

#

suprim lol

cerulean talon
#

I don't think I've got room for a 360 in the case, might have to live outside.

wide hill
#

is there a tool that combines 2 displayports into a single monitor?

sly elk
#

which case?

#

i was thinking about getting an alphacool 360 for my 3080ti lol

#

maybe it'd make things quieter >>

cerulean talon
#

I'd have to pull it, but the 360 space in there is used by I think the CPU cooler atm.

sly elk
#

as it stands i have a 360 on the top but i've got room for a 360 on the front 😄

cerulean talon
#

I could stand up and look, but that's effort.

sly elk
#

mmm

#

mac pros are nice >>

#

waste of money but nice

cerulean talon
#

I don't like em, but I'm not a mac guy at all.

sly elk
#

i have a love/hate with apple

cerulean talon
#

I want arm on desktops, just not apple. :P

#

I don't like the closed ecosystem.

sly elk
#

i don't like the way they're doing ARM

#

and I fucking hate the "ecosystem"

#

fuck that shit man

cerulean talon
#

I understand it, and for most people, I kinda prefer ir.

#

*it.

sly elk
#

I really wish they'd just focus on making stuff good on its own

#

if that makes sense

cerulean talon
#

I'm also perfectly fine accepting that /I/ am the one that mucks up my environment, and I get to fix it when I break it.

#

:P

sly elk
#

but they've gotten a little lazy and rely on that sweet vendor lock in

#

for example, if you use an iphone and don't have icloud

cerulean talon
#

And yeah, I think the m2 chip would be sweet as it's own processor with standards and compete proper, but it's not what they want.

#

A2? I can't recall their naming scheme offhand.

sly elk
#

the phone will get super obnoxious reminding you that you don't have icloud and OMG YOU WONT HAVE BACKUPS AND YOU ONLY HAVE 20% SPACE LEFT

#

YOU SHOULD GET ICLOUD NOW

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, pass please, I already don't like the google integration on android and really want my stupid linux phone to show up to get away from that.

sly elk
#

^ yea google is similarly obnoxious about it lol

cerulean talon
#

Librem's only been on order 2 years so far. Doing good.

sly elk
#

i've been using onedrive lately since 1tb came with office 365 and I got that cheap

#

^ I bet they'd freak out if a website turned on their webcam

cerulean talon
#

This seems like a good problem for .NET developers, have fun.

modern iris
#

what

cerulean talon
#

Y'all already rely on magic everything, so why not turn a LED monitor into a camera.

royal forge
#

Just turn off the monitor then its a mirror 4head

sly elk
#

someone suggested it just show a picture of the owner of the site

royal forge
sly elk
#

but yea I hate how apple's "ecosystem" works

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, I almost want to see if you could do that with a LED monitor, just cycle hard through the color filters and convince the screen to output data instead.

#

Hrm.

sly elk
#

plus icloud feels so unreliable

#

like if you have icloud and a few macs, right

#

and you leave one be for a while

cerulean talon
sly elk
#

100% chance it'll log out of icloud and need you to accept new TOS and

#

and do something stupid

cerulean talon
#

Wait, really?

sly elk
#

yep

cerulean talon
#

That's uh. Special.

sly elk
#

the icloud login times out after a while

#

and they rather regularly force new terms of service

#

and it'll do really stupid shit like

cerulean talon
#

I'll just keep syncing everything important to rsync.net.

#

They work exactly how I expect every time.

sly elk
#

"oh we paused all your cloud syncing because you haven't accepted the new terms of service yet"

#

-clicks notification- -it opens system prefs-

#

-tos never pops up-

#

^ one of my macs did this for like 3 months

#

I can't remember what the stupid workaround was but eventually a software update fixed the broken terms of service box haha

wide hill
modern iris
#

Apple is fun anyway. Can't use my apple ID cause I don't have the phone number anymore and they only accept that one or another one I have registerd. I don't have another one. XD

#

Sorry apple I don't have 2 iPhones like you want me too

cerulean talon
#

I've seriously been considering something like a twilio number or something for any account I consider remotely important these days.

#

Recovery via 2fa sms is just so annoying as a last resort given how terrible cell companies are.

modern iris
#

I don't have my number anywhere on the internet. If it requires my phone numer I won't use the service anymore

sly elk
#

I love the apple watch BUT

#

say you ignore your software updates for like a year

golden stream
sly elk
#

if you do that and then finally give in and update your iphone!

modern iris
sly elk
#

it will refuse to connectto the watch

#

and then you got o update your watch

#

and it goes

modern iris
#

Also very great

cerulean talon
sly elk
#

hey you need to accept the terms of service from the apple watch app on your iphone

#

and you go to od that and your iphone is like

golden stream
sly elk
#

EW YOUR WATCH IS OUT OF DATE UPGRADE THE OS ON IT

cerulean talon
#

Having a tree-based recovery system means there's a root of trust somewhere.

sly elk
#

so you kinda have to get the watch app to glitch to let you accept the TOS

cerulean talon
sly elk
#

but there is one thing i like about apple

wide hill
cerulean talon
#

One of my emergency backup routes is a friend having access to a root level account on one of my boxes which contains the encryption key to my secure NAS which can get them elsehwere.

Imagine being able to repair later macs. I don't think that will be an option.

Time to but framework. Well even not a fan of those. tho

cerulean talon

I'd like to get something decent-ish to play with ARM builds in the house.

But there's so few good options.

I think the framework is one of the most beautiful laptops I've seen, in terms of the inside

ARM on the other hand I'd like to have a machine to compile for to target gravaton.

#

But yanno, you really need a gravaton-style arm chip to compile for their hw exts.

sly elk
#

the only nice thing is the io ports are separate modules

so you don't have to trash a board because the hdmi port wore out

cerulean talon

That's a hella large amount of power reg on the ight.

modern iris
cerulean talon

Like damn, that's some regulation.

I wonder how many phases that setup is.

modern iris
#

Question is how long will it take till M2 or M3 or that ever is in iPhones

#

Once chip to power them all.

sly elk
#

I mean

#

they use similar cores it's just the m2 has more 😄

#

well, more everything else too but

golden stream
#

Innit m2 is just m1 refresh?

sly elk
#

Yep

golden stream
#

Huhhhh

#

Ya I saw Lina inspected m2 chip the other day

modern iris
#

Fair enough. I'm 0 into apple I have no clue what they are doing. We don't develop for apple at work either so no reason for me to look into that sorta stuff.

This is a maxed-out M1 MacBook Air mind you

cerulean talon
#

Hrm, m2 does have a different micro-arch apparently

#

Also, has anyone tested the ARC cards to see how they are in general?

#

I kinda want one for transcoding purposes.

golden stream
#

Iirc seems good in AV1 stuff?

#

Not really tho

cerulean talon
#

Yeh, that'd be my target.

#

They're auctually reasonably priced so it's tempting.

golden stream
#

Tho lemme see if there is any cheapo ARC in my place

cerulean talon
#

Then I'd have team red, green and blue under one roof.

golden stream
#

Holup the latest ARC?

cerulean talon
#

A770's like 400$

#

Like that's cheap enough I'd consider getting one just to play with. Hah.

golden stream
#

O there is one in my place for like........180 buck or something but A380

cerulean talon
#

Ye, i'd like a little more vram in case I want to use it for something else.

golden stream
#

Make sense, that one is 6gb mem and pretty low bus

cerulean talon
#

I'd be super interested if it's good enough to do VM passthrough and render games for VR.

#

Which it seems like the opnion is "maybe"

golden stream
#

Wait wut just 75W??

cerulean talon
#

I don't see any power connectors, so prolly on the A380.

golden stream
#

Ya prob A380

cerulean talon
#

750/770 both have dual PCIe powers, so probally 250-300-ish w.

golden stream
#

Tbh the A77016gb price is p nice I guess

#

Oh 225W

#

If you count wikipedia

cerulean talon
#

Oh it's a 4+3, not 4+4

golden stream
#

So roughly 250w then

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, that seems about right.

#

Hrm, might have to give that a shot at some point. Seems like drivers are shoddy, but it's intel, so.

golden stream
#

Now the bigger thingy, howz le driver tho

cerulean talon
#

I mean, it's intel, so I assume bad.

golden stream
#

Also Intel is the cheaper gateway for AV1

cerulean talon
#

It's just a question of /how/ bad >.>

golden stream
#

^

#

Tho lemme dig, iirc LTT did a 1 month ARC challenge

cerulean talon
#

There's "I'm just gonna be depressed for awhile" bad, then there's "I'm using intel" bad.

golden stream
#

nvidia last driver lmao

cerulean talon
#

I was torn on that or blaming it on discord.

#

As it seems like both of them were doing something stupid.

golden stream
#

Discord is weirdly stupid tho

cerulean talon
#

I mean, electron apps are stupid in general.

#

If one crashes on my desktop, it breaks the entire RTC system and I can't use voice or video chat.

#

It's great.

golden stream

Tfw discord dev does not know linux haha

#

"Have you try running discord without it?"
"Sir it's the whole op system"

cerulean talon
#

Seems accurate.

golden stream
#

Waitaminute wat, only support dx12 + vulkan but not olders?????

#

I mean ARC

sharp star
cerulean talon
#

Interesting.

#

It feels like a very intel choice.

golden stream
#

For dx9, it's emulation dx9 in dx12 haha

sharp star
#

and now it can run DX9 games and R6S (because that was one of the games it had issues with) just fine

golden stream
#

But prop for ARC dev lol

modern iris
golden stream

Win8 was fine, had hardware compatibility issues and other teething issues because it introduced a bunch of back-end changes as well.
same issue with any new Major windows core changes, (like vista).
its not "bad" but it isn't as stable as the previous because of the changes .
next iteration then improves it and software adapts, (so windows 10)

sharp star

Uh lemme pull it up, but the tl;dr was that their earnings or something took a bigger than normal dent
