#Katana weapon type

I think they're trying to avoid overtly Eastern style weapons for now, but definitely should be an option if we get to travel to different islands
If that happens:
- Katana will be Long Blade (Primary)
- Wakizashi will be Short Blade (Sidearm)
- Nodachi will be Greatsword (Primary)
- Naginata will be Polearm (Primary)
But yeah, I do think they will be avoiding Eastern Weapons and Armor as Soulframe is generally focused on Medieval/Celtic designs.
We do have the Precklies flyblade though, it looks like an Eastern weapon, Kunai. Maybe I'm just imagining things.
I highly doubt we will get scythes or katanas. When we get the inevitable desert island (atajan and camel hint at this), I can see khopesh and curved swords etc though
Yeah, with the existence of Warframe having eastern inspired weapons. I am positive that DE won't give us eastern weapons in Soulframe.
It would be like: "Oh this is like the same weapon from Warframe, but it's in Soulframe"
We do have the Precklies flyblade though, it looks like an Eastern weapon, Kunai
Absolutely true, Precklies and to an extent Skilter are very Japanese coded in their design. However, throwing knives are pretty pervasive across old Western culture as well and those designs have a lot of overlap with kunai to begin with, so it feels less out of place.
It'd be much harder to make the same argument for a curved single edge long blade like katanas
Go look up "Throwing Dirk" images. They're all shapes, but follow certain obvious parameters, and a fair few of them look like kunai and similar throwing weapons.
Turns out, when you need to throw a knife, there's just a few designs that start coming out on top really fast. Convergent engineering at its finest.
I mean really, the only thing setting the precklies apart as "eastern" is that distinctive iron loop on the pommel. If they axed that, it would just be a cheap cast iron throwing knife.
i like katanas
I think they could do it in a way that manages to give a fantasy element without it being a copy/paste katana asset. The paragon blade is already a single edge (mostly) greatsword as an example.
Maybe something like the grynn short blade from the pommel down and then a single, slightly curved edge from there. Doesn't have to be absent the fantasy elements.
The mockery weapons are quite goofy looking. They already have a mix of blade geometries/shapes
+1, they're cool, but I don't think they should be a high priority.
I don't think they would infringe on Soulframe's distinctness to Warframe if present - unless it would be the exact same moveset from Warframe, which is doubtful.
-1 for actual katana inspired weapons, I'd leave that for warframe
+1 for shamshir, talwar or other sabres that are curved, but have different mmm "origin" per se.
Personally, I just want sheathed sword fighting styles. Not specifically a katana, but something similar to Iaido and Iaijutsu.
The art of sheathing and unsheathing a weapon is very appealing to me.
Why are you guys making this a big deal 😭
They can just add ONE long blade that resembles a single-edged sword with a sheath and people would be happy, literally that's it, a single weeb weapon wouldn't hurt at all
It doesn't have to be a new weapon type or anything, even the dewelion has it's own unique attack. I actually believe they would add this some time in the future, it's just bound to happen in game in this day and age, even Elden Ring and BGIII has it now, and they're also set in a medieval-ish world.
Obviously they won't clutter the game by making each sword a different type, the category is generalized as "Long Blade" for a reason
it would genuinly suck in soulframe. those type of combat are basicly made for sparring, and had no actual combat usage. Them implementing them would lead to the same issues that greatsword has rn, and it's the fact you'll get smacked because everything else is based on real life weapon combat. GS gets ultra punished because it's slow and heavy, leaving you wide open, and draw techniques will get the same because they are impractical af. and if they aren't, they're just going to look ultra cartoony because they'll have to brute force them into the game flow
I'm confused on how the aspect of sheathing and unsheathing your weapon to attack would look cartoony and be brute forced into the game flow. Where are you getting this from?
Games like Monster Hunter and Elden Ring do very well with translating Iaido in game while maintaining the slow approach to combat. Even α Patroklos from Soul Calibur V handles a sheathed sword fighting style quite well.
If we're talking about realism, Soulframe's melee combat is very unrealistic. Real, experienced fighters would not swing weapons nearly as slowly as they do in Soulframe. Especially not with how dramatic their recovery is; The Envoy always overextends their swings.
first, realism is a slider, not a binary situation. it's all level of adapting what you want to your medium. and you do that, because stylistic coherence is important. I'm one of those people that study historical weapon cambat, i got my manuals, and when it comes to soulframe, i can actually name each longsword moves by their names, because they come out straight from my books, which the devs themselves they used as base for combat.
the game you cite as "handling that well" actually have different flow and rigor, to a point where i feel like you never bothered to actually check those game before taking them as example. ER makes your blade magicly snap into it's sheathe, and MH makes you actually set up for it, because in that game sheathing is actually a mechanic. and that's withouteven pointing out how their flow is different. But also, using freaking soul calibur, the beak of cartoony, as an example of how unsheating can be done well??
Kinda early to see the rest of world.
+1 let's get katana like weapons with a proper stance and moveset. Id also like to see sabers with a proper moveset. Steve has talked a lot about pirates so I except we will see some curved swords.
I'm just failing to understand how having a sheathing weapon inspired by Iaido is too much for a fantasy RPG that literally lets you fling magic and summon animals.
As you said, realism is a slider, but what makes weapons that are built around the aspect of sheathing too unrealistic and cartoony for Soulframe? I'm no expert on this stuff, but Soulframe is a fantasy RPG. Surely, that style of weapon would fit fine.
The mockery armor has Asian influence. People want to keep their fantasy medieval europe, but soulframe is already borrowing from so many cultures and time eras that its all out the window.
Steve has said many different weapon types, so you know were gonna get some wild stuff.
Im gonna be real here, there’s already way too many weapons that all feel very similar to eachother. Way too many daggers, for sure. Single swords are up there as well, not really sure I want to throw katanas into the game right now.
Maybe after the “weapon manuscripts” system steve’s been talking about gets implemented, but as it is, any new sword would have to have something really unique to stand out from Marrows, Igne Morra, Dewelion, Vetch, and so on.
of course we need katanas no question
I mean obviously people requesting katanas want a totally different moveset and animation from longswords. Katana is a type of sword but its stances are wildly different. Absolutely deserves its own grip type tree and separate category.
So... basically another weapon art called Katana for katanas?
Then Marrow's Bane should also have a separate category called cleavers
A mockery katana to go with the mockery samurai-looking armor.
I see no reason to not introduce alternative weapon cultures in other regions later on.
Desert island somewhere, a Japanese inspired island somewhere else.
Otherwise, as mentioned by Shade above, it would go well with the mockery-theme.
The Mockeries already have two cleavers and a longsword
1 cleaver, 1 long blade, and 1 with a unique moveset the community sometimes calls Saber
