So, how flexible are the starting pacts in this game? Like can you make a melee Oscelda, or is it tricky to get a Spirit based melee weapon early on?

i would say it isn't that tricky, mainly because there's nothing forcing you to run spirit with oscelda. there aren't a lot of spirit-scaling melee weapons and the ones that do exist still require some investment, however small, in either courage or grace in order to be effective.

weapon scaling is a bigger deal imo, since usually most of your damage will be from your weapons. abilities tend to be mostly utility, there are a few that deal damage directly and a few that enable big damage but you still won't get very far with them without investment in your weapons

more or less? oscelda in particular has a lot of utility in its 1st and 3rd ability (being hard CC and stagger buildup), and of course its heal is always pretty comfy to have around. you don't need to min-max any of those abilities to get decent use out of them.

your weapons, on the other hand, need to be powerful otherwise you're gonna find that you can't really hurt anything after a while

it might also be worth considering the secondary effects of each of the virtues; courage gives extra hp, spirit reduces ability cooldown, grace increases stealth damage. those can sorta-kinda help define your playstyle, if you want to be more tanky, or you want to cast spells more often, or you want to be sneaky...

Yes I'm a Grace main with an addiction to dodge, headshots, and perfect throws. Yes I'm using a polearm. Even oversized maces can be dexterity weapons.

of the 8 weapon types with sub types, it only benefits bows and the pure grace weapons for scaling
the extra benefits it has are all niche and situational. the only useful one being extra headshot damage(which only bows effectively use)
however this is good in a bad way cause u just nuke bosses and dont engage with them
so case point, only specific weapons can use it, its stats dont mean anything or are unhealthy for the game.
it need simplified into a general buff that effects everything positively like attack speed or movement speed and removed extra damage scaling

There are a solid handful of melees that can use it, throws and arcanics can headshot, and Grace actually needs a nerf.

And it's not only headshots, anything that forces unaware gives you that bonus on any attack, including Rune-infused heavies.

Or any time you get a finisher.

Like, shortblade, flintsmoke, stab, one-shot an Agari.

The scaling is cracked.

Double-edged. You can get triple the rate of Arcanic casts at the cost of being super squish, so you need to know what you're doing on a pure build.

I keep it at 15 with Grace cus even 20% CD reduction is great.

nobody is throwing there weapons enough to build for it, magic weapons headshots are wildly inconsistent and are also not something to be considered with builds
and finishers and stealth attacks dont come up enough to effect builds(and stealth is just broken but thats a whole other issue)

Bows flyblades short swords, both dual and dagger, and Long swords, Rapiers and Dwellion. All have the best scaling with grace you get the highest weapon and armor scaling with pure grace builds. Grace scaling bonuses stack with Headshot and stealth bonuses both of them also scaling with grace. I will give you the Headshot multiplier specifically because only Bows and Flyblades actually get the bonus this prelude. Stealth strikes and stagger crits also get grace scaling increasing that damage further

This is simply incorrect, certain weapon types have their biggest DPS on throws, like daggers and polearms. I throw my pointy stick constantly for big damage, and both Duelo and Mora's Hand can abuse it.

Cus they have good arcanics that can headshot.

But yeah, Grace still scales weapons, and has plenty of good options, including Dewelion as one of the strongest current weapons. If you make any effort to use headshots or finishers, you also consistently get the crit bonus helping you out. The only reason Grace doesn't feel useful outside of bosses is because you're not engaging with mechanics.

And that isn't the fault of the system.

Like, Tempest loves it cus it's all finisher spam, same with Rood.

It's just most weapons are bad at it.

Use Igne Mora for a while and learn how to lean you swings and you'll land quite a few multihits.

If you hold down a direction when swinging, it'll override the soft lock, most of the time.

That system is still a bit unstable.

But weapons are capable of hitting more than one guy at base.

It is also important to not be vague or misleading about the state of the game. We're well into the depths of pre-alpha in that basic features are being actively developed and can change at any time, revamps are common and another one is right around the corner.

So the state of the game is still very much unstable, even if very enjoyable in my experience.

People should know what they're walking into there, we're here to test and provide feedback for a developing game.

Man Shield is actually very good with Rood's pact.

It hits fast but still hard enough to usually stagger guys in one heavy or throw to the face under Behest.

So every Behest just turns into finisher spam.

Having a good throw is also always nice.

Not even a charged heavy, just a heavy.

So it's just a conga line of heavies chained into finishers.

I mean, it depends on what you rolled, some tempers are better than others and I'd just keep your best one. I have a pile I'm saving for whatever 'melting down' system that we end up having in P15, just in case.

Hit J and check your journal for any objectives. There is a birdy icon top right of your screen while in journal to set objective to be tracked by bird.

Courage is what you want if you wanna be more bulkly and gives more health and harder hitting with melee based weapons
spirit reduces cool downs for abilities and buffs magik weapons which tend to be more spirit based anyway
grace favours bows and increases headshot and finisher damage
