Simply a progression system would not go hand in hand with geronimo
why not
It's 4 in the morning in my country and I'm sleepy, I'll explain why later
gameloop has been a frequent issue with these types of games (as one dev stated)
I can give you examples:
Ready Or Not.
Ground Branch.
Zero Hour.
Insurgency.
Arma 3.
Squad.
Rising Storm.
Etc...
I'm seriously sleepy, I'll explain it briefly.
The tactical games progression system is not an artificial unlocking system, it is rather a natural system of trial and error, something like learning.
This is not rpg. I hate games where you have to unlock stuff (which should be given without any limit since they can acquire almost any gear they want). Also no need to worry about ramboing. Most of people who loves this genre won't do that anyway. Progression isn't point of this type of game. Fun part comes from teamworks, communication, planning and executing the mission in a realistic and perfect manner as possible.
Maybe as you play and get better and “level up” you could just earn more maps and scenarios to play? The issue with a level up progression system in this case would be that players would break ranks and try to get kills before their team does. I don’t think I’d like it much, personally
Geronimo seems more like a sandbox game to me so I don’t think progression would be very fitting, especially with the prevalence of mods that would make unlocking things obsolete
But I wouldn’t mind a ranking system that is just there to reflect your playtime in the game. Milsim groups could make use of this i.e must be level X to join
