Hi Guys - im loving the game its exactly what VR needs - im very sure this game will be very popular - just a question though - will i be able to host a dedicated server on my hardware ? im in South Africa and the ping to the EU and US is terrible.

#

i also have a beefey server which i would like to make use of instead of paying nitrado or Gportal.

it was stated like 5 hours ago that the servers run on like AWS or something meaning that they cant actually do this feature JUST YET bc of that AWS, once they switch to something new sometime late January or sometime during febuary or even just right after early access is released then they should be able to add this feature and people will be able to make modded games and community maps and everything like that

#

should be fun to see once they add that cant wait to play modded strayed

I've doing some minor work at getting the servers to work for all 3 major desktop platforms but even if we didn't have the AWS problem we also have the problem where running the server requires knowledge of how to configure it, so documentation / operation instructions are necessary too

Thanks @rare sedge , understandable with the AWS integration , and I understand that the game is very new and still has a way to go , I'm glad that your open to having private dedicated servers running as something that is planned , I'm sure this game will be a massive hit and having community servers will boost its popularity even further. I am also enjoying the playtest , great fun !!

Hi Just checking up - are there any plans for dedicated servers - we are quite far from the current official servers so the ping is not great for us - and we have infrustructure to host

Hi - is there any movement on this ? the ping is so bad in South Africa i cant play on any of the EU or US servers - I will definately buy the game if server owners can be accommodated but if there are no private dedicated servers there is currently no point yet

i believe private servers have been postponed due to the fact that if you add private servers that can take players away from dedicated servers, making the game less enjoyable overall, bc its better to have a few full servers then a hundred nearly empty ones, as for dedicated servers im not sure why we have not gotten servers for more regions yet, probably because there arent enough players in say an african servers to fill the server completely, even then i think the fact we have 8 servers means they could spare a server or two for other regions such as africa, south america, or oceania.

I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to force players to have unplayable ping , ppl with bad ping will always loose and what's the point of a full server if only some players have the right conditions to be competitive, Most people in my region are talking to the developer's of GRIM which is similar to Strayed , things seem to be looking positive there with regards to dedicated servers , in my opinion it's a bit of a scam to have it in the store in regions that you don't plan on supporting or providing the tools to host privately

At least for me anything under 150ping is very playable

# finite gale Yes because other regions don't even bother playing

I can assure you we're looking into ways to help other regions have a playable experience, we avoided using the Cape Town region in AWS since it's extremely niche and has massive fees per server we host.

If you know of any good server providers in South Africa that info would be appreciated

I will have a look but AWS would be the best but as you mentioned it's expensive , I know this first hand because my company uses them and I manage those cloud resources. Other wise release dedicated server files , your concurrent player base on steam will sky rocket globally and I doubt your official servers will loose playerbase

Our other worry with releasing the files though is that our servers aren't architected to be easy to run, so there's some work that needs to be done on our behalf to streamline servers

#

Unless all of our players want to run Linux I don't think they'd be happy with how its setup rn lol

I see lol

They can docker 😉

Well we do use docker internally so we could release a compose file when the time comes :)
