I think it’s a dilemma either way and a matter of personal priorities:

• a) ||I personally think that you get more out of the ending with context from some of the side stuff, especially companion quests, and it also feels awkward [to me personally/subjectively] to go continue playing the game after the credits roll so I prefer doing all my exploration first||
• b) ||However, if you do side content first, you’ll likely completely steamroll the final boss/area, which could be anticlimactic (unless you heavily self-nerf, such as de-equipping Painted Power, using a recoat to reset all of your leveled attributes and leaving them at zero, etc.)||

So very much a case of picking your poison

I personally went ||with option a for two reasons: 1) the emotional catharsis of ending with credits and also the emotional dissonance of continuing to explore the Canvas after the ending outweighed, for me, the cons of b||

And also ||2) b is a symptom of being less optimized to begin with; in my position, even if I went straight to Renoir immediately with just my Act 2 build and level and only equipped Painted Power, I still would have steamrolled him 💀 so in my case doing the additional content doesn’t actually change much regarding the final area||

But plenty of arguments for b, also

There’s also b+, which is ||do companion sidequests first and then go straight to Renoir|| as a sort of compromise

my friend posted one of the boss theme songs on spotify and that jogged my memory of a thing I saw ||about Alicia's letter||
ENDING SPOILERS ||The Renoir boss song is titled "A lifetime to love" in French which is the same as the title "A life to love" for Verso's ending in English. Une vie à peindre is the title for the final boss theme and means a lifetime to paint similar to Maelle's ending "A life to paint". There's no corresponding song for Painted Alicia's letter titled "Une vie à rêver" which is "a life to dream" but it thematically matches those titles. In the letter you could interpret her last words meant for Maelle/Alicia to "find another way" despite the clash between either of their families fates: "what will you paint?" And ofc we never get that answer. I think thats the intended tragedy of another possibility that could've been. 😭This is kinda brilliant if that's the intention||

As far as that specific place goes though ||there are many battles, and they get progressively more difficult, and you can stop at any point. So honestly I would go in, go as far as you can, get the rewards from doing so, and then back out when you hit a wall to explore elsewhere and come back later||

Post Act two ||what is chosen path? I came across and it asked me to choose a character to do it and I got decision paralysis and left||

||It's a collection of 1v1s where you can only use each character once (so if you use Maelle to beat one of the bosses, you cannot use her for any of the remaining 4). The bosses there are all pretty weak though so I wouldn't stress it too much; just equip the various Solo Fighter pictos on everyone and go to town||

If you still have decision paralysis I am more than happy to offer matchup advice based on weaknesses (ex: "the enemy of this path is weak to all elemental damage so Lune is good here", or "the enemy of this path is weak to dark, so [P4] ||Sciel|| is good here", etc.), but only if you ask of course

But that's how I picked anyways and then it didn't actually matter because I one-turned all of them anyways

  • ||rec: Maelle (has many strong fire skills, though you can also ignore element and nuke with strong physical/void skills)||
• ||Benisseur: weak to ice, dark; resists earth, light||
  • ||rec: Monoco (depends on what skills you've learned, but he has a lot of very strong ice and dark options)||
• ||Stalact: weak to fire/ice; absorbs ice/fire (switches depending on stance)||
  • ||rec: Verso (no particular reason, just process of elimination because the other 4 have strong matchups) (also bragging rights to hold over Monoco)||
• ||Jar: weak to ice, fire, earth, lightning; resists physical||

||I do think 50x is possible for me if I really lock in (would basically require me to perfectly parry at minimum 4-5 of his turns (depends on how nice roulette is to me, also), which is still tough as hell but not impossible), but 100x is realistically probably beyond my patience-zone at this point 🥲 ||

||Hmm....Sciel's primary "weakness" in endgame has always been that she's very good at scaling damage but not so much upfront burst (at least compared to the likes of Maelle). And I think for 50x HP Simon, Maelle still probably pulls ahead in the race to deal 2.5bil first. But for 100x HP Simon, when he has 5bil HP.... I wonder if it would take fewer turns for an optimized Sciel End Slice build to hit that necessary damage than my current Maelle Gommage one-shot...||

I truly believe that he is a good, kind, and caring person who genuinely cares for all of these people, and who probably feels an extraordinary amount of pain, and guilt, on their behalf. He's not some unfeeling, unempathetic sociopath. The fact that he goes through what he does, doing all of this for love, and against love, carrying all of the weight and emotional baggage that he does... he's just such a compelling character||

||Speaking of, each time I rewatch the sequences immediately before, during, and after the final Renoir fight, I pick up so many little things about Maelle. All the times she'll try to convince Papa that she understands his message and but then lets slip by referring to the Canvas as "home" (multiple times), or referring to/talking to Verso as if he were the blood, unpainted brother (especially hits immediately after the duel as Maelle, when Verso's fading and you see Maelle saying "I just wanted to live this lifetime together. This lifetime that as stolen from us. Please, brother..." to Painted Verso...)||

||i also don't think that he was fully on board with erasing the canvas along the journey from the beginning, he looked conflicted. he did end up caring a lot about the world and the people he's met, what really convinced him was aline suffering because he didn't just see his "own mother" (again, lots of complex emotions here because while he is not verso, he still holds love for everyone that verso held love for and more) but he also saw his own sister ending up in the same situation. and really it goes back to identity again. he's been constantly split between "original verso" and himself, never allowed to fully be one or the other, never allowed to fully love people as one or the other. each time he tried, they were taken away from him and he was tired of losing them. sure, he was selfish for it, but it cannot be said that it wasn't out of love, because it was||

||but also lots of other little details, like her body language, facial expressions (oh my god the facial expressions are so subtle yet so good for all of Maelle from this point all the way through the Life to Paint epilogue), the shifts in the music (I will never forget the chills I felt my first time playing when she turned to Renoir to say "You can [trust me]" and the strings immediately change to a minor key it's so good)||

||when she reassured verso that he was his own person while also being overly familiar and resting her head on his shoulder despite there being no indication that prior to the reveal they were at that stage of physical affection yet. she was saying something that she did not mean at all and verso felt it 😭||

how i feel pouring my heart out while talking about this game

My read was that he was initially at least determined to kick Aline out of the Canvas in Act 2, though feeling horribly conflicted about it, both to save her but also in the hopes that Renoir's Gommage would free him (the way he sat on the pier and closed his eyes as the Gommage Wave hit the city felt like a kind of acceptance of fate...and then it ended up just passing over him and hitting everyone else) (and then you see this again in the beginning of Act 3 when Renoir begins to unpaint him and you see Verso just quietly accepting it, before Maelle uses her powers to keep him intact and drag him with her). But then in Act 3 you start to feel like he is willing to trust in Maelle and get on board with kicking Renoir out and rebuilding Lumiere... up until the end when Aline comes back into the Canvas (you can see how devastated he looks when it happens) (and I both love and hate the way the game frames the return and the ensuing Giant Woman standing up to knock Sirene over as some hype comeback moment (love because of the way it plays so much with expectations and general JRPG conventions because normally this kind of thing would be hype but instead all you feel is dread and despair and the intentional irony is delicious) (hate because some people unfortunately do not have the media literacy to immediately comprehend the horrifying implications of Aline jumping back in and just unironically cheer "YEAH PAINTRESS IS ON OUR SIDE NOW, BIG KAIJU FIGHT, THIS IS SO COOL" and every time I see this on a stream/video I just 💀 )) but also following that up with seeing the state of Aline on the outside of the Canvas, and then the final nail in the coffin being Maelle's lie to Renoir...||

||The whole game but especially the end of the story plays with so many classic JRPG tropes in such a neat way. Like on it's face, the broad strokes narrative of "chosen teenage heroine finds hidden power and uses it to claim freedom from her godlike father" (along other tropes like "previous antagonist comes back to help us fight back against the REAL final boss") should feel epic and awesome and familiar but it's not because there are so many caveats and nuances tacked on to make those surface-level highlights have so much more depth and complexity and it's so good||

||and it's the perfect buildup for the verso vs maelle ending because they let you see the consequences of it all before you get to experience it. you feel bad knowing the fate of this family because you become their enabler by defeating renoir. meanwhile, on the other hand, you have the journey that you've went through. like did gustave's sacrifice not matter in the slightest? the game tries to make you feel so much for everyone involved and you feel like you're being pulled in all directions||

ending spoilers ||i've been thinking a lot about this too because one of my favorite tropes is "character that we never got to meet but haunts the narrative". and yes, while we have painted verso, he is still different from original verso and they've done so well in making me grieve for the original verso too. like you can see his art and see what kind of person he was. the fact that clea's pet turtle and his plushie are "neighbors". his dog is a gestral that's the most loyal companion he's ever had. it just screams "he was the joy of the family and you can see why". devastating lmao||

[Post-Act 2] ||Before saying anything else, I want to preface that, regardless of my personal feelings, I intend to abide by the community consensus. But I think the more I sit on it, the more I personally feel like the existence of an Act 3 is not a spoiler in and of itself. Ignoring the fact that the devs seem to think nothing of it since they openly label Act 3 related patch notes as such, I think rather than obscuring (heh) the continuation of the game after Act 2, it intentionally plays with the audience expectation/understanding of a 3-Act story structure (alongside other hints like the parts of the map you can’t get to yet, or incomplete camp relationships). In other words, the narrative is using dramatic irony, in which it intentionally uses the audience’s foreknowledge to set a particular tone. Similar cases would be like how Romeo & Juliet starts with telling you the tale ends in tragic death, or the Star Wars prequels being written with the expectation that much of the audience knows that Anakin becomes Vader and it’s more about invoking that feeling of spiraling dread as you watch the descent happen, rather than him being Vader meant as a surprise plot twist. In the same vein, I truly feel like the expected audience reaction is NOT to end the Paintress fight unironically going “haha yay yippee we did it game over!” but for the atmosphere to intentionally feel “off” because you know the story can’t end here. You are intended to spend the whole Lumiere return and celebration with a creeping dread and anxiety in the back of your mind, waiting for the other shoe to drop, with tension gradually building with the letter until it finally explodes with the mass gommage. And it’s still a surprise! The sheer gravity of it anyways. But it’s a narrative release of building tension like how with jumpscares in a horror game, you’re still expecting something to happen as you walk through the dark corridor and it’s not about if, but when)||

||And again, regardless of Sandfall’s devs openly putting in Act 3 in patch notes, and despite my own personal feelings on the matter, I will ultimately respect what the majority of our community decides on doing. But I personally think just the mere existence of “Act 3” is not a heavy spoiler in and of itself, and in fact adds to the narrative experience.||

||Like obviously more specific plot stuff like saying “The Paintress is not the final boss” to someone not at the end of Act 2, or “Renoir gommages all of Lumiere”, etc. are absolutely big spoilers that should be avoided at all costs. But seeing an [Act 3] spoiler tag next to a block of spoilered text should be perfectly fine imo||

||I think specifically the Alicia Epilogue should still be tagged as [Post-Act 2] regardless of whether we make the shift though, since Act 3 proper doesn’t begin until after that||

So I got into a conversation with some people on the internet about how much investment you'd need to cleanly one-shot [endgame optional boss] ||Simon||, and that got me interested in trying some experiments. Up until now I've been pushing to see what the highest amount of damage I could do in a single turn was, but now I wanted to take off a bunch of pictos/luminas and try to find what the least amount of lumina investment needed for the one-shot is.

And the result is....way cheaper than I expected

I found a setup, that requires no Roulette-rerolling (but if you wanted to do that, you could get away with even less lumina spent) that costs:

• 71 lumina on [P4] ||Sciel||, 40 lumina on [P5] ||Verso||, and 56 lumina on [P3] ||Maelle|| and no pictos equipped (which means that the actual lumina cost is MUCH lower since you can equip 3 luminas worth of pictos on each of them to drastically reduce cost)

I'm actually genuinely shocked at how low the investment needed is to guarantee a one-shot on the hardest postgame superboss, with just double digit lumina investment (and if you equip the most expensive luminas as pictos, it takes less than 30 lumina points per character) to make it work

It's honestly much lower than I expected; if you asked me to estimate ahead of time I would have guessed a lower number on the first two but surely at least like 100 lumina points worth on the main damage dealer Maelle

(Also as far as attributes go, Verso's 99 Def should be 99 Vit with this setup; I just didn't bother to recoat lmao)

Weapons were ||Litheson for Sciel (but honestly irrelevant), Sireso for Verso, Medalum for Maelle||

And skill sequence is exceedingly simple too, just ||Sciel [Fortune's Fury] on Maelle -> Verso [Perfect Break] -> Maelle [Stendhal]||

I’ll maybe play around with some other characters too after breakfast, to see how low the lumina investment is needed for all of the other characters as main DPS

I have a feeling Maelle will be the overall lowest-needed but that it’ll still be doable for everyone with under triple digits

i think what pisses me off is that they quietly patched it out without addressing it 💀 they did mention that they used stock images in development and from my own experience, i know there's slop there. if there was a genuine mistake, i don't think that acknowledging it and then fixing it would've gotten them any heat, but keeping quiet is just not a good look

||Painted Verso pleading with Maelle to let him go really made my heart compress, both for him and for her. Her having to lose him twice but also him wanting to end his suffering. It is so familiar to me. ||

Tw death, terminal illness || Before I made a career pivot during the pandemic I had a role in which I frequently encountered people at the end of their lives. There are certain memories I have (and honestly will always have) of people having to make decisions about terminal illness, about whether they wanted to keep fighting or to make the most of the time they had left. And I also witnessed the effect that had on the people who loved them, the ways in which that caused conflict, the difficulty that people understandably had in letting go. The struggle to put your loved one’s wishes and desires above your own, especially when they go against what you want. I remember years later now the time I wept myself to sleep one night after leaving work with the sound of someone telling their partner “let me die please let me die” over and over. There were occasionally times I felt like I retreated into a state of dissociation to get through the day. Perhaps somewhat fortunately we didn’t do this kind of role for more than three months at a time but it was still long enough.
Anyway, for this and various other reasons you might be able to imagine, I had a sort of mental health crisis at the height of the pandemic, leading to me finding another job that was less emotionally taxing. So I am much less so at the coalface nowadays but I do not necessarily regret the time I spent there. I can say looking on it now, it stretched the boundaries of my own empathy in uncomfortable ways but also my understanding of human experience, which I carry with me for a lifetime now. ||
