If there's one "gripe", if you could call it that, I have with the game right now, it's how easy it is to miss things because there's not a clear enough indicator, for me, to determine which NPCs you should go up and talk to vs which are non-interactable parts of the crowd

Was watching Lorie's vod earlier today and noticed she ran into a few NPCs/dialogue/interactions in the prologue that I somehow just missed completely (and likewise she missed quite a few that I found)

Honestly, they cooked hard as hell for the combat in general, just from the tiny taste I've gotten (I've no doubt more complexity will be layered on over time, and I'm so excited)

Its only autosave, but you can kinda game it by doing things like resting at checkpoints, switching equipment, etc

But yes unfortunately for obsesseive saveslotters like myself (pavlov'd by years of Bethesda games), there's nothing like that lmao

Also I seem to be having a performance issue when I play the game for long stretches, where my frames start dropping and even doing performance tweaks either in game or messing with performance mods doesn't seem to be fixing it, so its just a "wait for a patch" situation at this point I guess

I guess I should also dig into seeing if people have figured out damage formulas in this game to figure out a good rough ratio of Health to Defense for damage mitigation

...or maybe I should just go full glass cannon and git gud at parries/dodges lmao

So while being as vague as possible, yes because sometimes I can have a character go 3 times (once due to speed, the other due to a later buff (again being vague)) and its possible to outpace enemies a few turns if your whole team's speed is high enough
But this works both ways and enemies can go multiple times if their speed is higher than your team's

Unfortunately there's no way to tell in game how fast you are vs enemies until you just get into a fight and you're either running circles around them, or the turns go normally, or you see the turn order is "oops all enemies" and they start grating you like cheese

sorry i’m clogging up this thread with so much of my yapping. these are just my thoughts so far don’t click unless you’ve reached act 2 ||it’s very clear to me now that there’s just so much depth to the writing. not that i was doubting them before but it just cements the fact that the devs know exactly what they’re doing. writing a false narrative from the beginning, even heralding gustav as the mc from the very second you launch the game and even in the marketing. the fact that you’d spend a good chunk of time learning how to use him in battle, levelling him and then all of that being completely wiped. it’s very logical in a gameplay perspective but when you pair that with the narrative it just reinstates the fact that he’s gone.

it seems to me now that verso was meant to be the protagonist if that makes any sense at all and the way they were able to keep all of that under wraps. and now he’s the one furthering the plot and continuing the journey. euggggg. so many thoughts. perhaps verso was meant to be the mc all along. but he’s so likeable from the get go and this was done in such an amazing albeit painful way. interested to learn more about him. ugh i also just missed ben starr’s voice. maybe it’s also my attachment to clive but oof <3333 my peepaw grandpa. verso is my pookie now ||

No but that’s the funny thing and why I was exasperated myself last night when I figured out the actual timings for the enemy I was fighting: there was actually less of a disconnect than I thought there was and I was playing assuming there was more of one bc of adjustments I’ve had to make in other games

Like I kept failing bc I thought I needed to anticipate the attack more, parrying pretty much right as the attack animation happens

But turns out the parry is fast/instant enough that I actually get to (nay, am supposed to) let the enemy attack start more

I don’t think I’m explaining well, but basically, I learned last night that, at least for that particular enemy, the parry timing was easier and more intuitive than I was making it out to be, and I was handicapping myself by assuming a tighter window than the game was giving me

God knows I’m mostly going into fights with a “learn to parry or get one-shot” mentality anyways lmao

I learned a heal skill on ||Lune|| and have never touched it since because if I have spare AP I’m throwing it into more damage to end the fight faster and relying on getting better at parries to survive lmao

I have been throwing points into vitality but I just want to be able to survive one-shots, even if only barely (like the hit takes 90% of my hp instead of 100%)

Being allowed at least that one margin of error makes a pretty big difference in consistency for me

But I’m okay not getting much more than that, at least for now

the only thing that frustrates me sometimes is when i learn patterns of enemies that can one shot me, only to discover that my hits are not powerful enough so their hp bar doesn't budge... i simply think i should be able to brute force everything as long as i learn the patterns and if my heart is pure </3

Also from what I’ve observed, at least for the early game, vitality seems more cost-efficient (the number of points it takes to literally double or triple my HP is like only a 5-10% DPS increase if put into damage, if even)

Which makes sense, since I heard might scales greatly with weapon stats too so beginner weapons are gonna have lower bases

Probably gonna put early points into Health and Speed and then start putting points into damage once I have a decent foundation

(And then when builds come online lategame I’ll respec to adjust then)

It does help that it’s been relatively painless to keep trying again since you can force an autosave right in front of the encounter, there’s no real consequence for dying, and load times are reasonably quick

And tbh maybe this is a good thing actually, since I mostly wanted to fight this boss for the personal challenge; I actually don't want to be too overleveled and trivialize the story stuff

||Maelle was definitely the MVP since Virtuoso stance retains all its properties even when not on your turn, meaning all of her parry counters were doing 200% extra damage each time||

||Also, funnily, the boss having so much speed compared to us worked out actually, because that meant I could have Gustave cast his partywide Powerful buff and have that be retained for like 9 boss turns' worth of counters essentially||

Depending on what the 4th party member’s kit looks like, the first I replace may end up being ||Gustave, despite him being the “MC” because he currently synergizes the least with the other two. Lune and Maelle help each other out bc Maelle likes burned enemies and can also create fire weakness for Lune, but Gustave is just kind of doing his own thing||

||I also appear to have a ton of skills for Gustave entirely locked out though, presumably by story progression, so depending on what he gets later this may change||

But yeah, that's why I asked you the earlier question about party exp: generally I really like when games sync everyone's levels because then I can freely switch around by situation ("oh for this area I'll swap to a more fire-focused team" or "for this boss I want to bring in a team that's better at breaking" etc.), which is something I very much enjoy doing, or by story (in BG3 I swapped team members around based on location/story beats), or just vibes

Games that don't do that, though, make it a little harder to switch around as freely, so I find myself just sticking to the same group after settling in on a team, which is something I tend to enjoy a little less

bioware is a studio owned by ea. dragon age the veilguard came out recently and it took them 10 years because of a lot of reasons. it was stuck in covid development hell, lots of internal issues with overworking, bad working conditions, lay offs, EA forcing them to rewrite the story so they can make it live service which lead to them scrapping a big part of the story. then they pushed hard against EA to make it single player and EA accepted. game came out, it was great, not "10 years wait" great, but great, a good game that was loved by the people that was made. did not meet the unrealistic expections of 1.5mil copies (it only sold like 1mil or something)... expections that were not even met by bg3 on release. incredibly unrealistic. studio still exists but it might as well be basically dissolved because most of the major roles have been laid off right after

Not sure if this is the issue for you, but I've anecdotally found that the first turn order tends to generally follow the order that members were added to your party (take everyone off except the person you want first, then add the other two in order)

And then after first turn agility makes more of a difference in shifting order around

||its funny because I have luminas that make Lune's heals do exactly that to my team and Sciel just literally has a skill that does all 3 buffs by default xD||

||although my case with Lune is a bit more cheesey because I have it work off this skill||

||so I have a setup that makes her go twice, first I get her AP through basic attacking, then I cast this, and because it can go for 3 to 5 turns by itself it keeps refreshing the buffs :D||

major mid act 2 spoilers ||NOCOOO i hate this game i hate it i hate it i hate it. i’m also so curious what’s maelle’s connection to renoir. verso’s his son??? who exactly is alicia??? my thoughts are they’re somehow the same person or related??? maelle seems to be connected to the manor and i can’t tell if verso was calling maelle, alicia or if he was calling for that person from inside the manor eugh ||

mid act 2 hypotheses ||i have a feeling the paintress and maelle are somehow connected. from the conversations we’ve had with fading people, it seems like whatever she paints can come to life? and maybe something she painted went horrible wrong that caused the fracture.

thinking if there’s been reincarnations of the paintress and the main one is stuck painting the numbers on the monolith. and maelle could be one of those reincarnations? it’s a bit frustrating that they refuse to tell maelle anything even at this point after learning verso’s related to renoir||

||renoir’s fight was also really rough but fun lol. got my ass handed to me until i swapped my team members up. i’ve learnt that i just don’t really enjoy maelle in combat all that much ||

i have some theories

however i fear that i might be right so maybe i should not share them read them at your own risk, big act 2 spoilies ||i feel like maelle is alicia. it would also make sense why when when she interfered against renoir, verso yelled "alicia" when she struck him. it would also explain why she was considered an "unwanted" baby by her parents. because i don't think they actually had her, i think they found her. now why would there be two alicias? no idea, but im assuming it has to do with the paintress. cause another theory of mine is that no one really "dies", instead they get reincarnated as nevrons (the talking ones especially are proof of that). sirene also had a very odd connection with lune and maelle kept repeating that the dance is familiar (which is the dance you see in lumiere at the beginning im pretty sure). i wouldn't be surprised if maelle is a "copy" of alicia designed by the paintress||
