You get gems from mines + events + packs+ nifs

Packs 70-80% of gems you get from them ,,,while mines you get 3-5% of gems ,,, while nifs you get 5-8% ,,, while events you get 20-30% of gems

Lol, gems are useful for everyone except if you're a mega whale. Just use them on the wheel or in destiny divination to upgrade your heroes. Or use them to buy monster essence, thorny spikes and war horns so you can max the watch tower, war hall and squad base so you can unlock t6 and unlock more researches as well. If you've already done all of this you can use them to buy speedups at the prosperity merchant or just simply upgrade your prosperity levels. Gems are really useful
