I see it like it's much easier to get 10x of an item that is less rare over 1 item that is more rare.
You can buy them in steps, and directly on the market.
Last season you had to trade gold for items, items for items, and items for the egg.
Now it's just "Buy the thing 10x, also it drops often and gold is easier in the end of wipe."

Of course, as a trading item itself, the tears have value for the quest, but also as steps towards artifacts, which keeps it price up

rerolling unique: 50 unique scrap + 1 unique gem
upgrading legend into unique: 100 unique scrap + 2 unique gem

where the gem is different (diamond, sapphire, etc) depending on the workshop (like weapon, tailor, etc)
