That’s why you pepper with it. You can always go for direct too, but in a 1v1 fireballs are unavoidable if the wiz is good. Then you just hitscan for finish.

splashing the floor with fireballs? it does like no damage is all i am saying. unless you are using that splash damage to apply the special effects there is very few reasons to shoot the floor. for example stopping someone from opening or closing a door is a good reason but there aren't many.

you could be a better wizard once you attempt to actually hit direct with fireballs. i went most of a wipe a while back using meditate and overload to spam fireballs all day and night until i had really good aim with them. it was worth it

It's not that expensive to craft a good kit. It might not have BIS rolls, but if you fully gem it, it will be good enough. Maybe 10-20k for a kit? Depending on what weapon you need to craft.

the red bar instantly finishes the lockpicking sequence, opening the chest. on classes with slower interaction speed like cleric and barbarian, if you don't hit the red on the first try, you're likely going to have to do it again.

Stay close to be able to dodge by hugging left or right, its also predictable as it comes out before slam and once a specific amount of damage is done. You can usually expect 2 lasers, but if you are slow doing damage after 3rd slam he could laser again before death.

I like playing both wizard and sorcerer. Sorcerer is better at getting out of tough situations with the right spells, but wizard feels a little more useful because I don’t have to wait for the cooldowns to cast.
As to practicing, you can go into the PvE mode if you wanted to learn the mobs first or do Squire to Riches (s2r) for no gear PvP if you wanted to dive right into that
