The camera on purpose moves to places where you cant see shit
so you pretty much has to purely guess
I mostly know about drakengard through reading the lore stuff in automata
at the end the screen starts to fade and get black
you still have to keep going
for the veteran nier fans in the thread, why do NieR and NieR Replicant get separate entries on this silly image that implies one is set after the other's ending E?
you were not kidding

I think it's because, and don't quote me on that, the ending E the way it was described in the documents and the way it's implemented in the remake are different
The original game didn't have an Ending E, but it was unused content
I am not sure exactly how different they are from design document to implementation but fans clearly think it's different enough to split the two games
Ending E in the original Nier was just a little novel
ended up committing to watching all 6.5 hours of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WU1mvH6bqo
The entire Nier & Drakengard storyline condensed and recapped in chronological order. From the first game to the novella's, anime, and books, this storyline Yoko Taro has made is quite the confusing world if you're not paying attention.

hey folks! I ended up picking up Neir Automata after hearing from a friend that you can lose HUD display for more Chip Space and power. That sounds awesome, but I also wanted to ask if the game can be played KB+M? I don't really have a good controller on me atm, though I suppose a PS4 controller could do in a pinch
I guess i finished NieR for the first time
Route A done
The Orb™️ boss fight got really laggy on my switch
oh, I was thinking of Replicant's Wendy
huh, yeah i forgor about Wendy
Automata

yeah that tracks, i can imagine the orb boss before Adam (or eve i forget) being a bitch on Switch hardware
(pc master race /s)
replicant isn't even on switch, lmao
shame, both games are good in their own right
Ill probably buy replicant on pc
and there'll defo be some references in Automata (Like Emil's existence) that you'll miss since you haven't played Replicant yet
like, the fact that Automata is a direct(ish) sequel to Replicant shouldn't be too much of a surprise or spoiler but
it's going to get a little weird going to Replicant from Automata.
not saying you have to mind, you'll probably just be confused by certain parts in Replicant because Automata psuedo assumes you played Replicant, not too much tho
(or i guess TECHNICALLY THE OG NIER since Replicant came out AFTER Automata)
I suspect there's pros and cons to going in both directions since the stories are so distantly related
the objectively correct path is FFXIV > Replicant > Automata
yes i expect you to play an mmo and three expansions just to do the NieR Automata raids
(this is a joke, btw)
it's just funny doing the wojack meme to stuff i found in Replicant/Automata that is technically big spoilers but I just don't know WHY, lmao
like ||the shades being former humans with names|| and ||the Tower that appears in route C/D||
and THEN the final boss of the whole raid series being a fucking Drakengard 3 reference that my NieR loving friend actually freaked the fuck out over VC
meanwhile me: "ah, cool boss"
Replicant and Automata are mostly two unrelated stories
they are part of the same overall continuity, and in that continuity, Replicant happens first
that's all
the details will become clear when you play the other one, not worth knowing any more than that beforehand
Oh ok
e.g. you won't be seeing any of the androids or machines in Replicant
i

In addition, during the event the text "R3PENT" was displayed on the screen various times.
MAN WHAT YOU COOKING
@pallid rover
Yeah I was expecting more "RULES OF NATURE AND THEY RUN WHEN THE SUN COMES UP" but I got a bit more.... Ghibli?
maybe the simplest way to sum up the typical tone of much of a Nier game is "You just killed them. I hope you're happy. You monster." after making you do what every other action RPG game normally entails
so Platinum doing the combat side of it was kind of a perfect choice; you're almost guaranteed to enjoy the slaughter before feeling like shit about it
Ghibli's actually a very interesting comparison, I feel like that might only apply to early Automata... but we'll see
I do think it kind of applies
To the setting if nothing else
Especially older Ghibli like Nausicaa
That's what I was thinking, going into the desert area 9S starts talking more about it and it gets pretty obvious with him going "don't worry they don't actually think or have feelings ignore the fact that they're talking to us in almost complete sentences right now though"
But before that I had a quest where I just had to gather some stuff and the red area where this stuff was was on the little field at the entrance of the city where the little guys are hanging out and chilling and I thought "They're not asking me to kill these guys, right?"
I don't know if Ghibli is the right word for it, I was just surprised to find the semi open world nature of the game and how I actually enjoyed the act of just running around and taking in all the scenery and the music
To be fair the first boss fight is still a weird oil rig robot metal gear thing
what a mess...
this is the weirdest way to learn Spanish but I think it's working
''thank you mister, thank you grumpy lady''

yeah this one's probably gonna be for later for sure...
oh you maxed out the ninjabot immediately
I just said hi whenever I had to run through there anyway
That's what I did but I guess I just ran through this part too much, I've been doing side quests for pretty much the entire session
I stopped just now after the part with the goliaths and after doing one or two more small side quests before I wrapped up the session
since linking to the backlog risks spoilers, but you've now finished this sidequest:

I love you wearing the pink bowIxrec — 09/12/2023 4:55 PM
it's thematically appropriate
I headcanon 9S asked about it and 2B explained the friendly robots will be more inclined to keep helping us with our mission if we use/wear their giftsHclegend, The Dangerest Daisy — 09/12/2023 4:59 PM
''all units be advised of a missing yorha unit with chips that contain crucial confidential information find out where they are''
I wouldn't know anything...
I didn't even check if the bows were were-able
I did get the blue one too from the big sister
also... that's Spain Spanish?
I also don't know if it's my eyes playing tricks on me but I could swear 2b actually gains speed the more you sprint, this girl runs fast she's like a horse girl from umamusume
I did add 2 movement speed chips just to make the running around less tedious but I don't know how drastic the difference is, I'm not sure what the optimal chips are so far in the game I haven't really bought many at all
it's the only spanish option there is, that's unfortunately how it is with pretty much most games only recently are they adding latin american as an option for text and voices
I've not played in a while but no, I think she does reach higher speeds the more you run
me neither, I think I quickly maxed out chip capacity and ended up just throwing in all of the high level chips I came across
aaaaah, okay, for some reason I thought it was the other way around when they only do one kind of Spanish
must be my subconcious bias of growing up in California
two be fair the language options in this game are pretty lackluster, there's not even a portuguese option either
I would've expected a lot more languages available
I wonder how that compares to other Japanese games, or Platinum games
I think more recent ones have latin american languages. I believe Nier is a bit older now
Oh, 2017. Not as old as i thought for some reason, but the comment still stands
It's not that old.... it's just.... 7 years...
oh yeah, I guess Portuguese would take priority over Spanish - Latin America
And then there's elden ring. Thai made my fiancée happy
For Platinum this is pretty common, Metal Gear Rising has the same but that one has Brazilian Portuguese at least, Nier Replicant has the same as Automata but Korean and Chinese, Bayonetta has the same as Automata
Thai is the real outlier here. Stuff extremely rarely gets localized, and based on what my fiancée was saying they did an excellent job. Like, the sections of Elden Ring where they would use older styles of english, they did the same for thai too
nice
these days I almost never hear about a language getting a bad localization, it feels like one of those features where if it's not worth doing well then it's not worth doing at all
I feel like there was one that got a lot of flak a couple years ago, can't remember which though
yeah, there's always one, but it feels like the rare exception now
looking through some japanese games on steam it does seem like those are some of the most common 'must have' languages they do and anything else is probably just a bonus
I understand localization and putting the money and time into that stuff can be hard but it's a bummer when it's a surprise to me that a game will be in my language let alone have voice acting in my language (sort of, it's not even the same dialect but it's closer than european spanish)
Octopath 2
most intense romeo and juliet play ever...
Oh that's why there were so many bodies in this place
also hey let's go bows
I was getting a little upset here because I kept trying to get to this spot but I eventually got there I guess I just had to get to it from a specific spot?
I thought the yorha unit just hanging out there was a bit odd
( and of course you can fish there )
also the funniest thing happened near the end of this session, I went back to this spot because I assumed maybe I'd find something relating to a quest (the map showed a red spot near here and the dimensions of the map weren't very clear)
and when I got there I got greeted by this before I could even tell what was happening
then I went there a second time and it just happened again
I had to run aaaaall the way across the desert because I had last saved at this little oil oasis area on the west side of the desert and the last time I did manage to get my body back and actually beat all the enemies there but I realized they just kept coming so I just left
good place to farm I suppose though, I used the pod that shoots rockets while I jumped around and it was pretty easy that way
just some side-questing this session, I got a bunch of them since that goliath messed up the whole city so I wanna do them before advancing, I'm a little bummed that now the whole city is wrecked and all the dudes there are hostile when they were just hanging out before
I must've revisited that area much later because I don't remember anything there ever one-shotting me
TIL "moriiiiiiiiid"
The funny thing about that is that it's not only european Spanish but it's also spoken in a very old timey way so there's like two layers of stuff going on there
The things that killed me were these little exploding machines, I thought I got one shot too but I think I just got hit by one of those... Twice
And they do a lot of damage if they get you directly
I did encounter a lot of level 20-30 enemies in some of these side quests and I'm barely lvl 17 ish so I wonder if I'm doing something wrong, maybe not grinding as much as I should?
right, the -d form for commands is... is that both Spain Spanish and old-timey?
I feel like I saw that used in Blasphemous
fwiw I never did any dedicated "grinding" per se, just a lot of the side quests
in fact the only reason I didn't 100% the sidequests is that the ones I had left at the end would've required grinding out another 10+ levels to be viable
Yeah it's conjugated as if it was plural which is a very old timey way of speaking sort of like the whole thou thing but not really
I did leave a quest for later with this one girl in the desert that wants me to fight robots for data, I think she wanted me to defeat some robots in 30 seconds and I just couldn't do it so I'll get back to that at some point, and also that weird robot sensei guy
I didn't upgrade my weapons or anything either though I didn't even pay attention to that
yeah it looks like you maxed out robosensei immediately while I just sorta said hi when it was convenient
I legitimately just talked to him every time I passed by but I guess I just found him way earlier
I also crossed the bridge and went to the... Mall? Last session
I couldn't do anything there at all but it looked pretty
indeed
aaaahh there we go, there's the advanced combat tech I was missing
not quite DMC style weapon/style switching but it'll do
mmmmmhm, this pod is fantastic for crowd control
oooohhhh nooo.....
they're ordering me to find the renegade yorha dude that's stealing the units to make a family

feeling like a hero yet, 9S?
sheesh....

thanks for the sword, I guess...
Ohhh the girl at the resistance camp left and left me all her stuff too after I told her her friend died to the machines, okay so this is gonna be a Dark Souls type game where every character you come across and help out on side quests will have a terrible depressing end, got it
hello... fem Sephiroth??
I appreciate the game just casually deciding it wanted to be a metroidvania for like 20 min there
I wonder how intentional it is but everytime Pascal speaks it's really endearing and adorable
60 too, I think it's genius to put an android with such a bubbly personality on the same team as a super apathetic and kind of socially awkard android like 2B
.
To be fair 9S talks a lot more than the operators and he's hanging out around her more, maybe it's that
She almost called 9S "nines" while we were metroidvania'ing on the castle though
it could not be more obvious that we're doing a "you're more human than you think you are" story and yet it all lands anyway
(admittedly, partially because [SPOILERS] is not obvious)
From the moment I landed and 9S started talking about "don't worry 2b san these are machines, they don't have feelings!
" I immediately knew what this story would be about
Even the big goliath unit started talking to us and said it wanted to lie down there for a while because it was tired
alright....
no comprende espaniol
since I was around I thought I'd challenge this guy again and hey I actually won, still very underleveled for this but somehow having to carefully go about this fight because of the level difference made it more fun and challenging
man are these videos in 14k or something my garbage TalkTalk connection can't handle this
they shouldn't be, I think the settings I have on obs are for 720p for the output
she actually said yes to going out shopping with 9S?
well look at that he's actually getting somewhere
I'm now picturing 2B wearing a regular casual t-shirt over her entire outfit

yatta
that was an eventful session
there was a pretty big gap between my first visit to this area and me defeating the boss because I actually died, realized I had to upgrade my weapons because I had just gotten the gauntlets and a new spear, went to farm for the materials in the forest, fucking died in the forest and lost all my chips because I didn't go back to pick them up and then I came back with an almost fully upgraded kit
funniest part is that because I lost all my favourite chips I then said ''fuck it'' and spent the entirety of the boss fight just picking up all the resources I could from all the bodies scattered (I even got an achievement for getting 100)
though once I decided to actually fight the boss as intended I had fun with my new weapons
she looks so strangely adorable with her gigantic gauntlets
and is also totally doing the little Beowulf shuffle

come on, be nice to Pascal
''I'll have to come back to investigate as soon as possible, when I do, would you want to come with me?
''
''Pass.
''
and now to do it 25 more times
Pffff?????
welp the game crashed while I was fighting the goliath as 9S
I'm gonna be honest I'm not sure if I have it in me to do another entire playthrough of this game unless this one is some sort of abridged version of the game but with 9s instead
in all seriousness, the multiple playthroughs thing is nowhere near as bad as it sounds
you never have to repeat sidequests, and the main quest of A is a lot shorter than it initially seems
and there are several main missions where you get unique segments as 9S
and iirc A->B has the most actual duplication, after that it gets even wilder
so the net effect was that personally I never felt like my time was being wasted by the replaying
(Replicant's replays were more of a slog)
I kind of already did every single side quest I came upon and I scoured the map pretty good everytime I found a new area so if I can just book it for the main story in this replay I may be able to finish it in just a couple of hours
I don't think I would waste time replaying it I just don't think I would have it in me if I had to replay the entire game just to see a new ending, especially after my 100+ hours on Cyberpunk which I still have yet to go back to, I'm starting to feel the RPG toll
yeah it is definitely not 100+ hours per ending
So I'm thinking on at least doing 9S's story if it's not too long then, but another question now: is Replicant good? it's 60% off right now and that's a pretty good deal, I'd be willing to wait for another sale but now that I saw it I'm wondering if I'd feel like getting it at some point later down the line
Replicant and Automata are both great stories for most of the same reasons, if you like one you'll like the other
but Automata's gameplay is way better
Mmmmmm that might be a problem.... I already felt like Automata's gameplay wasn't as crazy as people made it sound (Devil May Cry spoiled me a lot) even though I was having fun with it, I'm willing to do more Automata but if Replicant's gameplay isn't significantly better it does make me think twice about it
I still have more Automata to get through since I guess I technically didn't really actually finish it, the only thing preventing me from doing it right now is all these shoot em up sections
very Platinum, I didn't like these in Bayonetta and I don't like them here, but the rest is good so I'm putting up with it
I just remembered I completely forgot to finish the whole flower questline in Automata... and I already started the new save
Automata’s rep probably benefited from being compared to RPGs rather than spectacle fighters
I’ve always treated RPGs as the games where I put up with the gameplay to get to the story so actually fun gameplay is a pleasant surprise when it happens
Yeah I see Automata as this strange in between, I can definitely see Automata being very fun from the perspective of an RPG player but from my perspective where gameplay looks like this: https://youtu.be/CxEFx9tykPs?si=m9p-anHq1oOq0YqV it just made me think there was stuff missing
Consider this a Revengeance Status lol.
Difficulty: Revengeance
Comparison to under 100 hours in 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAxAk4VuZyA
Original version of The Only Thing i Know for Real: https://youtu.be/juDjuHUM-94
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
but you've played hi fi rush so you know what I'm talking about, I just had to approach it with the RPG mindset
I guess that's why I vastly prefer RPGs being turn based personally, because when the gameplay tries to mimick an action game like how the modern FF games are doing, it just makes me think it's not as good as if it was a character action game, but then it wouldn't be an RPG, if that makes sense
Automata does have cool stuff in it though it's not as if the game feels unfinished but if Replican't doesn't significantly improve on that and it feels like more of the same then it does make me think twice about getting that one after Automata
did.... did the game ''record'' my inputs for this entire part?
for the record: I did not press a single button in both those clips
''Man, miss Operator, you don't have to always be so formal...
but... that's what I like about you''
jesus christ
9S is the type of guy who just shoots his shot to every girl he speaks to
also, new guys
yup
^

well, 2B fair the game does let you skip the entire thing
I just wanted to make sure it didn't have any unique scene or something
not to my knowledge
so far any scene that isn't entirely new is probably reused so I may skip them in the future, just so I don't spend another 20 hours on this playthrough
All my items are still here, all my chips, the quests are all done too, so this may be shorter than 2B's run
it certainly should be shorter
especially if you did lots of sidequests the first time
There was an entire part of the game where 9S was not present so that should have new stuff from his perspective
I want to say I probably did most if not all sidequests
so yeah
the only sidequest I totally forgot to wrap up before ending the game was the one about the flowers, the merchant bot gave me the key to the elevator in the mall and I forgot to go back there
Sure does, I was planning to do it right after this moment here
but it's exactly at that moment where the game kind of 'locks' into that endgame state after the HQ burns down
