What?
Y cant metroid crawl
Zero Mission

Is there any way to lock Samus in place to aim like dred
nope, the old school Metroids all do 8 directions of shooting only
only Dread (and the Primes) get access to the advanced technology of ✨ analog sticks ✨
so a typical part of (Super, or) ZM or Fusion combat is picking one of the 8 directions (well, 5 when you're on the ground) and then running a little forward to get the angle right
You can hold L to make her aim at an angle up or down, though
While you run around
Or crouched or standing still
Or hanging on a ledge
well, I didn't want to provide the "have you tried pressing every button?" level of gameplay advice
unless Cap says otherwise I'm gonna assume they managed that much lol
iirc Dread also let you aim while ledge-hanging and stuff like that so I wouldn't worry about it
It does, yeah
Can you really not fire missiles upwards??
you can definitely fire missiles up lol (and diagonally)
but I don't recall if you have missiles at all yet
are you... holding the equivalents of R and up?
Yes
(we can't really debug "it's not working")
What
What keyboard do you have? (I assume you're playing with a keyboard and not a gamepad)
The keyboard attached to my laptop
Yeah... your keyboard might not be capable of sending 3+ simultaneous keypresses correctly
Fucking of course
That's called key rollover. Usually keyboards will support 8 or 10 key rollover, fancy ones support n-key rollover meaning any amount of keys pressed will signal correctly. But budget keyboards might only support 2-5, but I haven't seen rollover that low in ages...
It's just a theory, mind
In principle you should be able to press D-pad up + R + fire to fire missiles upwards...
Hmmmm
aren't some keyboards better about this with "modifier keys" like ctrl/shift/alt?
might be worth trying a rebind
Yeah, some are. A lot of cheaper keyboards will have variable rollover entirely depending on the specific keys being pressed. (Circuitry reasons)
Changing the key binds might work, yeah
"variable rollover", that's the fancy term
Basically they'll put several keys on the same circuit, so a given set can't be pressed at the same time but another set can along with the other set
I don't really know if that's the exact term, though
But makes sense to me
@wet flint look it's Mandalorian but Samus and the Baby
Ohhh I've seen that one before but that's still epic as hell
What about these
Whoa that is a fun fact
NOOO WAIT
That's so sad cuz that means Samus has to kill clones of it
Yep.
The fact isn't fun anymore
Remember the baby was the last living Metroid in Super. Other M shows that the Federation cloned it from the remains that fell on her suit.
Presumably then the rest after that point are just clones
Unrelated, but Prime takes place before 1/ZM right?
IIRC the timeline is 1/ZM, then Primes 1-3, then Other M then Super....
Yes, Dread is the latest game in the timeline
Prime 4's place is currently unknown.
Oh, sorry
I made an error
Just to get the whole thing out there:
Metroid NES / Zero Mission (Metroid 1)
Prime 1
Prime Hunters
Prime 2
Prime 3
Federation Force
Metroid II/Samus Returns (Metroid 2)
Super Metroid (Metroid 3)
Other M
Fusion (Metroid 4)
Dread (Metroid 5)
Federation Force
I'm sorry that's canon???
Other M and Federation Force are currently ambiguously canon.
But if they are, those are where they stand.
Other M will never be canon in my brain 🙂
Omg billion dollar idea
A Hyrule Historia but instead of Zelda it's Metroid
The thing is that when Other M came out, Nintendo explicitly insisted it was canon.
But in the years following, and in the marketing material for Dread, Nintendo has conspicuously omitted it from the timeline.
So the fandom is currently assuming that Other M was retconned.
Federation Force is a... messy question.
Same, 100%.
Other M is the only video game to actually piss me off so much that I ended up throwing my controller across the room and immediately walked out.
Other M had great ideas in it, mind
And I want them to try again
But what they did with the writing was GOD AWFUL
And just brazenly sexist.
Yeahh
But yes, Dread portrayed her correctly
A powerful badass with emotion and empathy who lets her actions do the talking.
And she doesn't take shit from anyone.
RIGHT?
She is completely out of fucks to give
I'm sorry it's a bit of a meme but it's very relevant. (Spoilers for the ending of Metroid Dread)
It was SO ON POINT
Now I'm remembering the part where Samus just straight up becomes a Metroid
GOD THIS GAME IS SO GOOD
Though
The Raven Beak boss fight is a bitch to do in hard mode
I'm still stuck on it
It's a bitch in normal mode
God, I could BARELY do it
I'm nowhere close to it in hard mode yet
It would be more tolerable if there were checkpoints in between phases
Yeah
but I am SUPER CURIOUS what Samus has to do now
Like, is she stuck in Metroid form?
Didn't she revert back to normal at the end of Dread cuz if she stayed a Metroid she would have drained the ship of it's power?
That was an epic plot twist and they ultimately left it with so many new questions
Oh yes, you're right
The X copy of whats-his-name set her back to normal
Yeah, no doubt
It's pretty nuts her genetic code has been changed several times by now
Also his name is Quiet Robe :p
Dread spoilers. Got a copy of the scene from my Switch recording.
Yeah. I wanted to say Old Bird, but that's the wrong Chozo haha
Heh
In Prime do you travel to different planets or is it all on one like the 2d games?
In Prime 1 you're running around different regions across Tallon IV, a single planet. In Prime 2 you're running around different regions and a mirror dimension of Aether, a single planet. In Prime 3 you get to go between multiple planets.
I see
Well
I think for the next 2d Metroid traveling to different planets would be neat
Yeah
I'd like to see more of that
It would be great to see Prime 4 take some of the ideas of 3 further and actually allow you to pilot the gunship.
You get to command the gunship and use it as a quick travel system in 3.
Hehehe
For being one of the greatest evils in the series he is pretty cute

Maybe...?
Just me?
I think Samus and Doomguy would be friends
Oooh
Samus, Doomguy, and Master Chief would be friends for sure.
The most ambitious crossover event of the decade.
I believe I have the Metroid Prime Trilogy working in Dolphin now, going to stream some Prime 1 over in VC
missles being d-pad down is going to take some getting used to
I know I'm not the first to make this joke, but, this aged very strangely
woo, I've nearly made it to where the Metroids show up
wasn't expecting to play this literally all day but apparently that's what we're doing
why would you need to explicitly forbid "unauthorized metroid feeding"?
are some of the pirates just feeding them for fun like when we throw bread at birds?
oooh I made it to the Omega Pirate fight
I think this is my favorite boss from MP1
Do you think Ridley will ever come back Ix
what kind of question is that
oh
the joke is he's been revived so many times it's like asking if they'll make another Batman movie
Oh lol
some version of Ridley was in... I wanna say NES Metroid, Zero Mission, Super, Fusion, MP1 and MP3?
one of you will correct me on that
And the remake of Metroid 2
I need to finish Prime but that game over screen is seriously discomforting, reminds me of a bad time
phew
...wow, I must've done a lot of pausing if it took me 20+ minutes to beat that
One or two other scans paint a picture of some Space Pirates treating the Metroids like pets. In Prime 2 there’s a scan where they get fed up and explicitly order that you stop treating them like pets because they’ll just kill you.
sometime after I wrote that, I came across an unrelated pirate log that said all actual pets in the mines must be disposed of because phazon madness made them dangerous
Yep
Prime 2 they order the euthanasia of all “domesticated” Metroids because one of them killed a Space Pirate.

He’s so squishy!
Isn't the Metroid amiibo squishy
Yes!
I think the only intentionally squishy amiibo
Same thing with the Nintendo World Metroids
Hey it’s the baby
I might need to get one
You can hunt them down on Amazon sometimes
And they’re not too expensive
They come in two sizes
Ice broom at the ready
Smol edition
chomp
Oh, also
This is now up for preorder
Preorders will be open from 27th September 2022 (Tue) from 12:00JST until 10th November 2022 (Thu) at 12:00JST.
12,500 is about 125 bucks isn't it?
I have no money for it
Perhaps I should gather items from some alien planet, leave the planet completely overpowered (possibly blow it up) and then sell the items to afford it
My preorder in the US shop was $86.99, total cost after tax and shipping $100.33
Oh that's not bad at all
The strongest warrior in the galaxy joins the figma series once again. From the Nintendo Switch game METROID DREAD comes a figma action figure of the main character, Samus Aran! · Using the smooth yet posable joints of figma, you can create a variety of poses from the game. · A flexible plastic is
here's the US page
And yeah, the Figma statues are great
She's so pretttyyyyyy
Samus is well acquainted with beaked creatures
Also at a glance I thought there was an EMMI at the bottom and I was ready to start panicking
Heh
God both of these figures are gorgeous
I don't have an EMMI figure yet
However I do have a bunch of 3D printable parts to build one
PANIK
Just haven't tried doing that yet

"You are faced with overwhelming power. Accept your helplessness."
New articulated figure from the Metroid series, this time it is ...
I’ve seen and played so much horror stuff and yet the EMMIs scare me more than most of it
What's great about the EMMIs is that they don't hide in the shadows.
You just can't stop them
Have you guys seen Vinesauce Joel do the frame perfect EMMI counter like 5 times in a row
I hate their mechanical precision, their creepy little beepboops
I love them so much
That’s just his passive in action

I love the panicked controller mashing when he gets frozen
Lmao me too
Same
I think I have that poster buried somewhere too
As a My Nintendo reward
Although I think the My Nintendo edition is holographic whereas the preorder variant wasn't
Could be wrong
This Metroid channel deserves a thumbnail D:
Can the mods add one?
Or only the poster?
Sadly you can't add a picture after the post has already been created :(
That's so silly D:
Yes I agree
They’re in Super Metroid, they teach Samus how to shinespark and wall jump
Ooooh
During the final escape you can return to one of the rooms and they’re in there, you can blow a hole in the wall to save them and you’ll see one tiny pixel flying off Zebes and that’s them
That screenshot is from the end of Fusion
But yeah, they're from Super and Samus meets them again in Fusion
Friends
Which means saving them is the canon choice.
woo, all 12 artifacts
aaand I completely forgot this is where Ridley finally shows up
I was all psyching myself up for Prime
hm, phase 2 of that fight is way too fiddly, not sure if that's an aiming controls issue or a tiny hitbox or what, but for what felt like 5-10 minutes none of my shots to his chest did any damage, and then eventually I finally was doing damage again and just barely won
google shows other people saying this so at least it's not just me
It wants you to be somewhat close and directly in front, basically
nah, that definitely wasn't it
half the shots that did do damage were over 45 degrees to the side
finally done with mod stuff, so I'm gonna turn the stream back on for the final boss
how delightfully average
Did you play this entire game in one day
two days ish
^
by the end of that my left hand was getting a little sore from holding the lock-on trigger lol
gonna play Metroid Prime 2 now, because of course I am
yeah, the scan visor is totally OP
"btw, the button to open this door is in another dimension"
Hahaha yeah, the scan visor yields some surprisingly absolute information like that
Which begs some questions about how it works
"We checked the chronology of this object and found it is in a parallel timeline"
aaaaaand then it does this

"just take two steps forward, I'll do the analysis once you've absorbed it"
The Chozo and the Luminoth knew each other, but it's plausible that the Luminoth could build something that the Chozo scanner couldn't identify since they are on similar tech levels.
the really fun parts for overthinking are when the scan visor starts editorializing or filling in historical details
I do have to wonder what kind of AI she has.
It even makes predictions and conjecture.
"Recommend maximum firepower"
The ship AI isn't sentient, though.
"Oh, okay."
"but also, none of your weapons do any damage except the color-coded beam"
How convenient.
I do appreciate that they acknowledge the language barrier in-universe
so many doors in this game are blocked by translator module upgrades
finally found a planet with no Chozo ruins on it and this is what we get
It's amazing that the Luminoth have mutually incompatible writing systems.
Sufficiently so that the translator software can't deal with it
and that all are in sufficiently common use to appear on doors in the same room
One might assume it's largely them lamenting about lamps.
with all the real world examples I can think of, either the systems are all mixed together in "normal text", or one of the systems is very old or specialized
Or they're just, for some reason, all mutually incompatible encryption schemes.
for those unfamiliar with Metroid Prime 2, this is only barely a joke
behold the alien anthro moth defending the sacred lamp
he has tasked us with making it even brighter

MÄKE LÄMP
I love that the room is also being orbited by tiny moths just to further emphasize how mothy they are.
come to think of it, the Chozo planets are a bit lacking in regular birds
It's true. Any flying thing was either a Metroid or a bat or insect a flying sea pancake.
Or a space pirate with a jetpack.
But birds? I can't really think of any.
Prime 2 has some birds in the skybox that you can shoot in some places
oh, here's a perfect example of "editorializing":
Yeah. Conjecture capable AI is really interesting.
It’s even plausible speculation.
(Basically it’s right almost every time)
oh, AND it has a sense of humor
Just don’t think too much about it
Ha, yeah I’ve always found that one interesting
There are some further interesting ones in 2 and 3
I guess it makes sense from a pure writing standpoint as long as you’re not trying to make the player think about how it works
...shriekbats are rodents?
Well, bats are mammals, rodents are a subset of mammals…
But they’re not even closely related
Despite looking like rats
That’s weird

oh, and the same room has a barely living pirate being periodically Metroid-ed so the other pirates can use the life energy as a power source
boy is it hard to feel bad about slaughtering these guys lol

yeah you're right, there's way more "Metroids are not pets" stuff in the 2nd game lol
Oh no poor baby :c
Science team believes the Metroids can be trained. After several cycles of trying, I believe science team has vapor for brains.

Oh no
of all the things for me to suffer my first death of the trilogy on
why the Alpha Blogg
the thoroughness is appreciated
For when you want to be very sure it’s dead.
Sanctuary is definitely my favorite area of MP2
I am sooooo ready to get Spider Ball again
YES. Same. Sanctuary before the light is restored is just awesome, I love the effects they have going around.
Music is jamming too
Quadraxis is probably my favorite boss fight too in MP2
I completely forgot about rezbits and quad cm/bm but I'm already enjoying these enemies
I feel like I'm using a lot of super missiles, but I seem to have the ammo for it
"Prime: Metroid Reimagined" is a nostalgia-infused visual tribute album celebrating the 20th anniversary of Metroid Prime.
Upcoming 20th anniversary album as a tribute to Prime 1
geez, I think this is the 3rd time I've hit a glitch that forced me to restart my whole session
I wonder how much of this is my laptop vs the game vs general emulation weirdness
(this time I got stuck inside an object that shouldn't have existed any more)
oh right, forgot to start the stream today
good news: googling around and fiddling with the emulator settings has massively improved the performance, turns out MP Trilogy is known to struggle in Dolphin and precompiling shaders mitigates that
apparently the biggest issue is that whenever you open the map in an MP game... you're loading the entire actual world into memory
anyway, I'm one key away from the sky temple / last part of MP2
a whopping 9% more items than MP1
(honestly, that's probably because I got lost more often, which is mostly my own fault / lesser focus from doing this on weekdays)
(and as mentioned above there were more lag struggles, that likely contributed to the time if only indirectly)
Who would win in a fight Batman or Samus
I want to say Samus has a more varied arsenal, and her tech (defensive and offensive) is constantly evolving / upgrading rather than being an ancient relic from millenia ago
but I think Doomguy moves around faster in combat, so she'd at least have to try to not get overwhelmed by that
kinda like the Dark Samus 2 fight where Dark Samus keeps going into Boost Ball mode and you can disrupt it with a well-timed charge beam
Hmm perhaps
But consider
Doomguy is blessed with basically godhood because of the Divinity Machine
do we know what "godhood" means? IIRC he can die in all the conventional ways if you stand still and let the enemies pummel him
On the other hand, Samus was able to murder a planet which had functionally infinite energy available to use to try and kill her. (Phaaze)
And that was just fine.
The whole thing about Samus is that she allegedly has the ability to take over the universe if she was so inclined, but that doesn't interest her.
(This can be inferred from a comment from one of her logs in Metroid Fusion)
Kinda hard to compare to that
she was referring to SA-X, right?
Yeah, which was copying her at her full power.
right, but it also had all the scariness of X parasites in general
True
Since it could asexually reproduce
And did
Allegedly about a dozen SA-X were on the station by the time it was destroyed, so I can see that being the crux of the issue
granted, the power level gap between Samus and everyone else is still implied by all the rest of to be pretty ridiculous
Doomguy is what's known as a primeval, which is like, the most powerful warrior in the universe. The literal creator of the universe in Doom lore is a primeval as well, and Doomguy canonically defeats him as there can only be one primeval in a universe at a time. Plus, Doomguy canonically doesn't actually need to use guns, he literally just used them because he likes them (at least post Divinity Machine). Berserk power ups are legitimately just Doomguy going "fuck it" and using his bare hands lmao
I remember that log yeah
That's some Jedi shit
Because what she has done is just that unbelievable.
having (almost) the only Chozo power armor in the known universe certainly helps
hm, Samus probably is "the most powerful warrior in the universe" as far as the Metroid canon is concerned? it's not like anyone ever beats her (for long), and she is explicitly stated to be nigh-legendary in-universe
Yeah, I think that's the general assumption
albeit there's nothing particularly cosmological or metaphysical about her
the Chozo were "just" sufficiently advanced birds, and she's "just" a really effing good bounty hunter, etc
Mhmm. She's just very well trained, genetically augmented and has one of the most advanced suit and weapons system anyone knows of.
As I was typing it out, I realised Samus could maybe also qualify for primeval status, though it's a bit fuzzy on whether or not primeval just means "greatest warrior" or "greatest warrior that was specifically imbued with power of the Dark Lord"
We can discuss all we want but Kirby could beat both of them teamed up together
Literally a black hole
But Nintendo is right that he's probably the most powerful entity in all of Smash Bros.
I adore him
(Which is why he survives the Tabuu attack, that's literally their rationale)
**Galeem
Morphology: Kirby
Sentient pink singularity. Metamorph of nigh-unlimited theoretical power. Its abilities, immunities and weaknesses depend on the last creature absorbed. Recommend tricking it into absorbing something with a strong weakness to one of your weapons.
Lol what is this from
Nope, I was referring specifically to Tabuu from Brawl.
I'm imitating the style of Metroid Prime boss scans
Oh lol
I forgor
It's Been like
8 years since I played Brawl

Time for Prime 3
if Manechat will stop distracting me for a minute maybe I can get out of the starting room
so when MP3 was brand new, all these motion control gimmicks in the opening area were a little "whoa, my hands are moving the thing!
"
but now it just feels like we've regressed from the scan visor doing everything for you, to Samus having to literally push buttons by hand again
Heh yeah
Everyone caught on to Samus' scanning abilities and decided that mechanical mechanisms were safer than any computerized system.
...now that you mention it, there is literally a pirate terminal saying that in MP2
It's true.
oh crap I need to twist the wiimote
time for more control rebinding
man, on paper this is the weirdest keybind setup ever
1 and 2 - Back and Start
A and B - Right trigger and shoulder
Z and C - Left trigger and shoulder
- and + - L3 and R3, i.e. pressing the analog sticks in
Nunchuck stick - Left analog stick
Simulated Point - Right analog stick
Simulated Tilt Left and Right - X and B
Simulated Swing Forward and Backward - Y and A
D-pad - D-pad
the - and + are used for visor/beam selection, which I need to constantly do while moving and turning at the same time, so "press left/right stick down then tilt right stick" is a flow I can work into that
and then all the other buttons I need in combat ended up on triggers and shoulders because my thumbs are busy with the sticks
so A/B/X/Y have nothing to do but fake the motion control gimmicks
ah, so that's what a Space Pirate combat ship looks like
Fun fact, Prime Hack would have been a better way to play the trilogy on PC
Gives you the option for keyboard & mouse aiming.
Also comes with several optimizations
I prefer analog stick to mouse aiming anyway, but gtk
I should probably clarify: I said "on paper" it's weird because in practice these bindings work really well, at least for me
they just go against nearly every convention of what controller buttons do except analog sticks move and RT shoots
wow, I completely forgot the Federation was using phazon too
Ridley!
oh I hope the Norion Ridley fight is as good as I remember
hahaha I completely forgot he ambushes you in the morph ball pipes
nom
yeah the generator pit fight is still great
is it actually possible to get Ridley's health to zero in that sequence? I feel like I hit nearly every opportunity to damage him, and it's not like I have many weapons to choose from this early in the game
I don’t think it’s possible without some sort of speedrunning technique or a hack

Yea
…my god, I can just hear that emote.
Whoever did the sound design for Ridley in ZM and Fusion is a legend.
So visceral.
Yeah but do you think he's hot or am I crazy
I dunno I think Ridley might be a bit too quiet in Fusion, really gotta turn up that GBA
Gotta let the neighbors down the street know what you’re up to.
But is he hot???????
I dunno, he’s basically the winged grim reaper of the Metroid universe.
He’s a lizard boi
This article refers to the recurring boss. For other uses of the name Ridley, see Ridley (Disambiguation). Ridley (リドリー, Ridorī?) is a high-ranking Space Pirate, the archenemy of Samus Aran, and one of the most common recurring characters and antagonists in the Metroid series, appearing in most of the games. He is generally considered the mai...
Yeah and that's not hot to you???
I love funky looking NES Ridley
I feel like Ix was about to say something but then was shocked by how hot I think Ridley is
I prefer furries over scalies.

Ridley has that bara energy if bara energy also included "will turn you into confetti"
What is bara energy
Snrk
It's a Japanese slang term mostly used in the weeb space to describe burly men in a homoerotic way.
Like tsundere, it's a specific phenotype commonly used for shipping purposes.
shall I ping you when I get to the next Ridley fight? (likely tomorrow)
Yeah
incidentally that "Omega Ridley" fight is my personal favorite Ridley fight in the franchise
or at least it was when MP3 was new and I first played it
I also really like the surprise Samus reveal in Prime 3
After the first major boss fight. Was pretty unexpected in my first playthrough and adds more expression to how the phazon is affecting her.
Prime 3 has some cool stuff going for it.
I'm not actually sure what you're referring to... so I guess I'll find out when I see it again lol
Also for creepy sections, Prime 3 is king
There's one specific segment that freaks me out every time
Prime 3 definitely went all-in on the dark elements as far as their T rating would let them get away with.
Fun fact, Prime 3 actually has two game over sequences. One variant for when your HP reaches zero and one for phazon overload.
The game over sequence for when your HP reaches zero in Prime 3 is pretty brutal. The pooling blood is obvious, but if you listen closely you hear Samus' absolutely primal scream in the background underneath a bunch of modulation.
I'd bet Jennifer Hale's throat was hurting after that recording session.
might take a while before I can compare that to the MP1-2 death screams
Literally the most tortured scream I've heard in a video game
But it's so heavily filtered that you might not notice it at first
Oh, apparently it's in both versions. I thought it was muted in one of them.
Still gotta finish Prime but I made the mistake of not playing for a while and have forgotten where I’m at
for some reason this game really does not want me to scan a shriekbat
it consistently chooses to lock onto the tiny chunk of talloric alloy behind them instead
am I the only one who makes a point of using Hypermode as little as possible in MP3 just to prove I don't need it?
Maybe
...did that Berserker Knight just throw one of the smaller space pirates at me?
yep, he did it twice in a row
fair enough, they've got so much phazon in them now that they act as semi-decent grenades against me
@winter saddle i tire of waiting for Nintendo to port the Prime trilogy to Switch, what's the best emulator for Gamecube and Wii?
Dolphin.
Official website of Dolphin, the GameCube and Wii emulator. Download the latest version (5.0-17807) now or ask questions on our forums for help.
Dphins are evil though
Dolphin is what I'm using, never tried any others to compare
Ha, yep, the Chozo were clearly into decorating the world to hammer in the local theme
oh joy, I found the room full of post-Metroid corpses
The creepiest part of the game for sure IMO.
If you’re going into it now
Although Valhalla is pretty creepy too
You know, the Metroid breeding programs never seem to go well for the group doing it.
It never once works out for them and yet they keep trying.
Didn’t work for the Chozo, not for the Space Pirates (all FIVE times they tried!), not for the Federation.
Samus really must be tired as fuck of people trying it because it will inevitably blow up in their faces.
to be fair, in Metroid Prime 2 it's established that they are getting the power generation they need out of the bred metroids... despite the downsides
Oh really? Been a while since I’ve read those logs
speaking of things she has in common with Doomguy
Haha
hm, I think what they stated explicitly in MP2 was they had no other power source at all, so the fact that anything was working strongly implies their Metroids at least served their purpose, before we blew stuff up and the base was overrun with freed Metroids
Ahhh I could buy that, like it was just the best option available given otherwise limited resources
yeah, what's definitely stated is that the Aether outpost is severely lacking resources and being battered on all sides
And they, like everyone else, were trapped on the planet so they just did what they could to survive
Makes sense
in MP1... were they even breeding Metroids? they definitely had a bunch to study, but the logs about power generation were more like "please replace the central dynamo with geothermal, it's long overdue"
the Aether outpost had neither of those options
the other funny part of the MP2 pirate logs was the repeated complaints/concerns that they had nowhere to store all the Metroids they were breeding
The Metroids they have in MP1 were mostly taken from a fleeing detachment from Zebes before Samus blew it up the first time, but I think there might be a log somewhere saying they're starting a breeding program? I'd have to check again.
I'm sorry the metroids can fly through walls now?
I really did forget most of this game
that sounds right, I was thinking about what the Tallon IV outpost was doing, but now that you mention it maybe there was a log on the frigate about their breeding plans elsewhere
too bad the wikis only have log book entries, not the other miscellaneous stuff
Yeah
I like a lot of the flavor entries scattered around the place
Retro did a great job with that method of storytelling
Fun fact: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, a game from 2007, makes the first formal acknowledgement of Metroid Dread in one of the scans. Although at the time it was referring to the DS version that they eventually axed.
"As horrifying as is sounds, there are two of them now."
Bahahaha, yep
You can just feel the "oh shit oh fuck oh god" coming from that log where they learn about Dark Samus.
The one about Science Team giving up on trying to replicate Morph Ball tech was my favorite for a long time.
same
"Fucking Chozos and their stupid bird magic..."
I think that tech actually is unique to Samus? I’m not aware of any other entity having anything similar. Although the hunters in Prime Hunters had similar analogues from a functional standpoint, the way they folded themselves up was different for each of them. I don’t think any of them were using the principles that Samus uses.
ok I actually really like fighting the Phazon Metroids, the fact that they keep phasing through my ice missiles but can't dodge my beams makes this way more interesting than your typical Metroid mop-up cycle
Yeah, they definitely made it interesting
Once you get towards the endgame it gets a bit too easy though
What the hell why would you say this now I'm curious as to how Metroids reproduce
Do they hatch
Is there a Queen Metroid who lays eggs
Is this Alien rules
I need answers
IIRC the most complete answer is provided by Metroid 2 showing us several different stages of Metroid growth, and indeed it ends with a https://metroid.fandom.com/wiki/Queen_Metroid
A Queen Metroid or Metroid Queen is the largest and most powerful Metroid in the species' standard life cycle. As the Queen, she is the only individual naturally capable of laying Metroid Eggs, making her solely responsible for the reproduction of the entire species when artificial methods such as Beta-Rays are not in use. Only two Queens have b...
Oh so this is why Metroid went extinct, cuz Samus killed their only reproducer or whatever
also because the premise of Metroid 2 is "Samus, please exterminate literally every Metroid"
Narrator: She did not, but she got close
yep

Is she still part Metroid after Dread?
dang it, I was hoping I could just fast travel to the third bomb part but the game's too smart for that
I’d say it’s likely, yeah.
Yea I think all the Quiet Robe X did was dampen the absorbing powers from her so she could use her ship
Yea lmao
Since Metroids would normally just absorb them.
That is a good question, though. What now, then? Did Quiet Robe X dampen it sufficiently so that it won’t happen again in an unstable manner, or did he just buy her time? I’m sure the Federation would be just thrilled to learn that Samus is a Metroid and she can’t fully control herself in that state.
I'm sure they'll figure something out
“Here is an anger management implant.”
this would be, what, the third time they've stuck Samus in a science tube and put her back together again better than new?
("third" as in: MP3, Fusion, hypothetical post-Dread)
right I was only counting Federation procedures
Gotcha
Right, they also installed the PED.
Impressive they were able to operate on her and install more suit like that, given she was unconscious. Again.
Well I guess, actually, the order of events was the other way around… MP3 they could do it then since they were only building on the suit, whereas in Fusion they couldn’t operate on her successfully because I guess they lack the means to forcefully remove her suit while she’s unconscious. At least not without killing her. Thus the Metroid vaccine as a plan B.
Maybe next time they’ll be like “let’s try installing this Space Pirate tech and see what happens” /s
the PED comes awfully close to being pirate tech tbh
Oh, now that you mention it… wasn’t the PED suit based on stolen Pirate technology?
I forget whether they say anywhere that they reference pirate designs in implementing it
The Phazon Enhancement Device is based on captured Space Pirate technology. Used to gain power from Phazon corruption, it was being tested by a GF Marine battalion stationed in the Norion System. At some point the Space Pirates developed a version of the system and applied it to a large number of their troops. Marines can initiate an energy siph...
“The Phazon Enhancement Device is based on captured Space Pirate technology.”
but the whole "power boost a trooper with phazon" principle was certainly done by pirates first
Well, then
ok cool
speaking of which, pirates are attacking me now
oh, the building has a health bar, this should be fun
There wasn't a Metroid game on N64
It’s true!
That's so weird to me
One was pitched but it didn’t go anywhere, I believe
There wasn't an original Metroid on WiiU either was there
I think those are the only 2 consoles that didn't have an original Metroid
Metroid’s one original representation on the console was Smash and in the one Mii minigame thing that launched with it
You’re right
NES, SNES, GB, GBA, GameCube, Wii, Switch…
3ds
Metroid Prime Hunters was there too.
Oh right duh
And it’s canon.
I'm a silly pone

I like to think of Pinball as a remake of Metroid Prime 1
Hehe
so if you were counting Zero Mission and Samus Returns...
Yea I was counting them
iirc Samus Returns was 3DS?
Yes
Yep, 3DS gained its Metroid entry right at the end of its life.
i still think it should have come out on switch but what do I know
And turns out that Samus Returns was a test of the studio before they had them make Dread.
Agreed, but so it goes….
Ix have you read Beowulf
no
I'm familiar with the basic plot and it's the sort of thing I likely would have read if circumstances had been a smidge different at the right time
Is there a bear
I am so bad at this with fake motion controls
This was EXACTLY my train of thought the first time around.
“Wow that seems unnecessarily long- oh.”
Game: “Now do some welding under a time limit”
Me, suddenly panicking: “Why can’t I keep my hand steady aaaaaaa”
ok I lived with 1-2 minutes left
well, it probably also has something to do with me mentioning more than once that I've read Gilgamesh, Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Bible, Quran, Kalevala, abridged versions of a bunch of other myths, and I own a Tale of Genji but never got around to it
Is the Quran good would you recommend t
for casual reading? nope
I see
the Bible has parts that aren't bad for reading, but it's also a lot longer so I guess it'd be weird if none of it was
all right, seed boss time
pirates must be pretty damn optimistic if it took that many setbacks in a row to get a "we are cursed" out of the guy writing the logs
finally got the shriekbat scans
ah, is this what you were talking about the other day?
:pippwiggle:
niiice, I waited for a metroid to charge at me mouth-first so I could fire an ice missile while it had to stay tangible, which usually works, but this time it stopped charging and dodged to one side instead
btw I'll probably be unlocking the Omega Ridley fight soonish, if you still wanted to see that
when fictional space pirates have better public transit than the city you grew up in

also, that is a very... I want to say cyberpunk? train design
Industrial punk, maybe?
maybe dieselpunk
The pirate homeworld has a pretty interesting theme going
it's interesting that the MP3 pirate logs consistently say "Dark Samus" instead of "Dark Hunter"
...huh, you're right.
That does seem odd.
Maybe they start calling her Dark Samus after she brainwashed them.
that's exactly what I was thinking
(assuming it's not a writer goof
)
but IIUC the "we are cursed" log contradicts that
I continue to be terrible at predicting how long gaming takes
I forgot how satisfying the nova beam is
I'm just spamming it for the sake of spamming it
why doesn't the game tell you locking on with the x-ray visor lets you hit special weak points for insane damage
It’s in the extra info in the log book
there, planetary defense shield is finally down
yeah but who reads the log book after each upgrade
(sure I've done it a few times, but consistently? nah)
I was also surprised that in MP2, when you finally get the light suit, they don't even tell you that it makes you immune to Dark Aether's atmosphere and water
Oh yeah… I read the expanded log for that to learn that, but I recall being confused about how to reach certain areas without realizing it made you immune to the dark water.
in my playthrough this week I happened to discover a key in dark water before getting the suit, and I remembered that it made you immune to the atmosphere, so when the description mentioned neither I guessed it probably did water too
but yeah, that really should've been in the giant full screen textbox the moment you pick it up
that's way cooler than "riding beams of light"
huh, I completely forgot about this demo trooper escort segment
so much for keeping everyone alive, the 4th(?) room where they send in multiple advanced and assault troopers and they go hypermode wiped out four of mine before I could even decide I needed hypermode myself, especially when they keep running ahead of me...
Oh that wasn’t the Gandrayda fight?
...and down to 6
ok you just have to hyper before they hyper in this mission, there's no defending them otherwise
nah I did Gandrayda hours ago
yes
welp I had exactly the minimum 4 left alive at the end
the first room made me wildly underestimate how fast they can die when the pirates got serious
I doubt you can reliably save all 12 even if you spam hypermode constantly
might as well recap: after the Gandrayda fight, she drops the "Grapple Voltage", you use that on Elysia to unlock the path to Spider Ball, then you continue exploring Pirate Homeworld until you find the Nova Beam, and only then can you get to the control room to disable the planetary shield
oooh, pink pirate fight! I forgot about this guy
...and that they didn't give you a save point before this fight, despite forcing you to spam hypermode before it
so that's another death
dang I'm already locked in here and can't go back
guess I have no choice but to try cheesing him with the energy tanks I do have, since he spawns infinite commandos and there's no safe or efficient way to kill a commando without hypermode
blargh, well that's a rare badly designed fight, but at least I cheesed it on the second try
if I'd had any less health going into that it would've been a hard reset

with one tank remaining
man, boss fights have a much smaller margin of error when they require you to sacrifice your own health every time you want to damage the boss
Sorry I couldn't watch, Discord crashed immediately after I entered vc
lol
probably wasn't the greatest for viewing anyway
I think MP1's Meta Ridley and MP3's Omega Ridley are among the few bosses that noticeably suffer from the fact that I'm not using real motion controls
because they constantly want you to hit erratically moving and only infrequently available targets that you cannot lock on to directly (mostly his mouth, when it's open)
so those phases went on maybe twice as long as I think the designers intended them to
...a third Metroid Hatcher? they really like this boss lol
wait, what
it just exploded the first time I stunned it
I didn't even starting tearing off the tentacles like you're supposed to
lol, Federation logs refer to the Luminoth/Ing war of MP2 as "a local conflict"
You can kill the hatchers pretty easily now that you have the Nova beam.
Nova Beam is pretty OP
I mean it's not wrong.
oh, I didn't even think to x-ray the hatcher
maybe I hit its weak point by accident
I wonder if that's possible
I always assumed that the weak spot hitbox was inactive unless you had the x-ray visor on
I'd assumed that too, but of course it's hard to test
Yeah
this hatcher is the only thing I've noticed die suspiciously fast since I got the beam
Nova Beam does let you basically steamroll most enemies at this point
well, the ones who have a weak point and no x-ray jammer
which appears to be basically metroids and low to medium-level pirates?
probably should be x-raying more stuff
A lot of things have instant kill buttons, yeah
these hoppers don't, for example
part of it is that after I got the nova beam, the commandos with their x-ray jammers became almost the most common enemy on that planet, which really discouraged me from turning the visor on
oh, that and it took me several minutes to even notice it could do that
because I had no reason to use the x-ray until a commando went invisible
ok I got bored of cleanup already
on to Phaaze!
whoa, scan visor going through an edgy phase

oh, Cap was asking about Metroid eggs, and apparently MP3 has some
granted these are probably wacky phazon metroids and not your typical Zebes or SR388 strain
"juvenile metroids"
and that's MP3 done
(that'll probably be it for me playing Metroids until they actually release a new one)
Now play Sonic
there we go
for comparison
so apparently I am really consistent about this 13 hours figure for a casual MP playthrough
Gotta make a playlist of all the rad game covers

Metroid Prime's 20th release date anniversary is on November 18th. As the anniversary approaches, I'm going to tweet out a little stories about its development. Here is the second story:

(Thread)
Holy shit that is a clever solution. I always assumed the visor static was a texture.
Happy 20th anniversary to Metroid Prime.
Remember when prime 4 was announced
It’s been 84 years
Metroid Fusion’s 20th was yesterday too I believe
It’s true!
Love how creepy that game gets
This was sent to me, felt relevant enough to share.
Hahahahahaha
So DYKG has the scoop on previously unknown Metroid games, revealed today
Like “Metroid Tactics” which Retro Studios pitched in 2007 for the Wii. A game which was meant to be a series prequel.
Further discussion here https://nintendoeverything.com/metroid-tactics-retro-studios-pitch-wii/
VINNY
Finnaly decided to start playing metroid series
Playing zero mission now and its pretty damn good
zero mission is beated and my god the final part of the game is just something
||When the game baits you with mother brain death and that the game is going to end ,and then you habe to survive through entire pirate's ship without any weapons or power ups ,only for you to get a maximum power suit and proceed to DESTROY everything on a ship and this moment is just feels so triupmhant and epic ,when pirates are hiding in a places where you've been hiding several minutes ago but now you are the hunter||
especially for people who'd played the original and weren't expecting that new part
I really recommend playing this game , it was so good , cant wait to see wha the other metroid games have in store
I havent played the original ,but this part still was a surprize
oh yeah, I'm saying it would've been more surprising to people who had played NES Metroid and recognized nearly everything else
are you already familiar with the other Metroid games to try next?
I think trying return of samus or prime
mm-hmm, if the goal is chronological order, Return of Samus would be next
IIRC the Primes officially go somewhere between Super and Fusion but it doesn't really matter what order you play them in, lots of people have a strong preference for the 2D or the 3D
cool
Plus I know a great mod for prime wich makes it playable with mouse and keyboard
primehack?
I was only told about it after I replayed half the primes with a USB controller and my own Dolphin config
so never tried it myself
PrimeHack is the way to go, yeah
I started playing a romhack of Metroid Fusion (my favorite Metroid game, though I do love Super Metroid as well like most normies)
Called, Metroid Fusion Oil Spill
Its basically a open world Metroid Fusion that plays out more like Super than MF
Heck, the wall jump is required to get up walls to progress in the game. Iirc in normal MF, the wall jump pushes you away from the wall making it impossible to scale up a single wall
But in Oil Spill, it works just like in SM
It was BRUTAL the first minutes though
Took me LONG to finally get morph ball. Lots of rooms early on had tunnels you need Morph Ball for, which basically blocked you off at the start
But now, I'm progressing finally
This area i got into from the underwater depths area looks so COOL
LES GOO, I beat the X Core that shoots a laser at you!
Also WHA?
Charge Gates?
Okay.
This romhack is officially awesome.

Metroid Prime Remastered has gotten the Metacritic Must-Play badge and a score of 95.
It’s also now among Metacritic’s top 50 games of all time.

Well I just reached the end of Prime Remastered. For a rusty playthrough, 6:57 and 100% isn’t too bad I guess.
Interesting, they made the boss fight with Metroid Prime phase 1 slightly faster.
They also gave Metroid Prime phase 2 slightly more health
Also the credits take a lot longer
I loved that final boss
What a brilliant game, will never forget experiencing it in full for the first time
I wanna play Prime 2 soon, can I even wait for a potential rerelease?
Tried the DS games out of desperation for something new that isn’t Prime 2 or 3
Pinball is cute and I can see myself getting distracted by it
Hunters is not happening, I’m left handed and the controls are a nightmare to work
It looks like it could be fun with better controls tho
yeah, Hunters was fun enough that I made my hands sore completing the game, but it really badly needs a traditional control scheme
Y’all will not believe what I found
Some brilliant madman got proper circle pad and C-stick integration into Hunters… and if that’s not enough there’s f
king GYRO TOO
Excuse the terrible video capture, I just wanted to quickly record and demonstrate cause this is amazing
There are still a few touch screen exclusive inputs but at least now the basic looking around is not limited to that
Moving Samus on the circle pad seems to also move another hunter who has just shown up
Also I can move during the little camera cutscenes with the circle pad
D-pad doesn’t have those issues so the game still works I think
Not a chance in hell I’d be able to explain the setup process myself but here’s the thread with the patch and instructions
https://gbatemp.net/threads/circle-pad-patches-for-super-mario-64-ds-and-other-games-in-twilightmenu-with-twpatcher-and-rtcom.623267/
TLDR list of patches I've made so far
a bit more lengthy description is probably somewhere below in the text
3DS-NDS Key Remapper: generates patches to remap keys in any NDS game (probably?). Additionally allows to map the CPad, CStick and ZL&ZR buttons. To use visit the page, click some...
There are other games with patches too
Through both playthroughs so far, I couldn’t help feeling that this is what a panic attack sounds like as a music track
https://youtu.be/3cWbLagjxbA
Music from the video game "Metroid Prime"
those things were very scary the first time I bumped into them
Vibing with a friend
look at them crisp DS graphics
I love it tho, feels like a little Quake of a Metroid
Hi Sylux
Wondering if he’ll be the antagonist of Prime 4, given the hints we’ve gotten about him coming back
Right so on Frigate Orpheon there are doors that can only be unlocked by metal spheres, obviously a morph ball thing but what do the Space Pirates do about that
Is every one of them equipped with a heavy metal ball at all times
Yeah, I have no idea
My theory is that the metal sphere mechanism is some sort of alternative lock mechanism if the user doesn't have working encryption keys, but I don't think I have anything to base that on.
I don't think it's explained
There’s just one guy with a ball and if someone wants through the door they have to go talk to him
But usually he’s out at space pirate board meetings so it’s a real pain

…I’m glad that CNN felt it was necessary to make a national headline about Metroid Prime Remastered.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen CNN publish gaming news before
Made it up to the final boss in Dread for the second time ever, this time playing on hard
Tried to do more sequence breaks and tricks this run and it was a lot of fun to put the strats into action

A beautiful, 38 minute analysis of the animation in Dread
Very nice
And now I’ve unlocked Dread Mode and I don’t think so
During the final boss my heart was zooming and I feel a bit funny now, I can’t do that level of anxiety through the whole game
Prime Hunters done, could have been better on item collecting but it’s a tough game to play for long durations
The C-stick mod helps a lot
I have no idea what my item % was
Been playing Metroid Prime 2, have just died for the first time and as I suspected that little cutscene they play when you die is waaay too on the nose for what I fear the most
I think I’m just gonna wait for a Switch release
oh wait my bad, i died to a boss that was made easier in a later version that i was not playing.
Boost Guardian?
He’s famously difficult. Prime Trilogy adjusted the balance of Prime 2 substantially, Spider Guardian and Boost Guardian most of all.
I... don't remember struggling with him
though my recent-ish replay was with the trilogy
right, I mean I don't remember having a problem even when it was brand new
like this is the first I've heard of it
Boost Guardian and Spider Guardian were actually the hardest bosses in Prime 2 originally, haha
oh, boost guardian killed me once but that's because I was an idiot and took waaaaaay longer to figure out how to hurt the puddle than I should have
I mixed it up, Boost Guardian is actually the hardest.
Been ages since I played.
But yeah, it was rather unfair due to the lack of a safe zone and the damage it would deal on each hit was insane.
Like 1/3 an energy tank on each hit
Trilogy changed it to about 10-15 HP on each hit
I think what frustrates me the most is the little half second you can’t control the morph ball while you’re switching to it, and how by that point (in my case anyway) the boss is already covering you in its red blob form
And the amount of damage it does is extreme
It took 12 year old me like three weeks to beat Boost Guardian back in the day
So then it’s a whole other phase of farming health from the enemies while it is still actively draining at all times… slowly but still
I love the game so far tho, the setting is super cool and the soundtrack continues to blow my mind
Torvus y’all… goddamn fine music
Oh and when you go down deeper and it’s a Prime version of Red Brinstar… ooooo
It hits the ears just right
Genuinely my jaw dropped recognizing that melody

my memories of the original are too vague but honestly on replay Torvus was my least favorite area
though I'm guessing that's less visual design and more that the way you have to backtrack around it leads to repeating the same couple rooms over and over and over, like how that portal next to the bent bridge is always the closest portal when you're aboveground
That I have to agree with. As an area it’s annoying, the water is frustrating. The music is fantastic, though.
the parts where each room was new were just as good as anything else though
backtracking is also hard to judge because I know I made a couple of wildly bad guesses about where to go next in my last playthrough
Very tempted to wait for a possible Switch port knowing it’ll likely be based on Prime Trilogy’s version and won’t suffer from the occasional performance dips I’ve been having in Primehack
Every time I look at a map where I’ve been to most of the rooms, the game drops to half frames and the audio gets real choppy and unpleasant to listen to
Prime 1 Remastered is indeed based on the Trilogy version of the game.
I'd expect 2 and 3 to be the same, albeit not as thoroughly remastered as the first.
Prime 1 has swiftly become one of my favorite games and still I’m scared to die in it
The game over screen still gets me, thankfully I only died the one time during an attempted playthrough years ago
I have been tempted to play on hard mode to unlock more extras stuff tho, so who knows
I'm wrapping up my hard mode playthrough of Remastered atm
Just need a couple more hours
Like it’s funny I’ve played so many horror games with terrible ways to die, and somehow the Metroid ones are what stress me out the most
(I've had no desire to play them again since my recent-ish trilogy replay #fakefan)
I hate the beeping more than anything else, too close to reality for comfort
Prime 3 takes a different route with the game over screen.
It's still pretty brutal, but in a different way
(And there are actually two different game over screens)
Jennifer Hale must've had a sore throat after recording the audio for that.

Ohhh fun
Its been so long since I've seen Prime 1s game over screen that I have a hard time remembering it.
Prime 2 and 3 are stuck in my mind since I've seen them so often
I am sad that Prime 1 Remastered removed hypermode difficulty, though.
Or maybe that's just what hard mode is tuned to, I'm not certain
From my experience with Prime 1 it was relatively easy to not die, just use common sense like you see that tunnel full of blue glowy stuff? aye maybe don’t enter that one yet
I never found it demanding too much of my focus
Pretty much.
Oh but that Boost Guardian
Although if you're not sure how to beat Omega Pirate or Ridley you'll have issues
Boost Guardian is just broken though, yeah
yeah, IME most games are tuned so that you only die when you get lazy or completely ignore a huge swath of upgrade mechanics, Metroid's usually "normal" in that regard
granted MP3 has that one truly bullshit fight but eh we'll warn you about it later
I thought Ridley was alright, a bit slow, but then he landed and his phase 2 started, and at that point I was at full focus mode
Absolutely loved the final boss tho
Ridley was slow for me on replay, but that was almost entirely an artifact of emulating motion controls with analog sticks, because his vulnerable spot was just small enough to expose that subtlety
Metroid Prime is such a fun boss.
Phase 2 was a bit less exciting with how frequently Prime did the same attack over and over, but using the different visors was way cool
