Yes! You learn recipes, find cans & clean them, then you can take certain food items and run them through the cannery to make Canned versions that never go bad.

Yeah, that's usually how these work. If you get it from the pass it's account-wide, otherwise it'll eventually be a bullion item per-character.

Radstorms aren't actually that dangerous, if you have any Rad resistance at all. Nuke zones, those'll kill ya without Power Armor, a Hazmat suit, or Chinese Stealth Armor.

Prime Receivers
Prime Receivers have been modified to be vastly more powerful, but overall more expensive to use. Not only will players need to more actively seek out Ultracite ammo (see the Ammo Changes section below), but weapons with Prime Receivers will be a bit harder to handle than before.
The major changes for Prime Receivers are as follows:+100% bonus damage instead of +25%. 20% longer range +25% AP cost Higher recoil and maximum cone of fire. 10% slower rate of fire.

They're rolling back the Ultracite ammo changes. So it'll return to being a contextual drop... but in exchange, they're nerfing the damage of Prime recievers to be no better than the other hard-hitting recievers.
Later they'll reimplement the big damage buff & remove contextual drops for it, but only once they've figured out a good balance for spawning Flux & crafting the ammo.

I like pretty much everything about it more than 4 except for the crafting and gunplay
nv's quests and characters feel hugely more interesting and memorable than 4
4 feels like a total grind, especially with all the randomly generated radiant quests and randomly generated npcs with random lines, randomly generated loot, and so on
and even most of the non radiant quests feel copy pasted and generic
and the world just feels shallow overall imo
I still haven't finished it yet though, we'll see
that's not to say I hate 4 though, there's definitely some thing it does better than nv
the primary gameplay loop of walking around and shooting stuff, leveling up, crafting is way more fun than nv admittedly
and I do love all of 4's companions too, they're all fun and well written. I've been vibing with Piper and Nick so far

not perfect or anything, and the game is definitly dated these days, but the main conflict is plausible, the reason for you being involved is far more personal to the player, the factions you meet have logical reasons to exist (even the raiders have some backstory) the clothing/faction disguise system is... functional, impressive it even exists in an RPG from 2007, even the "bad" dlcs in NV are interesting to explore and discuss themes and ideas that outshine fallout 3/4's entire story, non-combat skills are far more useful...

It's not really a traditional MMO. Servers only pop up when there's enough players to justify a new one, and each server maxes out at 26 players.
You can do 90% of the game solo, usually public events are the only time you really need other players to help out. And the player vendor system is great.

I think part of it was I don't know/see any of those things given I didn't get far in. I think on my first time out of the starting town, i walked towards some people, stepped on mines and died. Then on a reload, i avoided the mines, only for the people to throw dynamite atm me anyway hahah

The chessboard is actually a Display that you can put damn near anything on. So you can take random junk from your stash & display on it, and with Free placement in your CAMP menu, you can sink the actual board into something to make the junk look like it's sitting on a table or whatever.
Honestly, worth watching this video to see what stuff you might want.

I think I was trying to build up to Shotguns/Lever action rifle, but I couldn't get more lever actions to get the modification plans.
Is the best way to get modification plans just to build a ton of level 1 versions of the gun and dismantle em?

For most guns, yes. Some guns the only way to learn the modifications is to buy/find the plans.

I've never played Mass Effect, but is it like Fallout 4?

No. Mass Effect is more of an action game (moreso in 2 & 3). It's not as sandboxy, you can choose where you want to go & do missions as you want, but you're travelling between specific locations via your ship, then going through a ground map to either speak to people or shoot things. Each game is slightly different, but overall it's much more focused on the specific story & playstyle it favors.

yeah, I can't speak to 2 & 3, but 1 was fairly linear to begin with, with talking to your crew and a less linear "fly your ship around locations" section throughout the middle
Combat is fairly straight forward? though it had cool upgrades to weapons with 1 or 2 slots per weapon
It's not like fallout 4's modding system though , with every part changeable

- Every day from December 5,12 PM EST until December 12 you’ll see an extra challenge called “Gain a Level” and the S.C.O.R.E. you will be awarded for completing that challenge will be doubled.
- Free SCORE booster (available in the shop until Dec 9)
- Caps-a-Plenty until Dec 15 (vendors will accept more items sold by you, doubling the daily cap limit)
- Starting on December 9, a free Vault-Tec Supply Packages will be available in the Atomic Shop every day until December 30. So make sure grab these extra supplies to assist in your C.A.M.P. building endeavors.
