I'm thinking about giving up on this particular colony in surviving mars. Chaos Theory has really hurt me this go around and none of the breakthroughs have done anything to mitigate it. I'm currently floundering hard to keep a bunch of small domes(because that's all I can build that have spires) afloat, people happy, while trying desperately to keep supplies coming and going.

I keep hearing incredibly conflicting reports on those HDMI-AV adapters

I was looking into one of those for when I was modding the Wii for my nephew because he didn't really have a TV and they don't make 'em with the old component cables anymore, but I luckily had the old TV I was using as a PC monitor to give him, but I did look up those HDMI adapters that people usually find on amazon for relatively cheap to use with Wiis and other older consoles

I've heard everything from it works good enough to it has visual defects it looks lower quality sometimes it straight up will not even work or have major issues like not showing colors properly or at all, I could never find any definitive answer on whether or not they even properly work

Yes, I've seen all the videos and come across all the myriads of posts about the whole CRT pixel art thing that nobody shuts up about I sometimes wish that one guy never made that tiktok that blew up talking about how playing any game ''designed'' to be played on a CRT is basically equivalent to committing murder because while I agree with the overall idea people have gotten increasingly annoying about it

but that's not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the Wii HDMI adapter's overall quality being dubious from what I've come across and the different results I've read people had with it, all the way from working properly and simply doing its job of adapting the signal to work with HDMI all the way into really bad visual artifacts and not working properly

I'm pretty sure a vast majority of people used CRTs for the PS2 yes, considering it came out at a time where most people had crts
lcd tvs didn't become common to own for most until the Wii era which is probably why the Wii while still supporting CRTs because of course it does, has options for widescreens and higher resolution outputs at 480p

Fortunately the TV I used for the Wii had component cable inputs on it so I didn't have to mess around with the adapter, but I bet it would've been a headache if I did and I feel bad for anyone trying to game on a Wii on a modern TV
all around I simply heard component cables is way better for the Wii and the HDMI doesn't really work at making the visuals any more HD than they already would look at 480p with component cables, and at worst it'll have really weird artifacts like colors being messed up and not showing on the screen, but given that I also read people say that it works perfectly I'm going to assume it varies from which one specifically you get, which is still an annoying issue to deal with anyways

CRTs are one thing I'm not particularly nostalgic for, I used to play on a CRT on my PS2 in the late 2000s and I remember the noise was one thing I simply could not handle every time I turned it on, and yes it's a huge vibe and the blurriness can add to the visuals of some games but I distinctly remember being annoyed that I couldn't fully make out the details of some texts and interfaces on some games, so even though they're a huge vibe I think I'll stick with a clearer visual image personally

at least for games from the PS2-GC-Wii era, I can't speak on PS1 because I never really owned a PS1 when I was young, but I'm sure PS1 games were probably significantly better looking on CRTs and probably didn't have the problem of UI readability, most PS1 games I've come to play definitely have much clearer interfaces and big bold texts so that was probably not a problem at the time

Goodness gracious this has to absolutely be the most ridiculously designed level in this entire game I've come across, just absolutely psychotic level design, genuinely labyrinthean nonsense and this was after I went back to record the level again just because I had to capture this levels of clownery and buffoonery going on here

I almost can't believe a whole team of people looked at this level and nodded and said yes, we should hide progression of the level behind some incredibly precarious platforming and hard to spot tight corners on places that make no sense and are actively hidden away from the player

this was the last attempt where I stood in front of him while he waddles into the pillar because apparently the AI doesn't know what to do and won't attack during that state so you can just get him

All in all Dark Forces 2 was definitely much weaker as a game than Dark Forces 1 especially after that remaster, but it does feel like a much more ambitious game and it expands on the lore and ideas of Star Wars a bunch for the time, I can definitely appreciate that at the time this game was probably the closest people got to experience what it was like to be a Jedi and I see the value of that

I had a good time with it, despite the incredibly labyrinthean level design and old game silliness and jank, because I love old PC games and I really like Star Wars and this series of Kyle Katarn games in particular, but I can definitely see anyone else wanting to check out this game having a hard time with it now, I definitely think Dark Forces 1 ends up being a much better game overall just because... it's Doom, but with Star Wars, and anyone can still play Doom today

Jedi Outcast I hear is the best one and it's precisely the one I haven't ever played so I'm excited to jump into that, but before that there's the expansion for this game where you play as Mara Jade...

I did open it just to check it out really quickly to see what it's like and it's already pretty interesting, they ditched the live-action FMVs for in-game cutscenes, the first level is already much more compact than any base game level, they have AI-companions, a bunch of chatter and dialogue going on during the level and some nice scripted sequences like enemies blowing up a wall to reveal more of the map, and this was all before Half Life 1 so that's pretty ambitious for the time
also very interesting that jedi Master Kyle Katarn wears a full black uniform, this was before The Phantom Menace so I guess people just thought this is what Jedis used to look like at the time

the funny thing is, he would go back to wearing his old clothes in the next game anyways

Every single one was technically a PS exclusive but they released collections and re-releases for different platforms

Substance was an Xbox exclusive MGS2 version before it got released for other platforms as well, the HD collection came out for PS3-360 and Vitas so now you could play 2-3 and Peace Walker but no MGS1 or MGS4, it did include MG1 and MG2 as well though so those were finally playable and accessible

I think the new Master Collection was probably the first time MGS1 was made accessible outside the PS1, the Twin Snakes was the only other way to play that game and that one is still a Gamecube exclusive

Metal Gear Rising was technically the first multi platform Metal Gear game actually it came out a year before Ground Zeroes which was the first Metal Gear Solid multi platform game

and multi-gen too it actually ran on PS3 and 360

Peace Walker is probably one of my most played games on my PSP, the first MGS game I played before I got properly introduced to the franchise and played all of the others, like 55 hours on it or something which doesn't sound too impressive but for a game you played as a kid that amount of time is pretty big
I'm glad I managed to retrieve my old save file from then, I completed a fair amount of that game using forum threads and guide videos and spent so many hours trying to get S ranks and farm certain materials to build my Zeke, which I made cyan like Hatsune Miku

I'm going to enjoy putting as many hours into the PC version when it drops, this time hopefully at an actually playable framerate, I really don't know how I played that game for so long at 240p running at 20 frames with luck

My view is that a lot of people feel, often fairly reasonably, rather burned by the enthusiasm for this sort of thing that was common maybe fifteen or so years ago and are so pretty hostile to preorders, Early Access, or the like now because they feel it's encouraging developers or other people to push out minimum illustrative products without reasonable roadmaps or plans to bring the product into a reasonably complete state.

I feel like this was less common in the past. Also, it's not unreasonable to feel frustrated if you get a game based on developer promises or expectations and then the final product doesn't turn out like that. A game that I myself got in Early Access, Starbound, is very much like that--the developer made big promises but ended up making major changes to various aspects of the game that many people actually liked, and despite receiving a "1.0" release and several subsequent releases it really was abandoned half-complete.

I actually quite like the game despite that and feel like I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it, but it's understandable that someone else would be put off the concept after that experience (and I myself generally avoid Early Access games).

I got Zortch for cheaper than usual with this trick, a game that is normally never on sale

RDR1 online was like GTA4 online, it felt more focused but also more shoehorned

neither are officially playable now, but RPCS3 + RPCN can be used to play it nowadays, or Xenia Canary Netplay (I don't remember which one)
