I think the games I like are the ones that do a good job at hiding it while you are in the actual game and not looking at the map
yeah, I think if you took the map models of most 3D games and just connected them together in a void it'd look very ant-farm-y regardless of genre
but most games' in-game maps don't do that
Fortunately people do that even if the game doesn't
meanwhile I'm one of those HK players who opens the map every five steps
Putting the map on L1 is such a good choice
I'd hate it if I had to open the map every time in Hollow Knight. Axiom Verge 1 doesn't do that
I just love how the Knight takes out the map and looks at it, that's like, the best thing
Ender Lilies lets you toggle between no map in-game, most of the map as an overlay (like HK's L1), and a tiny cutout of it in the corner
I usually have it set to the latter but I assume Gen had it turned off
I don't remember actually
yeah maps and other menus existing in-universe is always nice
people still talk about how cool Dead Space's holographic menus are
When I play Axiom Verge randomizer I use an automated tracker that shows the full map and marks parts I can reach, and parts I might need tricks to get to
mm-hmm, that's part of the reason I was thinking most games look ant farm-y; many of the trackers I've used look like that
Normally when I play Dome Keeper I do the full antfarm style ore prospecting
But the game actually has a solution for that!
A "maze" map
It blocks you off at various points to force you to stop digging in fixed patterns
Yeah Dome Keeper is pretty great
To be fair it's also a very different gameplay loop than a metroid vania tho
The biggest difference is you make your own map
It's also the fact that it's randomly generated
It's always a completely different experience, exploration wise, between games that use random generation and hand crafted maps
so far I don't think I've had a game with randomly generated levels really click for me
even in Hades it was more like a sequence of ~10-30 encounters than a "level"
All the game that I liked that had randomly generated levels, I usually didn't like them for the exploration.
They always had other elements that kept me interested
it counts as randomly generated, though I haven't played it
Daggerfall is a game
The closest I got to liking a procedurally generated game for the exploration was Minecraft, and it took decades of development and additions to get there
I can't think of any game that is procedurally generated where the levels actually shine. Spelunky, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Minecraft are all great, but not because the levels are good. It's because the levels get out of the way and never bother you
I think modern minecraft with the varity of stuff it generates it comes close enough for me actively liking it for the exploration
It still like, comes short from a great hand-crafted experience
Or even an okay hand-crafted experience
But it's repeatable which is not nothing
and it's unique to each player/server, which matters if you do the multiplayer stuff or (like me) engage with it via LPs rather than playing it myself
Valheim was also okay, but I feel like it was in large part because it's fun to sail around in that game
Rather than it being that much better for its procedural generation
Like, if they offered an handcrafted map over a randomly generated it in Valheim, I'd take that one
valheim has a story, doesnt it? im not sure what a procedurally generated map adds to the game with you have to visit specific biomes
like dont starve, i ahve similar issues with that game
Story is not the way I'd put it
You have to kill some bosses, because reasons
That's basically the story
Also you are a Viking
That sums it up
The bosses basically act as a gate for the next tier of items

I found this game
And it looks neat and all
But it also looks like they wear their inspirations on their sleeves, and they have fucking big sleeves
I don't even know if I like or hate that this game copies so many games that I can't begin counting them
I usually like it when that happens
Right, if the game was ten dollars I'd actually be interested
I only like playing a specific game once or twice so more similar games of similar quality is typically a win
This one's a hodgepodge of too many different games of differing genres
though this one doesn't seem to be any of the stuff I'm into (I genuinely have no idea what obvious influences you mean)
The inspirations are primarily games I'm only acquainted with in a shallow manner, like https://store.steampowered.com/app/1874490/Potionomics/ and https://store.steampowered.com/app/1027250/The_Alliance_Alive_HD_Remastered/
After the untimely death of her uncle, a penniless witch named Sylvia finds herself thrust into the role of potion proprietor. It's all up to her to carry on her uncle's legacy and keep his potion shop afloat. Thankfully, she won't have to go it alone. With help from some new friends, Sylvia must hone her negotiation skills, outsell her crafties...

makes sense, I've barely heard of the former

And Potioncraft is a much better game with a lower price tag
Potionomics has it beat with the characters and story, but the core gameplay loop suffers
Over 2000 positive reviews with overwhelmingly positive on the withc game, seems like a good one to keep an eye on
I have no idea who the developer and publisher are, but that thumbnail is amazing
That being said actually taking a look at the game made me realize I'm not interested
Apparently this game is a remake of an older mobile game
I don't usually like crafting games that much so it's probably a miss for me as well
But maybe IDK, there aren't many witch themed games around, I might pick it up if the mood strikes me
No mining, no crafting. What's left?
Also it doesn't seem to be exclusively crafting, it might depend how much of it is the focus
Apparently there's no witch game tag on steam
Fortunately you can instead search for magic and female protagonist to get something close
I think the most interesting game in that genre is https://store.steampowered.com/app/1340480/The_Cosmic_Wheel_Sisterhood/
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a thought-provoking narrative experience from the creators of The Red Strings Club. Oh there are tarot reading mechanics, this game seems weird and cool
Yeah, it's a creative, evocative, and interesting game that I'm looking to pick up even though I'm usually not interested in fixed narrative games
This game is scaring me https://i.imgur.com/QzfNDqF.png
That's... An effect.
This is just Maw Bank but much worse
Well it's early in the run so it'll scale real nice
But if you ever dare buy any item, even if you need it, you fucked your run forever
assuming i don't die
With Maw Bank, the relic just stops working if you buy something, so it'll often be at least a little beneficial
Yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about
In many situations, the randomness of the game means you can't survive without shopping
Ohhh, it resets it to 0
I was thinking "Well if I get it high enough it'll not matter"
No
I was also wondering what exactly that does
this was my first time even seeing the relic, i only installed it today, I think
With Maw Bank, you gain a fixed 12 gold every floor, and it's set to 0 if you ever buy anything. With Infinite Contract, you gain 5+1 gold per level you scale, and the moment you spend gold, you start losing 5+1 gold per level you scale
So to break even with Maw Bank, you need to find Infinite Contract and save up for 15ish floors
eh you know what they say
fuck around and find out
Imagine making a game where you can run out of RAM https://i.imgur.com/dmLuztE.png
At least it's fixed memory allocation, rather than dynamic
i dont like games that swear
well ASCKTUALLY
that's not swearing
No he uses gay as a swear. It was the 90s so that was considered okay back then
mario gets cancelled
he doesn't say gay
You can't fool me, I finished SM64
ok whatever
This game is so realistic https://i.imgur.com/hVMWif7.png
I have to stand on the tips of my toes for my face to fit into the hole
Apparently, I unlocked the "you found a treasure" SFX https://i.imgur.com/7zwOMqj.png
finally made up my mind on what to play today: Salt and Sanctuary, and maybe Chants of Sennaar if I need a second game
Isn't it like 9PM?
I would find it difficult to fit two games in
Good luck with Salt and Sanctuary! It can be a little bit irritating to learn how to play the game.
The first encounter ||Is a classic Dark Souls trope, a boss that is difficult but technically beatable, with a good reward if you can manage it.||
it depends on whether S&S is the kind of thing I bounce off or have my fill of after a relatively short session
like how I could only do Hi-Fi Rush for at most a couple hours before I ran out of that kind of energy
That makes sense
(I also have some optional Viewfinder levels left to do, but I'm not feeling that atm)
"Don't attempt the jump unless you are absolutely certain you can! Only a certified ninja (or archeologist) can make the jump!"
I wonder if we'll ever figure out the technology to make running a new video game for the first time not smush all my other windows into the corner before I can tell it to not do fullscreen that way
We do have that
It's called "Run in a window"
Specifically, you can use wrapper software like dxwnd or borderless gaming
And that will force applications to run in a window that won't push your other windows out or change your resolution on you
including ones I've never run before?
Yeah!
You'll need to install from source if you don't want to buy this one
gtk
dxwnd is much older, and only works for directx stuff
I guess I'll just leave all these character customizations on the defaults since I know nothing yet
welp Cthulhu just punched me
my reward for parrying correctly was 6 potatos
Salt and Sanctuary is a game where parrying is okay
You don't need it if you struggle with it
it won't let me make an offering of potatoes to the gods
sad Minoriko noises
oops ping
Oh GDQx is already running!
Runner introduction starts at 0:00
Run starts at 0:53
Bobby Blackwolf is host

damn, wasted no time
is there any reason not to immediately use Pouch Of Salt?
You lose your money if you die and have to recover it, right?
You don't lose pouches
ah
So use them before you spend salt
...is there no dodge mechanic?
since the block only prevents partial damage I'm not seeing how this boss is supposed to work
Roll through or away from attacks
It's B to roll
You get a limited amount of invincibility frames
oh duh how'd I forget I have a roll
either I really do not gel with this game or this first boss is rubbish
It can be both!
well I definitely don't gel with the soulslike part where every failure permanently removes resources so subsequent attempts are harder just because screw you
Yeah
I am 90% convinced now that the attack and dodge timings are just randomly changing on me
I literally do better when I'm button mashing than when I try not to suck
well it's dead after 20 tries and I wasn't doing any better than my 1st try
Lmao
Sucks that you're getting frustrated. This game is one where having the right set of gear is pretty important
was there even any gear to get yet?
Not sure! It's been a long while since I played last
However you do get some gear choice at the start of the game
You didn't start with the joke weapon, did you?
like I said I kept all the defaults
short of looking up a guide literally before starting, there's no way to tell what'd be better
it looks like you can level up before fighting the first boss
I didn't have enough at the first sanctuary
True! And the game doesn't make it convenient for you to switch between saves to test them
but damage output wasn't the issue anyway (after all semi-random attacking wouldn't have worked if I was underleveled)
If I recall correctly, your first boss is the knight on a platform at the very top of a building
I hate that fight
The Sodden Knight, yeah
The only other fights worse than this one are the one with the poison and the one with the fire
it should be a good tutorial boss, probably would've been if the attack/dodge/etc timings were consistent enough to do better than dumb luck
Yeah, exactly
Normally, enemies are consistent and predictable. But not this one
(This is also the reason you run like hell when you see the fucking unicorns)
anyway, exit opened and shortcuts back to the start opened, I'm gonna stop there and watch the gdq run posted earlier
There's also a viewfinder GDQ run, though you may want to wait if you don't want to see spoilers for the puzzles
well I doubt the optional puzzles are on the speedrun route, unless it's 100%?
It is also too fast and doesn't use the intended solutions
lol, of course, a speedrun of a puzzle game would be no fun if it was all intended solutions
this might be the first time I've ever heard a gdq runner explain tricks I already know about
it's funny that the speedrun route and the randomizer route are basically the same at the start
(which is why the randomizer dev really wants to do alternate starting points)
For Pseudoregalia?
yeah
I don't think everything is better randomized.
not everything is, but I definitely want alternate starts; I've done that loop around the map too many times already
The Final Fantasy 4 Free Enterprise randomizer does this sort of thing, going as far as to randomize the final boss sprite and harp song from a set of hand crafted ones
lol
But they don't mess with the start position, and I think that might be for technical reasons?
I've done random start in Blasphemous and Ender Lilies, it's very nice there
enemy rando was great in Blasphemous, gonna keep that on forever
entrance rando is mixed for me because I get lost so easily when the map is that discontinuous and unintuitive
I typically like randomizing keys but not locks
hm, what would "randomizing locks" look like?
So randomizing enemies doesn't sound as fun as randomizing weapons to kill them with
Randomizing platforming challenges isn't as good as randomizing the places you get movement abilities
And so on
ah
If you get a key you know exactly where to take it, and this speeds the game up a lot
right part of the reason enemy rando is good in Blasphemous is that you only need the one weapon for the non-boss enemies, prayers are always an optional bonus
enemy rando was a lot less good in Tunic where you need certain items to fight certain regular enemies
I rely on prayers a lot
that makes sense
for me part of the appeal of randomizers is forcing me to actually use HK charms/B prayers/etc that I usually ignore or consider not worth it after testing, because the nature of randomness is that I usually get something "overpowered" in the early game before I get the stuff I'd normally use instead
I think I agree in principle though I don't think I've ever seen the former in practice
Randomizing the map itself through procedurally generating new content is too big of an undertaking
And so most games opt for shuffling existing parts instead
yeah, that's better left to actual games
Which still has the same problem
so far all the "shuffle parts of the map" things I've seen are entrance randomization, which doesn't cause much trouble since the challenges within each room/zone/area/??? are still whole
I haven't done much of it myself, unless you count A Hat in Time since everyone plays that with act rando on (I literally got asked to test with it off because no one does that)
Well it does cause trouble because it sometimes makes things inaccessible
I mean that'd be a bug, not a game design/fun question
No, like
just like item randomization needs accessibility rules
Inaccessible until you find the movement abilities you need
I like it when I don't need to reconstruct the map in my head every new run
yeah, I like the idea of ER but I'd probably only do it in a rando I expected to devote my undivided attention to for a while so I had a chance of learning the map
(it's far less confusing with A Hat in Time because that follows the SM64 structure where the hub area has a bunch of labeled warps to each act, so those acts are what get shuffled; there's no ER going on within each level)
anyway I'll watch this Viewfinder run and then try Sennaar
maybe also make that AHiT + Pseudoregalia solo rando I was thinking of doing
I'm thinking of organization a November archipelago async, but I'm not sure if it would be rude to organize it given we might not finish Zelda in time
I might just run it after we're done
yeah, everyone but me was likely interested in both so it's gonna depend a lot on the zelda progress
Chants of Sennar is a complicated game. You might want to make use of steam's new note taking feature
Without taking notes, you may only put like 20 characters of notes on each word
I'll probably just add another Notepad++ tab
Do keep in mind these prices not anywhere near the all-time low
I got them for like a dollar each.
A few years ago Bethesda raised the prices on all their games
Yep.
Without providing any more value in return
I am surprised Fallout 2 is so expensive
I know people say it's like the best one but still
And yet it runs on ducktape unless you find open source mods.
The best games always have a little bit of jank that comes with the package
a little bit of game breaking jank never hurt nobody
grab from GOG if you can. same sales and none of the steam DRM
Meaning you have to modify it extremely to get it to work on modern machines, so most just use open source modifications/conversions to get it running.
does Steam not have better mod support or something like that?
I was wondering whether I wanted to get Cyberpunk on gog or steam because of something like that
I don't know whether it matters or not
why 2 specifically?
No DRM > Steam DRM
also a point, If steam takes it away nothing you can do. with gog you can keep the installers and no one can take it away. Also if you loose your steam account your pretty screwed
Steam can't take away games that have no DRM either
I know I have a couple of games on Gog already I just use Steam a lot more
Gotta remember to hop back into Stalker and Control I got both on Gog for under 10 bucks each
waiting for sales is the best
Anyhoo, Cities Skylines 2 came out. Not looking good.
Apparently it runs terribly.
ouch
You can make it easier to use GOG or other sales platforms with the help of https://playnite.link/
But what I was in Steam for today was to get this which I was very interested in checking out
So if I start posting about this game here, blame Ixrec
im kind of sceptical sometimes on 1st day reviewes as its soo often people who expected way more even if there was no evidence of it. But running issues thats a problem.
Wow you didn't wait for the sale that starts tomorrow
Ah well. It's a cheap game
I don't wait for sales on games this cheap
Only if a game is like... maybe around 30 bucks and higher
ouch on the FPS there.
modding needing paradox isnt surprising though
Yeah, that's expected.
I mean, you need a Steam account to even play the game and mod as well lmao.
But I get it, another launcher + more overhead.
The paradox launcher overhead is limited.
In the other games I played it closes when you launch the game. The annoyance is it's one more click before starting
they could have bought thought MS instead they chose steam. not the vendors fault which distributor you pick. and given its cross distribution it makes sence to have 1 mod distribution point accross both
got to love the littlest things people bitch about
but seriously the menu getting 11FPS thats shockingly bad
that's a pretty cool little shot right there
it's a cool stick
I see you went with the "Wear pants? No, I don't think I will." option
probably best to mention now that there's only this one and the ending
it's mostly about the platforming
I died but that was so cool
If I had a way to parry this would be like Blasphemous in 3D to me it feels really good to play
that music too
my favorite is the Empty Bailey music
I love that the clicking of her hooves makes the same noise that heels would
I'm kinda worrying a bit about not having a map but I get the sense I won't need one
I managed to resist the temptation and just let myself get lost until I started recognizing rooms
also I was about to do another solo rando of this but I, uh, discovered a bug in the randomizer's latest release
(I'm a useful tester
)
I just got fucking destroyed by a mage and a trumpet
they do that
oh hey this is neat
the sound design of this game is awesome
Oh I just now bothered to check the other options
Its got settings for camera movement and even to get rid of the slightly blurry aspect ratio resolution and the choppy framerate
huh
interesting
"how 90s do you like your games?"
also I had an a-ha moment when I realized the bubble charge ||doesn't reset until you touch the ground; you can do other moves in between jumping out of it and spending its charge jump||
I'm gonna take out the choppy framerate and keep the low res aspect ratio thing, I like that look
also whoops there's an upgrade in that picture
I'm pretty sure I'm missing something to progress here but I don't wanna say it this early in case I find it
i do wish I had a map
enjoy your non-linearity
I only worry about the constant ''did I get everything here? did I miss something back there?
''
I want to assume maybe I'll go back to previous areas or something but I just don't know, right now I entered another area so I'm just gonna go back to the one I was in and do a double sweep just in case
you will
alrighty, I hope the next upgrade I get will be || a double jump || because it sure feels like I should have one
..... suspicious assortment of haystacks
yooo look at me go
new kicks and everything
you're damn right game
lol what
the kicks are maybe my favorite move in the game
you never get a normal double jump
but the kicks are like a situational quadruple wall jump once you get good at aiming them
yeah I'm labbing these out inbetween the bookshelfs
this is awesome
yeaaaahh!!
hah, nice
they wanted to be really sure you realized this wasn't like other games' wall jumps that lock you into only hopping vertically between two parallel walls
well this is cute
It's pretty good tutorialization honestly you still need to actually get the kicks correctly so the visual aid helps, there was also two parallel walls in that section just to add a little familiarity to it before making you wall jump across after
good game design devs very nice
that's fucking adorable
oh god
and it restores HP!
oh wow I never tried that when I was on low hp
It took me so long to figure out how this jumping works I kept dying and I wanted to just see her sit down again and she plopped down and took a little power nap
I now realized that I can aim the kick diagonally facing the pillars to jump forwards instead of kick backwards
Oh wow she's got a backwards jump too
and it's slightly higher than her regular jump
when I was playing I thought it was the same height, but it turns out I was misled by ledge grab depending on which direction you're facing
I only wish I could somehow 'force' it because you need a bit of a running start to get it
she has to be locked into a direction before quickly switching and jumping back

also seems like this entire section I did was optional because there's nothing else to do here and I got a little ring
yeah you're gonna figure out half the speedrun tricks playing vanilla just like I did
I would be surprised if I felt like speedrunning this game since I don't do speedruns and this game seems pretty open
as in, literally open, it's beeg
well, I'm using them for rando rather than speedruns, actual speedrunning isn't my thing either lol
reading is hard
but this is the first game I've ever randomized with "hard" logic, because I can actually do the "hard" tricks in it
(not "expert" though)
ah I don't do randomizers either
I think I'd sooner do a speedrun than a randomizer, I am into speedruns I just don't do them myself since I so very rarely tend to replay games
I actually need to watch the LBW speedrun stil
that was a good one

look at these enviroments man
oohhh yooo if I jump after jumping from a bubble I get an air dash
so cool
I know, right? this is one of my favorite angles (it's not a spoiler, you'll find this in no time)
ugh
the Blood Swamps level in Doom Eternal is such a weird slog
it's like the one bad level in the game
Looks like there's gonna be other outfits in this game
I like her little superhero pose at the top of those poles
yeah, I did an extra jump to rotate her before taking that screenshot
Also I appreciate the way the kicks work where even if you didn't actually kick off the wall and the tip of your hoof barely reaches the wall and connects it will still count as a jump and you'll bounce off
ah yeah she doesn't turn around manually
huh
Well I'm just glad I was able to actually do this room, I thought I'd have to come back later so I'm glad I went with my guts and epxerimented with the wall jump mechanic there
Also what is it with these metroidvanias and the christian themes/aesthetics, that's two in a row I played already
Oh noooo I died and this game doesn't have autosave
the checkpoint placement is surprisingly good imo, but yeah if you fully die it's back to the last save crystal
so I usually whack every one I see even while backtracking
I'm dying way more to enviromental hazards/platforming than enemies so far
woooooaah cool cool cool
also apparently I can do this
Ooooh I figured out how to force the backflip

so.... what do I do with these?
I don't think the game explained that

You use them to activate windows
lol I had gone all the way up here because I thought it was progress and it just raised the platform further to get the key that I already got because I bullshitted my way up there spamming kicks
Cities Skylines II's soundtrack is pretty awesome.
okay so I'm not the only one that wishes this game had a little more
I'm almost 5 hours in and this game is way longer than I anticipated but honestly I found myself getting lost so much because, yes, this is a metroidvania, but it's not always exactly clear when you have what you need to progress or not, I feel like I had a waaay easier time knowing 'okay this is for later' in Blasphemous and Metroid than here
also the map, seriously this game neeeeeeds a map
with markers preferably
I also wish this game had a parry system, nothing fancy but a parry and counter attack or a simple parry would be a good option to spice up the combat even though it's not the focus, it would just make it feel more complete because the way it is I can't really cancel attacks into dodges so I end up getting hit a lot because I couldn't get out of the way fast enough after attacking
Everything else is great but knowing this is a ''polished game jam submission'' makes a lot of sense now
It definitely feels that way
habemus map!
thank you steam community ily
https://github.com/alexbatalov/fallout1-ce
https://github.com/alexbatalov/fallout2-ce
with those, you should be able to make both Fallout 1 and 2 DRM-free regardless of where you got it from
(reverse engineered engine reimplementations, similar to DevilutionX for Diablo)
5 hours of gameplay is very nice for a polished gamejam submission
this is longer than a full-blown commercial game like MDK, which most players will finish in 3 hours on their first playthrough
(still a great play, a shorter game isn't worse)
I now have 7.5 hours and I got 4/5 key items to reach what I assume is the game
Still pretty damn long
Honestly that fan made map is a life saviour, the game is surprisingly large as in the areas themselves are so big and there's a surprising amount of them, I thought the game would have tops 2-3 areas that are fairly big and be around maybe 3-4 hours but no this is a full fucking game, still a little rough around the edges of course but damn this is a full experience
it's like when I play Wolf3D, the first thing I do is open the wiki's map in a new window and put it besides the game
(ECWolf has an automap but it's too zoomed in)
Yeah, I use maps a lot for survival horror games, mainly used full walkthrough maps for my first time on Resident Evil than anything because I tend to lose focus and forget what to do and get lost super easily
I still have to do a hard playthrough of RE1 that I already started and gotta continue
Luckily for Blasphemous and Metroid I never had issues with map stuff because those games do a pretty good job at giving you info with the maps , I did use guides for Super Metroid but I never finished that one
@graceful bridge
So it need's a connection when first hooked up. Makes sense, probably wants to check for firmware updates & such.
...but its a disk slot
why does it need firmware
why cant companies release finished products ffs
I'ts not a slot, it's an actual Blu-Ray drive
blu-ray is like 18 year old technology, and sony literally did it on a console first
theres literally no excuse
The excuse is that the PS5 is over there, not inside the disc reader, and they can't deliver the software to it through the data cable because they would need to add to the cost of the device
... drives still need to have their own firmware updates. They're more than just a slot that feeds data to the computer/console, they've got DRM management systems & other features built into the drive itself.
sure but they should stilll work out of the box
even if they're missing the latest firmware it should still atleast function
what happens when the servers shutdown?
lol
In the article, Wired removed the disc drives from two launch PS5 consoles and swapped them over, but the consoles would refuse to recognise the other drive despite them being identical hardware.
This may be partly due to Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which says it is illegal to “circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work”, which in this case is the firmware on the disc drive.
As such, in order to prevent piracy (and also perhaps third-party repairs), Sony and Microsoft use the pairing method to ensure that each console can only work with the specific disc drive assigned to it, meaning users can’t modify or replace the drive.
The initial online connection requirement for the external PS5 drive, then, may be a security check designed to verify the drive then create the unique pairing between the drive and the console.```
Yeah, I'll agree they should function out of the box. But I don't blame them wanting to "check in" on the drive when first installed. That said, it should allow you to override that if you want.
users can’t modify or replace the drive
fuck off.
users can’t modify or replace the drive
Okay, that's bullshit
Wouldn't want you to replace it with a drive that does not check for counterfeit
i do genuinely understand wanting to ensure its only a playstation drive but there are better ways that arent just evil
Absolutely not. It's not up to them what kind of drive I attach to the hardware I bought
The fact it's legal for them to do so is horrifying
this is interesting since I didn’t need one
I think the main reason is that the world is small enough and the movement speedy enough with all the lategame abilities that, by the time I had a decent sense of the overall layout, it only took me several seconds or 1-2 minutes to get back to most places; crossing the entire map in Metroid or Blasphemous takes several minutes without warping
(though I still want a full map tracker when randomising it)

one of the most anticipated games of mine
I'm definitely interested in this one, but the mechanics seem pretty clunky to me so I'm a bit cautious
Dark Souls 2's lore gets kinda misogynistic when you look into it.
"Guy was super cool until he was brought down by evil corrupting lady" happens like? 4 different times
its probably unintentional but a lot of the stories of women in DS2 are not super flattering
I don't know why you pinged me for this
Figured if anyone would he interested it would be tou
I do not care about graphics in general
I played it already its really good , the gameplay is fast and engaging , the artstyle is fantastic the music is beatifully atmospheric
That's good
I think my favorite part is the reloading , to reload your gun you need to do a back flip on bike and this creates moments like
you are doing a flip to reload while reflecting enemy s bullet with your bike and immideatly hitting enemy with the gun while in air
Am I going to be at a big disadvantage in Fortnite if i havent played Rocket League?
like Mario Kart
this just means all the items you would have in rocket league will be able to be used within that mode itself
cross game cosmetic ownership pretty much
which is also cool cause all the collabs rocket league has done would be able to be used within that mode

Hmm
I'm looking for a game to play that uses mouse and keyboard and takes less than two hours
But apparently Steam has no tagging for games that do not support controllers, only ones that do
the whole game, not just one session?
No, just one session
well, "uses m&k" is not the same as "does not support controllers"
offhand I'm not sure I know of a PC game that has no m&k support, though it's often inferior to controllers (and often necessarily so) so I'd also appreciate a "Controller Peferred/Recommended" tag
Yes I want games where mouse and keyboard are recommended
But there's no tag for that
I’m oh hey warrior cats
There is a tag for controller preferred, and it's full controller support
I feel like those are two very different concepts
but I'm also not sure what "partial" even means
Means you can operate the game with a controller but some parts like the menu may require a mouse and keyboard
yikes
I don't think I've run into that
must be because I don't play any of those games people are always saying have terrible PC ports
It's more common in PC-first games
Like games that are intended to be used with mouse and keyboard
Rimworld and Factorio, for example, have partial controller support
...okay, that's fair, I have no idea how they'd do full

Pathetic that not even MGS1 is on the cartridge
As stated previously your honestly better off using emulated versions for them on pc
Gog even has the Original on its own it
Gog has mgs1 and mgs2
Granted I tried playing MGS2 a bit and the controls were actually a bit confusing and I don't know if there's any updates or mods to fix this but I haven't gotten too far in it yet
you can't just say that out loud!
I mean the port controls were confusing not the actual game controls
The keybinds are weird and I don't remember if there was a way to change them easily
These games were built for a controller
oh, I played MGS1-4 on consoles and there was plenty of weirdness there too lol
I played MGS1 on my PSP and I never really had much issues that I remember
I think I had some issues with the inventory system but I was also a child when I played it so
the inventory system was the biggest one yeah
the one I kinda wish to play on PC is Peace Walker hopefully because when I played that I also played it on the PSP and playing a game like that on a PSP is not really that great
famous claw hand going on and what not
which to be fair is less about the core controls and more about having lots of items that aren't nearly useful enough to justify the complexity of an inventory system lol
conlang puzzle moment: I thought this character was telling me I wasn't allowed to go in here, but now that I know a few words better I realize they were saying something completely different and I could've walked through here ages ago
To be absolutely fair
It's a major improvement over MG1-2
I actually think the inventories of MGS1-2 are pretty simplified all things considered, just rows of items that you can easily access quickly whenever you need them and it doesn't break the flow of gameplay by needing you to pause and select an item or a weapon
I don't even know if I'd call it an inventory considering how different it is to usual inventories in games
yeah, that's part of what my last message was getting at
Oh I thought you meant it as these games shouldn't have an inventory system of any kind at all or something
MGS3 does have a more conventional inventory so you can eat those delicious tree frogs
🐸
She has finally arrived.
WOOO SAMUS
what an incredible looking figure, straight out of the game
I wanted the zero suit version, but didn't manage to get it
I do have the Metroid Prime version though
I see a pinkie
Action pose
You sure?
Plot twist

goddamn, that is one high quality custom figure
Looks like it's signed by Viistar
their deviantart: https://www.deviantart.com/viistar/gallery
super impressive, judging by their commission prices this might have easily been 1k+
honestly thought that it would be even more expensive
Yooooooo Dread figma
I was eyeing it out the other day too
I'm not super big on figmas because I usually don't like how the segmentations look on the figure but that one is super cool
Figma ba- evaporates
Wow, really? Holy hecc
I have no idea how much it cost them, they just told me they secretly conspired and pooled together over a year or something like that.
Also gifted us this at the same time

Some amazing friends. Unfortunately we seem to be gradually drifting apart. :<
I got this made some years back. I forget the maker (I think something to do with wires inside?) and I think it was like 150ish? Not nearly as detailed as the above linked one though 😮
I'm pretty sure the artist has it displayed on their DA or something someewhere
So you can see all the angles if you can find that
I'm always paranoid about handling the statue myself, I don't want to drop it or anything

but these are really well done
man sculpting irl is just a whole other beast than just drawing
it is insanely impressive
i found a sword in Skyrim that does 0 damage wtf
Toy sword
Nice
it came with a note
Note that this sword has a turn undead enchantment that never goes away
Any undead affected will be forever cowardly
Sell it then
what if i need it
Sell it to yourself
It's useless
You can disenchant it for the unique enchantment and put that on a better weapon
(without the unofficial patch the enchantment will have no name)
so it's useless but part of a quest ?
It's useless aside from the fact you need to hand it in to finish the quest
ok so i should definitely keep it
To finish the quest you need to hand in the sword and the deed
yes i have the note
I think it suffers from having too many options at once
i need to get a house so i can store it
I played PS3 version via RPCS3 (and a DualSense) and this was my biggest gripe with it
it's hard for me to even remember what you can do in a given situation
it feels a bit like a fighting game with lengthy combos
I play other games that can have this problem at times (Deus Ex) but you are almost never required to use a specific strategy in that game. In MGS2, many bosses require you to do something very specific
Yeah. I never got very far in 2
I beat the first boss but it was pretty obvious what you were supposed to do (shoot the mirrors)
oh, and not having pressure-sensitive face buttons on any modern controller makes things harder, because MGS2 is one of those few games that rely on them
PS2/PS3 controllers have those, but not PS4/PS5/Xbox
I played it on 360
emulation has workarounds for this, thankfully
I cant remember if it did or not
the whole pressure-sensitive face buttons was super confusing to me, I only learned the PS2/PS3 could do it in… 2022
I was never aware this was a thing when I owned a PS2/PS3 as a kid
Ive not had much experience with ps controllers so i cant say
I grew up with gamecube wii. Then xbox Controllers
I did get xemu working. (Og xbox emulator)
xemu is pretty good considering the difficulty of the task, it has been evolving really fast
performance is very inconsistent across games though
RalliSport Challenge 2 is a game I can easily run at 9× resolution for 60 FPS, while Conker Live & Reloaded only goes up to 2× with a 60 FPS patch before I get frequent framerate dips (and even then, I still get some occasionally)
Midtown Madness 3 is also a game that struggles hard, while THPS2X is ezpz (as long as you disable motion blur)

tl;dr?
Anything that is extracted data through software, data mining, or other methods. Is bad.
So software and hardware that is not authorized by Nintendo, is therefore now bad.
Although that has been always a thing.
But they made it more vague.
‘Other methods’ could mean anything.
So there is a chance this adjustment was made after the Analogue N64 announcement.

beast
It's dangerously vague, but I honestly think it's...fair
Yeah, this makes absolutely no sense.
Almost seems like they want to damage their own brand.
wife, playing Dark Souls, just made it into Blighttown
me: "I'm surprised you didn't stop by the bonefire after the last boss"
her: "well, I'm feeling very confident"
literally gets caught in an attack that kills her while saying the word "confident"
me: "excellent timing."
So does that mean you should now be more cautious if you have been doing Lets Plays of Nintendo games with an emulator?
Nintendo being Nintendo as usual.
Nintendo always did not like that, so that's not new
Emulators AND third party consoles
I personally see nothing special about it
Oh did this not include the discussion on their new policy on fan tournament events that they have no involvement with?
Because that’s what I was referring to
no, it wouldn't damage their brand
but thats because the people who care enough about their policies are a minority, because nintendo is such a well recognized name
“Enjoy our products, but not too much.” is such a bizarre take.
It is probably very true that those who care (mostly 'western' 'core-gamers') are only a very small percentage of their fan/consumer base
This is, regardless, still a terrible take from Nintendie
They are a bit too protective I agree
a not so subtle way to say ''yo your currency sucks ass man''
seems like my country isn't included in the list of countries that will have this change... for now

Aaahhhh....
business as usual

Wants to DMCA anything on emulators
watch streamers and youtubers no longer cover retro nintendo content
also if a youtuber does it right theres basically little to no way to detect if your using an emulator
Easy. Makes it so people dont or cant stream retro nintendo games without* legitmate consoles which are prohibitly expensive
There is a difference between "wait no, you can't do that" and "we have warned"
we will have to see how strict they enforce it mostly
Not all guidelines are specifically to enforce
Sometimes it's just stating that's all it's worth
And how does it damage Nintendo?
How hard can it be to not fuck up re release of a old game without updating anything in it
konami: see!? you "gamers" can never appreciate classics, so we arent gonna re-release any more of our CLASSICS
or something to that effect if Konami finally embraces the fact they dont make proper video games anymore
Also Mgs 3 remake looks........fine but then again why it's even needed
less adversting less potential sales
It's pretty baffling seeing people say stuff like ''errrrrhhmmm these games weren't made for PC so it's unreasonable to expect Konami to rework the controls for PC!
☝️ ''
these are fucking PC ports
when else are you meant to rework the controls to fit PC control schemes you dunderheads
Fr it's not a fucking fan game or fan mode
The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 controls on KB&M are atrocious. Here's a taste. #METALGEARSOLIDMASTERCOLLECTION
💖 291
It's especially dumb considering that Mgs V had perfect pc controls
I really hate being that guy but people really have their standards under the ground
As if they still sell retro games/consoles
Konami is not a fucking indie studio to forgive them for this
tbh "I played Super Mario Bros with emulator" doesn't help Nintendo's sale, like, at all
Sometimes it's unfair when you say "it's so easy with this mod, the devs suck for not doing this", but Konami does suck
and there extremely dumb for not doing so
90% of people complaints would stop with nintendo if they just offered their retro catalouge in some way shape or form
ha, "flip side"
''I want to give you money for this old game''
''No we don't have it on our stores also we're closing down old stores and if you pirate the game we don't sell you you're literally the devil this is not negotiable''

Yes!

Pretty crazy year. Though one of these is not like the others...
Not sure what the criteria for inclusion in this list are
Prime Remastered was this year wtf
This is what the top releases of this year look like
Yep… Nintendo took their sweet time putting it out.
Crazy to think that most of these games took years to develop.
And these are the most reviewed games
The list Tchernobog posted has only one thing in common that I can see, they're all 2023 games

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1 has a plethora of issues that put some of the games in a worse state than their original release. We dive into where this port fails to meet expectations and why you're better off waiting for it to be patched, or simply buying the older versions of this collection instead.
Alas.
Unsurprisingly, it needs work.
Alternatively. Get the gog versions of 1 and 2. And emulate 3 on a ps2 emulator
''It needs work'' as in, ''somehow it's worse than the bare minimum''
but yeah emulators by far have the best performance and features
also yeah GOG has MGS1 and MGS2 with their expansions, I think it's the Substance version?
blows up people's computers
installs metal gear rex
Not getting my hopes up. Plus inb4 Konami cancel Vol. 2 due to poor sales of Vol. 1 or some other bs. It is Konami after all…
I'm hearing rumors around the vine that the reason Cities Skylines 2 is performing badly is because they didn't set up any LODs
''No one bought the master collection I guess fans don't really want these old classics then!''
So the game is basically rendering at max detail regardless of distance

You'd think Ubisoft would do anything to just make a game even if it's nothing just to get rid of that contract but no they keep completely changing everything about the game
i'm sure the next time people even test that game it's gonna be an entirely different genre again
also I should probably clarify that the feeling I'm talking about is that I loved RE2R and I think it's amazing but I still wanted a remake of RE2 not a reimagination in a different gameplay style
Long Story short. Its a pirate pvp game. Ubisoft is contractually required to develop and release. The problem is they keep changing things in development and it keeps getting delayed
Keep in mind. It started development back in 2013 as a AC black flag expansion and then creeped into its own game from there
''keep changing things in development'' meaning it literally changed the type of game it was like 3-4 times and changed directors so the game is a completely aimless mess that's only being worked on because Ubisoft can't escape the contract that forces them to make this game
did you know? GT4 did a Stray cross-promotion 17 years before that game released!

Does it appear at night as well? I only remember seeing it during the day.
I don't know
I’ll check it again one day.
I love that people kept modding their own cats into Stray when it came out
Q1 2024
It’s been delayed again?!
I played the beta recently but they are going to add an offline mode.
it's kind of crazy to think about how in the Insomniac universe Peter hasn't fought Green Goblin yet

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if when it comes out it turned into a card game
Gwen also doesn't seem to exist in the ps4 spiderman universe
Let's be honest, Ubisoft needs to take the L, put it out at 20-30 bucks as a AA multiplayer title.
It's a bit hard to do that when you literally don't have a game to put out
There is no amount of toil on this game that's gonna make it worth full price
People are leaving the development, directors are swapped, this game is literally nothing
They have one, people have played it in open beta stuff
It's just not very good and very shallow
Yeah but that's a beta it's not the full game and as much as they've done it I don't think they would release an actually unfinished game
im hoping Green Goblin is in the next one
It's what I mean, they need to scale down the scope, tighten the mechanics so it's fun for at least a 20 hours worth of progression and okay for multiplayer.
And hope that a lowe pricepoint it finds enough people to recoup at least some of the development cost
Like, there is no way that it makes money anyway at this point
That would require a team of devs with a semblance of guidance with this project but it doesn't really have one, they already had 'playable' builds before the beta but all got scrapped and I'm fairly sure the beta people played is likely to also get scrapped
The beta people played was basically nothing like what they had first shown and I don't think they have it in them to admit ''yeah we can't deliver on the game we hyped up originally'' so they just have to somehow do it
Even if it takes 20 years
The funny thing, is that they already made this game 10 years ago
It's barely any different than the naval side of black flag...
At least the recent version
Persona 4 Golden physical includes a reversible cover. Preorders go up tomorrow at LRG https://bit.ly/3tOOkaW
Persona 3 Portable preorders currently available http://bit.ly/455pmAX
That was the original idea but then gaming trends started happening and now it has to be an open world but it has to be a battle royale but no it has to be this and that
