Nope, never heard of it. Keep trying
Hint: It was released in th 21st century, ie 2000 to now
Sonic X for the Leapfrog Leapster?
No, but I wanted to play Sonic X when my brother found an old busted up copy we never got working
Let's see.....
This will narrow it down quite a bit: It was on a handheld console or device
So it could be for the Leapfrog Leapster đ
No...
Anyway⊠Sonic Colours on DS?
Closer, but still no
Closest guess yet, but still off by yards
Sonic Battle
Sonic Rush
Never heard of it. Keep going you got this
Sonic Advance
Sonic Generations on 3DS
Only memorable things about that game was the music for the Big Arms boss fight and it having a version of Sonic Heroesâ special stages you could control wellâŠ
Alright I just lied to myself and you: I have played one more game, and it was all the way through.
Feeling lucky lol?
Yeah I played the first world and couldn't beat metal sonic for the second emerald
The other game I played is on a home console
Sonic R
No.
Alright here: It was on a nintendo console
It was Sonic: Lost World on the Wii U @heady bridge
RE4 is like Skyrim, it must be ported to every single available platform and must be re-launched every couple of years
Considering Capcom has made RE4 and even DMC4 for mobile phones in the past I am not a little bit surprised they also went with RE4R for phones
They're an executive, why wouldn't they say that?
"Development costs now are about 100 times more than they were during the Famicom era, but software prices haven't gone up to that extent," he explained. "There's also a need to raise wages in order to attract talent. Seeing as wages are rising in the industry as a whole, I think raising unit prices is a healthy business model," Tsujimoto concluded.
it's also a thing basically every expert's been saying about the industry for years, not just executives
of course the real problem is too many games are too damn big, and most of them don't benefit from sheer bigness
I heard that Phantom Liberty is actually really good from what I heard
definitely a much better first impression than 2077 was on launch
I'd say the bigger problem is that most people aren't getting a raise in wage to be able to comfortably afford most game releases especially at launch which coincidentally seems to be the most important period of a game economically anyways
I at least appreciate the comment about raising the wages of developers as a consequence of increasing the prices of games, even if it isn't the president's main priority still
hooray !!!! one of my favourite games ever
Games being too big also leads to the increasingly common problem of games releasing in buggy, glitchy, or in the worst cases literally unfinished states because they just didn't give the devs nearly enough time to actually finish the game
Super Mario 64 is still the best 3d platformer ever i think, maybe Odyssey has a slight edge on it
That's... debatable

I remember when it was brand new
Same ma
i would have been -6 when it came out
I would have been 3
The problem here is they're not relating development costs to market size. The market is way, way bigger than a hundred times bigger nowadays
man i should replay it
I was 4
Mario controls so nicely it's satisfying to just move around
annoyingly I couldn't get the SM64 randomizer I tried to work, so A Hat in Time is fulfilling that niche
though I intend to play the other platformers that were in the same bundle as hat in time at some point
it also has the best video game soundtrack ever
Also debatable
But it is a banger
I have a very strong nostalgic bias towards SM64 and I would say it aged rather well, but I wouldnât say it maintains âbestâ in any of its categories.
The soundtrack is indeed very good
not a single bad song on the entire ost
i mean, every 3d platformer ive played that wasn't a Mario one just never did anything for me
Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper were my childhood platformers
SM64 was a "retro game" by the time I played it
you may be. you know. slightly biased

i mean yeah of course i never said i wasn't lol
This release has been fun to follow. Don't forget that Starbreeze also publicly blamed the networking issues on their cross play partner, Accelbyte đ”
Basically said that they were incompetent and that they'd drop them down the line
i guess i haven't played too many 3d platformers excluding Mario. i tried Hat in Time and got bored, same with Spyro (sorry GT) and Crash
Knack?
Banjo Kazooie is pretty great
ive never had a Playstation đ
I never did get around to trying Spyro, Crash or Banjo
I'm trying to think of exceptions, but I might agree. I'm just not big on 3d platformers
well
But who doesn't like Mario 64?
outside of Mario they dont really get made anymore
Bubsy 3D is the greatest 3d platformer /s
Yeah, pure platformers are not usually as fun as platformers with other mechanics too
"just" platformers do seem to be just Mario and then some indie games these days
it's always puzzle platformers or action platformers or precision platformers or metroidvanias which somehow got so cleanly separated "platformer" isn't even in their name

does Doom Eternal count as a 3d platformer
probably not
afaik Mirror's Edge is still the only notable first person 3d platformer
dunno that one
you run and are a ghost i think probably
Point made.
Doubt it

You can basically think of it as cyberpunk Neon White but also you're a ninja slicing people
the second one is coming out and it was on a bunch of game conferences
there are too many games to play now
only a little over 2 weeks before the Arkham Trilogy comes to switch :D
at least there's one I did play
I've been saying this for years. We have to stop making games and let everyone catch up
I haven't even played Castlevania 2
You should stop buying them then
did yoy ever finish Doom Eternal
As for 3d platformers I played Crash Bandicoot 3 the most and Spyro a bit
I haven't spent a dollar in 8 years, Flitter
I am still on the final boss
But the genre doesn't really interest me nowadays
yeah Icon of Sin is a tricky bugger
Yeh
what phase are you on
Then good
Break da armor shoot da guy
I lied, I've spent more than $1 in the past 8 years
That's fair but make sure it goes to games you want more of, not ones you want to see less of
I have exchanged currency for goods and services
Hollow Knight is really good at making me think I'm good at this part and then immediately reducing me to one mask
wow mimics have a lot more health than I remember
feels good doing the Mantis Lords in one try after all this time
...the downside I just realized is that I still don't have the mantis claws, so now I have no choice but to go into Deepnest
Mimics don't have a lot of health than you remember. You probably have a lot less damage than you remember
that too
I did get a pale ore but haven't made it to the nailsmith yet

let's try it
Blue bile flasks are better than red ones
Especially if you have the red reliquary and a prayer-focused build
this room makes me think of Totoro
omg tototoro
that is a very appropriate place to shuffle that
can't believe Tiso is a gatekeeper
also, somehow capitalism took over the pale king's sealing spell and the dreamers are just in shops now
this shows we need cross-platform game purchases, when it comes to PC/mobile
Pony Bros, we are so back
Ngl its super surprising see that
Now that the N64 and Super Mario 64 are 27 years old, hereâs a reminder (or a new update for those you might not know!) from a three year old video discussing a major reason why Super Mario 64 is as laggy as it is.

Correction: Many people have informed me the EverDrive loads ROMs into its memory and does not in fact stream them from the SD card. That's my mistake in fact-checking this video. Of course ma
i have that on my Switch
i have t played much of it though
Every copy of it is personalized duh
It still blows my mind that they simply neglected to switch on compiler optimizations.
We still donât know why.
Aside from âthey likely just forgotâ
this is why automating the build process is important
They were probably wanting to rush it for holidays
But the PAL version does use O2 optimizations
It and crash bandicoot really set the foundation for 3d platformers
it had already been delayed almost a year
That wouldnât matter, though.
I played it on launch through epic games store, but fuck epic and their launcher
Itâs literally just adding the -o2 flag to the compilation command
Epic > Steam
I would say Epic = Steam, but Epic at least gives away some cool freebies sometimes
Thats about the only thing epic has going for it
All Steam did is popularize modern DRM
Steam updated their ui recently it looks much nicer now
That's true
for me, Steam is what made PC gaming easy, often even easier than consoles
Somebody should force Steam to remove all DRM
sadly that kinda relies on it being a monopoly which isn't great, but it could be abusing that a lot more than it is
DRM is enough abuse in my book
I'm not aware of Steam actively pushing that tbh
they seem to just allow games with or without DRM and lots of games choose both
Yep
Valve has no real opinions on how games get submitted to Steam.
Personally I think they should ban the redundant launchers.
it's also the least obnoxious form of DRM I'm aware of
even Steam's own documentation says
The Steam DRM wrapper by itself is not an anti-piracy solution. The Steam DRM wrapper protects against extremely casual piracy (i.e. copying all game files to another computer) and has some obfuscation, but it is easily removed by a motivated attacker.
GOG just allows you to download an EXE
Unfortunately, even this alone will sometimes ruin your day on a Steam Deck if you're on the go for long enough. Or forget to launch the games you plan to play ahead of time with an internet connection.
yep, which is why I'd be annoyed if this was required
Indeed. Pretty sure you can be totally DRM-free on Steam if you choose to?
(which it is if you use "steamworks features", but that seems actually inherent to those features so fair enough; much better than needing Denuvo to make cloud saves and leaderboards and microtransactions and so on viable)
yeah people have linked The List of drm-free steam games here several times
Cool cool
Epic does not offer a DRM solution, but like Steam doesn't control what DRM developers bundle with their games
A new Sunbreak event quest just dropped, and it's a hazard Amatsu.

Majora's Mask reference!!1
(for context, Valve has been teasing about "What are you doing next Wednesday?")

I guess itâs time to show off their next hardware update
Whatever that might be. Index 2 or some smaller thing, perhaps.
I could see an Index 2 happening before too long. Original Index is really good but a smidge long in the tooth.
Is CS2 not out yet?
I thought it was already
it is out in Limited Test form only
most people who have prime status in CS:GO, a competitive rank and good VAC standing have CS2 access
Huh
Holy shit, if that had been my fault I would've just curled up into a ball forever
Itâs entirely possible that it was intentional. Nobody knows.
But if it was intentional, nobody can find a compelling reason why.
that long ago, I'd buy all sorts of reasons, like they just hadn't worked with that compiler and optimization level enough to be comfortable shipping it until the PAL release tipped the scales by falling under some other highly valued performance metric
vibes-based software development is a lot more common than we'd like to admit
(and always will be because users will judge our software by vibes)
Ok hear me the fuck out
CS2 VR
Steam VR 2.0 beta just dropped, meta connect is tomorrow
Last time the valve index was announced hours before the oculus event
Yeah cs2 might be out tomorrow

If a strike does go through dont expect much game dev progress in regards to the âtriple aâ games industry
This is about the acting, not the development
Yeah, but I don't imagine a lot of AAA videogames get developed without voice acting
It's not going to grind the industry to a halt though
Not like movies anyway yeah
Sure. If a game already has the voice work done that game can release. If a game doesn't, they'll only need to hold as long as the strike lasts
I feel like many devs can use placeholders and work around it. It might stop them from releasing a game, but otherwise they still need to do everything else for the game other than lip-syncing to a VA.
I personally prefer games without voice acting most of the time
Honestly the rest of the video game industry workers should strike
This was brought up before when Bayonetta's VA did that absolutely horrible reputation ruining stunt but particularly programmers I believe were mentioned as some of the developers that get treated not so well in the industry
QA in particular are maligned
They'll have to unionize first. The vast majority of the industry hasn't done so yet.
Every boss of every company, really
Nobody wants a unionised workforce
My employer has a union now, but less than 1% of employees are members so I am not sure I understand the point.
(and a lot of the members aren't employees which further confuses the situation, but is also part of the point)

(personally I am not opposed to a union but I am also not jumping out of my seat to pay the $4000/year union dues.)
Doesn't sound like the purpose of that union is to do much else than take money
AWU-CWA is a union of 1400+ members strong. We strive to protect Alphabet workers, our global society, and our world.
Oof, alphabet, that's an uphill battle

Indeed, but the confounding thing is that there have been no bug differences found between the unoptimized and the optimized versions.
It has been like five years now and there's still no good answer for why they might've done that intentionally. Thus it seems safe to assume it was an error.
A lack of trust in optimisations?
Distrust in compiler optimisations was common
(Often for good reason. Often for less good reasons.)
-O3 in particular was distrusted because it does poorly with sloppy, unsafe code
-O3 works great if your code follows best practices⊠but this wasn't the norm in the 90s, especially for plain C

A leak came out from someone within blizzard. Take it with a grain of salt.
Some stuff that is interesting:
-Overwatch is relaunching, again...
-WoW is going f2p w/ battlepass
-Diablo 4 is going to have a soft reboot with a new expansion
-Blizzard is going to be broken up by Microsoft. Distributing the IPs to the other game studios and reusing their real-estate.

D4 news is the only one that is realistic. The only "breaking" that they might do is separate Blizz from Activision, instead of being ActiBlizz
Rest is bullshit
Meanwhile I heard that Chris Metzen is back in WoW team
He has been a consultant creative lead for a while, now he's doing it as a full time role
Only guaranteed news I know of atm is some layoffs, with a number of them centered on the Hearthstone team
Idk, the Overwatch one sounds like it could happen, at least.
The WoW stuff sounds like BS though, I agree
If they get the nod from Microsoft leadership to attempt their initial relaunch plan (with PVE and so on) there's a possibility but i'd say it's pretty low on that list
WOW and breakup ones are guaranteed đ©

Farming out any active game to new teams would pretty much delay any updates for around a year.
Now if they said they were farming StarCraft out to Microsoft's RTS team that'd be believable.
That, I'd put more stock in, agreed

Like they did with GoW and Spiderman
They put the first one on pc before announcing forbidden west, I think

Twitch drop for Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty, but for one of them you have to buy two subs to participating Twitch channels.
That's just a ten dollar DLC but also you have to do work
Eh, putting Twitch on in the background with the tab muted isn't really work.
that's like
ten dollars vs. thirty, but i get that time investment is a bit of a drag
Actually closer to 6$ right now, it's subtember so it's 25% off
... do prime subs count
I think they're supposed to.
Note that not everyone doing the regular Twitch drops qualifies for the Sniper Rifle sub drop
I almost made that mistake with one of my regulars, she's doing the general drops but not the sniper rifle sub drops
That's... Dumb.
Guess only certain streamers get the sniper drop
Which is dumb.
Like I get the mentality at face value, certain streamers have more desirable metrics, or something
Some things like genshin give it to any streamer that streams it
yeah but that's Genshin lol
Oh, there's also a helm drop, but it's also locked to specific streamers it seems (thankfully the same one that does the sniper rifle)

It's only weird because you weren't playing country music
Honestly even without her combat capabilities I'd keep her around just for the banter

Yeah that accent is overdone
I feel underpowered
So, Sony's lineup for free games in general, despite not being able to argue with free, a game that had potential but ended up being another letdown AAA release with many issues, a now outdated simulator that comes out every year, and a game basically nobody has heard of. Good one, Sony. I know all months can't be winners, but still
Yeah the voice actress (which is the same VA as Padme in Clone Wars

I think it's cute
all this french dessert is making me hungry...

there is too much going on in that d
I'm sorry "huesos" (bones) sounds too much like "huevos" (eggs) I know it's dumb
it means 'said skies/heavens'

I thought it might be that kind of "said" but the dictionary I was using didn't have that usage
Really? It's the first definition I find

well I've definitely learned the -d form now, every quest giver uses it
I feel like I'm missing a joke because I know all those words
French accents in English usually get me to switch to a French language, I find it more annoying than endearing (unless it's clearly done for parody purposes, like in Deus Ex)
I did that in Plague Tale Innocence, where a lot of characters have that accent (which makes sense for story reasons)
the French dub in that game is pretty good anyway. The game is made by a French studio, so it better be đ

they couldn't stand to fall behind in cuteness

makes sense, that's just little + horse, like ko + uma
Thanks, I hate X.
so does CSGO not exist anymore
Dead game!
Yup
that's kinda lame
Ah, but it looks like they haven't actually updated the Steam binary yet
Right now it's just a stub
Do you play it often midnight.

I like CS but not for competitive.
half life was in the launch trailer yippee
I like shooters, but CS is like... a somewhat arcadey shooter
Too twitchy, not the sort of feel I enjoy
oh that sounds like my type of thing
it is
i just don't really like voice chat it kinda terrifies me
I prefer more realistic ones or ones like Halo. CS fills the void that I dislike.
Basically if it lacks inertia, I don't like it
more "twitch" shooter than arcade
Yeah fair
CS is extremely twitchy but it's also extremely team based / tactical
I guess Halo is more of the arcade style, sorta, kinda

yeah probably, i played Overwatch for a month when it released on Switch
Overwatch is sweatier
I played OW for a bit with some Manechat peeps, but yeah, it's far too annoying for me
CS is even more serious than overwatch, but it's also way more simple
well maybe not wasted
ive been playing fort like every day since july of 2019 ngl lol
first-person MOBA? /flees
i love TF2 i haven't spent a single penny on it
i got like 9000 hours on fort at the moment

yeah lol
Hell no lol

382 days of non-stop playing
Isn't that Smite?

plus 10 hours and 52 minutes
CS2 seems to be a bit of a trainwreck.
How would you rate fortnight as a game on a scale from 1 to 10?

Missing binaries, people reporting no audio on the linux version. (Blame pulseaudio, probably)
mainly the zero build mode that is
havent touched builds since zero build was introduced
Well then it's already doing better than csgo was at launch
prob a 6 or 7? i had lots of fun with it but it also felt like a chore at points
my main annoyance with the game is that even the zero build mode is way too sweaty now lol
i might get a win occasionally if i somehow get lucky
other than that i always get down to the last guy and then get instant killed

top gun 2 only had f/a-18 jets because the government would not let them use f-35s or f-22s
We should of had a Vic Viper fighter by now. I am disappointed in this future.
It there for maybe 10-15 seconds in the intro.
Also the F-35 can launch vertically I believe.
why
One of the three variants can
because literally too new and classified
^
lame
they spent a few billion dollars on those things, they're not letting people see it lol
Theyâre currently the best they have.
i think Tom Cruise (the king of movies) should be able to do whatever he wants
Although that will change one day.
The other part is that the F-35s were barely in service when Maverick started filming in 2019.
oooh
also probably would've cost a fuckton to even have such a new and classified piece of equipment considering the jets in the movie cost like, tens of thousands of dollars for every hour they were used
Like maybe a few months prior, so there's like no service history or heritage for the planes
I don't know anything about Top Maverick other than the fact that Tom Cruise met real life horse girls
what
Horses
I don't know anything about Top Maverick I've never seen it
Maverick hunter X
jokes aside the context is that Top Gun Maverick had a crossover with Uma Musume during a promotional thing for the movie
and that's Tom Cruise with the seiyuus for the horse girls
they did a crossover with basically all plane related video games too
ace combat, flight sim, dcs...
CS2 has been live for 40 minutes and already made $40 million from case openings
jeez
Was it all spent by XQC?
Gambling addiction is one hell of a drug
we don't say "skin", we say "proto-NFT"
lol
The only sin CSGO and TF2 commited is introducing crates, skins and hats into the gaming landscape
Why Gaben, whyyyyyyy
Because that shit works, lol
that model was already there in Asia, but they ported it to the occidental market
I think the only skin I had in CSGO was, coincidentally and luckily, a skin for my favourite weapon in the game and I never felt the need to ever get more
So I got off lucky...
Clever girl...
crates are a problem in games sure, but just regular character skins/weapon wraps/etc are fine
I kinda agree actually
only if the game itself is free though
I always sell my drops in CS:GO, it's how I make Steam wallet bank
microtransactions do not make sense in a paid game
theyre fine in a free game though
just as long as they arent pay to win, and are cosmetic only
I've bought many games without needing to tap into my bank account thanks to this
CS:GO is literally play-to-earn, like those NFT games promised to be
sure, you don't earn much, but you earn something
Think about how much more you could earn if you unboxed some knives tho...

Sounds like something that an unlucky person would say!
I've never bought a crate/item in CS:GO other than a battle pass
(at least a battle pass isn't risky, and you can sell the drops you earn from spending stars)
it's like we always say, 16th time's the charm!
if you buy the right things with stars, it is possible to make more money than the battlepass cost you đ And you get to keep the operation coin

I just got this heart, and since I don't have any other hearts that are really usable atm, I decided to equip it
@visual hill wanna hop on cs2 rn i dont hvea anyone to queue with rn
and full random queue sounds like a horrible idea
Linux version has a bug where it has no audio at all, but a launch option can be used to fix it. I'm playing a deathmatch game right now
I think RE4 had some pretty cool visual setting options too

12.5% increase for 1,000 and 13,500, and 15% increase for 2,800 and 5,000. The relative price increase for the highest and lowest tiers are effectively the same, but the middle tiers were increased slightly more.
This game is good about letting you know which attacks you can parry by feel. Light attacks can almost always be parried. Heavy ones sometimes knock you back (so no ripostes) and projectiles usually can't be parried.
A lot of attacks from many enemies can be parried and riposted. This game is good about it
I've been doing more parrying and basic ranged attacks this time around and yeah it's pretty solid
just haven't gotten to ripostes yet
Regular ripostes are automatic
most of the enemies in this area die to one regular counterattack
Just don't move
Righteous ripostes require you to hit at the correct time during the riposte
right, I meant haven't gotten to righteous ripostes
I'm used to just calling the regular kind a counterattack
Me neither
even the Spanish tutorial calls it a "contraataque"
I just stick to regular ones, but if I play the game next I'll try to get some practice in
Huh.
next time I'll definitely start with dash, combat is just so much more fun when that option is around, especially when unparryable stuff is involved
what I'm less sure about is random start and enemy rando
Contra is awesome
the eyes are finally here! Finally, CS is a match for TF2 and L4D2
the combination of them was weird, in a way that's entertaining since this is just solo rando and no one cares if I need multiple hours merely to escape the starting area with <5 checks
enemy rando does buff/debuff the enemies it shuffles for balance, but on the assumption you proceed the normal way, i.e. not random start, so it can simply do "earlygame enemy in lategame area -> buff" and so on
so I feel like I should only do one or the other
but I like both
I wonder how easy it is to edit the randomizer so it accounts for both settings (make it harder as you move away from the starting point instead of vanilla difficulty scaling)
I suspect deciding what good logic would be is harder than editing the code
the order one goes through the areas in a random start depends on a bunch of other stuff about the generated logic
e.g. because I shuffled dash, I simply cannot do graveyard of the peaks or most of jondo
Or you could just do them anyway
There's no place that actually requires dash as far as I know
are we talking about glitches?
No but I did forget that without dashing you couldn't slide through narrow gaps
you around?
Either way, the goal of this change would be to provide a measure of leeway difficulty-wise, rather than make things as easy as possible
ye im in
I can imagine the fleshy blinking noise in my head everytime the character blinks
just cahnging some settings but you can inv me
I wonder how well a simple "adjacent areas are +1 difficulty" heuristic would work in practice
Ideally, you would want an easy path to Albero, and a path to at least one of the sanguine fountains
ill have to restart discord it seems
I see that too
To minimize struggling with insane enemies and no healing

I started on rooftops and had to fight my way down to the church, but then simply going left and out the big door worked fine
apparently Esdras won't spawn there until I get the three wounds, it's just a one-way door if I come from the right
Esdras is genuinely the hardest boss in the game
ima give one more try and reset my router
isn't it always
I have no idea how to handle the bell-hammer soldiers like Esdras. They just block most of my attacks
yeah I still can't have working VC đŠ
shit compressed valve vc it is then ig
they also don't stagger
They do stagger when they don't block
my usual move is to rely on them being briefly vulnerable whenever they do the swing in multiple circles attack
sorry they don't stagger easily
I mean you can't force it by using powerful attacks or prayers
Discord is the most flawless software ever created
The romance of the crimson mist prayer is my preferred way of staggering them
But it deals very little damage
I've been using crimson mist a lot, but mostly because rando keeps giving me that when I have no other good prayers
It pairs very well with parry invulnerability
but I also keep lucking into situations where it deals a lot more damage than my sword

Tony Hawk is so long lived at his sport that he basically outlived the videogame series about his legacy
sweet, the yarn I found in Blasphemous was exactly the kind I needed to do the next Hat in Time level
Playing Bomb Rush recently really took me back to my tony hawk underground 2, project 8, downhill jam, and american wasteland days
I was so obsessed with tony hawk as a kid man
How long is that game?
uh
6 hours
well my steam play counters are useless now that I've played them more than once
helmets and knee pads are cool đ
6 hours sounds short to me even for AHiT
though I did do a lot of the DLC
I want to say it has ~15 hours of content at this point
Nice.
Six hours is the archipelago run estimate
ah, yeah rando runs are very different from a first vanilla
So it assumes you're going through most of the game, you know how to play, and your goal is just the end screen
since the final act is hard-gated on three of the hats, you probably need to get a large portion of the yarn at least
In multiplayer it takes a lot longer because of the back and forth overhead
The final act has an out of bound skip that's relatively easy to do!
In the big long lava hallway, you dash towards the left wall and clip out
From there you carefully climb up and run over the level
(it might be fixed in the current version? I haven't played in a while)
howlongtobeat says 9.5 to 18 hours, that makes sense
that same site says it takes around 28 for blasphemous' 100%
that sounds about right, I do have around 28 hours
honestly more content than I expected there

EA is pulling all the FIFA games because they own the game, but not the FIFA name, which FIFA is using for their game.

Average Cyberpunk 2077 bug
... CD Projekt are really not doing themselves favours, I get that it's a big game and they're trying but
This really does not look good, lmao
That's certainly a choice
The concept of "fuck you choice" sounds very cool and tempting on paper, but I personally think it is the kind of a thing which should only be an idea and never actually work like that
At least there should be a bail-out option
... THAT'S EVEN WORSE?
I get the idea
The choices have consequences, but there's a fucking limit
Hell, why not make a choice that permakills your character?
Dragon Quest did it first
Start from 0, fuck you
the ultimate "...well shit" feeling
I saw a video of someone driving around and running someone over. Turns out that npc was someone you needed to protect and shuts you out of phantom liberty completely

Wait is this a problem?
If you go up to the main mission of the expansion and say Well, I'm out, good luck you fuckers" would it be better if the game forces you to do it anyway?
No, but instead of responding "Fuck you and the car you rode here on." They should say "You know that's pretty rude but you're welcome to offer help later if you change your mind."
Depends on the context
Even if it sounds a bit less realistic as an option it makes sense to offer it since it provides players with agency
In RPGs you can lock you out of quests by making certain choices, I don't think it's a bad thing.
You're basically a merc in the game, there's pleny of others that can fill your place
So these folk aren't likely setting wise to come back crawling to you, you're not that high up a totem pole
It's really a non issue IMO
Right. The issue happens when you select that option by accident
That's where I land on it as well. This sort of thing needs forgivability.
I mean, with how often the game autosaves, I'm pretty sure it's easly fixed
Autosaves won't help you if you only realize you've been locked out hours later
So a warning screen that goes "Hey pal, if you pick this option you can't play the DLC." Might help
IDK the game seems pretty obvious about those things, assuming it counts as a failed mission it'd be announced on screen
Also yeah, the article says that characters phone you to tell you that you let them out to dry
Seems hard to miss
Also I'm pretty sure it's not strictly true you can't play the DLC
I havenât played the game in a while but you can make manual saves right?
Classic RPG thing, quicksaves and hard saves, plus a generous amount of autosaving happening
I think this happens when you already got access to the new zone, you can't progress the main story but the zone and all the stuff in it, and I assume the secondary missions are still accessible.
If for example, you already played it and don't want to do it again in a 2nd playthrough, it could make sense for you to chose to walk away.
iirc you are basically blocked from the main questline
Not the area itself
And instead of perpetually leaving the mission hanging it's nice to have an actual fallout from you chosing not to get involved
If you choose it on accident then yeah, autosaves will help. Otherwise the context here is not that you are "picking the wrong option" because of lack of context. You're outright saying "i'm out" and refusing. At most you could argue that you might not know that this is the Phantom Liberty mission, but
Ideally, there would be a path to both close the quest and then later restart it. It shouldn't be treated like other quests.
It's a bold decision.
I'll say that much.
IDK, I feel like it's fine.
"The job flashes up as failed and the player is told to leave following some more disappointed dialogue. Exploring the new Dog Town area is still possible, and players can still do all the new Gigs and other bits of side content, but Phantom Liberty's main quest will be locked away until a new game is started"
Content's still there, just the story isn't
Yeah as far as I know you can't dismiss the "enter the new zone" quest, but there are failure states to the quest once you are over
What I personally think is that every option should provide about the equal amount of content
I don't like that because it means to see all the content you must select every option
That's like, for every RPGs that has a choice system right?
I mean that is how choice works
I don't like when I go "hmm I wonder what would happen if I do this" and then the game straight up tells me "WRONG CHOICE LOL, DENIED"
Interesting detail, I went into a store in Crosscode and Emile mentioned she had upgraded her gear...

Thoughts on CS2?
It exists
Canât say the same about CS:GO.
Actually you can still play CS:GO, you just opt in to their beta. However you can no longer matchmake.
CS2 is unfortunately lacking in features. The classic Arms Race and Wingman game modes are not there with their maps.
Great reference
I started downloading cs2 and then I realized I just didn't care
It's a team based shooter, right? I hate randomly assigned teammates
It's even better because it's a reference to Fighter talking to an NPC saying the same line over and over again

like
cards on the table, i dislike Epic for a variety of reasons so the fact they would lay off nearly a thousand employees isn't surprising to me despite owning fucking Fortnite and making ALL THE MONEY
and I BET there's a 99% chance it's the fucking shareholders behind this not seeing the money number go up high enough, so they fire the grunts to try and compensate while punishing the people who made them that money in the first place... The world is cruel and unjust, man.
Epic has fortnite and unreal engine. They really shouldnt be having issues with money
This morning, rumors were flying as Epic disabled Slack for employees ahead of the news. Laid-off Epic employees will receive six months severance and health benefits. All-hands meeting happening shortly.
See, the dude who created fortnite within Epic isn't even that bad of a guy. It's the company...
and like yeah
I support Squenix which makes me a hypocrite because all AAA developers are bad
capitalism bad, etc.
But MAN, Epic is a whole other level of greed sometimes
That's a small thing that cools my jets a tad
Mostly because if they can afford that they can afford to keep the damn employees, can't they
capitalsm bad tho
He is kinda weird though
The new CEO doesn't like the way SE has been ran for the past decade so maybe things will change.
As long as they don't touch FFXIV shit's good
I don't think anyone at SE can force Yoshida to do anything with 14, the last guy tried with NFTs.
This is sadly par for the course for gaming companies...
Actually scratch that, it's pretty normal for tech companies in general.
Epic isn't an especially bad example of it, it's the average.
Which doesn't make it any less fucked
But still, good to keep it in mind, it's why I am actively surprised when someone in the industry doesn't treat their employees like disposable garbage.
I wonder if winds will change, a lot of companies trying to grow now seem to having trouble recruiting talent, because reality is, while the whole tech sector can be exploitative, the gaming industry is definitely the worst one for salaries and benefits from what I heard.
And at some point, if companies want to keep the talent necessary to churn out their huge projects they'll need people to do the job.
It's par for the course for publicly traded companies
It's somewhat unusual for a privately owned company
Epic is losing billions of dollars a year. They do not have all the money. They don't have any money.
Are they? My understandin that Epic was definitely in the black
My recollection is of being very surprised to learn that they are not at all
They for sure are losing money on individual projects, like the Epic Store is a money sink for sure
But overall I thought they were profitable
Though I can't find a source for that now.
What I can find from google, tells me that they are making less money than the previous years
But are still profitable
And yeah a bunch of articles telling me that they are losing money on the EGS which is expected
Which makes me sad because it's pretty good for the devs, and the free games are pretty good for consumers, but a side of me cheers because it's a terrible piece of software that makes me dread interacting with it every time I need to
I may have confused them with Unity, which is indeed a money fire
Though plummeting profits does still tend to lead to taking some sort of action
I feel like Epic is sitting pretty, so many new games coming out next year using their new engine that I have trouble believing they wont be making bank in 2024, but yeah.
They are spending a good amount of money on growing their store, but Fortnite and their other projects are netting them silly amounts of money
Maybe the engine revenue is less than i think tho, I don't actually have no idea how much of their profit comes from it
Also, six months of severance and health insurance? I do not actually feel terribly bad for these people.
And I do feel like Fornite is waning in popularity, it's just a feel from it being much less at the top of the internet zeitgeist
But it has to have peaked right? Not to say it isn't absurdly popular, but it was the main thing for like, a year, now it's just "one of the things that exist"
The sentiment among my friends who were hit by layoffs earlier this year was "this sucks" but shortly followed by "woo six month vacation"
If they're easily employable that's good
Tech workers.
Even among peak tech layoffs it was not all that hard to find a job.
The article doesn't seem to say who exactly Epic is laying off.
But six months generally seems like plenty
Especially as hiring is now ramping back up, at least in the broader tech world. I don't know what's going on in video games.
MORE: Epic boss Tim Sweeney says in email to staff:

870 jobs eliminated, but Epic is still hiring
fuck you
Pretty standard.
Also "we have been spending way more money than we earn" supports my earlier belief that I got from... somewhere
still fuck em
Epic is also divesting from two previous acquisitions, sources say. It is selling music site Bandcamp to the marketer Songtradr and spinning out marketing company SuperAwesome to operate independently.
What even is SuperAwesome
Bandcamp is really good and it's a shame to see it's not profitable enough to keep
Also given they basically didn't touch Bandcamp and I've never heard of Songtradr I don't know how I feel about that
Business to business music licensing platform
Yeah that's just
Gross.
Never heard of it either
I mean, it depends if they are hiring for different positions than what the layoff were for.
Laying people off while still hiring can make perfect sense if the people you lay off and the new ones you hire have unrelated skill sets.
It seems very likely they are trying to pivot something or other internally
It could also still be total bullshit for the record
(and also unlikely they are hiring 870 people)
We don't know
It is indeed also possible that they laid off people and are then hiring the same type of people because it was easier than reassigning them. That would be suboptimal.
No details are provided so
after a certain size of organization, youâre pretty much constantly hiring employees and losing employees just because thereâs so many different parts
The basic justification seems to be "our margins are now way lower because we're giving away 40% of our currently growing revenue and growth has not been what we'd hoped"
Iâd need a comparison of the fired and hiring positions to form any opinion on whether that aspect was uniquely evil
not that this affects the point that theyâre making far too much money to need mass layoffs
For now it does feel more like "uhh we are fucked" more than "haha you are fucked"
"But it's not all the money!"
This is still not clear to me
They are a private company that has had reportedly positive (but rapidly declining) gross profit
No other details appear to be known
Were required by law to give the 6 month benefits? That'd change my opinion on it a bit if it wasn't.
Still not good, but less shit for sure.
Except that that they claim to be losing money
itâs annoying that we always have to guess at even the most basic facts about these enormously influential entities
And that they keep taking billions in investments
No, the law requires zero
Even in California, which is where I assume they are based in? (like every company)
California requires you to pay out unused vacation but otherwise is also zero

figures
North Carolina is an At-Will Employment state, which means that, typically, employers are allowed to fire an employee for any reason, with or without cause. Employers are not obligated to offer a severance package.
Their revenue is moving to the Fortnite Creator Program, which is lower margin because they have to pay the aforementioned creators
Hard to imagine peak fortnite was 5-6 years ago
Most states are like that
I still feel like Unreal Engine 5 will pay handomsly in the next few years at least, so they are probably fine my guess will be.
Some states make it mandatory to have a reason to fire someone but its not that hard for a Manager to do
Like, every time a new game gets announced the "Unreal Engine 5" seems to be a major selling point for it
I was more focusing on the last sentence but yeah
Ah okay
They may well be, but I'm not sure how different that is to today

Is this a touhou game

cult classic visual novel
god i know i'm touhou obsessed but i have OTHER INTERESTS

like two but they count
I forgot a detail, actually: the WARN act. Severance is not necessary, but for mass layoffs they are required to give two months of notice. This is often handled by just giving at least two months of severance, which is technically noncompliant but since the penalty for non-compliance is to give the employee two months of severance, effectively is fine. Sometimes employees will be technically still employed but locked out for two months to strictly comply.
So six months certainly wasn't necessary but two months sort of was
Just don't start talking with red and blue
Makes sense, thanks for the information
Genryu do you know if armoured core is getting DLC?
No idea
It felt complete
But I wouldn't mind more stuff to do
It sold pretty well so I don't think it's impossible
I cant imagine why it would not
I heard that they had to nerf some bosses
It felt like a game with a very tight and focused scope, so it's perfectly possibile that no DLC were ever planned from the get go
Like sekiro đ
The first boss yes
you mean they shipped a complete product without having to carve out content for DLC ?!??!?!
