The Unity Runtime fee does not apply to our film, gambling, or education subscription plans at this time.
Maybe we'll get gacha games to admit they're gambling.
I guess on the plus side, if I ever get bitten by the gamedev itch now I no longer even have to think about which engine to use
Not a fan of the gamer response of “Use Godot lol”, Godot still isn’t as mature as Unity. Although I do expect another boost to the FOSS project.
so I haven't done any proper gamedev but I also didn't see a clear answer to this above
what kind of stuff is Godot missing that Unity has?
it isn't but my guess is that if Unity stumbles so hard that a significant number of big projects shift to it, it might mature fast.
like, I believe you, but I'd like to understand a bit more than "it does stuff"
Big IFs to be fair
If Godot isn't the answer people will switch to an engine that is.
Time for XNA to make a comeback!
One project I am already plans to switch but we haven't started yet.
Unreal probably is a legit answer to some projects
Switch and Mobile cross platform stuff, for one
ah
Unity provides a bunch of tools that Godot has still baking, terrain systems, apis, good support for multiplatform deployment, proprietary stuff that… is useful in cases…
Its a lot.
We’re talking documentations, extensions, all sorts of crazy support.
Unity has a big community so it's easier to get answers on how to do a thing.
Also lot of devs in the industry have years of experience developing in unity at this point, you can't just snap and shift that to another engine
It's gonna cost time and resources no matter what
Unity has also been the entry point for a long time.
A lot of indie games that qualify for the thresholds do have Switch or Mobile releases. Stuff like Slay the Spire, ITRTG, Cult of the Lamb
Wait doesn't Brotato have a mobile version
I think the outcome is legal teams will get involved, Unity will start walking back, but it is too late I can't see any company trusting a future project with them.
mm-hmm, indies can't depend on guessing how far it'll walk back
IDK I am skeptical that there will be an exodus.
I still think they shot themselves in the foot for no reason tho
I mean, the MLP: Maretime Bay uses Unity ffs. Unity literally just makes a lot of sense in deployment, heck Unreal is like… overkill for many things.
Unity has the advantage of running on a toaster, while Unreal requires Nasa super computers. That’s the running joke.
Like at the very least, they'll lose a few point of market share, which like, didn't have to happen at all
But don’t get me wrong, its possible to use Godot.
Just hope you don’t hit engine bugs!

Like, to give credit where credit its due, Unity is what made game development so damn accessible to so many people, and no doubt a large reason we can see game of the year contenders developed by 3 people in a garage in a country that sounds fake.
to be clear I don't think anyone is claiming that a hundred games are gonna switch to Godot overnight
Most projects won't be able to switch, the effects of this is years down the line.
lots of devs paid the sunk cost already and either can't switch or it's not worth switching even with the new fees, and Unity knows that
Unless storefronts drop all Unity games on Jan 1st.
yes the "exodus" we're expecting is a much slower thing
Yeah but current consensus is to make devs switch to Godot, instead devs are begging for Unity to fucking stop and retreat.
Its annoying.
no parting of the seas, but everyone starting a new project will be looking into whether they can use anything else, and that'll eventually add up
True, at the very least they will explore options
While maybe before, they already had experience on Unity, why even ask the question?
Honestly I want to use Godot but I don’t even know where to start, I would have to relearn A LOT. Who knows how long too lmao.
like, if I wanted to make something today, I would 100% start goofing around in Godot, and only worry about a "serious" choice if I want to finish a thing and have reached the point where Godot's limitations matter to me
but I also have zero prior Unity experience
even my C# experience is all from Izzybot
Companies aren't using Unity baseline however, it takes a lot of tools and such on top of Unity to get the engine to do what they want. If those tools get developed for Godot or other engines because that's where the wind is blowing it makes the switch easier as well.
I don’t even know how Godot handles multi platform deployment, probably well for Windows and Linux but bad for Mac and iOS because that’s a given. Also suspect GameObjects alternative.
Oh, apparently they have mobile support now
Also to be clear, people are doomsaying about the deal, while I hate it because it induces perverse incentives into the echosystem, isn't nearly as bad as it seems.
If you start making a game as a random dude and manage to sell 200k copies of it, even if it's 5 bucks each, you are probably still well in the green even paying for the installation.
Like even knowing that's a possibility, the hobbyst will still use Unity because if they get to make a game that sells 200k copies, they are probably going to be okay,
Currently, the only console Godot officially supports is Steam Deck (through the official Linux export templates). (With third party support for other consoles at cost)
Other than that, Windows, Mac OS (including ARM too), Linux, Android are all supported, with experimental browser support, and limited iOS support
iOS can run exported projects but not the editor
Yeah that makes sense.
huh, Android can run the editor? I would not have expected that
ah
Browser support is full if you use an older version of Godot
Details on console publishing: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/platform/consoles.html#doc-consoles
They’ve also deprecated something recently, I forget if it was GodotScript or idk.
I gotta check again.
VisualScript
Godot's visual scripting language, VisualScript, was introduced in Godot 3.0, almost five years ago. Despite our continuous effort, it never gained traction and the path to improve it was never clear. Godot’s visual scripting language, VisualScript, was introduced in Godot 3.0, almost five years ago. Despite our continuous effort, it never gained traction and the path to improve it was never clear. Because of this, for Godot 4.0, we decided to accept that the approach we took from the start was simply not the right one and decided to remove it from the engine. If enough volunteer interest exists, it may be moved to an extension.
That’s a shame.
Even though the visual scripting base functionality was there, Godot lacked high level components to make use of it. Engines like Unreal, Game Maker or Construct offer high level game features packaged together with the visual scripting solution. This is what makes it useful. Godot is an extremely general purpose game engine where it’s easy to make those features yourself, but they don’t come packaged out of the box. As such, VisualScript by itself was of little use.```
interesting
Turns out, even though it was a highly requested feature, only a limited amount of people ended up using it
(Self reported poll)
classic engine/library design dilemmas
Well yeah, probably because people were still learning Godot.
The two paragraphs above describe two reasons
I feel like that’s gonna bite them in the long run, Unity dead ass implemented a visual graph system not too long ago.
Yeah
As VisualScript was implemented as an optional module, the relevant code was moved to a dedicated repository so that interested users could still compile it in, if there is interested in keeping it up to date: https://github.com/godotengine/godot-visual-script
One possibility is to convert it to an official GDExtension using GodotCPP, which is very mature now and should support everything required to do this. As an extension, it may work better as a ground for experimentation and improvement. For this to happen, however, there have to be volunteers wanting to make this happen and spend the time required to research a path forward. If you are interested, get in contact with us on the #scripting channel on the Godot Contributors Chat.```
How has starting a city changes in the sequel? Lets find out!
Livestream starting
Ooo a smog system
the way visual scripting was implemented made it undesirable to use, since it wasn't an event sheet like GameMaker that is beginner-friendly, and a blueprint-like system requires a ton of premade behaviors to be useful at scale
there's also the issue that visual scripting isn't something experienced programmers really want to use, and therefore want to contribute to
GDScript was hugely improved in 4.0 (and further in 4.1 and 4.2), to the point where it became an even better option for beginners
Literally "ask the devs" thread
the near absence of hype for FF16 is interesting
Should have been PC day 1.
My selfish take is that they released it on the wrong platform.
I think so too.
Business Unit 3 built a fanbase on PC then released a Playstation exclusive title
Dumb move
It either needs to be Nintendo or PS5 and PC.
Well traditionalists hated that it had completely moved away from being turn-based and others either didn’t like the story and/or characters. It being a PS5 exclusive also didn’t help even if FF usually sells best on PlayStation platforms, though the brand since the PS5 has taken a hit in Japan…
what the hell
Playstation makes sense, since FFXIV is on playstation
But it can't be an exclusive, they cut a huge portion of their fans
yeah, talk about inevitable
They are still stuck back to when Final Fantasy was a console game, those fans were pretty much all alienated by FF13, this new fanbse is PC centric
Delayed releases don't create hype windows, by the time PC comes out people will be talking about FF7R 2.
Yeah but that likely won’t be day and date with the console release on PC either, the first 7 Remake was also Epic exclusive 🤦♂️
Also probably competing with BG3 didn't help
To be fair, FF7Remake the main problem is that it's a shit port.
I'd have bought it if it worked well
BG3 hurt it after the fact, made some of their choices worse.
Side quests in 16 are terrible.
Worse than your standard MMO fetch quest.
Performance mode in 16 was terrible, well it was in the demo I tried at least.
The performance looked fine from the streams I've seen at least
They probably used the other setting which is at least a stable 30fps
Not outstanding but not notcieably bad
Performance mode is not stable at all and could drop below 720p
Wow Norman Reedus and the Funky Fetus is coming to mobile?
Yeah Square also make tons of middling stuff like Harvestella which also aren’t selling too hot
Their mobile titles are also tanking
Harvestella is AA and did decent for what it is.
Their AA games do pretty well.
But they can't make up the money their AAA division burns.
And the past and current CEOs have hardons for blockchain garbage
Forspoken was a big problem as while that did launch with a PC version as well as on PS5 it was poorly received no matter which platform you played it on
They tried to kill FF14 with NFTs, but Yoshida blocked.
At the very least none of Square’s games have really had blockchain stuff… yet
They flopped a bunch of live services in a row
MiHoYo killed a lot of the mobile space.
Babylon's Fall being the funniest one
Yeah getting Platinum to make a live service is like getting a fisherman to fish while wearing boxing gloves to punch the fish out of the water.
Funny that Redfall and Babylon's Fall are so similar, name included.
Assholes take hostage an extremely talented game company and make them create a live service game completely out of their wheelhouse, and it flops, horribly.
At least Babylon’s Fall had the decency of dying pretty quickly
Lol Square literally keeping Tose in business with those ports and remasters
Legit that stuff makes my blood boil, Arcane and Platinum made some of my favourite games and now Arcane is essentially destroyed and Platinum is in hot waters, for like, no reason.
Arkane?
At least Platinum released Bayonetta 3 afterwards
Yes, forgot how its spelled
wait, Babylon's Fall was Platinum!?
Yes it was, hard as it is to believe
Arkane is safe because it is Microsoft.
But yeah publishers chasing trends for big money, forgetting that a) it takes YEARS to make a game and b) some studios aren't specialised in making that type of game
Then again Sol Cresta wasn’t great either and that was Platinum too
Yeah but reportedly during Redfall development a bunch of the talent from the studio left
That part is true, everyone knew Redfall was a dud.
It's anyone's guess if they are in any shape to put out a new Dishonored in the future
It might just be a dead studios now
We'll know when they make the next game
Well if they ever do, seems like they want to keep them chained to the sinking boulder that is Redfall
What concerns me about Microsoft buying these studios is they are not getting hands on and telling them “stop making this, this isn’t working” and actually helping them get their act together
Bethesda are still making the same mistakes they have done for a long time with the only real improvement is some stability and performance especially in the console release of Starfield.
Sometimes I wonder if No Man's Sky and A Real Reborn success stories made more harm than good to the industry.
Now every trash game that comes out we get a "we commit to make this unoriginal garbage the best garbage it can ever be", while they clearly aim at getting a similar redemption story and it usually doesn't end well because the title they are trying to fix has nothing worthwhile to being with.
Like the best version of Redfall is still garbage
It’s like when you see Sonic fans trying to polish up 06, like a turd is still a turd no matter how much you polish it…
Fixing Redfall requires making Redfall 2.
Fixing Redfall requires putting it out of its misery.
I don't see in this industry at current time, Redfall having any success
People made a good Refall, it was called Back 4 Blood and did okay for a minor title
Fixing Redfall requires using delete button
Redfall is more of a sunk cost fallacy thing. They released it more because it was at a minimum (bare, bare minimum) status to be released, and now they can stop putting money in it and was their hands of development time rather than wait X years more making it
At 60 bucks even the best possible version of redfall is a bad game
With all the bad press it got, it would require No Man's Sky levels of time investment to get it back up
The problem is that they announced that they will keep working on it to make it good
Which like, please no, stop, go home

Make a good game instead
It does give devs something to do while they spin up their next game.
No Man’s Sky was all Hello Games had, they needed it to turn around otherwise their small studio was sunk. AAA studios don’t have the time or usually pressure to turn a game around in that time frame

lets gooooooooo
So Hello Games had a big bag, a bunch of users that already had the game, they wanted it or not, and the ability to go radio silent without going bankrupt
Oooh hopefully the F-Zero rumours turn out to be true!
Sony also forced them to release before it was ready.
Sony did help fund the game initially though right?
They had a marketing deal too.
Not initially I think
They picked it up midway through as a publisher
Like they do, with the bag of money
Well even if it was just marketing that is probably still a sizeable amount
14 was pretty much dead before the relaunch
Not many companies have someone like Yoshida who can walk into a project with his own team.
Oh yeah, and to be fair, they didn't fuck with it too much.
Which is what SE usually does and it kills the project
They left Yoshida and the team to work on it through the years with the expansions
ARR was good, but if they didn't give it time to mature we wouldn't have reached the levels of success it had with Shadowbringers and Endwalker
And then Yoshida gained enough influence in the company to prevent big SE from messing it up.
They would have crashed the game given the opportunity.
They promised to
Sometimes I think the CEOs at Square have no idea what NFT means, they just know that everytime they say it, the shares of the company go up, like another few buzzwords, but they actually have no comprhension of what they are saying.
Pretty much
While that's all well and good that doesn't explain why 16 hasn't set the world alight as with Yoshida in charge you'd think it would've been a slam dunk, it not having a PC port is one thing but even the PS5 version has disappointing sales, maybe it feeling like it took a lot of influence from Game of Thrones didn't help as that show basically became poison after its final season... that and Square probably got more involved in 16 from the higher ups...
I didn't play it so I have no deep analysis as to what did or didn't work.
I was hyped for it and if it came to PC I would have bought it on day 1, but I don't have my finger on the pulse of Playstation gamers
It's a departure from past FF games gameplay wise but it seemed good from that front so I don't know if that matters that much.
I have no idea.
I wonder if it happened and Playstation gamers now reject RPGs if they aren't weeby as hell.
part of the reason I ask is that I've never been the sort of person who plays a JRPG game anywhere close to release, and I'm so out of these loops I wasn't even aware it was a PS exclusive
there's no deep reason why I didn't play FF16, it would've been bizarre if I did
tbh I was busy playing The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie anyway as I am much more a fan of Falcom's work than most of what Square puts out.
I wonder if it happened and Playstation gamers now reject RPGs if they aren't weeby as hell.
I was busy playing The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie
Since this one datapoint confirm my hypothesis, it's now uncontested truth.
in general RPGs are such a huge time investment (and imply aspects of gameplay design that I never enjoy) that I will only ever play one based on word of mouth long after release if it just so happens to tick several of my storytelling bias boxes, so they're never gonna be marketing/designing for me
reason i didn't get ff16 immediately: I have no ps5
For weeby JRPGs, there is no way to tell if they are any good by the marketing
They look indistinguishable
This may sound weird but I feel like people who were mostly hyped about ffxvi were ffxiv users
And half the time you have to figure out if it's Hoyoverse or an actual jrpg
Yeah of course, as I said earlier, Business Unit 3 created a fanbase of people that aren't fans of Square Enix but specifically fo Business Unit 3, and those are mostly on PC
Not exclusively, but in larger part
Trails biggest thing is that it's 10 (12 in Japan) games in and all of them are interconnected and you really need to play them all in order to gain the most from them in terms of story and characters. It is not for the faint of heart nor is it gonna be something I can recommend to everyone but if they click with you you have hundreds if not thousands of hours of content to enjoy...
I've never heard of BU3 before, what did they make before?
FFXIV
They are literally an internal studios of Square
oh
oh, ok, yoshi's team has a name
This one streamer I watch sometimes keeps getting paid to advertise some sort of JRPG
Yoshi is smart, they put the name in FFXIV trailers, they made a name for themselves from within another company
I gave it a watch once and it turned out to be some sort of Genshin crossed with Butt jiggle simulator
It's overwhelmingly empty
Yep it's the very snappy Square Enix Creative Business Unit III
meanwhile I was so unaware of this franchise it took me a minute to mentally untangle it from Tales
More mario wonder huh
Falcom does also have the Ys series which I'm not sure is that much more well known than Trails...
Ys is pretty well known and sells, but trails series is a generally larger franchise
Well Trails was an inspiration for Honkai Star Rail as Falcom's president was invited to a Q&A with miHoYo ahead of the full launch of that
I was aware of Ys, but probably only because it's a more distinctive name
I don't actually know anything about Ys, Tales, Trails or whatever else is in that whole JRPG space
I like Ys series. I have few of them in my Steam library
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is amazing, one of my favourite action RPGs and the soundtrack is absolutely top tier.
I kinda like classic ones too
Ys II has an amazing animated opening sequence created by Makoto Shinkai
I like DooM analysis videos because there's always a "this is supposed to happen every time you [x] but due to a coding oversight it never does"
It's almost always fun for gamers when the game doesn't work as developers intended
not always but a lot of times
That's why game development is such an exciting field
Doing it badly doesn't matter if you're bad in a fun way
I should probably clarify it, "when the game that works doesn't work as the developers intended"
I thought the overworking and underpaying is what made game development exciting
when the game simply doesn't work we hate it
No that's what makes it horrifying
I dunno man, Skyrim has been pretty popular

Notice how the very newest announcement is associated with a slight increase in share price
Isn't that normal for a lot of companies whenever they make new announcements, regardless of what the announcement is? Shareholders think "I gotta buy into this to show support and to show others that it's a good idea".
And over six months:

yippee !!!
Right
oh blade already posted it whoops

Ah. Would you have played any of those games?
I have Civ. Maybe would've played Neir.
As a matter of fact it was posted even before Blade
It's a news many were waiting for, it happens
Civ looks fun.

Good ol Jack F
"You've just hee'd your last ho"
Will you be watching?
I think I’ll have time tomorrow

Winter games, huh… hmm, that would be a good time to push out the Metroid Prime 2 remaster.
Maybe a switch 2 announcement?
Mayyyybe but I suspect not
They could do it but I expect that in the spring
Or around E3 time
Yeah.
maybe an announcement and then full reveal during e3 season
I actually expect they'll do what they did with Switch and just drop a random video one day on their YouTube channel showing a "first look" at the new console.
That happened in October 2016 and was released in March, so like 6 months prior to release...
That would actually track pretty well, yeah
New Xbox controller color
Astral Purple

I like purple but that advertising is awful
Time for NG+ https://i.imgur.com/Hg7dUkf.png
yeah i think this was one step too far in prepping for Shadow Yukiko, lmao
Oh well
I'm still pissed there's no romancing Yosuke option
Like even outside the fact it's Gay AF (and thus, based), you have characters constantly refer to him as "your partner"
(The P4 anime did this right but you know, that's the P4 anime, it's flawless)
Persona isn't going to let you be gay
you can date aigis as femc
and what about in the remake
what about the remake? the fact of the matter is that there is actually a lesbian romance in the series
that being said it's a shame there isn't more
oooh, you went for Unwavering Faith?
It had the best reward for my playstyle
iirc I did Bleeding Heart for mine, because the way I normally play the handicap is barely a handicap
but I've been thinking of going True Guilt for my next Blasphemous rando
I'm also going for the challenge where you do not use bile flasks on bosses
I guess I'll also be doing that next time since True Guilt means zero bile flasks ever
Doesn't it just make your bile flasks refill fervor?
well, yes, "Fervour Flasks", but that implies no direct healing
With the thorned hairs tiento that could mean more HP than normal
Tiento prevents damage but doesn't regen health
I feel like I misunderstood a word somewhere
It's more effective health if you use it to attack bosses in bursts
yeah, if you can do enough damage in one Tiento of time that it's worth the fervour cost
which with fervour regen or fervour flasks, yeah, probably
well it'll be fun to experiment with, that's the whole point
I'm speaking of this achievement
This is the challenge I'm going for
You can use flasks to heal, just not on bosses
yep that part I got
I happened to re-check my achievements list the other day and remember that's one of the ones I never tried
and then what happened in 4
or 5
or the remake of 3
or as the male protagonist of 3
Persona as a series is not very good about gay representation
I'm still not sure what to think of the whole Akechi social link
I'm not disputing that dude
removed yosuke romance
I don't think Persona as a series is really trying to do gay representation specifically so I guess I can't blame them for not prioritizing it even though I'm sure people would appreciate the option
it gets talked about more because it's one of the few video game franchises that really should be, considering half the game is building up social links with a few dozen people of all genders
^
and hardly anything else has a similar system with as much emphasis
and because P3P had some not-just-teased gayness
Persona could have same sex relations, as evidenced by what amounts to a port of the third game adding them in very casually
so each time they don't do it feels like a step backwards now
especially with the remake
but from 4 onwards they haven't had a female protagonist and iirc some of 5's writing was somewhat homophobic in tone
very fair to criticize them over not having it.
Also they should have female protag options again.
I don't remember anything homophobic in P5, but I've only seen Royal and it is a massive game so who knows what I've missed or forgotten
what I do remember was P 4 making it hilariously obvious one of the characters was gay and then later on weirdly forgetting about that almost? which I'm not even sure what to make of
(and the whole Naoto thing I won't get into)
I'm not disputing whether or not Persona should have it I'm mostly replying to the ''Persona isn't good about gay representation'' comment since it's not something Persona is really preoccupied with doing necessarily but I never disagreed that they should have the option, the more options in an rpg the better
i tried playing Persona 5 but the tutorial was so long that i got bored 😔
'tis a long game
it's weird how much I end up having to explain why I don't like RPGs and then when I do play them for the story I finish them more consistently than anyone else I talk to
Last JRPG I played I wasn't done with the tutorials until 60 hours in
I haven't tried P3P again in a long time, I played it a lot as a kid on the PSP but haven't touched it in years, I'd have to play it again to know but I don't think I'd be able to get into Persona as much as I like P3 and P4 from what very little I know about them
ok I don't think I've done one that bad
so true lol, I didn't do anything until I finished p5
when I finished the first palace I was already 10 hours in, and that's when I fully realized the scale
yeah I definitely wouldn't enjoy playing the Personas myself, though watching the story as Tale replayed them has been great
even managed to guess The Culprit when we got to that part of 4
I wouldn't be as engaged if I was watching it I feel, especially since a lot of the experience is very personal to you and the choices you make and how you wanna build up your character and who you wanna go on a date enhance your social link with
that's fun
too bad I kinda already knew who it was due to all the memes heh
But at the same time I don't think I would be able to handle the grind and the length and the time you'd need to put into playing the game especially once it starts to get hard and Persona 3 gets very hard very quickly
It's just extra grind
me: i do not enjoy rpgs
also me: im so excited for Super Mario RPG remake !
Yeah absolutely, I don't think I would have nearly had the experience I had if I just watched some other guy play it, because it's you selecting the dialogue choices and interacting with the characters, and that's a big part of the gameplay
after watching all of P3P and P4G and getting far enough into P5R to have the combat properly explained, I think I said something like "if they keep improving things at this rate I might actually want to play P6"
I'm sure there's also a lot of metas about da strongest persona in da gaem!11 and all but the personas you choose is also part of the experience
I remember that Minato's persona despite looking cool is absolute trash or that's what I remember reading back then when I looked up guides for fusions but hey if someone wanted to keep it around that's part of their experience
so it's like a pokemon situation
there is a pokemon element to the persona games, yes
The funny part is that Personas are supposedly way easier to get into than Shin Megami Tenseis
does persona have pikachu
no
I've been on the ''I should finish Persona 3'' train for a long time now, I stopped playing it pretty much at the middle point because I couldn't get past this one table boss and I just stopped playing because I was frustrated so I still have this feeling of needing to see the story through to the end
persona 5 is basically pokemon but inception
I also want to go on a date with Elizabeth because I never had the chance to in my game
she's great in fes
I still don't know the requirements to date Aegis, I never really found out so if I ever pick it back up I'll have to look into that
does it have anyone like pikachu
all I remember was that I was too stupid for Mitsuri and wasn't kewl enough for Yukari
...roulette table?
oh right Yukari requires charm
😎 badass enough for fuuka
Knowledge takes by far the longest to max out so Mitsuru was the one I remember refusing to be dated forever
particularly when she was made unavailable by plot just as we got it maxed out
that sounds about right, I remember doing nothing but going to a specific store or some place on the square or mall just to get my charm up as much as I could to date Yukari but I remember I never seemed to have gotten it
the arcade games?
Persona has Picatchu - pichu
yeah the 100% social link guide says to do the arcade games whenever you can
also study at night every night
Hecc if I know where it was I don't even remember now
I had stopped going into the online game with my online buddy to study so Mitsuri would notice me but she never did
How many books do I need to read to talk to you woman
also why are you calling her Mitsuri lol
if you study every night from the beginning of the game, then by the time her social link is open, you should be able to hang out with her
huh, Tale said the arcade games and miscellaneous quest reward stat boosts are way more effective than studying
It's that sort of stuff that irks me when I played it, I know it's not necessary or required or anything and it's probably entirely optional but the fact that the requirements are so high and hey if you missed one night of studying or going into the arcades then fuck you I guess now we have a story moment and you're locked out
is that not her name?
That's pretty close
lol
maybe, but you lose next to nothing in terms of time if you study at night, whereas you could spend the time at the arcade for other things
This is like calling Joe Biden just Biden
unless you care about the nighttime social links, sure
Mitsuri Kanroji, Mitsuru Kirijo, that's very similar
Oh wait, this is not the Japanese surname then given name format
It's the American one
no, studying at night does not take up the "night" time slot, because it's supposed to be "late night"
they give you the option whenever you go back to your room after the night, unless you went into tartarus
You could cheat
oooh that's right, Tale was staying in the Tired status on purpose early game to unlock more of the Courage boosts
look the game's complicated but she 100%'d all social links so clearly it was a viable strat whatever it was
yeah there's a 13 year old guide on gamefaqs that gives you a guide on what to do on every single day to get 100%
I'd only do it on a second run though, just blindly following it kinda ruins the experience for me
and now, fittingly, I should get back to my ~60 hour JRPG that plays like Metal Gear Rising for some reason
and I'm the kind of person that likes to complete as much as I possibly can when playing a game so I'd just follow that guide for my first (second?) playthrough regardless
and also plays like metal gear solid, and ikaruga, and metroid/castlevania for some reason
you could say that
I was gonna say Space Invaders at first but...that's a bit too retro
what the hell
I 'member when Nier had just released and I saw one or two videos about it reviewing the game briefly and how great the multiple genres and changes in perspective were, but I also seem to remember a lot of people seemed to really really hate these
It's pretty much the only thing I know about the game since I was never interested too much but I think it's really cool

Nier (Replicant) does have a problem with clunkiness in the segments with non-default perspectives, though you shouldn't be playing that for the gameplay so it's not the biggest deal
Nier Automata is much better in general at making the core gameplay loop fun even without the craziness of the story/lore/setting/cast, and that includes the shmup and sidescroll segments
of course I'm still far too early in Automata to make a fair story comparison
actually you know what the Niers remind me of
the Metal Gear Solids
strongly associated with one particularly unique creative lead
extremely memorable and quirky cast
storytelling that waffles between hilarious cheese and successful tearjerk
not the easiest thing to explain or get into
tries to be multiple genres and it doesn't always work but it's always interesting
I could go on
Unity CEO John Riccitiello was EA CEO when FIFA 09 launched with loot boxes. Last year he said devs making games without monetization in mind are “fucking idiots.” In an EA stockholder meeting he entertained the idea of charging $1 to reload an ammo clip in Battlefield.

Larian Studios is probably laughing their ass off at this man while drinking champagne as BG3 sales soar.
this guy is like the supervillain for gamers
it's like the embodiment of everything gamers hate and combined into one guy
Honestly there are worse ones
yeah probably lol
apparently there was a parody of him in Travis Strikes Again and he was the final boss
But yeah I remember that comment. I didn't know he put out an apology for it though.
I'll forever have a sore spot on Sony though for some comments they made around 2010.
imagine every time you wanted to glory kill a demon in Doom you had to pay a buck
"but imagine how much more money you could have made with mtx!"
I wish this CEO will make Unity bankrupt or something like this, to make industry understand that this won't work
except unity going down means more than half of the indie game industry also goes down
Well the fact EA welcomed him back for a second term with open arms there says everything you need to know about what AAA and their investors want
And Tarkov will go down, this will be the best victory in history of game industry
EA is a public company, so they're always going to choose the guy who will bring the most money
that's unfortunately how it is when you go public
your sole goal is to make money
Relying on one game engine for half the industry was not exactly a great business model to begin with imo. That is shifting sand if things go wrong, like they are currently.
which is why you thank the stars that valve is still private
you say that as if the industry was one collective though, devs will always go to the most popular one due to ease of use or documentation
And I imagine how fast Tarkov will change engine after Unity will do this thing about pay for every installation
changing engine means literally making the entire game over again, albeit with all your assets
I don't care, I pray every single day for closing Tarkov forever
I hate this game
I mean I don’t begrudge any studio, large or small for using something like Unity, but expecting them to not do stuff like this… especially with their current CEO and his track record was naive at best
Changing engines is an entirely nontrivial matter which would likely involve retraining or replacing the staff working on said game. It would also involve rewriting all your code.
Each engine is fairly unique in how it works and is itself a skill that takes a lot of time and energy to develop
Stig Asmussen, director of the ‘STAR WARS: JEDI’ games, has left EA.

Is he going to join Unity too?
Dang
He was doing a good job with those
"There's no royalties, no fucking around," Unity CEO John Riccitiello memorably told GamesIndustry.biz when rolling out the free Personal tier in 2015. "We're not nickel-and-diming people, and we're not charging them a royalty. When we say it's free, it's free."
yippee! 🎉
The thing with Unity pisses me off because the learning resources available for it totally eclipse everything else that’s out there. And Unity’s documentation is absolutely fantastic.
And it’s easier to use than Unreal Engine while not losing out on any capabilities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQSDsjJAics going through the announcement, some of the reactions, the Q&A and so on. Good place for most info so far in one spot
Just about the entire industry, from other engines, to developers and publishers, is outraged by this horrible development from Unity.

Having actually looked at the updated terms I feel like it’s an overreaction, but the principle of this specific model is just… they’re double-dipping aggressively on the royalties. Just do a regular royalties model.
the "overreaction" thing is hard to judge because the reactions are as much about the principle, the context, and possible future changes as they are about any specific developer's financial situation after only these immediate updates
while it probably won't bankrupt most devs, it is a huge headache to figure out what it would even cost you, probably disincentivizes many desirable practices like certain kinds of demos (and it's not even clear which ones, see previous point), there's no reason to trust Unity's proprietary install counter, it is scummy double-dipping, and with only a 3-4 month warning period it's still a massive rug pull for every developer who's already committed to the engine, and after this why would anyone trust them not to suddenly redouble the fees again next year
It's not an overreaction given the history of how Unity worked really hard in the past to fix their reputation and promise they won't change the deals they've struck retroactively.
I've been binging all of his videos...
So you are correct
also i was wrong it wasn't Tom Hall's arms they used for Doomguy it was Kevin
Bitterman is everywhere
Geoff is not amused

based take
if you lose Geoff you are truly lost
Yeah, this whole thing is basically gonna bring Unity to their knees.
Hopefully in forgiveness
Oh I thought Slay the Spire did run on Unity
do you want the actual summary?
Yes, I did heard about it a bit of it though
Until recently, Unity pricing was a relatively familiar model of (to keep things simple) "once you make X monies/sell Y copies, you owe us Z% of that". They recently announced a new payment system, which most importantly includes a per-install fee (if you aren't on one of the pro subscription plans), effective for all Unity game installations made after January 1st 2024. This is problematic for many reasons:
- How do you count installations? Unity apparently has proprietary software for this, but are hiding the details, leaving many legitimate concerns about reinstalls being double-counted, whether pirated copies count, if anything prevents them from making up BS numbers to take more money, etc.
- Since this applies to (future installs of) games that already released or started development, every moderately successful indie developer who chose Unity before this announcement suddenly has to rethink how much this fee costs them, whether they need to switch engines, and whether they can switch engines at this point (some have tweeted cost estimates, and one or two already promised to switch unless this gets reverted).
- Apparently nothing stops Unity from changing terms on short (by gamedev standards) notice, so there's now zero trust they won't make the terms worse again in the future. Thus, even devs who can easily afford the new fees announced so far are reasonably upset and considering switching future projects.
Damn, Unity is really doing this. This is truly sad for the Indie Devs, I wonder how that all of it will affect the future of game development and the choices made by those.

at the moment I have no idea
the one thing that seems clear is that the business side of Unity is 100% aware of just how bad the reactions would be, and are hoping for nothing more than a short-term cashout
(edit: removed an irrelevant and disputed claim)
Which is why even if this wasn't something that would immediately bankrupt most devs it still sets a precedent that Unity not only can but will do this type of stuff and it makes people not trust them anymore
It really only takes one decision like this to completely obliterate your reputation and goodwill with people
It's honestly pretty crazy just how quickly a lot of devs even the big ones were like ''yeah no fuck that'' and just said they're either switching engines or just taking their games down entirely

holy shit
the CEO selling stock is a red herring. Here's his list: https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/insiders/riccitiello-john-s-383806 He's been selling much larger numbers of shares over the last several years, and then getting them "indirect" (which looks like "as compensation") and selling his way back down to zero.
funny emulator bug I encountered today while playing LTK difficulty on Cradle
huh, if true he picked amazing timing to do this accounting trick
He only sold 2,000 shares worth $80,000. That's hardly anything compared to the $300 million he sold off in 2021-2022.
fair enough

oh shi wh
this has to be intentional or something
wonder what they could possibly be announcing
hmm
The return of starfox and metroid 4 reveal
bet that the chat will be all "gta 6" this and "cod" that lol
Astral chain TWO
apparently it will focus on indie and 3rd party games
livestream chat is going to overhype this to have a gta 6 announcement and then disappoint themselves, again
Geoff Keighley cries when he hears gta 6
Geoff at the game awards before the armored core announcement saying that he was "honored to have this decorated studio announce this game" at his show and then making everyone think gta 6 was actually here was the funniest thing
and then the bandai namco logo came on and they all got mad
Lol
Or when he trolled everyone w the ff7r pt 2 announcement
I'm hoping fnaf help wanted 2. They said it'd be this year and it'd be the perfect time to show more
I'm going in with low expectations, last time was a disappointment
same
So this airheaded moron is not only the dude who pretty much started loot boxes as a thing, but literally all those EA jokes made over the years that I thought was just people over exaggerating about EA's greed was because of him. People like him are what's wrong with the gaming industry and this world. There's a hot take
Nintendo Direct will begin <t:1694700000:R>
I suspect this will be the final Direct to focus entirely on the Switch.
Including a bunch of posts from devs about the situation
I agree

imagine if it's not even about any games, it's just nintendo shitting on unity for half an hour
it would be hilarious if they'd been thinking about getting into the game engine space all this time
I mean, the remake of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl was in unity
It wasn't made by nintendo but it wouldn't surprise me if they were genuinely considering using a non-in house game engine, given how it surely slows production down
I suspect their first party Switch games needed the in-house engine expertise to perform as well as they do
but for a future console who knows

why is it so big
what are your guys direct preditctions
Localization of mother 3
since i called them remaking/remastering super mario rpg last direct, this time i predict a remake/remaster of the first paper mario game lol
A remake/remaster of Paper Marios 1 & 2 would be awesome
Those games are legendary
I’m going to go out on a limb and say Metroid Prime 2 Echoes Remastered will be a thing.
And maybe something involving Donkey Kong.
twilight princess remaster for switch
WW HD and TP HD for Switch would be great to have
It always kinda pissed me off when people talked about how FFXIV wasn't money hungry, unlike WoW, and how WoW's cash shop was just the worst thing ever, all while FFXIV had basically identical monetization
I don't mind either game's cash shop because I felt like I had enough outfits in-game that I could acquire to never feel like I needed to spend real money but it was really dumb watching people pretend 1 was so much worse than the other.
Ffxiv cash shop is bad, but Wow definitely went above that many times over with the Wow token
Like, it's not even comparable
The system where you're allowed to play the videogame for another month by farming gold and then buying a month subscription in-game from someone else who paid real money for it is neat but
The people farming should be considered employees and get benefits
They're basically working for company scrip that can be redeemed for the opportunity to work more
remember Axie Infinity or whatever that NFT game was?
There's literally nothing wrong with the WoW token
It's a great idea, but there's a bunch of perverse incentives associated with it
Sub prices didn't change with the introduction of the WoW token, nothing was preventing you from paying a monthly sub to keep playing
Now if you had the gold to do so you could play the game without paying
r/outoftheloop: what's the WoW token?
You can spend gold in WoW to buy a token worth 1 month of subscription time
Step 1-
A player buys subscriptions with real money, and they come in the form of a redeemable in-game item that gives you a month of gameplay.
Step 2-
They put that token on the market, and a buyer spends in-game money to buy that token and redeem it.
Step 3-
The buyer now has an extra month of subscription, where they can farm gold to buy the next month's.
It's an allowed method of buying gold, which is there to combat third party gold sellers
Another benefit is it keeps the game world full of people, even if the subscription price is above the means for some of them
Also the token costs the same amount of real money as 1 month of playing time, which is exactly what it's worth
So Blizzard makes the same amount of money from 2 players buying 1 month as they do from 1 player buying their own month and 1 token, which another player purchases with gold

Mario vs Donkey Kong
I remember this video game
oh it's a remake of the DS game i think
The problem with it is that it puts an official dollar price on ingame currency.
The potion stops costing 1000 gold, it costs 3 dollars now, and if a person has more IRL money than you they can more easly access it.
The system is the same or Eve online, I know the pitfalls of it really well, it's why when a big battle happens in the game, media says "a ship worth 10.000$ dollars" was destroyed
It's always a fuck up when you allow people to buy currency, it always makes the game worse
How do you jump higher from a handstand than on your legs..
GBA
oh woops
This Mario game looks fun
I've never had that problem with WoW because everything is fairly easily earned with in-game gold.
The intended game progression is very obviously not paying for gold with real money to skip content.
Isn't there another prince of persia game coming out next year? or is this the same game?
