I never got the impression that Cammy is supposed to be a cute or cutesy faced character so I don't see a problem but if Capcom decided the complaints were important enough to address
I clicked the link and was like “oh crap its an AMP link” and then forgor that I had an extension which automatically removes and redirects that.
I hadn't even looked to check for that. Apologies.
Its all good, most don’t even know what AMP is.
No need for apologies lol.
https://www.polygon.com/23780172/lord-rings-gollum-daedalic-lotr-game-canceled here it is de-amped.
I like AMP
https://youtu.be/9gf2MT-IOsg game makers tooklit is such an interesting channel
I didn't realise how interesting the ai is in the sims
The Sims uses a super smart AI system to make virtual people who think, feel, and interact in a believable way. Here's how.

Enjoy! I found it a bit hard to get into at first, stopped then restarted a game months later. However, the seuel felt much better
This was really neat!

that actually makes sense to me
When ‘loading’ occurs, the code that begins to run usually call to the loading bar. Each section that has gone through increases the percentage, but eventually some computers are slower and therefore there’s the ‘biters’.
When a bite happens, its usually to tell the player “yo, I’m almost done I swear”. In reality its still loading or has actually finished loading but is giving extra seconds.
They do feel satisfying lol.
years ago i wrote a system to automate a guys job that was being done manually using spreadsheets. when he was giving the new tool he didnt trust it as it worked too fast. so i put a fake progress bar and a delay timer in place and he accepted it working better that way because it looked like it was doing something isntead of completing instantly.
sadly yes
There are other reasons to add them though.
If a game finishes loading due to the fast CPU but the slower GPU is still behind, you tend to see the pop in and low res textures after fade in.
So yeah, they’re kinda needed to hide the stuff in the bg. If you remove and try to see what is happening, you’ll see the world, npcs, items, lighting, textures, and sound pop into existence little by little. Very distracting.
personally, I'm not phased by the idea of fake loading bars
it feels like it's a problem that should be resolved differently, adding artificial delays wastes people's time ultimately
Yeah, I'm the sort of person to prefer getting as much information as possible
Out of nowhere, the full source code of Far Cry 1 just dropped on the Internet Archive https://t.co/agRMPHLT6o
in my case there was no way to convince the guy who was VERY old school that it was doing the job properly without putting in the delay. he just refused to accept that it could be done that fast
i think im gonna stream shadows over loathing in one of the quiet VCs if anyone wants to join me
You gotta explain that people need the voice party role to join
I definitely prefer the modern trend of a loading screen with some moving icon or other filler content, without any attempt at a progress tracker and all the weird little problems that brings
for the most part the game code has no control over how long it takes the underlying hardware to do things like move assets from the hard drive over to RAM or GPU memory, and doesn't receive fine-grained feedback from those processes, so there'd be little to report even if you wanted a super technical description of loading progress
I want a text indicator describing each step of the process.
i like how Doom Eternal and TotK have loading screen tips
I do like how loading screen tips are a standard thing now
which makes it sound like they're new when I think they've been around for decades but they're still good, especially in games like those two where you either need to know the core mechanics well, or there are just a lot of mechanics worth being aware of
my only complaint with the standard implementation is that the loading screen will close itself while you're still reading the tip; some games have a button prompt after the actual loading is done but that's rare IME
Well, I think more than a few people don't want multiple additional button prompts throughout their gameplays
It can get exponentially annoying, especially when the game has a lot of loading screens
Yeah, if tips are important, put them in the pause screen or in some sort of tip codex
When loading is done I'd rather start immediately.
loading screen tips are hit-and-miss for me, but they sometimes manage to be informative or funny
Sometimes your opponent is just having a really good day. –CS:GO loading hint
same, but at worst they tell me stuff I already know, so it's always better than no tips at all
Very few games provide a handy list of all the loading screen tips, but I usually seek them out in the wiki or something
true, that would be a nice touch
You know I thought this looked familiar, but the name tipped me off entirely
Will admit, did not expect to see a DBZ reference in a Touhou fangame
Reminds me more of Final Fantasy 1
Which has a corridor like that where you can fight death machines
Oh fun
Thankfully this game has full HP restores after every fight and even multiple lives if a party member is downed
Even a party wipe only kicks you to the world map and the game autosaves whenever you leave a dungeon so losing progress is barely a thing
Is...is this the RPG Maker engine?
I made that mistake, it's Unity
It looks so incredibly similar

@graceful bridge
Hm?
I might get it
Ah! Hope you enjoy if you do.
I’ve played the first one on my Xbox and it’s pretty fun. Did you play the first one much?

you know shit's getting serious when Battle Hymm of the Soul (The Persona 3 final boss theme) is playing in the background of this fight
Here's the story behind Luke's victory voice line in SF6 where he screams "LET'S GOOOOOO"
This one is for y'all FGC 🫡
💖 36471 🔁 6561
''Can he say: ''Whoo! Let's go!!!'' ?''
''....this is for when the fight is over. Where is he going?''

Can't tell if the VA director simply didn't speak english as their first language or are just incredibly out of touch that they take: ''Let's go!'' literally
I can't wait for the "I pulled a Wirtual" voice line
Why does that guy look soooooooooo f*cking HUGE next to the girl on his right?
Like, his head looks about twice the size of hers
Maybe it's just perspective, but it's weird, lol.
It's really cool seeing how many people have been falling in love with Luke because of how much love Aleks is pouring into the role and the character, if it wasn't for him then people would still hate and dislike Luke and not see him as a potential new face for SF/Main Character in the same way we all see Ryu
because he is huge, but it's also probably just the camera
Woo! Let's go! I beat a big Shade that was giving me issue in NieR Replicant!
Luke is a good boy
I need some good vibes after... things happened in NieR

but that costs money
i already have powerwash sim
Okay
Oh, Powerwash Sim is published by Square
Nothing wrong with that, it just explains the Final Fantasy VII dlc that I have, lmao
Square Enix have been acting as a publisher for many indie games
And that's cool of them to not only help publish them, but lend their IPs for some free DLC
Also Powerwash has a Spongebob DLC now but that costs money~
that and i'm just in it for the powerwashing,m the FFVII and Tomb Raider stuff is a nice and unexpected bonus
Imagine the powerwash simulator guy just scrubbing and powerwashing the room/tank where Jenova is while Cloud/Zack and Sephi are fighting in the background
I mean there was Viscera Cleanup which is like a gorier Powerwash dealing with the aftermath of some very bloody scenes
"Finally, we will be together mother...!"
"Hey, sorry, do you mind moving your feet a little? I just have to mop over here really quick 🧹 "
Which in hindsight it's crazy that we got a gory post-horror cleanup game before a calm powerwashing simulator?
Viscera Cleanup was fun
Could never run it on my crap top though
There was a weird alien carcass in one level I remember
and by the time I got a better PC, Doom Eternal came out and...
Doom Eternal is the prequel of course
That's how it all got so dirty in the first place
Honestly if Viscera came out a few years later, we could have had Doom DLC
I guess powerwash could get a Doom dlc maybe hopefully
But Viscera's cleaning was different
Noclip has found a huge stash of VHS footage of hundreds of previous events, interviews, behind the scenes, exclusive live tv footage, of gaming history.
whoa
This is like the most quality that's been released without AI upscaling, and those tapes are dying so they're trying to get them scanned fast.
Even the E3 2009 Microsoft one.
Wah-bam!
It's great that they're digitizing them

Very nice
Goddamn seeing that KOTOR exclusive demo footage is taking me back, seeing that Lucasfilm Games logo
Its like a lot of stuff was about to be thrown and was found.
Oh man, I remember watching some of this footage when I was reeeeeally young. It was so cool!
There's probably so much stuff of this caliber that was probably sitting at someone's basement/attic in a box gathering dust that either got lost or thrown out/destroyed
Every single finding like this is so insanely valuable especially with physical media on the way out completely
I'm glad whoever found this isn't being an asshole and hoarding it like so many people do when they find lost media where they take advantage of the fact only they have it and don't share it online, though I don't know if this quite classifies as lost media but my point still stands
It was found and was gonna be sent to a landfill.
Noclip then intervened once it became aware of what was inside while on a expedition.

I just feel bad about probably all the other stuff that didn't make it/nobody intervened

There is so much being thrown out because some don’t see it as valuable.
It is how it is.

It's gonna be weird seeing Persona 3 as a ''modern'' Persona game because that game gives me heavy 2000s/2010s vibes especially the memes that date all the way back
Not even that, the artstyle, all the forum discussions from years ago I've visited in the past looking for guides/tips, the early memes
but in-game of course there's also a bunch of 2000s stuff that I hope they don't swap for modern stuff
it's set in 2009, so I can't imagine they change much
Everytime a story gets remade/reinvented/reimagined it usually gets remade into a more modern time so I wouldn't be surprised

also speaking of P3 Calli is a huge P3 nerd
she loves it
it'd be weird if they did set it in modern times since the persona universe is connected with all the main games
plus, I think we see yukari hold her flip phone in a screenshot/clip
kids nowadays will never understand how fucking cool flip phones were
there was a minor comeback with fully touchscreen flip phones
but it's just not the same
flip phones? cool?
did I stutter?
Flip phones were awesome, when I was bored I would make music with the number dial and play the phone games like block breaker, snowball fight, pacman and street fighter arcade during car rides
I remember playing the shitty Assassin's Creed mobile games
apparently they're all available on smartphones now with widescreen and touch controls
so that's neat
I played that shit with the aspect ratio VERTICALLY
These old mobile games were a "I'll take whatever I can get" situation. Like any entertainment was welcome for me
There was an old sonic flip phone game, forgot what it was called
For me it was ''I don't have a computer strong enough to play the real thing so this is gonna have to do''
even when I had a computer, I still couldn't even play AC1 at the time, so I had to settle for emulators and play stuff like AC2 Discovery
but I was happy, it was all I needed
Everyone really had to scavenge to play games back then, kind of miss those days of discovering old flash games or emulating something for the first time, but its way better off now
Does anyone remember the asscreed brotherhood facebook game that synced with the real game and you could train assassins and stuff?
I do appreciate and think it's great how accessible stuff is nowadays but there was something special about that era of games with those kind of mobile games and web based games and all that
I remember having to download the games and find a cable to connect the phone to my computer to put music and games in it
yeah, AC Project Legacy
only lasted a couple years, unfortunately after a while all FB games were kind of gone, I remember playing a shit ton of Dragon City and this parkour game called Vector
shit was addicting
what about Doom RPG
Doom RPG is a mobile phone game developed by Fountainhead Entertainment and published by JAMDAT Mobile. It combines the Doom first-person shooter franchise with role-playing video game elements. The storyline incorporates many similar events of Doom 3, but involves different characters than those in the third game.
The website for Doom RPG state...
Never heard of it, but in my country we had these computers that were given to all students called 'XO/Ceibalita', I think nowadays they were changed for some regular looking laptops which I understand but is a bit more boring, but in it, funnily enough, Doom was one of the default apps
So as kids we used to play a shit ton of Doom in school
based
I hate how much I sound like an old man despite not being old at all but I can't help but feel that way lol
these darn kids nowadays with their fancy hacks back n' my day we had to write down cheat codes on paper and ask a friend from school to borrow their PS2 game

Exchanging tazos at the school playground, playing and betting with our football cards and marbles
they stand upon shoulders of giants
I still own my cheatcode books, I remember being bummed out when I didnt find a game I was looking for and started doing backflips in my mind if I found the game I was looking for
Remember the videos about how the PSP 2, PS4 and Xbox 720 were going to be like
🚨UPDATE: It's been a long time since I made this video 😊 I now work on the Fortnite team at Epic Games! Funny how things turn out! Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EpicGhosty 👻
cool pictures i found plz subscribe or comment
I actually believed in the xbox 720
we all did
The music for that video screams 2008 youtube
back when a transparent SPHERICAL!!!! console was something we all saw as futuristic and cutting edge
it literally is a 2008 video
nowadays it seems ironic and like a shitpost but that's a time capsule right there
Oh my, imagine how uncomfortable this controller would be
Seriously, when are Sony and Microsoft gonna step up their game and get anywhere close to the greatness of the Gamesphere?!
wait until you see the last nightmare of a controller
You know what
At least you would have a valid reason why you lost in a game so thats pretty futuristic thinking
Wait how did I not notice the trigger buttons
Nvm I hate it
pretty sure it's meant to be a joke image but still
We laugh at how 1800s-1900s people envisioned the future but we did the exact same thing not a little over a decade ago
this fucking thing lmao
2000s futurism is insane, everything is either white or gray, smooth as possible and, most times, transparent because it was the trend at the time
everything had to be glossy and smooth
i miss transparent stuff
Spherical is the future way
bring back the aero aesthetic goddamit!
It's so much more charming than minimalistic stuff
It is neat.

Ooooo dang
everything is boxes now, plain solid color boxes
Firefox got hit with simplicity pretty hard
The old apple icons are nostalgic
pretty sure I remember the apple iphones made it a point to use skeuomorphism as much as possible and if I'm not misremembering it was shortly after Steve Jobs' passing that they started going more minimalist and started making them bigger phones
maybe it's nostalgia but that aero aesthetic just makes you feel good looking at it
Yeh I think what old icons were supposed to resemble buttons
Just look at the app icons on your phone rn and compare it to the ones in that aerospace picture, unless you have custom widgets
Yeah, skeuomorphism was used as a way to portray how things looked like in the real world so things like your desktop windows had depth to them and buttons too
the designs also were a lot more elaborate, nowadays stuff is a lot more plain and as minimalist as possible while trying to stay as recognizable as possible too
I don't think it's bad in itself, but it does get boring when every website becomes practically the exact same and it all just looks identical
How did people talk about controllers and not bring this peak controller
Looks like a controller if xbox and playstation shook hands and became buddies
It isn't just icons for computers and phones that went for the more plain route, I see a lot of brands doing it too with their logos
it's really interesting how quickly controllers were pretty much nailed format and design wise, there were some variations, but ultimately dualshock format remained king
the only controller that I can think of that changed the design significantly and had actual improvements and not just changes for the sake of it was the Steam Controller which unfortunately isn't produced anymore
I honestly liked the xbox 360/gamecube controller layout more than the dualshock
Yeah, but we were talking about that specifically so I just mentioned that, minimalism is the trend now for everything
Yeah, Nintendo and Xbox still do the asymmetrical sticks.
I do not like it here or there, I do not like it anywhere
who thought that ios 7 and windows 8 would influence everyone's design philosophy to this day
Now that you say that I cant think of any specific examples of where I like minimalism but I will run into a strong example eventually
The true Minimalism
I remember really liking minimalist UI design back around like 2013 when minimalism was starting to become the trend, but in recent times I very quickly grew out of it simply because all games look the same and rarely do I see wacky unique UIs like back in the 2000s
Like, even Zelda has a very minimalistic UI now and I don't hate it but I do think it's boring
Granted I like TOTK's more than BOTW's but still
knowwhatimean?
Kingdom hearts had a really unique ui, I loved the hp bar for you and your allies HP
Absolutely
Games recently try to use the most basic text font they can find
Stalker also had a super cool UI
Witcher 1's was minimalist, but it wasn't minimalist
The borders around the ui in that game really help set the environment and setting tbh, I think for all games in general too
Yeah, all UIs in games from these times were uniquely themed
it made the UI feel like an extension of the game
after like 2015 most UIs feel interchangeable
In dead space the rig as the HP bar was unique as well
As long as the ui isnt too extreme and distracting, I think all games should try to become more creative and have more fun ways to make their UI special and memorable
Helps with immersion
Yeah, that's definitely one of the most unique formats for an immersive in-world UI to this day
And speaking of, reminds me of RE4's UI
Don't wanna bring down RE4R because I love it all around, but that UI from the original... the sound effects...
I remember using this controller way back when:
What is that for
No more Leon standing at the side of the screen, sad day
I was too young to remember, one of the preNES systems.
easily the worst change
no more Leon menacingly bouncing an egg on his hand
gotta aim it at the ganados' eyes to blind them with the thick yolk
and maybe throw a couple at ashley's head for fun
Hold on is that an egg icon for the ammunition as well
If remake removed that, me and the remake are no longer friends
Leon annoys Ashley and Merchant by throwing eggs at their face! Maybe we will get a different reaction if we throw a Golden Egg?

the icon is there but it's not cracked
That gets a pass for me, but this proves the eggs in the original have more power
Finally found it, it's the Intellivision
That looks like such a small cord.
many early consoles at that time had small cords, as if they were meant to be sat right next to the couch on the floor or on your lap
it was truly the wild west of consoles at the time
the abundance probably contributed to the video game crash too, allowing nintendo to shape the modern video game industry we know today
That and the bad games.
too many consoles, and too many games of similar poor quality
games getting more minimal HUD has been a trend for a looong time, and I like it this way
games used to have thicc HUDs status bars so they could render a smaller 3D viewport, and therefore improve performance
I like how FF16 UI looks.
I tend to prefer when games center HUD elements too, so that the HUD positioning doesn't become inconvenient on ultrawide aspect ratios
(CS2 did this, I saw nobody mention this change but it's great)
I know few people play CS in ultrawide, but I do 🙂 It's saved my ass more than once
Is it bad I see the CS acronym as a Falcom fan and immediately think of (Trails of) Cold Steel rather than Counter-Strike...
@slim thorn How far from the ending is the ||Lucrehulk|| in Jedi Survivor? Just entered it. Figured I'd finish the story so i can get some disk space freed up
hm
I wanna say halfway to 2/3rds? you've got a ways to go yet

Yeah that too
Anyway I just beat the final level of the Simulated Universe in Honkai: Star Rail... the final fight took me almost an hour...
The whole level took about 2 hours
I actually have footage of me beating it too
Speaking of UI, not sure I have seen better UI than what Atlus is doing, Persona 5 and that new game they showed off recently especially

Crazy amount of effort seems to have gone into this.
That is an incredibly high effort video wow
This is already the best train simulator I have ever played
Went straight on realistic mode and it is great
Love how moving controls actually feels great. And controls actually feel very responsive, I remember in every other train simulator it was like, very vague and heavy feeling controls no matter what
Oh god oh fuck I'm standing on the roof as I barrel down the tracks
That moment when you train goes too fast for you to be able to run and catch up to it
Too heavy, get rid of them
Who knew trains could do off roading
Oh fuck it's on fire
LES GO
Fuck this gets really hardcore in doing all the nitty gritty stuff
It is interesting compared this sim to others. This is like, ultra realism but seemingly not too big of a map and not too many options to drive, at least from what I see so far.
But then all the other ones go for the amount of content
Fuckin make sure you check every single carriage's hand brake to see which one is one
Fuck, had to stop on a hill to let things cool down
Fuck me I'm still not up this hill
I shall abandon the save file, cause I don't really feel like trying to go all the way back and cancelling the job if I can

Sweeet (if true)
Why would Microsoft make such a guess about their rivals?
Market research
And this is probably info that is revealed from the various information lawyers were getting for the whole thing of buying activision

It was also private data that became public because of the FTC. A lot of things were leaked out.

God my NieR obsession is killing me inside.
They announced a collab with Nikke back in April and ever since getting hooked on the series I've been anticipating more news
and it's not like they'd have a problem getting Kira Buckland, they already her in the game
JUST ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY
(Kira Buckland voiced 2B in Automata)
Two
Two rings?!
And a partridge in a pear treeee
Yeah that makes sense
I got it by spending some murmuring obols and getting lucky with the drop
I also just started Diablo IV
So im only level 24
At that level I'd say just focus on XP rather than spending obols. Also find any lilith altar that you can. Getting to a certain point to unlock the right synergy of skills is the biggest power boost you'll get, other than weapons
Alright I'll keep that in mind

Ive just been doing my own thing so far
Xbox, well, specifically, Microsoft, has been going up against the FTC for a while now.
And finally, we’ve got a trial.
Some things were said, and I’m gonna talk about some of those things.
Not all of them.
But a few.
Sony and PlayStation seem kinda angry, but not that angry.

Pretty good insight
jeez lol
PUBG is still a thing?
surprisingly yeah
granted theyre pretty much only staying somewhat relevant due to the collabs theyve been doing
the console version is completely dead though
So weird
It feels like they are desperately chasing the way fortnite does its thing, but not having good collabs was never PUBG problem
In fact, it having collabs at all clashes very weirdly with the game presentation.
Their problem is that they were bad at responding to feedback, and at like...developing the game post launch
its funny too cause this is like the 2nd or 3rd time theyve directly copied a collab that fort had done already
all the way down to the skins and items/etc
one of the other ones being spiderman no way home
My assumption is more that they got some companies just showing up with a bag full of cash and they can't really shot that down really
Like, if I had to guess who started to explore the collab between the PUBG people or the Dragonball people, I would assume it's the dragonball people
probably
I mean...it kinda works with fortnite because it's this weird world where anything goes and it doesn't really matter, but I sure hope we aren't getting to a world where these collabs are going to be common
the only thing the pubg collab has over the fort one is Frieza
the other 4 skins are ones fort already had done
Piccolo, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan
so now its in like this weird spot, where if fort adds Frieza, people will end up being like "hurr hurr fortnite copied pubg" and shit lol
Is this only for the mobile version?
if that's the case it's probably more acceptable there
yeah the whole pubg collab is mobile only
like all their other collabs
Younger userbase, probably wont care as much for thematic consistency
I can't think of anything more jarring to be playing pubg, aiming down the scope and shooting Goku in the head, but on mobile it's probably more "whatever goes"
also with the whole collab thing, it seems like its becoming like the standard for a lot of games now
like brawlhalla added master chief recently
Brawlhalla it's also fine
Because it's a smash clone
And smash was ever a multiuniverse thing
tbf it was pretty jarring when fort first did it with naruto, and then dragon ball a bit after lol
At least Fortnite is cartoony
Pubg has this very utilitarian eastern europe realistic look to anything
like the first time i had saw goku shoot a xenomorph with a shotgun and proceed to gangnam style on it with nike shoes boxes on his back i was like "wtf" lol
so this is what the kids are into
Just cramming random shit into your game doesn't make it good
I'll stick to my obscure experimental indie games no one's ever heard of
i just find it fuckin hilarious tbf lol
I think it's nice that it has become this cross-media smash bros
I have zero interest in playing it
But like, it's interesting that it exists
yeah
i would have loved to have a game like it growing up
kids these days are super lucky it exists
just being able to make the most cursed shit ever with all your favorite fictional characters and celebrities
IDK if I would, I was kinda hipstery as a kid so popular media never had much appeal to me, I had to go back and catch up to what was considered good after the fact
god i hope for a mlp g4 anniversary or something they add the mane six as pets that sit on your back in a chair or something lmao
especially with there now being multiple hasbro IPs in the game already
For the stuff I liked I didn't avoid crossovers tho, Dissidia is a terrible game but man I played it A LOT mostly because it was a Final Fantasy crossover
I don't think I had any real opinion on "crossovers" back then
it's no secret that Kingdom Hearts was formative for me
Dissidia was a bit later tho, I wasn't a kid anymore, but yeah I would have played that one even as a kid
being able to just run around with rainbow dash on your back as megatron or bumblebee would be like super peak cursed lmao
oh yeah
the tony hawk games were like super big on the crossover thing back in the day
it did for thethrough KH or things like gmod for the last 17 years, there really is no benefit i
to the player if its official
for a lot of people, it being official makes it much more better
also cutesier crossovers would be fun, but id like a more relevant (active? i dont know what word im looking for) thing than g4, inagine like hello kitty just vibin on you back
other than "this was allowed???" why?
what a cute emoji
with it being official its like "wow i never thought id see this in my lifetime at all"
like imagine being told in the future there'd be a game that is playable between all the big consoles, that has both master chief and kratos together in it
same with marvel and dc being in the game together
companies slowly breaking down the "walled gardens" and actually letting their stuff be together with competing companies with no restrictions is super cool
hell, they even got one of their main competitors to say yes to a collab
EA with Isaac Clarke
To be fair, Gmod has a different barrier for entry and offers different problems
First of all let's be honest, to make maps on Gmod you need to learn A LOT
As for the problems, I've been in Gmod servers, now Fortnite chats aren't the best but I'd rather a kid is in one of those than in some of the wild west shitshows on Gmod I've been in
but its not, its a form of advertising, nothing fortnite competes with is in its pond, and we've had plenty of things like sonic and mario crossovers, KH heck even ape escape metal gear ones
Yeah but we never had one quite so successful that concentrated so many different interests. and it was so polished.
The fact that it doesn't interest me doesn't change that
and ye, i do agree with that gen, but that existed for most none console things of that era
Fair
yeah that as well
its done to such a high degree of polishedness, and a vast array of different characters and shit
across so many different interests and forms of media
music artists, internet celebs, comic characters, book characters, gaming characters, movie characters, brands, etc
I think there is some value in that, and I may say that because my cousin kids were at that age in which they got into fortnite and I saw how much value they were getting out of that.
it's not perfect, it has a lot of fair criticism you can levy at it, on the monetisation side.
Being better than other live services don't make it good from that aspect, but it also has some positives to it.
like you can pretty much fill almost three full 100 player lobbies with only characters from other stuff
There are pro and cons from that too to be fair
For everything you take from other universes, you sacrifice pieces of your own originality and I think that Fortnite gave up a lot on that front
Luckily, Fortnite original content is generic as shit so not much of value was lost
well yeah that was epic's original thing to begin with
slowly shifting towards the all encompassing multiverse thing
from the start it was obvious that was the direction they were going with it
I do think they lucked into it
I don't think it was the plan from the start at all
they didnt want it to be specifically a place for their own original stuff only
they pretty much wanted it to be the place where everything exists together
They had a failed game, they converted in a copy of Pubg, admittedly with appealing artstyle, and lucked into the level of success that allowed them to get a lot of corssover deals and make it what it is now
They were good at seeing the chance and seizing it for sure tho
even before fort they wanted a bit of a multiverse type thing
fort just ended up being the perfect world to do it in
Tim and donald had been talking about for like years prior as well
Someone was very good at seeing the path to success
Ehh, I'd have to see it to believe it
For now big X for doubt on that one
lemme find the tweet real quick
Is the tweet dated from before Fortnite release or it's them saying "we always wanted this?" after the fact
from like 2016
Okay fair
tim has a lot of tweets talking about it over the years after that as well

Rashid looks so cool
Huge glow-up over 5
To be clear tho, it was still basically an accident
None can plan to make Fortnite, I know because the people that made it were making another game instead and it flopped so hard they had to retool it completely on a whim
It was a longshot from the start, which was ultimately made into as big as a game as it is now by luck, agile development and no doubt a big amount of smart decisions
i guess
also. found one of the tweets
separate tweet but is also referring to the original unreal game
Him just throwing out the term metaverse like it fucking means anything special to anyone who would be a fan of UNREAL lmao
thats the funny part
this was long before all these other companies started using the word and it became a buzzword lol
Yeah to be fair, worth remembering that in 2016 it didn't have the same kind of meaning it has today
I think even some of the Mojang devs were using the term "metaverse" before ol' Zuckhini grabbed it and ran with it off a cliff.
Yeah it was a concept that existed, and it was explored in sci-fi books

Bug Fables is kicking my assssss
Meanwhile Minecraft updates take an eternity and people are resorting to mods in ‘fixing the game’.
I'm actually thinking of buying this game
I think Minecraft's update record is pretty decent to be fair, it's also a more complex game with a larger community (and therefore a larger potential to break players' workflows)
Sure, it is complex. But they can’t stop pumping those dlc items for Bedrock edition for sure.

that's a different team
At least the newest update does improve some things.
yeah, having to maintain the same game twice is a big burden, especially when both have very different playerbases
this is kind of like the PS1/PS2 cross-gen era where some games were effectively developed once for each platform with no code in common
...but in this case, you also have to provide updates
Well for Minecraft its different, the game has literally two engines being supported. Bedrock for all platforms that aren’t PCs, and Java Edition … the one I’m sure will die one day whenever we want it or not.
Also Java Edition needs some serious work, like there’s stuff missing from Bedrock that would benefit Java Edition.
And then there’s stuff that it wouldn’t :v
I think 1.20 has started to close the gap? But yes, there's a long way to go
all i want in Bedrock is left trigger for shield
i realise it's bound to crouch because it has to work on mobile but regardless
i cannot speak higher of terrarias quality. its a truly incredible game, and cheap as chips.
i definitly got my £10's worth of entertainment when i bought the game like 10 years ago
Its scary that Terraria still uses the deprecated XNA.
I prefer to buy on GOG
the what?
XNA and similar still have a following among high-profile indies
Microsoft’s Proprietary Indie Code Format
Microsoft XNA (a recursive acronym for XNA's not acronymed) is a freeware set of tools with a managed runtime environment that Microsoft developed to facilitate video game development. XNA is based on .NET Framework, with versions that run on Windows and Xbox 360. XNA Game Studio can help develop XNA games. The XNA toolset was announced on March...
Its freeware now because it has been discontinued.
it's a low-level framework compared to Unity, but many devs still prefer this approach
it certainly put LWJGL on the map for sure
LWJGL?
the framework Minecraft uses to handle input and rendering
Oh
it's even lower-level than XNA actually
I was able to understand XNA better than any framework and I'm not sure why.
Miss that time when I managed to put together a tiny 3D rendering and camera demo in XNA with little reference to go by.
I tried installing XNA to learn and eventually make a game.
I couldn’t even figure out the set up process.
So yeah, that’s impressive.
at least back when I paid more attention to Minecraft, some of the mods that "fixed" it, especially in a performance sense, were assuming significantly more powerful base hardware than Mojang wanted to assume
(which is fair for mods you have to hunt down and install yourself on PC, but it means they don't necessarily reflect a failure on the devs' part)
I do hope the one modder for Minecraft who is making the game run on Vulkan is able to create a middle layer for mods.
Because god I hate OpenGL so much.

it was good once, but times have changed
All the APIs and libraries for building an engine from scratch are all terrible
It's a frustratingly inaccessible thing for a relative beginner
IME most of the places where "engines" or "frameworks" get super popular are ones where the layer below is very painful to work with
like how web development (and Electron native apps) is orders of magnitude easier to deal with than porting to any OS's native stuff
These days it's just "just use Unity or Unreal or Godot" but I feel like that potentially obfuscates too much detail
I haven't used them myself, but the bits I've seen make it look like they offer most of what I'd want anyway
there is such a mod, still in experimental stage. That said, Sodium is pretty good even though it's still on OpenGL
it is possible to make very well-optimized OpenGL renderers, just like Direct3D 11. Ironwail is probably the best example I can think of
Sodium is deprecating macOS lmao.
yeah, that's the downside when you start relying on OpenGL functionality past 4.1
I’ve never had a single good experience with OpenGL to be quite frank with you.
NVIDIA’s old gpus ran opengl apps but tended to crash for some reason, AMD’s GCN cards hated OpenGL with passion mainly because their drivers were terrible, and now this.
Honestly, I think its simply time to stop using that thing.
if someone makes an independent OpenGL-via-Metal translation layer for modern OpenGL, it may eventually be good to use on macOS again
it happened with Vulkan with Zink after all
Because translating has become the solution…
Egh, sure I guess it could work… but its more technical debt.
More stuff to worry about.
But I get it, new APIs equate the same thing. New thing to learn, new tool to worry about.
I just wish there was a better solution instead of DirectX or Metal. If Microsoft and Apple could stop screwing around then maybe the situation with graphics wouldn’t be like it is now.
if you want not to worry about support, the best move is to stick to legacy tech… that means OpenGL ES 3.0, 2.0 (preferably) or even software rendering
11 year old API, 16 year old API, your own API – pick your poison 🙂
Sure you could stick with it, but eventually things will change. Whenever we like it or not.
software rendering is the thing that'll never break, no matter what hardware ends up doing
https://www.moddb.com/engines/retroquad is built around this concept, for instance
yeah, the biggest problem with OpenGL is that it's not consistently supported on all platforms despite being the oldest serious contender
so even if you want to use it, you can't only use it (for a serious commercial release that wants wide platform support, I mean, not a hobby project)
and once you're writing multiple backends it's likely just easier to use one of the standard engines
I mean, I assume Godot and Unity and Unreal have multiple rendering backends?
Open GL ES 2.0 is surprisingly universal, it still works on macOS and iOS thanks to Apple providing its own Metal layer (which is automatically used)
yeah, they all do. Godot tends to favor Vulkan or OpenGL while Unity/Unreal favor Direct3D on platforms that support it
cool
that's the tiny mobile subset though, right? it's been ages since I looked into any of this but I thought ES was missing some "basic" stuff
it is, definitely, especially ES 2.0 (ES 3.0 isn't too limiting in comparison)
it's like sand: it's coarse, it's rough, but it works everywhere
right, that's the kind of thing I mean, the "good" version is the one not supported everywhere, making it likely no better than using one of the more modern backends
OpenGL ES 2.0 on its own isn't enough to emulate OpenGL 1.x, for instance. (It can be done mostly but some features will be missing)
pretty much, OpenGL 4.2+ has a lot of nifty features but the lack of Apple support has killed that API outside of professional and AAA use cases (well, the one AAA use case, Doom 2016)
even professional use cases are starting to look increasingly at Vulkan, it even has its own safety-critical subset like OpenGL does (Vulkan SC)
so did Apple choose Vulkan over OpenGL, or how does this "support" work?
Apple made their own API called Metal, completely ignoring Vulkan in the process (which to be fair didn't exist when Metal was first unveiled)
oooh right that's what Metal is
to this day, Apple platforms don't support Vulkan, so you have to use a translation layer called MoltenVK to run Vulkan over Metal
this works well overall, but it has a performance overhead and some features are missing
ok so literally everyone who wants to support Macs has to use a special Mac-only backend
yeah
or an ancient OpenGL version
Apple has a long history of not playing ball when it comes to graphics APIs, also on the web 😦
gee I wonder why no one takes Macs seriously for video games
Linux ended up surpassing macOS for gaming by far, which is funny because it was the opposite 12-13 years ago
so iiuc... that's probably mostly because Linux converged with Windows on the game-relevant stuff while Mac almost actively diverged more than it was before?
pretty much
ok yeah this explains a lot
I find it's a lose-lose situation, the Apple hardware can do very nice things when it's well-exploited (and with great power efficiency)
but Apple really isn't making it easy for developers (big or small) to target their platforms, for a whole lot of reasons
so how good is the Vulkan to Metal translation; are they both philosophically similar enough that most stuff is just there under a different name?
there are a lot of differences with how the APIs work, I think Vulkan and Direct3D are closer to each other in comparison (though I haven't used them extensively, nor Metal)
I will need to properly learn Vulkan one day 🙂
maybe this summer if I find time
indeed, I've never considered Macs as a genuine option for my personal or work machines because I'd have to replace soooo many programs and refuse to play soooo many games that Windows and WSL Linux can handle
it feels like it'd be tantamount to relearning how to computer from square one, which nobody wants to do
the best options for Mac gaming right now are emulation, source ports (https://macsourceports.com/) and the newly released Game Porting Toolkit for select modern games. CrossOver or Parallels can work nicely for older games, but both are paid. If you want a free option, use Wineskin Winery which uses CrossOver's source code to provide similar functionality
the Game Porting Toolkit wasn't designed to be used by end users though, so Apple may pull the plug at any time. It feels a bit like sideloading on Xbox consoles 😛
yep, and when the most intense thing I ever do with my personal laptop is play video games, all of those "unnecessary extra steps" are just nails in the coffin of ever considering a mac
Ixrec: And here I thought (jedi survivor spoilers, BE WARNED) ||Dagan and getting the compass would be the end of it

I am just getting off ||the ISB base||, but yeah I didn't expect, well, ||that. Well not true I did kinda expect something from Bode like this but not all the details, not at all||
After you beat a boss in normal mode you will get an opportunity to try it in hard mode later.
Fucking hell that last fight is a pain. I just gave up and went to story mode after like 5-6 tries. (been on jedi knight the entire rest of game)
I think I needed 3 tries but I still feel like I cheesed parts of it
I would've appreciated it doing a little less damage; it's hard to learn when you die in at most 3 hits
That and the seemingly completely unavoidable attack ||the little grenade thing he puts on you||
hmm
it's been long enough that all I can remember clearly is being very skittish that whole fight, running away and dodging almost constantly except at the few specific times I was sure it'd be safe to attack (and even then half of those times I used just to recover stamina so I could survive the next block and dodge gauntlet)
I dunno if it was my style but in the latter half of the fight he just got increasingly annoying and I was having a hard time getting through his armor bar to actually do any damage before he launched into all his attacks and wrecked me
you mean stamina bar?
...oh, now I remember, for me it was more effective to not even try to break his guard because he was so tough and so fast, but if you dodge everything he has these wide openings where he's not blocking at all and you can easily deal some direct damage
Yeah I think the info panel was saying something about that after ||he shoots the blaster or something|| but I still found it too much. Ah well, finished regardless
Oh that's what I made my RPG in
||If it was then the story would've been pretty short||
I hope one of you is playing Dark Souls as "Merlinda" and just took down Manus, because that was a brutal stretch
Yeah okay buddy https://i.imgur.com/p3oRuwR.png
Not really? This added maybe an hour or two of gameplay extra at most
idk, feels like ||if after finally beating dagan and then they live happily ever after in Tanalor is just,||that's it? well that was going well
that's a different issue from "short", but I agree the JS story is much better with that last arc than it would've been without it

Yes and best limited to this discussion.
Playing Factorio helped me develop the framework necessary to solve the stupid ice sliding block puzzles
Turns out thinking things backwards from a known ideal solution minimizes the search space
sliding block puzzles are great
for me part of the fun of puzzle games is trying to not just solve the immediate problem but get a feel for the space of possible solutions and what's most efficient for any specific arrangement, and this sort of slide puzzle almost requires you to think a little bit at that level or you'll waste a lot of moves not even getting close
funny, the first character I unlock in Peglin is the new one they added today, lol
Peglin is fun
Having recently finished the game, yes.
Yep.
Listen he's pretty not smart
lightsabers in general are very underpowered in those games
and they'd be nowhere near as fun if they were as OP as they should be lol
I hear you, but counterpoint:

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast - "Dismemberment" cheat
There's a dismemberment mod for Jedi Survivor
I don't think the modder released it, but it worked quite well
But yeah, Jedi Knight II did it pretty well with that cheat enabled.
Still had health and stuff but you did get that satisfying slice once health reached zero
I think that's the reasonable way to do it
Doesn't matter it doesn't quite make sense, but it's a tradeoff for gameplay
(The real reason why Star Wars games don't actually do this though is because they're worried about being deemed too violent)
So they just wanna lie to themselves
I mean you're still beating people up with a glowing hot stick regardless
remember in Star Wars when Obi Wan chops off the walrus man's arm and there's blood
but then i guess George thought that was too much so then lightsabers cauterised the wound
which is fair
It's now technically considered a blooper. It was later decided that lightsabers were hot enough to instantly cauterize the wound, so blood doesn't happen
seeing Luke's hand gushing blood in Empire would have been extremely traumatic to 9 year old cap
Heh
It didn't register to me at all as like... a five year old
"Cool space thing!"
It's a "sneaking mission". /s
usually it's the parents/adults who are way more worried than the kids lol
a dismemberment mod seems redundant for JFO/JS considering those games already often show enemies being cut into multiple pieces when they lose their final health point
Yes. This is extremely true.
I remember people complaining about Burton's Batman because it was too violent and dark for children but I'm 90% sure children of the time were like ''YOOOOOOOOOO BATMAN''
but to be fair he does blow up a dude in that movie....
Yeah, the mod takes it to an extreme
You can fully cut people's bodies in half
seems like a weird thing to go out of one's way to add but okay
lol the way to do it in Jedi Knight is even more out of the way
you can do it without mods but it requires a bit of tweaking around on text files and adding some commands
helpusobi 1
Metal gear solid rising. Remember what they took from us.
Weirdly this is a case where I'm fine/it was the better option to let the game change course
Having a game set before MGS4 would've been fine to not 'mess' up with the games having ended but it limited the team more than it helped and Kojima's team didn't really know how to do the whole stylish action thing very well, the entire thing was actually shelved for a while too until they found Platinum and they handled the gameplay
It's interesting to see how advanced the early trailer looks though, it even kind of looks like MGSV a little bit, but I don't think the Fox Engine existed at the time
see i love MGR and and it being pretty seperate from the rest of the games in terms of story is totally fine but it was otherwise a great game
https://youtu.be/AtM3PGyiQUc
As good as the game looked, Kojima's team wouldn't have been able to ever replicate the action gameplay they wanted
First footage of Kojima's brutal action spin-off.
it's not even that 'separate', people say it's not canon but never really give a valid source for that other than a vague ''Kojima said it one time''
It's a great MGS game that fits perfectly in the timeline precisely because it's an entirely new thing
oh i thought you were kinda against the game
probably should have read it better but yeah it totally deserves to be treated as canon
I've never been against Rising, even back in 2013, I always loved the game and it was one of the few I actually completed because I didn't have access to MGS2-3-4
were you as "wait what the fuck" as i was when armstrong nanomachine'd up
i saw that and was like "wait this is about to get really weird"
I literally laughed out loud when he said "nanomachines, son". They were already such a meme after 4
So it was really silly but I was all about it
They were already kind of a meme in MGS1 even but MGS4 really pushed it
I honestly can't even remember, when you play MGS you already see so much insane shit by the point you reach Rising that nothing really phazes you anymore
raiden throwing a building over his head, swordfighting with it, and then getting manhandled by politician hulk is pretty weird even for MGS4
that said, that scene was pretty wild
we will never get stuff like this from kojima anymore 😔
Funnily enough not the first time Raiden swordfights a politician on top of a giant robot
the asswhooping Armstrong gave out made it so much more memorable
true
I still feel like Raiden getting turned into a cyborg is easily one of the worst things to happen to a character in these games and I still feel like it's a shitty thing to do to his character, MGS2 already kinda clowns on Raiden by showing him being the rookie guy getting puppeteered around but MGS4 just destroys him
Been obsessed with fear and hunger lately, highly recommend checking it out

UPDATE- I had to remove sections of this video after upload. Check content warnings before playing. Hello. I shall now talk about the Rpg Maker game Fear and Hunger, as well as difficulty in video games. And I don’t even mention Dark Souls.

Fear and Hunger 2: Termina is survival horror RPG that has hurt me in a way no other game has in recent memory, but offers an experience with a game I want to share with people.
This video is my attempt at a review, before finishing the playthrough I created in my previous Fear and Hunger 2 Termina video.
Hope you enjoy the video, lets rock!

Ugh. Started playing Tunic but it has a pretty pronounced screen tear when I play
Today's entitled POS customer: guy buys a sub, encounters a sync issue (something that unfortunately exists between Steam and our system). We know the exact way to solve it, and as for the proof of purchase - standard stuff, really.
He sends screenshots, but it's unfortunately too cropped and missing a bit of identifying info we need. We ask him to send it again.
Apparently asking for the correct proof of purchase is harassment and it is "our job to get the right info"

(and looking at his ticket history, every single negative thing is apparently us harassing him and is worthy to report us to the ftc?)
Ixrec: lemme see if I can get a screenshot. I got a 3070 but my screens are 60hz (yeah just haven't bothered getting new ones in years)
damn, tried to record it on my phone and it doesn't show up well...
yeah that ain't working
can you end their account and subscription as them harasing you and just cut service with them for TOS voilation
try forcing VSync in the NVIDIA Control Panel
That's in our toolbox, yes. But mostly for directed insults at us. Threats and saying we're harassing them doesn't quite qualify
I did, i had it set to adaptive and then off. Maybe needs to be completely on
adaptive VSync turns itself off if the refresh rate isn't met, so if the game has bad frame pacing or a FPS cap lower than 60, it won't work
Ah, makes sense
insults to support staff should be enough to terminate service its hidden in a lot of TOSs but rarely enforced due to companies not wanting to lose a paying customer for something like employees not being insulted
if you have a display that supports VRR, I recommend enabling it

VRR?
variable refresh rate, what NVIDIA calls G-Sync Compatible
(and what AMD calls FreeSync)
Hmm, i think not
Forcing it on did the trick
if you buy a display in the future, look for it as VRR is pretty useful to both decrease input lag and avoid tearing (if configured well). Basically, it's the best of both worlds
it comes with some downsides (flicker in dark scenes with unstable framerates, no BFI with VRR on most displays), but it's often worth it
I'll probably go for a 144hz one too, been on 60 for years
after much introspection I have finally settled on what sort of game I want to play next
indie time loop archaeology puzzle/narrative games, apparently
That's not Loop Hero
That webcomic is still going?
Oh my god Ix is finally playing outer wilds
It's happening
I must know what you think after you finish
to set expectations, I'll probably do Forgotten City first, if only because it's much shorter
but yes I knew a few people would want to hear this
I absolutely must hear about your experience with the game when you're done, tag me if you must
perhaps I'll make a thread then
There's a thread for outer wilds
#ForgottenCity: I like how there's the option to steal stuff from people's chests just like in a "normal" game with NPCs, but if you do it ||the gods are immediately angered and you're forced to reset the time loop
||
Ngl, I don't like that. Why give the player the option to do that if they're going to be ||immediately punished for it and force you to go back and reset things?||
Tunic: fucking hell the ||big spear...wolves? Big foxes? They hurt D: ||
||in context the whole story is about preventing someone else from upsetting the gods, so it makes sense that you the player can accidentally (or intentionally) do the same thing and learn this mechanic before an NPC would've told you; it's very easy to simply not do it once you know, since the UI explicitly tells you whether an item is "owned" or not||
||in fact I almost did it on accident, but decided to play nice for now, and then I was told about it, so I immediately quick saved and stole something just to see what would happen||

Have you seen "Gamer Goo"?
Someone literally made anti-sweat gamer hand lotion
please don't talk about Gamer Goo
I'll take my low-tech solution
and i've seen another brand called Gamer Grip
can we talk about Isaac Bath Water instead?
EDMUND
Apparently one of the tiers for the Four Souls kickstarted was in fact
bath water
huh
they renamed themselves
Gamer Goo is now "Klutch1"

yes
honestly a good change
what? don't want a tube of gamer goo?
I don't want any quantity of gamer goo
I think this is the first time a AAA game has judged my laptop worthy of defaulting to "high" graphics
what game
Returnal
on the other hand these setup screens say PLAYSTATION so many times despite this being a PC with an Xbox controller that I'm not entirely sure how much to trust it
the text is hard coded unfortunately and can't be changed with a variable
Or so I would believe
...I was not expecting this to remind me so much of Metroid Prime at the start
what is Returnal
apparently a metroid prime game
what I've always been told is that Returnal is a sci-fi roguelite third-person shooter
scout's log: the local flora is friend-shaped
it must mean it's good if ive never heard of it because that means it's not controversial
oh yeah it was one of those AAAs that came out and everyone was going BEST GAME EVER for a bit but I wasn't in the mood
today I am
wait this is the game with the scary trailer isn't it
anyway I got Metroid Prime vibes right off the bat because it's a lone human woman crashlanding on a planet with nothing but hostile sci-fi aliens to shoot, running, jumping, locking on, a 3D holomap, the world is implausibly separated into neatly sized rooms whose doors have glowing blue accents, and even a scan button
but of course it's not a Metroid
yes, by all accounts it is not a happy game
if you die in the game you die for real
the fact that my only weapon so far is one ||I found on a corpse that looks just like me|| does set the tone pretty unambiguously
(oh and if anyone wants to watch just ask; it's easy to do but these days I figure it's best to wait for interest to be expressed before burning bandwidth on it)
I got the same vibes too when I started it. Absolutely love Returnal.
It's an excellent roguelike.
Can confirm. It is a dark game.
It's also a hard game.
you know you're in for it when the opening setup screens say "this is intended to be a challenging experience"
iirc one youtuber told me that the average player gives up before they see anything besides this first dark forest area
Yeah and for good reason.
It took me a long while to get to the second zone and even longer to the third-onwards.
It is punishing
It's a bit easier these days because you can now save and suspend your sessions. Originally you couldn't do that, which was a bold move considering that a single run can take 2-4 hours if not more.
Despite that I just couldn't put it down.
it is exactly the sort of vibe I jam with in a game.
first death goes to the glowy red thing
Lol
yes
Yeah, I think 99% of players die to that
ive never watched The Boys is it any good or is it just an edgy deconstruction
You CAN finish this game without dying once. But it is next to impossible.
yeah
Mycomorph, yeah
unrelated: "spitmaw" is a great name for a shotgun
yeah I was just going through my learn-while-not-dying panic fight
I understand how they work now
Their ability to teleport around definitely throws ya
I appreciate that the classic "Scan alien stuff. [ding!] Yep, it's compatible with my suit, let's glue it on." trope of the Metroids is now being done with a horror element that arguably was always kinda there
also I have a parasite now
Haha, yeah I love it
The audio logs get pretty disturbing, too
There's just so much more undertone that gets added as you gradually collect those
revenge achieved
