I might watch an LP of this at some point just so I can see the rest of the world
this little cluster of Fromsoft-y games just baffles me so much because I see the theoretical appeal underneath all the totally pointless frustration, and can't understand why these aspects would be any less frustrating, much less appealing, for anyone who didn't already have the game memorized
in any event, I'm gonna replay some Furi as a palette cleanser
I think the feeling of playing against unsurmounting odds is such a core part of the game, that for those that enjoy it, the game would be lesser if it was much easier to go through with it
To be clear, the odds aren't actually that bad, it's not a "I want to be guy" situation, but it's kind of important that the player feels like it is, for the fans of the series at least.
Like, being one random undead walking in the land of the gods, should make you feel small and insignificant, and the gameplay plays a big part of that fantasy
Funnily enough, a game balanced exactly that way, but in which you canonically aren't playing the underdog, would actually frustrate me like it frustrates you.
The fantays plays a huge role as to why I like it
Like, I could never play a game with that balance in which you play a Space Marine in 40k, I want a completely different fantasy for that kind of thing
If a random skeleton 2 hits your space marine, I call bullshit
Discord are you okay?
Ok now it works, for some reason it had an hiccup
that much I get in theory
but I don't think any of that narrative/aesthetic/tone stuff requires that the mechanics be less generous with checkpoints and reset times than something like Celeste
As per Gamesindustry.biz, the European Parliament voted to adopt a report that "highlights the positives of this pioneering industry, but also social risks we need to bear...
IDK I never finished Celeste, I'm just telling you how I feel about this specific situation.
Also what people seek from games can widely differ, you dislike repetition, then some people only play speedruns of one game for 10 years
This is sort of a middle road between that
it's just my go-to example of a game where dying several hundred times is normal but a complete non-issue because every time you die you go back to immediately before the exact jump that killed you in a split second, so no time is wasted replaying stuff you've already beaten
From games kind of lose their difficulty as you play more of em.
The game asks you for repetition untl you achieve a certain mastery of the game
I think I died one time with Demon Souls after Elden Ring.
The amount of stuff you have to repeat has also lessen over the years
Between game to game I mean
ER doesn't have nearly as many boss runs as DS1 for example
to be clear, repeating the part I actually died to in order to learn how not to die is fine; my usual complaint is about having to redo several things I'm not struggling with at all just to attempt the actually hard part again, which makes it incredibly difficult and tedious to learn anything at the actually hard part
I am on two minds about it, because I did like actually getting proficent at running the zone, edge of tomorrow that shit like it's nothing between the 1st and 20th run
It's kind of the same with the Monster Hunters, once you have the pattern of how to play down they become easier by default.
Yeah as I said, some people speedrun the same game 10 years just to become a few minutes faster, this is a middle way to that.
Bake the repetition into the fantasy, make me the underdog in the narrative, and I'm there for it.
I could never speedrun tho, that's like, way too many steps up the ladder (also doesn't have the same fantasy that appeals to me)
and in my case I don't have the skill to do most of the tricks speedrunners use, whether I want to or not
I could see a game that bake a timer in the fantasy in a way that convinces me to do some light speedrunning maybe
I don't either, that's for sure
yeah, lots of games have a mild element of that
I mean, I'm sure I could learn some of them, but without the fantasy I have no motiviation to try to do it
I think your pfp also has a decent speedrunning scene Gen
and then of course there's games like Neon White where "speedrunning" is the normal way to play it
I have tried some speedrun technics in SMO and BotW, they were fun
Feels amazing when it works
if I replayed games more than I do I'd likely try "casual speedruns"
Some technics took me longer to execute than normally clearing the part
But hey, it’s cool
I think another key point that I meant to say earlier but I missed my chance to is
while I do expect games to have a challenge and kill me sometimes, and "hard but fair" absolutely works for me
the dying part is only fun if I'm learning something from it
Yeah unfairness kills the game
like, several of the Ender Lilies bosses took me half a dozen tries to beat, but every try had several moments where I thought "okay that was too close" / "this skill isn't so useful against him" / "that might be a safe time to heal" / "dodging through that is more reliable than jumping over it" / etc etc etc
DS/Sekiro/RW, after the first 5-10 hours, nearly every death is a "wtf was I supposed to do???"
I think Celeste is a game where they executed it pretty well
usually when people say "I have no idea" they have several ideas, but I really had no idea what those games wanted from me past a certain point
(and it's even weirder because those first 5 hours were great)
The games might not be as good with explaining themselves, and that I agree with, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing but it's definitely something that can be disliked about it.
I think you most of the time are just better at reading information in 2d than in 3d, as far as combat goes
Sekiro especially is pretty clear as to what your fucks ups are
Like, you can literally parry everything, except if it's a thrust, an unblockable attack or a grab, and all 3 are telegraphed with specific symbols
So if you get hit in the head by something, you either didn't parry it in time, or you didn't deal with the variety of unblockable hit in the way you were expected to
huh, I only remember one symbol for unblockable attacks?
was I just too early in the game to see the others?
Yes they all have the same symbol, but they have different animations
oh
Thrust you can dodge them laterally, later you also get a special counter for them that is easy to execute, the sweeps you jump over and them jump on the head of the fool, and the grabs are bullshit you dodge and hope you timed it correctly (you didn't, fuck grabs)
well if I'm ever feeling brave there's still a chance I can give Sekiro another shot
granted it definitely failed the "checkpoint placement that doesn't waste my time" test already
Sekiro is definitely the game that is clearer with information of the From Software games
“I got it”(they didn’t)
“I parried!”(they didn’t)
“I jumped!!”(they didn’t)
“I pressed the fucking key!”(they didn’t)
Oh that's for bosses, then there is the normal enemies that usually breaks down with.
It's too many? Stealth
Steath failed? Try to separate them and damage them one at a time
Run and reset their aggro is a viable strategy in most of the encounters too.
You can cheese a lot of areas with some patience in Sekiro
And that's without considering shinobi tools because I forget they exist 90% of the game
yeah the regular enemies weren't the problem
well, until I had to repeat those regular enemies fifty times, then anything involving "patience" was just too tedious
which I did a lot of in the latter half of my attempt
man, this is really making me appreciate how clear and consistent the feedback in Furi is
I never have to wonder why I took damage or whether I did damage, even when I'm being awful at it
Furi is pretty great
I played it to completion once, then they added content and never went back, because it's one of those games that to get back to where I was I'd have to replay it completely anyway
though even Furi contains a good example of the raw skill issue
"perfect parries" in Furi are basically dumb luck for me, consciously trying to be better at parry timing never helps
There are some crazy clips from sekiro from a channel which is very good at both the game and editing, I'm not posting them because it's all basically later bosses or enemies but man, at some point I will
yeah I've tried content like that in the past and can never rationalize it as being the same game I played (or they explicitly did a million things no one could've known to do on a first playthrough so it effectively isn't the same game)
To be clear, me neither
I am very familiar with how the game works, I still wouldn't be able to do shit like that
I have enough flashes of competence to make me finish the game
That's where I get at
Yeeeee boiiiiiii
The Hand (Furi boss #5) is soooo good
HAHAHAHAHHA
Best response to passing a Speech check
they say the fuck word in NV?????
Though to be fair I was threatening to rat him out after getting him free from his contract so that was a bad idea.
But eh
Gotta do what you gotta do in dese wastes
plus you shouldn't let me near thermite, lmao
@wind stump nerd
lol
You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me
i wonder why we get so attached to inanimate objects in games, like the companion cube in Portal or the bucket in Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe
fundamentally, the same reasons we get attached in inanimate objects in real life, or fictional people
of course those two are examples of deliberately pushing the trope as far as it can be pushed, by making the anthropomorphization explicit in-universe right from the start
Do people actually get attached to those things? I just assumed the narrator in the respective game was asserting anyone cared for comedy.
i have a companion cube plush and I love it
me irl when I got to the end of that level
man I should replay Portal 1 and 2
perfect games
https://www.pcgamer.com/91-of-game-developer-survey-respondents-say-abuse-from-players-is-a-problem/
I like the story of the companion cubes development
Supposedly during playtesting they used a regular cube and players kept leaving it behind, thus rendering themselves stuck
So they added hearts and explicit dialogue to emphasize that it's important and you should take it with you
Then playtesters were saddened when they had to leave it behind

im sad everytime I play that level!
and every time I play Portal 2 I always try and smuggle it out
i recently had bought the valve complete collection purely for portal 1 and 2 when it was on sale
super fun games
i have portal 1 chell replaced with portal 2 chell though
Due to chell's design being terrible in the first game
i also have the stick figure replaced with portal 2 chell in the map creator DLC
which can be changed very easily with a cfg file
oh Bendy
no not bendy
was it Bendy?
hold on
yes it was
Bendy is the stick figure
yeah im not a fan of bendy at all
so i just have the stick figure automatically be replaced at game launch
so i can screw around and play/make maps and not have to be him
lol I like him
chell has always been like one of my all time favorite game characters ever
she's my current pc wallpaper too
such a good wallpaper
she's neat yea

I checked every single one and was so glad I did
did it almost make you cry or am I weirdly emotional
The layoffs at 343 shouldn't have happened and Halo Infinite should be in a better state. The reason for both of those things is incompetent leadership up top during Halo Infinite development causing massive stress on those working hard to make Halo the best it can be.

Working on a FPS is probably the worst project due to companies wanting to chase whichever is the biggest thing at this exact moment.
A big issue is also the M$ policy of not having temp workers work on one project more than 6 months? Or 18? Probably 6. But basically rotating some teams and that couldn't really have helped
That is a fairly standard policy - keeping on temp workers indefinitely makes them arguably employees and then they sue you for employee rights
The real problem there is heavy reliance on contractors over employees in the first place
Oh I know, but I forget where I was reading/watching about it. Something about M$'s method made it worse as you'd kinda lose a lot of that skill since they had to be put onto another project or something , so you'd lose the know how on a project that takes more than the 18 or whatever months

the gaming industry has done nothing but crumble down and fall off extremely fast in the last few years
jesus christ
when your main focus is extracting the max amount of money in the shortest amount of time possible
you will crumble
It's not even that games are money focused NOW, even back in the arcade era money was a pretty significant primary objective
but nowadays it's infinitely worse
there's no denying that nowadays the leadership in game companies is just so incredibly worse, so insanely out of touch and extremely extremely greedy
I feel bad for people who want to work in the game industry in the future like me or people that already have worked there for decades and get fucked in the ass because the creatives just aren't valuable members of the company and they simply don't care about their own games/products
I feel bad that the devs have to take the blame for the executives and ceos and the leadership
I’m not sure that this is new
Working in the game industry has essentially always been infamously terrible
I don't know what's worse.
Failing to meet what gamers demand, or failing to meet what corporate demands.
If you adjust for inflation, games used to be more expensive. In the cartridge era, adjusted for inflation, games used to cost $60-$100 a pop. And yeah, the game industry has always been relatively terrible. What we’re really getting is that with the increased visibility through online journalism and blogging and stuff, these stories are more publicly available.
The motivations for Microsoft and all these other companies to add on microtransactions and stuff is due to the fact that games are just more expensive to develop these days. So you get these various business practices to try to deal with that.
I’m not really endorsing it, but yeah.
It's not just that videogames are getting more expensive
They are actively becoming bolder in their attempts to super monetize games just to get more money
I guess failing to meet what corporate demands is worse because that would ultimately mean that familiar IPs no longer get developed
If videogames were worth like 90 bucks today but they had no microtransactions or any shady monetization of any kind I'm sure people wouldn't be extremely mad about that
People would definitely be extremely mad about that
At least in my eyes
People were liiiivid when games were bumped from $50 to $60
And that was before microtransactions
Considering how much hatred people have for monetization of any kind nowadays especially in games that aren't f2p I'd take my chances
So basically what happened with Command and Conquer. They followed corporate, pissed off their fan base in the process, the game underperformed, and now its dead.
That's not my point anyways, my point is that that wouldn't even happen in the first place because it's not about the cost of the development of games but about these people simply wanting to make money quickly without any regard for anything else
Fair enough. Basically the root issue being capitalisms incentives for maximizing profit in the short term over long term planning.
At least that’s what I gather from that
But yeah at this point I just buy indie games.
The war between the artists and the accounting department has been a constant issue from the beginning, unfortunately
But so it goes. As you’re alluding to, indie games and AAA games have different constraints and incentives going on, so they tend to work a little differently.
Considering how many devs are fed up with this kind of stuff and are either revolting unionizing or generally making a ruckus about this I'm hoping that perhaps they can work together to somehow make this situation a bit better for themselves
Similar stuff has been happening on the animation side of things which just like gaming has always been a shit show
It would be nice to see more unionization going on in tech land.
(Suddenly I’m blacklisted from 70% of job boards)
I personally think it is a number of compounding issues:
- Games are just more complex to write/plan/code/debug/etc and that takes a lot longer
- Internet makes it easier and tolerable for things to be shipped out faster, with an understanding that it is okay to push updates as needed
- More competition for your local currency (and that's just game choices; IRL sucks)
- Number of studios is down, world is smaller, and good/bad events follow you more closely
- Money is generally tighter all-around, so leadership makes choices based partly on that
- Folks want things to bring in more cash/continued support/continued use without adding more support
- Games haven't really risen counting inflation (at least for baseline products; personal opinion)
- Upper leadership thinking of money over lifetime for new products; milking more for older or established products with the least amount of work
- Acceptable crunch culture, combined with an aversion to delays if all possible
- Time and money are expensive, so there is a low-risk tolerance at all levels
- Growing unionization/corporate fighting over how low and mid-level people work and live
- Market is essentially a luxury good, which doesn't bode well during bad economic times (soon)
- Shitty acceptable working culture (outside crunch), which scares experienced people and forces newer folks to work more/be put into positions without good foundational experience behind them
- Market panic/bad news can and will do more damage than some legit problems and will sink plans/games/companies
- Other shit I am missing.
this isnt the point but i see these videos in my recommended sometimes and I really hate the title and thumbnail style
You pretty much nailed it.
I think that you missed a side effects from this:
- Games are just more complex to write/plan/code/debug/etc and that takes a lot longer
Game companies are bigger because of this.
At the time you could make a AAA game with a relatively small team and the team culture being directed downstream by 2 - 3 people, so you had more passion projects going.
Now the budget required to make one big AAA game is so big, that you can't really just make it within a very small company.
Games are bigger risks, require more capital, and that capital is less likely to be given to unproven IPs and passion projects, and in exchange for it there is a bigger expectation of return.
Like, to make a comparison
Spyro the Dragon, one of the most beloved games of the PS1 was developed by Insomniac when it was around 20 people
Now Insomniac is 400+ people
A Link to the Past was around 12 people iirc
Ocarina of Time was like 20-30 people, I think?
Right?
I had always assumed it was like 100 people
Watched a couple of documentaries on YouTube recently and learned it was only a few dozen
Team Silent was like 10-11 people, but that was less about money and more about Konami actively hating these people because they underperformed and putting them on a group thinking they would fail
that's genuinely nuts to me like im having trouble wrapping my head around that fact
More Hyrule Journals on it's way.

If you like game design, you should watch this.
That's a very good video
aggggh I still need to actually play OOT
It is one of the most beautiful videos on YouTube
it made me see the kind of religious subtext in OOT
may rewatch it for the hell of it
Yeah, Zelda in general is very Shinto
there was a recording of a religious prayer in the Fire Temple wasn't there?
Larger organisation are always going to have less uniqueness to them, a small team can definitely be someone's project, a huge team there is a finite number ways to organise it in a way in which things actually get done
There are exceptions, Kojima stuff is always going to have his signature of it, but the kind of directors that can pull that kind of weight are not that many nowdays.
My favourite Zelda dungeons are the ones that move, turn, change, and travel through time. After much research, I return from the depths of Hyrule with some Boss Keys and plenty of design details on how these puzzle box dungeons work.

Okay I’m done
Lots of games back in the day especially noticeable in nintendo 64 games used the same texture packs and audio packs for their games
On the other hand, we do have quite a bit 20 men teams that put out games.
Many Indie games are the quality of classics of the 90s
I'm sure games like Mario 64 and OOT use the exact same textures
I knew there was a lot to learn about OoT, but goddamn
In the original version of Ocarina of Time, the Fire Temple's music sampled Islamic recitations from the Qur'an.[note 1] This, like the original Crest of the Gerudo, was removed from later versions of the game by Nintendo because of the religious association. These Islamic recitations were replaced by a MIDI Synthesizer in later releases, ports, and the Nintendo 3DS remake.
from Zeldapedia
You could have an entire game design college course just with that one game
I would check the source of that
I don't know how correct that is
I don't think it was actual real Qur'an recitations from what I seem to remember
That would be the first I’ve heard of that
Like I said this was a sound effect that was used in other games as well
it looks like it was just a sound effect, but it was recitation from the Quran, so we were both right

It sounds vaguely like words but nothing coherent. Definitely an Arabic voice
Oh wait, they also have part of the call to prayer that's very clear
Nothing Qur'anic about it though
interesting
Adhan (Arabic: أَذَان [ʔaˈðaːn]; also variously transliterated as athan, adhane (in French), azan/azaan (in South Asia), adzan (in Southeast Asia), and ezan (in Turkish), among other languages) is the Islamic call to public prayer (salah) in a mosque recited by a muezzin at prescribed times of the day.
Adhan is recited from the mosque five times...
oh ive seen a video with that before
I watched it in my world history class in high school
Yeah. Suffice to say it's in poor taste to put it into music but it's not heretical or offensive

I would assume it would be like plushies
If that cube saved my life and I had to solve multiple puzzles with it, ye I'd be sad to get rid of it
But lots of cubes do that throughout Portal.
Ye, but this one is getting burned for no reason

I treat all cubes with the respect and dignity they deserve
This mentality also works with portal 2, though surprisingly I don't treat the balls with as much care since I haven't known them for as long

I can't get over how diligently the fish read the legalese before committing identity fraud
I do think this is the #1 issue by far: what we / the market considers a bestselling AAA game is orders of magnitude more complex, content-full and thus expensive to develop than it was a few decades ago, and that creates all the usual problematic corporate incentives with ultra-expensive high-risk luxury products
the fact that so many of the "indie" games we play have similar team size and budget to AAAs of the past is kinda wild but also makes the "I mostly play indies now" trend feel like a no-brainer in retrospect
my mind is currently imploding; I just learned the team who made Goat Simulator also made Satisfactory
I had no idea Coffee Stain Studios had their hands in all sorts of projects
such as, but not limited to; Deep Rock Galactic, Valheim... and a few other games I've never heard of before
and that's just the stuff they got on steam
I felt about the same when I first looked up what else Annapurna had done
"indie" is becoming an increasingly odd term for how prolific these devs are
those kinda make sense tho...
at least more than this
a lot of their stuff after I went to look at their stuff plays relatively similarly
most of them are story driven walking sims with game specific mechanics
(and by most i mean almost all the games i recognize from them

but like, Goat Sim and Satisfactory are like, polar opposites (not literally, but like, in terms of polish)
it completely caught me off guard

A super useful tool by the way, with lots of extra information about enemies, items, animals and NPCs, as well as a couple of different "modes" like the ability to toggle Master Mode exclusive stuff or things that only show up during the One-Hit Obliterator trial.
Second: this vi...
You know I never actually realized how lackluster the implementation of Link's house was in BOTW
I remember feeling all these things but never actually consciously thinking about it before, I just felt lke it was kinda disappointing and something was off
because lets be honest you forgot that it existed after an hour
Unfortunately, and all the 'cool' neat perks you get by upgrading it and even getting the house kinda do nothing at all
there really is no point to it
No land to grow your own veggies, no trees to grow your fruit, the bed doesn't do anything special, can't even cook or sit at the table, the horse stable is useless, the shed is completely inaccesible
can't even go fishing at the pond, 0/10
Yeah, the lack of farming at the house surprised me
I expected that feature to show up
The video pointed out something so obvious I never noticed before
Giant chimney, no fireplace?
It’s entirely a role play thing
Which is just… silly. It does feel like an unfinished feature.
Either unfinished or scrapped
Yeah
I hope the sequel will iron out all the rough edges that BOTW had
as fantastic of a game as it is it does have a couple rough edges
A lot of botw involved cut corners tbh. You just don’t notice it as much
Mostly due to the nature of the game's style and the new direction they took I'm sure
The infamous out of bound areas where many assumed would be DLC territory
But never got DLC with additional piece of lands to adventure
Can't wait to see what new stuff we'll be exploring in botw 2

I know people were talking about a full underground hyrule sort of thing
I remember my first time playing through and reaching the ends of the map either on the ocean or inland and seeing the giant mountains and the giant chasm that separates Hyrule from.. the rest of Hyrule? or other continents? and it just feels magical to think what lies beyond there
the game map is already pretty big but man knowing that there could potentially be more is exciting
theres gonna be a lot of sky stuff
subterranean dungeons would be awesome
hopefully we get those
also I thought the house was really cool but I was fairly into roleplaying in BOTW so ymmv
I mean I'm into it too, everytime I used the bed in the house I completely stripped and only kept like my pants or Link's shorts on but it still was completely lackluster
the fact that so many people just forget that the house is even a thing or never even return goes to show how.. useless it kinda is
Would've been great for it to have some actual purpose like farming or taking care of crops and planting stuff, maybe you could do some stuff inside the house or use it as some sort of storage or whatever, just do something with it
would've been incredible to use the shed to BUILD stuff now that I think about it
I always hate it when games do that kind of stuff where they add this room or this part of a building that you can't access
it is annoying how there's most definitely a room you can't go into in Link's house
hmm maybe I should replay BOTW in preperation for TotK
I'm most definitely going to 100% botw in preparation for TotK
I say, knowing fully well that I have no Switch to play it
100% as in all the shrines or 100% as in all the shrines and koroks
100% everything
good luck
I already have all shrines in my current playthrough
ive never done that
I wanna get all quests done and then get all koroks
its annoying how my favourite armour set is locked behind getting all the shrines >:C
It's fairly easy with a guide you just have to actually do it which is time consuming
just put on the hylian trousers
But then you're not using the actual full set
who cares
Link : you know, if you really think about it, I don’t think I’m really a human
the TP set in BOTW is gorgeous
It's my all time favourite Link armor ever in any game
Twilight Princess had the best garb, agreed
i disagree
but I also dont like the look of TP in general
I want Midna back
We all do
🐺
It’s my favorite Zelda
its too dark and gloomy for my liking
Zelda is supposed to be dark and gloomy, haha
no?
Yes
OOT is pretty dark
Wow cap betrayed Mario and changed pfp
OoT, MM, LttP….
im not talking tone wise im talking aesthetic wise
TP is only dark in appearance it's actually quite charming
Yoda is actually Mario
yes and im talking about the appearance
“Me it is, Yoda.”
You can pick up dogs in TP
that makes it immediately the best Zelda game
look at its cute lil butt
Mine are OoT/MM, BotW, LttP and TP
LttP <3
Can’t really choose just one haha
wait and Link's Awakening
I prefer chibi Midna
I just dont really get the TP hype tbh
She’s so chaotic, I love her
I mean it’s not the first time you have an unpopular opinion, Cap, I understand
This Zelda isn't messing around
like im sure it's a great game (cuz it's a Zelda game and most of them are amazing) but idk

and canonically she kisses Link on multiple ocassions as per the manga
I want the Wolf Link amiibo purely for the fact so I can have doggo companion in BOTW
Midna and Wolf Link satisfy my furry side
i also dont like midna very much and think shes just alright
Wolf Link is the one thing I was never super crazy about but the fact that it plays so well with Midna's little shit gremlin attitude makes me actually sort of like it from a narrative standpoint
my favorite is wind waker
based
neither did i

but its my favorite
god Wind Waker is so pretttyy
emulation!
My favorite is faces of evil
and yeah windwaker is great
m y b o y
most Gamecube games have aged incredibly
i dont think i have a fave zelda game, the're all so good its hard to choose
I have a favourite timeline
I still can’t believe they have 3 CD-i Zelda games.
OOT>MM>TP
TP, OOT, MM, LBW, WW, BOTW...
id need a controller to properly play emulated wind waker. i tried but its just too hard on keyboard
lol my favourite timeline is the one where Link dies because it leads to Zelda 1 and LttP
I really like the way OOT, MM and TP just play and transition into each other so smoothly and beautifully, I also really like how tragic that timeline is
...right fiar, i forget i still have my old gamecube controllers and bought a gamecube adapter
what with Link being sent back in time, forgotten about by everyone and he just wanders the land until he just kind of dies and you meet him in TP as the hero that teaches you the moves
and he's finally able to pass on his skills and be recognized

BotW be like : fuck all the timelines we start from scratch
HOLY SHOT
BOTW is ALL the timelines
343 Industries will no longer develop Halo!!
holy shot
as far as we know
BOTW be like fuck it we're doing all timelines now
They’ve been axed from the franchise
CaptainMario
honestly? probably good
Flitter
343 havent exactly made the best halo games
If you were going to buy Factorio, the price is going up by five dollars next week
oh ok
Microsoft has given up on 343i, which has been a pretty poor steward for Halo
relevent source: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/343-industries-will-no-longer-make-halo-games-but-will-oversee-outside-development-report/1100-6510721/
rare Cloud sighting
how're you holding up cloud?
this explains why they fired me lol
I did not know about this personally, this was apparently figured out and leaked by some FTE people who were involved in the closed-door meetings
when did they start making Halo
Halo 4
o
i thought Halo 4 was fine
They replaced Bungie
also the MCC was great
H4 was alright, yeah
then Halo 5 was like "what the fuck"
oh MCC was amazing
i have no opinion because ive never played a Halo
And I agree, the MCC is a triumph
then they're like "no no no guys we'll fix this with Halo infinite" and then just completely fucking imploded
if only on a technical level as the original games were awesome lol
was INfinite nbad
Infinite was a mixed bag
i enjoyed infinite
infinite was clearly hindered by serious technical issues
Some good ideas; but lots of bad execution
which I know of first hand lol
the singleplayer that is
look, i can explain halo infinite being bad with one anecdote:
the shaders are built into the levels. The engine was never designed for open world, so the entire open world section is... one level. If you change a shader and needed to test it in the open world area, you had to rebuild the ENTIRE ISLAND which took 3 hours.
this is why halo infinite was bad.

can you break this down into simple terms so my small brain can understand
if you have a material that looks shiny and you need to fix a bug where it stops being shiny on an outpost in the big open world area, you have to rebuild everything and it takes 3 hours to see if you fixed it.
oh ok
“A whole open world being a single level” sounds extremely horrifying
Jesus fuck I thought your asset streaming thing was supposed to fix that
That’s horrifying
But yeah, I had fun with Halo Infinite, but the technical issues were pretty clear if you knew where to look.
I like the way Skyrim breaks the open world they have into seamless cells
There was just no way it would survive long enough for Campaign 2 to happen either
Yeah, that’s one of the more correct ways to deal with open words
So you don’t have that issue of a giant monolithic level where one change in one place takes hours to compile and compound your side effects
Also it makes performance a nightmare
Yeah imagine having to load the whole fucking world everytime
I was going to say, doesn't that make it absolutely shit for performance since the entire world has to be loaded up at all times even when you're not in a certain area?

is it ok if i share this story? because its hilarious
Well it's about f*ckin' time.
don't credit me but sure

oh it streams things
but it streams one gigantic level
i was told we tried to do that and failed for some reason
Yeah, that’s a dated way to do it. Which makes sense, given that’s an early open world game.
I’m not sure what modern open world games do these days, though
Missed the halo convo but 5 was pretty good
I believe Unreal 5 has a cell system for open world.
PSP recording/quality test.
I chose this great scene from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

I forgot how incredible this song is when fighting Sephiroth in CC
Holy hell it's such a good track
Didn't expect a FF game of all things to have a super hype metal track
But Nobuo Uematsu himself is in his own metal band
Oh apparently it's "rock" and not metal
Do you want to know how this sounds in a piano?
Check this out! https://youtu.be/qjQ3PaxyBDQ
Sounds metal enough to me
Started Fire Emblem Engage and I’m pleasantly surprised how much I am enjoying it. I miss the heavier social stuff that Three Houses dabbled in but I do have to say Intelligent Systems alone have made a more technically competent game, which kinda shows how poor Koei Tecmo are on the technical aspects in making games…
DLC isn't even bad if it adds more content
I think breaking the world into a grid is still a common approach, it's just that we have actual ways to stream meshes now (and not just textures)
...? Early? Open world games had been around for many years by this point; if nothing else, there were the previous three Elder Scrolls games...Grand Theft Auto had been around for a while too (even if you discount the early games) and so had the Elite games...Skyrim seems quite late, to me!
Within the context of open world games becoming particularly mainstream, I mean.
The tech surrounding all those listed games make me feel like calling them "early open world" fits.
Of course open world goes as far back as the 80s, but in the modern sense of open world, there weren't very many examples until the 2010s.
While Skyrim is far from new to the genre, it’s fair enough to regard it as a title that helped catapult the genre into what we know it as today.
But yeah, ultimately the point is regarding the technology that underlies them, which has largely been bespoke up 'till now.
UE5 is the first general engine to have a native system for building open world games, I think?
Crystal Dynamics is ending active development for Marvel's Avengers. https://t.co/lpz7v2Fqxc
1292
Not surprising.
Well maybe my local game studio will switch over to an IP I care about someday
Yeah, like listing the Elder Scroll games, I believe Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are all using the same engine.
the last time i played that avengers game was back in 2020
and only far enough into it to get a item in fort
after that i got bored and stopped playing lol
Bethesda loves recycling its in-house engine
i forgor about this game
I think Starfield is finally using a properly new engine?
Ah, it's Creation Engine 2
Still a sequel of their in-house engine
ngl it still amazes me what all UE5 can do lol
the newish Nanite and Lumen system as well is just wow
It's also pretty fascinating how it has grown to be both a game engine and also a cinematographic tool for filmmaking.
the fact that they can even get stuff like this to run at a solid 60fps+ is really surprising
ngl i thought this was a Hello Neighbour 2 screenshot for a second (UE 5 is really pretty tho)
thats a fort shot lol
Oh right, the UE5 update for Fortnite
yes
every tree is like 300,000 polys now
this is another nutty one
most buildings have like millions of polys as well
they pretty much use the game itself as a testing ground for new UE features
which is really neat
this talk of polygons reminds me of this
https://twitter.com/mariobrothblog/status/1543641517394362368?lang=en
That's dumb. It doesn't need to be complex
its funny
So you know that fish on Twitch in Japan which has been playing Pokémon for a while?
It had been playing Scarlet/Violet lately and it somehow managed to navigate to the eShop and buy something

I linked that early this morning when I saw that. It was hilarious.
overly detailed meshes are a boon for emulator users 😛
the PP-7 model in GoldenEye has a ridiculously detailed curve for a 240p resolution, it's almost like it was designed to be viewed at 1440p if not 4K
Emulator users can mod in their own meshes
I want the game to perform when it comes out
I'm now Anomaly Research Rank 172 and getting closer to 200.
this is peak gaming experience. Best in-game $15 I've ever spent
Which game?
GTA V
Ah
Nothing like abusing my Luck stat to buy a brand new sniper rifle "just in case" dealings with the Legion go awry.
step 1 of playing FNV: make a plan
step 2: get hopelessly distracted wandering the wastes

https://vxtwitter.com/ashsweetring/status/1616702116181180416 man, I wanna see more drone shows like this
Sped up and muted because I certainly wasn't crying. 💙
Also sorry it gets kind of hop-ish around D.IV - I really like that game. 😀
@LifeatBlizzard @Blizzard_Ent
man archer is fuckin' useless, lmao
(Okay so that turned out to be an elite/dark enemy who wouldn't trigger unless I got in her range
Funny bug, though)

I did indeed miss it. Only two of these are a game I heard of
i heard of zero sievert, i think iron pinapple did a segment on source of madness and it was eh, supraland six inches under does look fun but i'm not getting it since i used my game budget this month already
I think I heard of Submerged once years ago, the others nope
Under the apple tree and price of freedom are two of the best final fantasy osts for me
I'm replaying Black Mesa, since the last time I played it was before the Definitive Edition. Also trying out the "Black Mesa" difficulty setting, I played it on hard previously but found I had to resort to cheap tactics too often
6K 120 FPS, here we go
GORDON
Has Nintendo confirmed that they will make more Mario?
TBF Nintendo didn't release a half-baked multiplayer game and a show where the creators outright admitted they didn't know the lore in the past year
Now if this was 2016 Nintendo making Metroid, then I'd be surprised, lmao
I'm still confused where this meme about "the Halo TV show writers didn't know the lore" is from considering how many lore references were in the show
feels like it's become one of those shows the internet just decided to hate without/before watching (and tbf the Kwan Ha subplot kinda sucked but I liked the rest of it)
Oh, they didn't look into the games, that's it
when I said "lore references" I was including some oddly specific video game stuff in the show (like exactly how many shots the spartan laser fires)
at this point I can only conclude the meme is from some quote like "since we're writing a brand new story we didn't look super hard at the details of the games, you can see we moved a lot of the novel lore more front and center" but taken way out of context

Either way, 2022 was a bad showing for Halo so 343 felt the need to put out a statement, no matter how odd it seems
yeah, the whole situation with Infinite has been a mess, and a bizarrely slow moving one
atm I'm just confused about what the plan is since this seems to directly contradict what we've been told before
but since I don't do multiplayer it also doesn't really matter to me until a new game comes out
(or maybe a new game's worth of content for Infinite, but not your typical DLC-sized bites)
should I start Shovel Knight or Monster Sanctuary today...
Because the director of the show proudly declared in an interview that he didn’t do any research.
ah the director, okay
the version I've always heard was the whole creative team, which is what didn't match up
Having looked it up, the showrunner explicitly said the whole creative team didn’t look at the games at all because the past lore was too restrictive for them. They just looked at the basic framework that they were handed by 343 and ran with that. Even the lead actor had never played the Halo games before.
weird
Pablo Schreiber recently admitted he didn't play the 'Halo' games, but he learned about Master Chief in a 'boot camp' before the TV series.
So yeah, they kinda kneecapped themselves.
Well those references are probably part of the pitch/lore that 343 gave them
oh, "pitch" sounds a lot less thorough than that to me
343 was involved in the project, so they probably gave them the idea
oh well it's hard to judge what any of this means from the outside
Yeah
I'm just glad the show was any good, despite this bizarre attitude
I’m sure someone who has experience with the filmmaking industry could have a plausible explanation
and frankly terrible PR lol
...the halo show was good?
last i heard chief had a love interest?
I know MA didn't like it but my family was mostly very positive on it (again barring the one subplot)
yes
(which is hardly unprecedented but yes)
As long as you ignored the fifty percent of it where nothing at all happened
It did get a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes
What the absolute f*ck.
I don't play the game either but even I knew how bad the Halo show was and how it butchered the characters and setting. This just makes it even worse.
ok let's not spread misinformation here, just because it's a continuity reboot doesn't mean it's "butchering" anything
I don’t even remember what the point of that entire subplot was. Presumably it resolved into something useful but I don’t remember at all
It’s explicitly an alternate timeline
in this season, that subplot did not go anywhere useful, it was just dumb (maybe it'll have a point eventually)
It’s not canon, so…
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Much of what they were doing seemed to be doing their own world building, to be fair, just not necessarily in the most engaging way possible
S2 is a thing, so maybe that’ll be interesting?
ironically the brand new stuff was the boring subplot that went nowhere lol
I don’t either
most of the best parts were all reshuffles of game + novel stuff
Yeah, pretty much
in particular allowing some of the messed up stuff in the novels to be part of the main plot, instead of background too far in the past for game canon to ever properly deal with now
I remember we got an entire episode without the useless subplot, which was great until the next episode had only useless subplot
I feel the love interest subplot was executed kinda clumsily and seemed entirely unnecessary to drive the main narrative, but that’s just me. They could’ve handled the Covenant woman in a more interesting way, followed through more on the angle of her being a double-agent instead of the fate she ended up with.
Just felt like they kinda cheated their way out of that potential angle
But the finale was fairly neat nonetheless
I did generally like how they did the Spartan combat
I don't disagree, but then I see the "love interest" part as not a subplot per se but ||another symptom of the forerunner devices' influence we don't fully understand||
lol
yeah I think my favorite scenes were the spartan v spartan fights
Maybe. Kinda doubtful about it, but it’s not entirely impossible
It did hint at a potential purpose for that in the long run I suppose
I get the doubt, for me it's one of those "S2 could make me 100% okay with this, so we'll see" things
if it's just there for the usual gratuitous reasons why action movies have girls to "get" then yes that's a big
Kai's the best girl in that show anyway
Kai’s always best girl
I think it was the corridor crew vfx guys that reacted to i think the final episode's big fight and it just wasn't very good
I liked the final episode fight but it did have some of the standard annoying pitfalls of movie/tv fights, which is why I liked the spartan v spartan ones more
Although I am amused that Cortana was just confused/concerned with the love subplot.
Cortana in general I'm super happy with
I think Cortana got a little underused, but yeah
I guess it depends how much you consider the other characters using her to be her screentime
I imagine she'll have more to do in S2 now that the Halsey/Chief trust issue is, uh, "resolved" and ||Chief himself maybe stopped existing sort of
||
speaking of stuff you could never do in game canon
ok, time to start a new game
let's go with Spade Paladin or whatever it's called
I prefer leaving cosmetics on their defaults unless I'm replaying stuff
the 20-second intro is sadder than it has any right to be

I think I'm doing okay so far
I'm aware lol
I knew you weren't online just because you didn't show up when I mentioned it earlier

I recommend a d-pad for this game
i use my analog stick because ive found its easier to transition into a shovel drop with it but ymmv
I was fiddling with both during the first level and eventually settled on the d-pad as easier to tell when I was also pressing down
Yeah
343’s has fumbled with the series ever since halo 5. Im surprised there still being given a chance by MS
Gesundheit. 🤧
Monster Sanctuary already feels more like my current gaming mood
@gaunt marten I'm guessing you already have some tips in mind for what I should know / care about / try to optimize with all these numbers I don't yet understand?
Oh yeah
Uh
Ignore all of them
Getting five (or six stars) requires maximizing some of these scores, but you don't need to look at them
The hardest system to grok at the start is the combo system
Once you have that down, you'll probably be at a place in the game where you can re-fight bosses to get missable rewards from them
Buffs and debuffs score improves the more buffs and debuffs you apply. Healthiness means stay at full health. Combat duration means don't spend so many actions, and execution is about dealing as much damage as possible and getting high combos

I think I like Meirin more
Meiling mirrors are pretty insane though, given the lack of projectiles/strong melee game leading to a lot of tactical fuckery, even with just AI

Looking forward to the Oxford English Dictionary acquiring sedecordle

I like this guy
He's quiet and attentive
i totally read that as "quiet and attractive" at first
I'm ace so attentive is attractive to me
@river veldt you should play RDO with me
You can be cowboy mario
Red Dead Online is free if you get it separately from RDR2
I also doubt it can
also it's not free it's 10 bucks lol
At least, not if you want ultra HD mega quality horse testicles
lol
Yeah but what about the rest of the horse
PS1 era graphics except the peaches
Priorities are important
tried out Commander Keen and damn is it a quiet game
the jumping physics are really good though
i just wish it had music
ow do i get steam games to run in a window
it's very annoying how they go in full screen
and there's no options menu for Commander Keen because it is ancient
Try alt+enter
Well it is a really old game
There's a few things you can do
You can either run it in fullscreen anyway, you can set a custom scale factor on your screen to make everything bigger and then set it back when you're done
You can use the magnifier tool, or you can look for a version of the game that has been modified to work better with modern PCs
this is annoying
Playing old games on PC is annoying. That's why I emulate when possible
Emulators might be buggy at times, but they're a lot more guaranteed to work well
I figured the version on steam called "Commander Keen Complete Collection" would work just fine but apparently not
It's commander keen and it's the complete collection
i guess I did get what it said on the tin
In the future for very old games like that I recommend checking out GOG first
GOG has a business where they bring old games and make them more compatible
that art is so uncanny valley to me idk why
They do the compatibility work for you and it often works better than random companies
But it's still not guaranteed
If you don't want to do the compatibility work, you will need a refund every once in a while
(Or just don't play old games)
lol
Flitter if I followed your rule of not playing games that were older than me I wouldn't be able to play Doom
Keep in mind the GOG bundle is missing the titles Keen Dreams and Aliens Ate my Babysitter, but I don't know about the steam version
Hey my rule works for me because I'm 30.
You're not 30
I'm 20
Yeah
I wouldn't be able to play like half of all the Mario games :<
So your rule should be "I don't play most games ten years older than me unless they're marios I guess"

Also don't forget to ping Ember. I think he can hook you up with a working copy of Commander Keen
He streamed it once
@dawn harness help
Well not right now
Because he was off the userlist
did he?
Yep, I was looking
Odds are he might be sleeping, but I know Friday nights he's awake at this time
I did not know that

No
oh ok
do you have a copy of Commander Keen that won't be the size of a postage stamp and also wont be too complicated to set up
Uh idk
what doi you mean you dont know
The "won't be too complicated to set up" part is hard to figure out
excuse-me
what in the actual fuck
It’s not terribly uncommon for a game studio to have several various prototypes in development at one time in order to pitch them for a full game. The general expectation is that most of them won’t make it into the full production phase.
One typical studio might have like 2 or 3 before they pick one, but Ubisoft is pretty big, so…
yeah, "in development" could mean a lot of things
oh wow oldschool Keen ... I played it when I bought the iD Anthology (all of the games by iD up to Quake) and really enjoyed it. There were also some other hidden gems there -- Catacombs was a blast, and Rescue Rover was a fun little puzzle game, and my wife and I both played Dangerous Dave pretty seriously for a while.
gosh dangit scrolling failure
well, Commander Keen got mentioned above, so ... yeah that
Yeah, I don't have any interest in it, but Captainmario seems to like the idea of it
i liked commander keen when i was young, but i really sucked at it, and platformers in general
i didn't own it, i could only play it at a friend's house, so i didn't get to spend hours building muscle memory and "getting gud" like most kids did with platformers
Square Enix has purposefully withheld review copies of new game Forspoken, which doesn’t bode well for its release on Tuesday.
I finally got to max Anomaly Research Rank. I have also fully augmented all the hammers I use as well as the Wyvern Blade "Luna" and with that done I'mma get some sleep.
I felt like one of the few that enjoyed the demo for what it was. I still have lots of reservations especially with the writing
Sounds close to a full out scam to me, that or incredible incompetence, though the line between that and malice is getting ever thinner
Nobody incompetent can do that
You have to be actively looking to spend the lowest amount of money possible to get the product out, laws be damned
Still probably better than the average PC port by Koei Tecmo 🔥
What do you think of my RDO character
Feel free to make fun of me for using a Mauser instead of a revolver in the cowboy game
That is a really long barreled mauser
Oh neat
that actually makes sense
I noticed that a couple days ago -- quordle was redirecting me.
quordle is also, to me, the hardest of the multi-wordles. My win rate is 95%. I'm still at 100% in both wordle and sedecordle. 97% in dordle. I skipped octordle because it's basically just short sedecordle.
Nah Rockstar just forgot how Mauser holsters work
R* also forgot about RDR2+online in general
so it seems

Yoooo!
i installed a whiteboard mod for StS
large stink
Indeed
You're okay!
I'm acceptable!
For Monster Sanctuary: if you're playing on normal or expert, you probably had a suitable team to get five stars on that specific boss.
It's relatively easy to level up monsters as well as mix and match them. Don't be afraid to experiment with teams that work really well together or against specific enemies
Getting five stars on Minitaur probably gives you its egg. Minitaur is a tricky monster in the sense that it's a mediocre damage dealer tank hybrid alone
It shines when it has another monster to give it buffs.

The holsters give it away?
Or is it just my vibes
I'm a fan of NPC combat and bounty hunting gives me gold in exchange for it
I'd like to go moonshiner next tho so I can have a shack
Yes and yes the vibes, i also love doing some bounty hunting, but since i ran out of goal and no event bonus for doing it so im taking a break for now
So me and my boys doing some poker instead
Wish I could play poker lol
Also wish R* would let us play blackjack instead
You can play blackjack in the parlor house in Rhodes in storymode
Yep
And does Rockstar really expect me to hunt a human player over a $2 bounty?
I get that's like 20 murders worth of RDO bounty but like
Damn
I don't like killing for some reason, I usually take them alive for extra money
Also to keep my pose to be honorable
R* should give some update on RDR online, especially anti cheat
Fr
I don't like killing players
Unless they shoot first
Then I pop their head off with my Lancaster until they fuck off
True
Or if they fuck with my horse
I don't mess with people unless they want it
You touch my horse and you're heading to the great big saloon in the ground
Based
Taking players alive is basically impossible though
Unless you have a bounty wagon
Wish I had friends to posse with lol
I'd probably have a better time with both having fun and dealing with cheaters if I had some pals with me
Well thankfully I do have bounty wagon
Just me, myself, and I
If you need a friend to play with im down
Crossplay is possible right?
Also I'm pretty sure our timezones are rather different
IDK
Oh and my Xbox is fucking weird about internet
After a few minutes it'll like
Half disconnect from the internet
Like I can stay in an online game but if I try to initiate something that'll require a server swap then it'll boot me
So unless I race over to it immediately I can't do any legendary bounties, blood money opportunities, or series
I can't even change my fucking horses name
I see, maybe you're using wifi instead of LAN? Tbh i dont know anything about console
It's WiFi I think yeah
But
It's supposed to be
Nobody I've spoken to was able to even diagnose a problem, let alone fix it
Even Xbox support
Dude just told me he had no clue
Since its a connection problem the best idea I come up with is switching from wifi to LAN cause I know LAN is way better than wifi
I guess I'll look into it
Aight, good luck
It's fucking annoying
It could be an issue with Xbox live
Typically it tells me "couldn't connect to Xbox live services"
Looking at network settings
I think WiFi is the only option
But is there a LAN port in your xbox?
Idk
So I ran a network connection test after my Xbox started doing the thing
It's giving me a DSN error
Now, I know it ain't a problem with my router, cus then I wouldn't be talking here
And it shouldn't be an issue with my DSN being set up incorrectly, as then it wouldn't be giving me any internet
But I always get a few minutes before it stops, and even then it doesn't boot me from whatever I'm doing, even if it's an online game where in actively interacting with other players
DNS*
bruh
I was playing Amazing Frog V3 and I was honking the horn of a car way too much, and the game told me to stop with a fake pop up saying something bad is gonna happen, but i continued (cus curiosity) and the game just went "k" and closed the game and discord
Sadly idk anything about Xbox, so I'm sorry if I couldn't help you with your problem @sonic dune
DNS errors can be an issue of bad caching too. Like if you've got a local DNS cache, or even one at your ISP, that didn't get key updates propagated to it, some stuff might be fine and then some stuff might be inaccessible.
Blessed by Luna.
I love fighting monsters here.
Now I'm mad at my m2 mac. For some reason it's now struggling emulating Burnout 3 on PS2 at 1080p
Look at your bottlenecks
are you using AetherSX2? Is it on sector or battery? Is it thermal throttling?
also check AetherSX2's emulation settings, make sure multi-threaded VU is enabled. Also try both Vulkan and OpenGL backends
Burnout 3 Takedown seems to have a bunch of emulation problems. Check the wiki page
I ended up having to change the renderer to Vulkan to make it run fine at 1080p
Now there is not a single fps drop
It is so funny how I feel like I require 1080p now in this game
So hard to see the traffic in the distance on anything less
Also what is sector and battery?
i just consider that hard mode /s
sector = connected to AC power
