#compilation album restoration idea

I didn’t realize the compilations (not the numbered ones but for example the uncaged volume $foo) were over until today and I’m kinda bummed out. For me i see a song in these compilations as one of the best and showcases the best releases.

I was thinking of some alternatives like the community making continued numbered compilations but the artwork and lore could be an issue.. but we still do BO20XX competitions yearly.

So I’m proposing we try to bring these back but possibly on a seasonal/3-month basis. Things can change a lot between those seasons and I feel like songs and favorites in certain months and timeframes can be encapsulated this way. This also gives us 60 songs that the community can select as the best and throw them all in.

Or maybe take the winners of the favorite release of the month polls and put them together?

#

I could rant and talk about why the compilation albums were great and I felt like it sort of unified all of monstercat artists but I’m sure everyone knows what I mean

yeah I get it

misty musk
#

also even if they’re not uploaded to streaming services even a website page of the dedicated best can be made and maybe an album logo so people who download music can make the album themselves locally

glossy leaf
#

but they aren't coming back

misty musk
#

if nobody’s going to make them I can at least try to get community polls going to make something

I think the problem is that they're really just glorified playlists at this point, and if there's not an additional cost associated with it (merch, for example) then people at large won't really care much

#

Compilations of brand new music could be nice but there's always the risk of just tanking streams as opposed to releasing each song individually as singles

misty musk
#

Streams per artist?

remote prawn
#

just in general

misty musk
#

Release the song separately first?

remote prawn
#

could work, the compound 2021 compilation was like that

glossy leaf
#

hmm

#

I got an idea

#
  • Announcing a small tracklist for the comp (4-7 songs)
  • Releasing tracks one by one
  • Releasing the comp when all the songs except one are released
#

and the small tracklist is the final one

not the numbered ones but for example the uncaged volume $foo
that's what the "numbered ones" are tho?

@misty musk There's a large number of reasons that the compilations don't work in 2024 but I'll give you my take:
Compilations used to provide audiences with a way to listen to a wide variety of artists all at once and discover new songs, but by the end of their lifespan, there was a noticable lack of variety. 017 had 2 artists w/ multiple songs, Uncaged vol 10 had 14. The whole point of the compilations was to bring the audiences from different artists together, so having a lack of variety of artists made them not work as well.

misty musk
#

alr, fair. But why not release the compilations a bit farther apart then?

simple comet
#

Bigger compilation =/= better

#

The uncaged and instict volumes were 20 weeks apart each time.

#

That's already a lot of space.

misty musk
#

that’s good!

#

quality over quantity

Call me crazy but imo releasing on mcat is a big deal itself and you’ve made quite a journey if you’ve been able to do so

simple comet
#

Artists used to get signed to Monstercat for their ability to bring something sonically new to the label and bring in new fans that would then help the compilations.

misty musk
#

now they’re just kinda signed for being big

simple comet
#

Not necessarily.

#

Most artists on Monstercat aren't that big.

misty musk

When I was young like, 9 years old I honestly saw mcat as like the final frontier

simple comet
#

Monstercat was never the final frontier.

misty musk
summer terrace
misty musk
#

yeah that sucks

simple comet
misty musk
#

basically just being big enough Ro make deals and collabs with big songs?

summer terrace
#

uncaged is at vol 16, instinct at 12 and silk at 5
such a long time without compilations

simple comet
misty musk
#

call me crazy but I’m not in it for the music just so I can end up with a big collab or anything

summer terrace
#

I saw some, but the tracklists have been questionable compared to mine

misty musk
#

I’m in it to enjoy the music and uniqueness

simple comet
misty musk
#

Which ultimately I can’t complain about bc it’s been like that forever

#

even those super good songs I love that feel like are made more with love and for good music than money

simple comet
#

Monstercat is a good launch platform for a lot of artists but there's a limit as to how much Monstercat can do.

#

Monstercat isn't a major label.

misty musk
#

So if I want to find the music I love… suggestions?

simple comet
#

?

misty musk
#

Like if I want to find or discover new music especially of a certain genre where do I look?

simple comet
#

My best recommendation is to literally search on youtube "[Insert genre here] Mix"

misty musk
#

alr

#

and as for myself.. well I’m not really that excited about money. I see it as a plus but not something I expect to live off of

simple comet
#

It's hard to realize how much time and energy the top artists put into music.

#

Some people are in the studio for 8 hours or more every day.

misty musk
#

but what about if I just want to do it as a hobby?

simple comet
#

That's fine and all

#

But don't expect to get on Monstercat if it's just a hobby.

misty musk
#

at this point mcat is far too out of reach

#

I don’t expect to get to mcat especially with what I like and make

simple comet
#

Tbh, don't expect to get on most labels if it's just a hobby. Only the small labels take hobbyists.

misty musk
#

well ya start small

simple comet
#

Anyways, back to compilation albums.

misty musk
#

whoops, sorry

simple comet
#

The point is they just don't work.
