#I got Immich Plus, can't proceed past URL setup

I get prompted to activate with my key for my Family plan. It asks me to set up a URL. I tried a generic one since it implied this was for my browser only (if it needs to be unique that should really be on that page).

Anyhow no matter what URL I set up, it accepts it and then it does not work, and the URL never resolves at all.

I assume some automation didn't fire behind the scenes. Is it possible to correct this? And if not, how do I get a refund?

Its not clear to me what you're trying to do? You would enter the url of your immich instance

Immich is a program that you deploy/run on your home server. Are you aware of this?

That definitely is not a payment for a hosted component

I saw that information, but the email sort of implied otherwise.

Why does it give me a product key, for a product I host myself? I was trying to avoid hosting on an internal device right now because my main media server is pretty bogged down with video transcoding, and it was implied to me there was paid hosting on this app

product key unlocks this

As it says on buy.immich.app

Building Immich takes a lot of time and effort, and we have full-time engineers working on it to make it as good as we possibly can. Our mission is for open-source software and ethical business practices to become a sustainable income source for developers and to create a privacy-respecting ecosystem with real alternatives to exploitative cloud services.

#

That’s why we ask you to pay for a product key

median elm
#

So it's a meaningless key, essentially, to make people donate to support the app? I paid because I want to support the app but thought since there was a key, and a family vs individual, there was...something more to it.

I'm unsure why but when I researched this some Copilot info implied you could do paid hosting.

To clarify then, is this one of those things, where you all federate with my hardware and maintenance?

#

Or will the logins for it be local to my host device?

little zenith
#

Everything is local to your machine, we don't do any kind of federation or maintenance

median elm
#

"Product key" implies there's like...a product

edgy burrow
#

yes, Immich is the product

#

We don't believe open source needs to be antithetical to selling the software, as Immich does take a lot of money to make (multiple full time employees)

#

We remain GPL licensed and no paywalls

The page makes all of this about as clear as we've been able to manage

median elm
#

Seems I was misinformed. I have been trying to plan a migration of the family photos and part of that was comparing options with AI. Copilot is quite convinced that there was a paid hosted version of this app.

Frankly, I could see how it got confused. You are "selling" a "Iicense"

#

It probably filled in the blanks, it does that some times unfortunately

#

Either way seems I was misinformed

There are some third parties that offer hosted immich but I'd be wary of those since in it's current form all data is unencrypted

#

Getting a VPS and running Immich on it would work though

median elm
#

I have a VPS and reverse proxy for other things, I was hoping to avoid doing the same for this so relatives withless tech savvy could use it easily and I didn't have to manage an offsite backup, but it sounds like I will be going that route either way

#

Thanks for the information, sorry to have wasted you alls' time on this whole weird request. Appreciate the response regardless

We're always happy to set the facts straight, the less confusion out there the better

Is there anything you think we could do to clear up or clarify the confusion around this topic? It's akin to buying a product key for Photoshop back in the day, with the exception that we also distribute it for free 🙂
