1.) Uploaded iCloud image via iPhone app.

2.) Deleted image on Immich server side.

3.) Deleted image from trash.

4.) Attempted re-upload.

5.) Reupload denied, marked as duplicate. Item cleared from trash displays an active link to deleted trashed image. But image is no longer visible in trash.

Is the initial upload using foreground/background backups, or using the "share to Immich" thing?

final crystal
#

The initial upload was likely done using the cloud icon in the top right corner of the iOS app.

#

So foreground(?)

#

Although I do have background turned on

storm lichen
#

The re-upload, did that happen through web or through the app?

paper briar
#

The app's got a list of assets that it's already uploaded

#

You'll want to clear that

bleak halo
final crystal
#

Okay, generated a log, seeing some errors, I'll try to boil it down if I can

storm lichen
#

That way nothing gets lost ;)

final crystal
#

Is it relatively anonymous?

final crystal
#

I'm scanning through it and I'm not seeing much id info

storm lichen
final crystal
#

kk, cool, I'll upload what I streamed out

#

You guys can probably scan it better than me

storm lichen
#

Did you re-upload through web or through mobile?

final crystal
#

I think I tried both

#

When one didn't work, I tried the other

storm lichen
# final crystal

Having the logs set to debug by default is.... spammy ๐Ÿ˜…

final crystal
#

Haha, I'm sorry

#

I can change that from now on, thanks for the direction

storm lichen
#

Log or warn should be fine

#

You rarely need more, and if you do you're deep diving anyways

final crystal
#

kk

#

Oh, and what I uploaded in main topic

storm lichen
#

I don't see anything bad though ๐Ÿค”

final crystal
#

Those two in the middle - I'm willing to experiment with those

#

Sorry for Cap 4 spoilers

#

I deleted them from my device, because "expendable", but again, didn't want to lock myself out of the photos forever like that one from yesterday.

#

Changed log level to warn

#

Do you guys want me to try and replicate it? Or wait and hold off for now?

#

These photos were background uploaded, I believe

#

So in theory, I should be able to download the exact copies, and then just dump them back into the iCloud Photos folder I have on my desktop.

#

So what I would propose to (try to) duplicate the issue from yesterday:

1.) Download one of those copies from Immich.

2.) Move it back to iCloud.

3.) Delete the copy from Immich.

(?) 4.) Delete Immich trashed copy.

5.) Try to re-upload from phone.

#

(And honestly? This week has been a NAS/Docker blur for me. It may have even been the day before yesterday.)

storm lichen
final crystal
#

It'll put the photo back into my phone exactly with the same metadata as before

storm lichen
#

We've already established that this might not work

final crystal
#

Ah

storm lichen
#

What'd be interesting is if you can re-upload it from web afterwards

final crystal
#

Okay, so (on your mark), I'll:

1.) Download the original of one of the photos.

2.) Delete said photo.

3.) Delete photo from trash.

4.) Try to reupload via web interface.

5.) Log after?

#

Ideally I would do it the first way - because then it would sync the photos back with iCloud and Immich together. In the correct timeline ordering from the metadata.

#

And I'd get that cloud with the checkmark again?

#

I tried downloading straight to the phone but the phone app converts the image when you download it. It does the same for GIFs, too.

#

Downloads exclusively as JPG, and sets time/date to the time/date of your download. Not the og image's time/date.

final crystal
#

k, Trying now

storm lichen
final crystal
#

Yeah, but I'll never get that cloud with the checkmark back

storm lichen
#

You care about that? ๐Ÿ˜…

final crystal
#

But doing it your way - working on it

#

OCD, man, it's a bitch, lol

#

Excuse my language

storm lichen
#

Feel it ๐Ÿ˜…

final crystal
#

Upload success

storm lichen
#

That's good to hear

#

So delete it again, and try re-uploading from your phone (that will fail)

final crystal
#

So maybe trying it the first way the other day is what caused my issue

#

k

storm lichen
final crystal
#

Okay downloaded to phone, cloud checkmark (OCD is liking that) but not in the correct place in the timeline. I could always edit that in Immich's web UI, though.

storm lichen
#

Then you didn't download the exact file

final crystal
#

Yeah, it didn't retain the metadata when downloading from the website. WEIRD.

#

I thought it always did when it came from the site's UI.

storm lichen
#

It absolutely does

final crystal
#

Gotta love the rabbit hole.. Okay.. Well that's a new issue then, now.

#

I have everything set to originals, I thought I made sure of that

storm lichen
#

How did you download it to your phone?

final crystal
#

It just synced when I uploaded it to Immich's web UI

#

Oh, you mean the original? It was a screenshot.

storm lichen
#

I am confused about what you did

storm lichen
final crystal
#

No

storm lichen
#

So how did you get the original back on your phone?

final crystal
#

I downloaded it from Immich

#

Deleted it from Immich

#

Deleted it from Immich's trash

#

And reuploaded to the web UI

#

Then it synced to my phone

#

I had originally deleted it off the phone

storm lichen
#

It does not sync the original to your phone

final crystal
#

Ah

storm lichen
#

How did you re-download the original in the last step?

#

I feel like you're misunderstanding me

final crystal
#

Clicked on the image

#

Went to the hamburger icon

#

Download

storm lichen
#

You opened the Immich website on your phone?

final crystal
#

I'm on my desktop atm

#

So I could get you the initial log

storm lichen
#

Are you trying to give me a hard time? lmao

final crystal
#

lol

storm lichen
#

The original was gone from your phone

#

How did you get it back there?

final crystal
#

Yes

storm lichen
#

To re-upload

final crystal
#

The Immich web GUI from my desktop Windows PC.

#

In Firefox.

storm lichen
#

What has your windows pc to do with your phone?

final crystal
#

It's just where I am right now, my phone is my main photo device that I use

storm lichen
#

Okay hear me out

#

The web upload worked, so we decided to try uploading it from the phone again

#

So you tried that and it uploaded a photo without metadata

#

Where is that photo from?

#

How did you get it back on your phone?

storm lichen
final crystal
#

Ignore that

storm lichen
#

Huh

final crystal
#

Let me try to back up and re-think through what exactly I did

#

I re-uploaded via the web interface.

storm lichen
#

Fair enough, I'll also take a sec

final crystal
#

That's what I said I'd do in my steps that I said (on your mark) for

#

I know why I didn't do your added step now - I was going to ask you - once I delete it, isn't it just going to sync and disappear anyway?

#

From my phone?

#

There will be nothing to try to reupload

#

Let me check the download from the web UI, I want to see it's metadata.

#

From outside Immich

final crystal
#

Okay, I'm deleting it from the Immich web GUI

storm lichen
#

Make sure you have it saved somewhere beforehand

final crystal
#

Now it's gone from the phone

#

I did

#

But this is the next thing I was about to say - this is what downloaded from the web UI initially

modest sierra
final crystal
storm lichen
#

Who cares about file endings?

final crystal
#

Opens in MSPaint fine, though, but that happened when I went to check the metadata

#

Okay, apparently I shouldn't, lol

storm lichen
#

But yes, agreed, it's not "pretty"

final crystal
#

Yeah, it changed the timestamp and everything.

storm lichen
#

Screenshot of the exif metadata?

final crystal
#

I took the screengrab hours ago, but it's reporting the date/time of 20 min ago.

#

Filename - IMG_2113.jpg
Orientation - Top left
XResolution - 144
YResolution - 144
ResolutionUnit - Inch
Exif-IFD-Offset - 90
ColorSpace - sRGB
ExifImageWidth - 750
ExifImageHeight - 832

storm lichen
#

The exif date ๐Ÿ˜…

final crystal
#

That's specifically the EXIF button

#

More metadata to come

#

File date/time second-from-the bottom

#

Windows properties

storm lichen
#

Do you still have the original screenshot on your phone?

#

Does that even have proper metadata?

final crystal
#

No, I deleted it initially but it backed up to Immich before deleting phone side

storm lichen
#

I feel like as a screenshot it just doesn't have proper metadata and all of this doesn't matter

final crystal
#

You might be right. I can't remember if the photo the other day was one or not. Both images I'm willing to work with are screengrabs.

#

But it appeared correctly in the Immich timeline before I deleted it from the Immich server side

#

So it had a correct time on it initially

storm lichen
#

Well it'd be the time of upload

final crystal
#

Ah

storm lichen
#

Which probably is shortly after it got created in the first place

#

Given automatic backup

final crystal
#

So it showed up in order, but only because that was the order it was added to the list. Not because it necessarily had metadata telling it to be there.

#

The server download seems crisp enough to me, I'm doubtful it changed anything (compressed, etc, whatever) with respect to the photo itself.

#

Okay, I see what I made you confused about now. Deleting from Immich doesn't delete from the phone. The photo is still in my iOS photo library.

#

But it does not upload.

#

Just permanently deleted from trash on the Immich web UI - trying to see if it will upload now

#

Does not reappear in the Immich iOS app, thus cannot be reuploaded that way.

#

But can still successfully upload to the web UI. And then it syncs to my phone again.

#

But no cloud checkmark because the date/time is misaligned again.

jagged hollow
#

The app sync can be a bit dodgy, so none of this really surprises me

#

This includes the cloud icon especially

#

It sounds like web view delete, empty trash, re upload from web works, which is testing the main mechanism

final crystal
#

Well I'm just glad it's not acting up like it did the other day. I can't replicate the issue I had that made me open the ticket.

#

Maybe I just have my instance setup better now, or something along those lines. Less error prone.
