Information
In order to be able to effectively help you, we need you to provide clear information to show what the problem is. The exact details needed vary per case, but here is a list of things to consider:
- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like
fdisk -landdf -h). - The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.
- Any other information that you think might be relevant.
Please paste files and logs with proper code formatting, and especially avoid blurry screenshots.
Without the right information we can't work out what the problem is. Help us help you ;)

Hello, I just saw this support ticket and wanted to chime in. I almost gave up trying to install Immich because the written instructions are way too abstract for complete (Windows) newbies like myself, and I suspect others may have the same issue. I need to be told or shown exactly what to click and what to enter. Right before I almost gave up, I found a YT video that does exactly that, so maybe it will help here. For example, it shows how to actually populate the .env file i.e. how to enter a path with the double quotes etc., whereas the written instrctions just vaguely say to "Populate UPLOAD_LOCATION with your preferred location for storing backup assets." in the line DB_DATA_LOCATION=./postgres, which is too vague for me. I had no idea that I had to first delete the "./postgres" part and put in its palce the full path in quotes. Someone like myself with zero knowledge about this wouldn't know how it should be done. This is my one criticism of the install guide - it's not written for average users who just know how to click a button to upload their pictures to the cloud.
I wish Immich used their YT channel to show basic video tutorials like that. So here's the YT installation video that helped me

Are you new to self-hosting? Not familiar with linux? Only have a windows device? You can still self host your own google photos alternative on your pc or mac using docker desktop and docker compose. In this tutorial, I will show you how!

Thanks for sharing
Our install guide honestly isn’t designed for people with ZERO knowledge. We don’t feel it’s appropriate to recommend self hosting something so important if you have no experience
Glad the video helped
I guess that makes sense, but even that can be spelled out for people like me "hey this isn't for you" 😁. But honestly the inststructions are not that far from being good enough for complete newbies, it's just a few little things like how you fill out a path would be nice to have. Immich sounded too good to not try it.
But a video like that one is just much easier for me to follow anyway. When I read instractions, I start to glaze over at some point and think to myself "did i do this right" etc.
Hopefully you guys can do something like that in the future.
i mean officially, as part of your guide
“Non-Linux OSes tend to provide a poor Docker experience and are strongly discouraged. Our ability to assist with setup or troubleshooting on non-Linux OSes will be severely reduced. If you still want to try to use a non-Linux OS, you can set it up as follows:”
I think we thought this was clear enough?
Maybe you missed it, or does it need more info
I do remember reading this, but the way I understood it wasn't that Immich isn't for beginners, it sounded more like Windows may not support all the features or something like that. Still, Windows instructions were provided....
I guess I'm saying even that statement was a little vague for me lol
😝
anyway, that's my two cents, I don't want to belabor the point
Windows is the only option for many of us, I think...
I don't see myself ever using an OS that requires learning programming
I hope that Windows will remain an option and it will be given equal consideration by the devs because I think that most users who just want a convenenient way to backup their photos aren't familiar with Linux
My previous experience with photo backups is just clicking a button on my phone to send stuff to a cloud, so I'm guessing I'm not alone. Anyway...
Thank you for reading my rant haha
Windows can not be given equal consideration , mostly because of how docker works. It’s unlikely to ever be as good as Linux
You say the OS requires learning programming, I don’t think that’s accurate. Immich is much easier to deploy on Linux than windows. None of that editing is required
And immich won’t really ever get to the point of “just click a button”. Unless we offer a paid cloud version in the future
I hope it works well for you but your expectations may not be realistic for what the goal of this project is. Some amount of maintenance and knowledge is unavoidable
I understand, thanks for clarifying. I see now that the Linux installation is much simpler. About the required programming part, I was making a separate point about ILinux itself. I have the impression that in order to use it, one must learn a lot of command line stuff (maybe not literal programming but it might as well be for someone like me) but maybe I'm wrong about that too. Anyway, I'm glad that Windows is at least somewhat supported by Immich, even though it sounds like there are no plans to go 'mainstream' with it, and the focus is on Linux support.
