Thumbnails Missing in between working thumps

My thumbnails are missing from a collection of pictures. I tried regenerating the thumbs, but the problem persists. Please help.

When I open the pics directly they are visible

Only the history stories thumps have problem

the pics themselves are there and working but the stories show the above broken pic in between working ones
