#Initial scan/multiple libraries

Hey everyone, hope you are doing well.

Just installed immich on Unraid and wanted to ask how long the first scan takes? I did it about an hour ago and see no photos populating from the folder I pointed it to for import.

However I am thinking it might be because of the structure of the folder?
It is a folder with several other subfolders inside of it. Will that work with immich?

Also, the other question I have is I have a couple of different folders on the same server. One for personal use, one for professional use.

Would the easiest way to seperate them to have seperate accounts? If so, how would I point each account to the correct folder? Would I do it on the Unraid side in the docker configuration?

Thank you for the help!

How long the first import take is a hard question that depends on a lot of factors. But if nothing is happening then you probably didn't set it up right

I am going to stop both containers, and then go one folder level lower.

#

This is the folder paths right now, to be clear there are still more sub-folders inside of that folder as well.

If you're using the AIO image's import mechanism then this'll be a question for @chilly star :p

chilly star
#

What's the path you set in Immich ?

minor moss
chilly star
#

Oh

#

You have to use an external library

minor moss
#

Is the documentation for how to use that in FAQ or GitHub?

The description is not really true

#

It is automatically importing your assets if you have set an external library 😄

drifting granite
chilly star
#

I'll open a PR to change it

chilly star
#

The only differences are the path for the upload library (/photos), the server port and we recommend to use /import for external libraries

#

No magic here 😄

minor moss
#

Looking at the documentation it looks like I need to edit the compose file?

chilly star
#

Nope

#

Just go to administration > External libraries > Create library > add path and set it to /import

minor moss
#

Ahhhh i'm an idiot im sorry

chilly star
#

No problem

#

Actually, the description for /import is misleading

minor moss
#

Now is the pathing what my server sees? So I use what the image shows above?

chilly star
#

Yep, the folders inside /import are the folders inside /mnt/user/coldstorage2/Photos/ClarityCoat

minor moss
#

Awesome, going to try it now.

chilly star
#

So, if you have a folder called Vacation_1 inside ClarityCoat and want to import only that folder, the path you set in Immich WebUI will be /import/Vacation_1

minor moss
#

hmm it says it failed validation but I think it might be because of the space in ClarityCoat Photos

#

Isn't it supposed to have an underline when spaces are present?

chilly star
#

not a space

#

a backslash

#

/import/Vacation 2024 -> /import/Vacation\ 2024

minor moss
#

oh interesting..

chilly star
#

The same path you set when you're navigation with the cd command

minor moss
#

it's still failing, do I put /import/ before everything else?

chilly star
#

Nope

#

Just /import

chilly star
minor moss
#

Yes, for now.

chilly star
#

Then, the import path should be /import

minor moss
#

Ok added, and then set it to scan

#

Hey look at that! It's starting to do something haha.

#

Ok now if I may bother you for another question?

chilly star
#

Nice !

#

I'm listening 😄

minor moss
#

This was my 'professional' folder where it is for my company so I can share it to colleagues.

I have another 'personal' folder, same server, different folder, that I would also like to access but make sure no one else can see those photos.

Would I just create another account? Or can I use external libraries for that?

chilly star
#

You have multiple ways to share assets with Immich

#

I think the easiest solution would be to import all your assets into your account, then create an album and share the album with a link.

#

So you don't need to create an account for each one of your colleagues

minor moss
#

So using the /import feature from before, would I set a new path in the docker container pointing at the 'personal' folder, and then do the same /import as before but in the existing library? Or a new library?

chilly star
#

Are all your photos and videos stored in /mnt/user/coldstoragev2/Photos ?

minor moss
#

No

#

The personal ones are stored in /mnt/user/coldstoragev2/Personal

chilly star
#

Right

minor moss
#

Just to make sure the personal ones never showed up in the work folders

chilly star
#

I think the most elegant solution would be to play a bit with docker volumes

minor moss
#

Or maybe just have multiple instances of Immich?

#

Idc either way tbh I just want to be sure personal never shows up on work.

chilly star
minor moss
#

Lol

drifting granite
#

As long as you don't press any buttons to share stuff, separate users should be plenty separation

chilly star
#

Like, is it a problem to have all your work + personal assets on your main timeline ?

#

even if it's not shared

minor moss
#

I would have to see how Immich does the organizing. Maybe I am making it to difficult

chilly star
minor moss
#

But it's thousands and thousands of photos. And I have other dependencies that rely on the backend folder structure.

#

Like Lightroom for example. Lightroom HATES when you change folder structures outside of Lightroom and it breaks all sorts of things.

chilly star
minor moss
#

Thank you for the help so far. I am going to let it do the initial import and see how it structures everything

#

And maybe what I am wanting is a moot point.

chilly star
#

External libraries are quite new for Immich, the feature is not even a year old

#

For now, Immich focus on having the same experience as Google Photos, and external libraries obviously don't exist in Google Photos

#

But exciting features are discussed and will be implemented in the future for external libraries

#

So, my best advice would be to just play with it, and see how it fits your needs
