Make sure to keep the app open (device not asleep and app in focus) when first ingesting all your photos. Background is really only meant for a small amount of photos at a time, not the initial load of your library
I have only 12 pictures and 3 videos to upload 😂😂 not much
Should be able to do it in background because it’s no bit data to upload
Background works at the mercy of IOS. It could take a day or two before things register on there system and start uploding. Even then might only do two at a time. It's basically a black box on apples side
^ This. Even the-app-that-can-not-be-named can struggle with background tasks
Has been 4 days since I installed everything
Even if I minimize the app the backup will stop and start again when open it back
Yes, foreground will pause if you minmize the app
According to the app settings it should continue but is not for some reason ☹️☹️
https://immich.app/docs/features/automatic-backup#foreground-backup
Foreground only works if the app is opened or resumed. If it is minimized it will kill any in process uploads
Check your settings maybe to see if background refresh is allowed
For the immich app
It’s enabled 😔😔
Thanks for try helping
Bump
I think we are at the extent of what's possible. At this point it is at the mercy of iOS background actions
Bump
turn off backaground app refresh on other apps can help, also the upload speed seems slow, the background task might be killed before it finish upload your assets
if your file is 1.35GB like in the photo, I suggest use the foreground backup for those files, since no way background backup can finish before getting killed
background tasks are usually run between 10-15 seconds before getting killed by the OS
Hello … I am still on the same problem … foreground won’t upload any file if I even minimize the app …. Background is only working over WiFi 😣😣😔😔😔 thanks
what problem are you having? if you open the app and tap back up button, what happen then? Are you using local IP or DNS? can you try local IP instead?
I opened the app and it starts the back up automatically
Then I’ve switched apps just to copy and paste the picture in here and it stopped and started again
I am using a dns that I have pointed to my ip at home … all services that I have at home works flawless with 0 issues including Plex server
DNS and ip are answering with 0 problems is just when I minimize the app or switch apps it just stops backing up like if I closed the app and starts from 0
And background refresh only work over WiFi but not over data … I have the ultimate a&t phone plan no data caps
This is expected, this is foreground backup mechanism, which means it run when you open the app
I understand it but why does it stops when I switch apps
because when you switch app, the app is put into the background, so it terminates all foreground tasks
It slow I know it is but is what I have at home
Then background should start working and isn’t ☹️☹️☹️
Thank you so much for your time
correct, once you put the app into the background, it will queue a background task. Then depends on when the OS allow the task to run, then it run
the catch is, iOS will allow the background task to run around 10~15 seconds, then kill it
so with your large file, it won't finish upload before the iOS kill the background task
and this is something we don't have control over, we are at the mercy of the OS
The date was when I tried WiFi after I disable it it hasn’t ran again
Understood thanks for clarification
in your background app refresh setting, do you allow cellular?
you can try to kill the app i.e. swipe up, then open the app again. Then put it into the background, then I think it should run
Several times I even reinstalled it and still same issue 😫😫
however, the rule of thumb, if you have file larger than a few hundred MB, it is best to leave the screen on and let it upload on the foreground
I mean go to background app refresh setting itself
I’ll have to do that and then keep track of pictures then
In background app refresh settings, there are 3 options Off, WIFI, WIFI & Cellular Data
which one do you have?
Don’t see that option don’t see that option here sorry
it is in the phone settings
go to the phone settings then search for Background App Refresh, it should be the first entry
It’s on
Thanks !!
Ok, this is good
hmm I wonder why it doesn't queue when on cellular data 🤔
No idea and I have no data cap from my provider because I pay the highest plan
when you are on WIFI, it queues ok?
and the last time you are on WIFI was 2 days ago?
Y I even see the notification about the background task running on my notifications center
Yes correct
I’ve enabled just to try it
But I want it to run from cell data
now try disable/endable background refresh again
Not WiFi
Is not reading correct because in phone settings it’s enabled
Now after close the app and opening again it shows is enabled
It looks like doesn’t read Correctly from phone settings then switching apps or closing it and opening it back will recognize that is actually enabled
