Hello.
I recently managed my photo collection, and I want to try Immich in UnRaid to manage it.

I have some questions and am seeking for advice.

When you import photos to immich, does it duplicate the files to be able to manage them?
For example, if my photos are in c:\photos, and I ser /mnt/user/immich as the photos share. When I upload this photos into immich, does it copy them from c:\photos to /mnt/user/immich?

If I set the import path, are the contents of this import path also copied to /mnt/user/immich?

If you only setup immich with the default UPLOAD_LOCATION, then yes when you upload the photos, they will be duplciated into the directory you specified.

Option B) Is to use an external library which points to your exisiting photo collection

Eech has their pros and cons and you can read up on them here: https://immich.app/docs/features/libraries/

I'm currently reading it. Ty

As I'm planning to use syncthing to copy my mobile phone photos to my current windows 10 collection, I think that a good solution will be external libraries, as I dont want any software to touch that files.

#

What I wonder, is if an external library is "read only", can immich still make things as face detection?

Yes that would be the way to go. Just realize you lose some features such as editing time and location through the UI, not being able to delete or add to the library via the ui and such.

Immich will still be able to do things like face detection and when search is ready that as well. All the portions needed for that will be put into the Default Library (thumbnails, encoded videos and such).

The app will just never mess with your existing external structure.

great.
When I get used to immich, I think it will be my way to go, but for now I want to test it.

Thank you so much for your answers

I'm not able to add an external library.

I have the container configured like this

#

the external path like this

#

and my user external library as this

#

but no photo is shown

#

I tried uploading a sample foto, and it uploads properly

#

it doenst say anything in the log when I click scan library

External path and library path should be /import

granite oracle

No. Your external library is mounted in the container at /import

#

That is what you need to use in the webui

granite oracle
#

so, in the web ui, i write /import, and docker translates it to /mnt/user/Syncthing (in my case)?

#

green is what I write in the ui. red is what dockers translates for /import. is that right?

#

It is working

#

Thank you

Correct

Yeah, the path used by Immich is the container path. Paths are "converted" by docker
