The touch screen on my family's BW Caddy 2017 has failed. Apparently you can replace the touch screen yourself but we're considering buying one of those android-powered head units that just replace the whole thing. It would be nice to have android auto and maps (which the OG one does not have) but a lot of these models seem really shitty. Old hardware, sketchy looking software, overpriced. Any advice/tips/recommendations?

what did the OG one do that you want the new one to also do?
I mean
it's just the stock OS from VW
it has an apps menu but if I try to access it asks to activate it at the dealership
but otherwise you can play music from radio, cd, usb and bluetooth
so basically, a normal phone or tablet might work just as well? i'm asking if you even need a specific car thing or just a mount for a phone
Because if there's no features you truly need besides like, playing music...
Yeah aftermarket head units are all somewhat underpowered, but then again so is the one actually installed from OEM, it's only recently that they've started to get good cause they're piggybacking off of the ADAS chips. Unfortunately the market is small (I've actually been looking for myself cause there's no way my first bought car is gonna have a decent head unit). I would say sony but they're costly and I don't know if you can wire them into the default car speakers, and I have heard good things about xtrons. But talk to a mechanic aswell.
I see
I wonder if I need to get a model specific to my car or any model compattible with VW head units from this time period will work
Aftermarket units will have a compatibility list.
Manufacturers reuse parts wherever possible
I see
Also yeah if you can talk to a mechanic who knows the cars. Not a dealer though, they're just gonna sell you the OEM part, for obvious reasons.
I don't think the mechanic dad goes to is very... tech literate
