I'm the kind of person who is only sometimes in the mood to be reminded of the various political issues and current events around the world. Sometimes I'll enjoy participating in discussions, but other times even being reminded of an issue can worsen a mood and mess with my motivation and productivity (my brain works really stupidly and counterintuitively). Guiding these conversations into a channel which I can intermittently mute would improve my experience in this server

I would argue that politics discussion is already widespread enough to fill a channel with it, and if not endorsing talking about politics is a goal, you could also restrict or outlaw politics in the rules

generally Ashes idea is the correct one: if you have something to discuss, a Forum thread is the correct place. politics is such a broad subject, with so many different parts we don't want, that it's better to not have a channel for it.
on the other hand: forbidding politics gives the impression of neutrality and "both sides" which is actively harmful to the sort of discussions we want to discourage
