Use case: storing things like contracts, insurance policies & bills with my partner and being able to mark them as paid etc so we know when and where they are. With time will probably expand to store things that aren't just bills

If you don't care about ideologies/privacy then Google gives 15GB of drive space per account for free and Oracle has Free Tier VPS stuff if you want to setup DIY. I don't currently know/care what are the best VPS hosts if you have money to spend on those per month.

the idea is that you can do things like assign tags etc which can allow for more complexity than other stuff
