'lo folks, Tris particularly. Tris mentioned ADHD 360 in a recent video. thinking of pulling the trigger on this myself - I've been on NHS Scotland's waiting list for months with probably years to go. anyone got experience of the service?

scarlet trellis
#

I'll probably also try it unless there is some other recommendation for a private service

#

@lucid tulip ping! since obviously you have experience xd

lucid tulip
#

Oh! Yes do so

#

It's my provider, they're amazing

#

If you've got a grand, it's worth every penny

tidal fern
#

early in 2023 I was really struggling at work. finally got round to applying for an assessment. pre-screening NHS appointment with community mental health nurse was "yeah this is pretty dire". I've now got a new job and much nicer bosses, but still not getting work done, and I'd gladly pay £1000 out of pocket if it means getting the "today was a good day" medication

#

ha, snap

#

well I don't have a grand but I have a credit card and I'd like to keep my job

lucid tulip
#

Almost as good 😂

tidal fern
#

perfect 🙂

lucid tulip
#

Really nice folks over there

#

Private medicine eh? 😅

#

They SHIP you a blood pressure monitor, I couldnt even

tidal fern
#

haha wow

lucid tulip
#

It's a different world

#

But yes, no regrets

tidal fern
#

cheers 🙂

Meds are about 100 / month, but they try to get you back onto the NHS system as soon as possible, but budget for a year I'd say, worse case. They'll answer all questions in the assessment, and there's not like a contract or anything. Don't pay, don't get meds. You can have as much time off as you want

#

I took 2 weeks off a month ago, all cool

tidal fern
#

also I found the "it is likely this will lead to an ADHD diagnosis" letter from the local clinic in just five minutes search

lucid tulip
#

Excited for you dude, good luck! Ping me in this thread if you need adhd360 advice later on 😁

tidal fern
#

will do 🙂

#

I'm meant to be moving house on Saturday, my monthly 1:1 with the COO is tomorrow or Thursday, this is me procrastinating. anyway I've booked the assessment

#

thanks for the tip!

tidal fern
#

gosh the red/blue square/circle test was boring

lucid tulip
#

IT'S SO DUMB I HATE IT

#

But apparently it has some science behind it 🙄

#

It's used, I think, because the NHS uses it, and they must align to the standard there to be able to hand us back to our gp

#

I think it's the same reason the questions focus so much on childhood - because that's what most of the legacy criteria are.

tidal fern
#

Science!

I went down the ADHD360 route at your recommendation too Tris, just completed all the assessments and booked the appointment.

I'll be pleased if this eventually means I can focus for more than 5-10 minutes at a time before getting distracted by something new 😆

# tidal fern gosh the red/blue square/circle test was boring

I got curious what this is. I got diagnosed myself but the Netherlands does not use this test.

They make claims about objectivity with this test that are spurious at best, I'm assuming it's a 1 time test as well meaning results are heavily impacted by how you're doing that day. If not, it could at least approximate something objective.

lucid tulip
#

I hated that test so much I begged my provider to let me not do it.

HOWEVER, my wife did it and they said it showed clear adhd traits, which I guess is "can't focus on a boring task for 20 minutes"?
I'm suspicious of this kind of thing, but maybe it helps!

scarlet trellis
#

unknowing to them, I have conditioned myself to liking the tests!

#

i used to do similar things with my friends out of curiosities sake

covert raft
#

Thank you Tris for your recent video about adhd. It was long overdue for me to get tested, and because of it I finally got the motivation to try. I got my assessment today and soon I'll start the treatment plan. I'm also on the ASD spectrum - diagnosed a couple of years ago. For me the big issue is due to the lost of motivation or interest in the work. Usually it happens after about one year into the contract. Most of the time I find myself quitting and finding something else that excited me to work on. And I keep repeating this cycle.

Finally had my assessment and they confirmed ADHD 😬

the meds aren't magic, there's work for us to do with them

#

the biggest thing I've noticed is that the meds help me concentrate, but it's up to me what I use those precious few hours FOR

#

it is entirely possible, picking a random example, to use it all arguing with strangers on the internet, but I wouldn't recommend it 😅

tidal fern
#

I got so much happier when I stopped using Twitter on bloody-minded principle when Musk took over

#

(I'm still 75% through the pre-assessment questionaire)

tall kraken
# lucid tulip the biggest thing I've noticed is that the meds help me concentrate, but it's up...

Ha that's weird I've just been contemplating the exact same thing this morning... having a clear purpose for the day is so important to put the renewed focus to good use. It's been a strange few weeks getting used to the meds - they are fantastic, but made me feel really weird for the first couple of weeks. Now I've got a 'stable' level of focus, but given the nature of my work it's hard because I've got to spin 100s of plates every day rather than hone in on a single task. Coding of a weekend though is a revelation 😆

lucid tulip
#

it takes some time getting used too, right! We'll figure it out 😄

twin stone
# lucid tulip the meds aren't magic, there's work for us to do with them

I have just started with methylphenidate XR and I still need to figure out the dosage and I had my first CBT session...
But I'm in uni and failing exams bc previously I couldn't concentrate (and tbh I still need to figure out the dosage as 40mg seems still not enough, idk) and I couldn't be consistent in studying. As a result, I panicked and tried to do everything last "minute" but it's simply too little time.

I know I'm gonna do better, I know it wasn't exactly "my fault", but I still feel like it. I know finishing uni later is pretty common and I cannot compare myself to others... But I just feel... Lost...

incredible to get the help juuuuuuuuuust before the last minute, well done!
The meds don't fix everything, or even most things, they're not magic, but they are important. They give you just a touch of space to focus, but it is up to you to build the right habits to decide WHAT to focus on. You can do it!

Re-doing a year, if you can afford to, is not failure, it's only a year. I know that feels big now, but I can't even remember which of my friends re-took a year, it matters so little in the long run. What matters is that you can do the things you want, and improve. 🙂

twin stone
# lucid tulip incredible to get the help juuuuuuuuuust before the last minute, well done! The ...

Idk how incredible it is getting help "last minute" as it wasn't really last minute. This is my 3rd medications and been diagnosed 7 and a half months ago.
And the situation is not going to change for the better in enough time but I'm confident it's going to be way better.
I'm trying to accept the "losing a year" and not "meeting expectations".
Probably this was also a consequence of me being gifted and never had a study method + overachieving in the field I was interested in.

#

Can I ask u something?
I don't think I "don't have time" to do things, but more about remaining consistent and filling my "ram".

My idea was to start a 16h part-time and in the meantime prepare for the exams in smaller batches.
Work doesn't require me to "remember" things as much as uni does and it's consistent unlike lessons, and probably because I have a routine for work, I can better create a routine for coping with ADHD??
Idk this was my "hypothesis" and I was planning to do so.
Any personal comments? (Everything is accepted, don't worry)

lucid tulip
twin stone
# lucid tulip You not only can create a routine for adhd, you MUST! 😁 Did you see my coping m...

yeah i know I must, and i'm slowly trying to figure out what works and what not and mold it into my own routine. Tho it takes time.
one big thing is indecisiveness to do or not to do a task based on conditions, (also bc as u know already... time perception is 🫠 ) , so I was like i either just ignore conditions and do it on a schedule, or if i have multiple choice , just randomize it so u don't have to "decide" and loose a lot of time bc of that
btw can i ask u if u can share me the other ones? it would be a great inspo, thx in advance

lucid tulip
#

I'd love to help, but it's tricky, as I'd have to conceptualise what are now unconscious habits!
Ask specific questions about pain points, and I'll think about what I do, and perhaps others will suggest tips too!

#

I'm producing a video this weekend, so I will check back in periodically 😊

lucid tulip
#

So I'm a huge proponant of doing a little each day, making it a habit. The first big writing habit for me was Lost Terminal, I released the pilot episode on a Monday, and in the credits (voiced by my wife) promised that "Lost Terminal will return next week" - THERE WAS NO GOING BACK!

In order to meet this horrific weekly deadline I had given myself, I fell back on a habit I built while writing https://nanowrimo.org one year - daily wordcount minimums. For Lost Terminal, it's quite modest: 400.
The FIRST thing I do every morning, before opening my browser, is write those 400 words. They don't even have to be GOOD 400 words. After getting the stone into the workshop, I can then edit those words over the course of 2 weeks before recording and publishing (I write 1 episode in lieu).

This pattern has worked for No Boilerplate, almost unedited, and I do my word count after I have finished with Lost Terminal in the morning. This takes me to lunchtime, and my afternoons are less structured. Sometimes I'll be writing the music for Lost Terminal, more video writing, or just admin for my projects (there's a lot!).

I'd say if you've not read/listened to Ultralearning, do it asap, I wish I'd read it while I was still in education!

didn't even knew about the book, thxx

Huh, it was published 2019, no WONDER I didn't read it when I was at university 2004-2009 😆

one thing is don't know how to structure it tbh. idk if to have a note for every small subtopic and a topic note linking to them and exercise notes with links or tags to those subtopic??

notes are single subject

once they get bigger, start [[breaking out]] more notes

there's a plugin called Note Refactor that is great for that - highlight a section and break it out into a new note with ctrl+p "note refactor"

there's a lot to learn, balance yourself by not fussing with your setup too much, maybe schedule that for low-energy times (for me, those are the evenings)

ok, gotta get back to writing, will check back tomorrow!

#

cya, really thx for everything
one of my biggest problem is also managing meals:

- i like to cook and enjoy good meals, especially baking. As you said, food is one thing, meals are something else.
AND PLS NOT SOMETHING LIKE RICE AND BBQ SAUCE
- i don't know what i have and have not in the house.
- minuscule space in the fridge as we divide it in 3 this causes:
  - food is hidden behind other and so I forget about it and gets rotten
  - cannot store a lot of food, so i need to do shopping frequently, this causes:
    - limits quantity, or size of food that I can buy or prepare
    - i don't really know what to eat, choice paralysis. this makes me lose a TON of time.
I'm starting to try this method: (plan meals for 2 weeks, stick to them and repeat). Let's see how it goes
twin stone
lucid tulip
#

it's not for everyone but sidesteps all those problems

twin stone
lucid tulip
#

totally fair, it's not for everyone (it's not even for me every single meal!)

I can highly recommend the rule

Never cook just one portion, always have leftovers

If you can freeze stuff!

twin stone
lucid tulip
#

Perhaps find compact food that can be stored in your room? meal replacements are perf here, but ramen's a classic for this reason too!

twin stone
#

I really like ramen (I also add a boiled egg), tho I need to find it at a place where they sell it at a good price bc it isn't usually the cheapest in the stores nearby

#

I usually always keep one or 2 portions at any time for quick food, also frozen pizzas

jagged flume
#

I've also figured out something that helped me a lot with food. Pickling. Allows me to use onions without having to slice it again and in smaller proportions. And also adds a nice flavour.

tidal fern
#

whenever anyone posts in this thread I get a notification and a twinge of guilt that I've paid for an assessment and not completed the pre-assessment questionnaire yet

jagged flume
#

that's a great indication you might have adhd

twin stone
#

Yeah that's an indicator ahah
Btw @tidal fern i suggest you to put a timer and try to speedrun it or something like that
Instead of a task is a challenge/game which helps you with dealing with it

jagged flume
#

body double if you want

#

body doubling is a life hack that works amazing for me

twin stone
#

In my case doesn't work that much bc my closest friend probably has ADHD too and u can understand how things can go wrong real quick 💀

#

Lmao

jagged flume
#

for me that mostly meant that when we did pomodoro, the breaks didn't stick to 5 minutes lol

twin stone
#

Yeah exactly and the break from 5 minutes went to 3 hours

jagged flume
#

for me they went to 15

twin stone
#

Yeah we stopped counting at some point lmao

winged oak
#

@twin stone if you haven’t tried it before, services like Gusto and Hello Fresh have been a life saver for me when it comes to cooking

#

Also if you do still need to shop, the extra £2-£5 for delivery takes a lot of stress out of going to the store

twin stone
#

I have literally the store behind home lmao

winged oak
#

I love cooking so much I now cook every meal for me and my wife, I couldn’t hope to even make a single meal if I didn’t have all the ingredients sent to me, each recipe’s ingredients are in their own paper bag, and the recipe is also printed out for me

twin stone
#

It's mostly about choice and the paralysis that comes from that

winged oak
#

I would thoroughly recommend a meal service like either of those I mentioned then

twin stone
winged oak
#

You only have a set amount of meals to pick from each week, they rotate so you have variety

#

if you don’t pick, they pick for you and send something that fits the package you subscribed to (vegetarian or non vegetarian)

#

so as long as you don’t have any allergies or intolerances you could subscribe and never make a decision again they’ll just send you all the ingredients you need and the associated recipes

#

it’s a bit more expensive than shopping, it gets cheaper the more meals you order, but when it comes to neurodivergent folks it’s worth it to be kind to yourself and make things easier, and also sometimes if you have the luxury, pay a little extra and see if the value provided in return is worth it for you

#

if eating the same meal every single day doesn’t bother you, and that makes shopping easier because you only have to plan one dinner a week, do what makes you happy and at peace

#

if you want the variety, maybe paying a little more than usual is worth it if someone else manages the stress of meal planning and shopping, and they just send you the meals, it’s definitely been worth it for me

tidal fern
#

probably works out equivalent or cheaper than buying what you think you're gonna cook sometime later in the week, then chucking it out covered in mould two weeks later

winged oak
#

absolutely, that’s another benefit, you only ever have exactly what you need sent to you, sauces and spices included
