On Linux, the officially supported way to use Codex is indeed to use the Codex CLI (and/or IDE extensions) instead of a desktop app.

From the docs:

  • The Codex CLI is fully supported on Linux and gives you a full-screen TUI that can read, edit, and run code in your project.[Codex CLI features]
  • You can install it on Linux with the standalone installer or via npm/Homebrew, then run codex in your terminal and sign in with ChatGPT or an API key.[CLI setup; Quickstart CLI]

So yes: for Linux, “use CLI instead” is exactly what the official docs describe as the supported path.
