"This is a legacy version of memory, which may become outdated over time. ChatGPT's improved memory automatically stays up to date, leading to more relevant and useful replies."

This sucks. Legacy is INFINITELY better for those like myself working on stories with LOTS of Lore!
Have an option to KEEP using it, and do not make it a force opt-in!

I had 39 memories stored in the old system, and the new "summary" remembered jack crap. 😒

If you ask me, the latest updates they've brought have started to move away from the core user focus and become more geared towards the Codex and API. Who came up with the idea of renaming the "thinking mode" today, which distorts and simplifies the user experience?

Note: I'm also interested in things like stories. The new update should be offered as an option.

The new memory system is not working for me either, but I found this helps. It is not perfect.

One workaround that may help is using Projects as a dedicated container for each story or world. Put detailed project instructions in there, including character notes, lore rules, formatting preferences, tone, boundaries, and anything the model needs to preserve consistently.

You can also copy your full legacy memory into a document and add it to the Project as a source file. That way, the Project has your lore, continuity, and preferences available as a dedicated reference instead of relying only on general memory summaries.

Then, if the option is available, turn off outside memory for that Project so it only relies on the Project’s own instructions and files.

It is not the same as having full legacy memory control, but it can give you a more stable workspace and reduce random outside context from bleeding into the story.

I agree, Lore from one story started to mix into another since the feature to turn off other chat history references disappeared.

I don’t use legacy because it will disappear one day when we least expect it.

How do you use the legacy?

I hate the new memory system as well. As someone who only uses ChatGPT for worldbuilding, stories/roleplay and lore.... The summary summarises NOTHING. I add one thing, it deletes a different thing or adds it extremely compromised. Coolio, it's utterly completely useless. The legacy system was by far superior for worldbuilding (yes, I'm using legacy because I refuse to that new system after finding out how useless that is)

I heard the old memory model is set to be removed on September 1st. I’m hoping a lot of people will drop GPT then—not only did they remove the chat history reference, but now they’re getting rid of the old memory system too. I’ll definitely leave at that point unless they bring those two things back.

"ChatGPT's improved memory automatically stays up to date, making replies more relevant and useful" - that's a load of nonsense, except that the replies are more relevant and useful XD
