Dear OpenAI Team,
I am writing to urgently request a reconsideration of the ban on Venezuelan access to OpenAI services. There is a clear overcompliance issue with regards to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) restrictions. It seems that the current ban on Venezuela is an unintended mistake.
OFAC sanctions primarily target individuals, entities, and sectors associated with the Venezuelan government, as well as those engaged in activities detrimental to U.S. national security, foreign policy, or human rights concerns. The sanctions **don't apply to Venezuelan citizens **who are not directly linked to the government or engaged in prohibited activities.
Major companies like Meta, Google, Adobe, and Apple continue to operate in Venezuela without restrictions, providing their products and services to regular Venezuelan citizens and companies. This demonstrates that there is no explicit prohibition on engaging with non-sanctioned individuals or entities.
By maintaining the ban, OpenAI is unnecessarily excluding talented individuals from Venezuela who rely on this service for their work, inadvertently perpetuating inequalities and hindering the growth and development of the Venezuelan tech ecosystem.
Failing to address this overcompliance issue not only restricts opportunities for Venezuelan citizens but also contradicts OpenAI's mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. By lifting the ban, OpenAI can lead the way in promoting responsible AI development and empower Venezuelan citizens with access to cutting-edge resources.
I urgently request OpenAI to rectify this situation, lift the ban on Venezuelan access to OpenAI services and engage in meaningful dialogue to explore solutions that align with regulatory requirements.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I believe that OpenAI has the opportunity to correct a mistake and make a positive impact on the Venezuelan tech community.
